In a world where corporations have dwarfed major governments and cities have become jungles of neon spattered concrete, everything is a business. A world where city police forces pale in comparison to the private security firms and criminal underworld. A city where human augmentation is everywhere... if you've got the cash. In a city like this, everyone's got a problem they need solved. Everyone's got a few dirty deeds they need done.

That's where we come in. Runners are the real movers and shakers in Midnight City. Freelancers in every trade from mercenaries to hackers. Runners take on the jobs too dangerous or too difficult for anyone else. Some run alone, while others run in teams. Every Runner is different, and every team has its own ideals and moral code... if it has any at all.

Not everyone likes Runners. Everyone needs them. Hits, break-ins, package delivery, cyber-warfare, even gang clean-up; Runners do it all. Running might be illegal, but even the police realize they're too much a part of this city... and even they need to call on their help now and again.

That's where we come in. In a world lost underneath its own vices, your team's all you've got. And it's all you need.

Midnight City hugs one of the great American lakes and after running out of space, the city has been building upwards ever since, leaving its street level in almost perpetual midnight as its skyscrapers rise higher and higher. With the constant increase in population and the continuous decrease in living space, this sprawling city has grown to become one of the biggest in the world both in size and population.

A city where megastructures, skyscrapers as wide as a small neighborhood and rising hundreds of floors into the sky, have sprung up. Built by corporations to try and house the ever increasing number of low class citizens. A city where the richest and wealthiest (often called High Risers) live in the ever-rising penthouses at the top of the city structures; the only places that seem to get sunlight Meanwhile the rest of the city squanders underneath their galas and dinner parties.

Runners are freelance agents who make things happen. That's us. People need things done. They have problems. We solve problems. It's a cruel world out there. You have your team's backs, they'll have yours.

"I am Sergeant Ramirez and if you're in my unit, it means the suits think you're good enough to be part of our little Freelance Control Task Force. These freelancers, or Runners, or whatever name they go by... are a problem. Unfortunately, there isn't much the MCPD can do. Like it or not; and I know I sure as hell don't; they're part of the city. The Corps use 'em, the Families use 'em, some civvies use 'em too. Some of you might be aware that even the MCPD uses them now and again; and if you weren't you are now. This means we can't do much about them, but we can keep track of them. The sheets in front of you are examples of the case files we keep on any Runners we're aware of. A real case file on a real Runner will, obviously, look nothing like this. Real Runners are messy. Some of those files get fat with reports. Some of the Runners are smart, their files will be thin. That doesn't mean they're friendly, it just means they're good at covering their tracks. Age: "Just like name, self explanatory. Just don't let it fool you. If a guy's old, it means he's a veteran. That's a bad thing for us."
Physical Description: "Sometimes a picture ain't good enough. Physical description of the subject. Basic stuff. If we know their height, their build, eye color, hair color, anything that shows up on an ID database, we keep it here. And you'd be surprised how often this section is sparse. These Runners, they like their costumes."

Known History: "Any info we got on their background. This is easier than it sounds because a lot of these guys leave a messy trail of paperwork. Runners are a unique facet in that they don't come from any single lifestyle. You'll see Runners who grew up dirt poor in a megastruct', you'll see Runners who grew up as rich High Risers, you might even see a Runner who used to be a cop."

Psych Profile: "Psych profile is a- Hey! Hey, Waterson. You wanna have your little whispered conversation, do it on your own time. Shut the fuck up when I'm talking and pay attention. Anyway, psych profile. How do they act? What drives them? Why do they get up every morning, pick up a gun, and start shooting at shit? Some of these guys are pretty straight forward. Some of these guys are some pretty sick puppies."

Mode of Operation: "Modus Operandi. What do they do? Why are they dangerous? Some of these guys are hackers, some of them are expert infiltrators, some of 'em are just good with a gun. This is where we put that down. Questions to ask: What kind of equipment do they use? What are they good at? If they are augmented, what augs do they have? I swear to god, about 90% of these guys have something modded. Artificial arm, or an implant, or something. It gives them that edge in a fight, so whatever they have, write it down."

Edit it and add to it as time goes on, and trust me, you will have to add to it. But keep it short because almost every Runner has a laundry list of crimes and I don't have time to read each one. Stick all the crime reports in the back of the file and keep this part short."

Status: "There five options here. Active, meaning they're still runnin' around. Inactive, meaning they've quit, are unable to continue running, or we haven't heard from them in a two year period. Deceased, obviously, means they're fuckin' dead. Incarcerated, means we managed to build a case file that actually put them in prison, which is rare. Lastly, you'll sometimes see Active in Employ. This means they do work for the MCPD. It does not mean they are friendly, however. Only that they're willing to take our money."

Full Name: Angel Angelov
Aliases: A.A., Teeth
Age: 32
Physical Description: Angel is a girl of average height, standing at about 5'7", with a somewhat burly build. She's got a face that's seen some harsh times, with several burns and scars that she covers with a bandanna while in combat. The right side of her head is buzzed short, and the rest of her hair has been dyed blue and let grown long. Her metal arms are black and slim, and while in-combat she wears mostly tactical gear to hold all of her ordinance, her everyday wear is a bit more standard to someone of her upbringing - leather jacket, black undershirt, jeans, and so on.

Known History:
→ Born in the slums to junkie parents.
→ Joined a gang of delinquents and never went back home at the age of 15.
→ Gang called themselves the "Bitch Lords", lead by a woman named "Edges".
→ The gang started performing larger crimes in order to buy motorbikes, in order to pull off bigger crimes.
→ First kill at the age of 17 during a turf war with the "99 Bullets" Gang
→ Became the primary enforcer for the Bitch Lords, and started working with them on other criminal activities - assassinations, drug deals, etc.
→ Tried to leave the gang when it started to get too big for its own good - the Bitch Lords got into a gang war with the "Onyx Angels", a much larger gang than the Bitch Lords
→ Was granted permission to leave if she took on all the dangerous work during the war and survived.
→ Heavily augmented herself, and gained her nickname of "Teeth" for unknown reasons during the war. Known for leaving the scenes of battles in complete carnage.
→ After a lengthy period, Edges was assassinated and replaced by her lieutenant, Morgan. The war was over, and they released Angelov from the gang as long as she paid a monthly tribute to them.
→ Angelov had few marketable skills, which, alongside her past, made her unemployable by most. So she became a runner.

Psych Profile: Angel is a rough, but playful woman. She takes herself a bit more seriously now that she's a part of a slightly more legitimate organization, but still is a morbid joker when she's not in a fight. Most may call her a bit of a bitch, but some recognize her brashness as the sign of a woman without a filter. In battle, however, she changes significantly. Gone are her toothy grins and awful jokes, replaced with a level of incredible dissociation and professionalism - she speaks very bluntly and plainly, and seems to show little to no emotion in her interactions with others.

Mode of Operation: Heavily augmented nerve system, cyberarms, cybereyes, and a brain chip make her a capable combatant in the world of guns. She has an incredibly improved set of reflexes, can see the heat of enemy combatants, and her cyberarms help with protection, lifting oversized guns, and even has a secret compartment for a holdout pistol. She also has a signature, souped up bike from her old gang days that she knows how to pilot like a pro.

As for guns, Angel has more than really seems possible. She's been reported using tons of different weapons, from rocket launchers to miniguns, to her ancient AK, she always seems to be able to bring out whatever gun a situation requires.

Physical Description: In person, Itagaki is described as a 'lanky' Asian male. Stands at around 5'10" with a thin build. Has short, black hair and wears glasses. Is not augmented or modified in any way.
'Investigator's Note: The fact that the perp is unassuming in physical appearance should be noted. Information gathering while disguised as a civilian could certainly be a tactic and it wouldn't be the first time a Runner's used it. Officers have reported that a civilian matching this description has been noticed hanging around near the station from time to time, but we can't go around arresting every skinny Asian kid that hangs around downtown.'

Known History:
- Born in Midnight City. Father (Hiroshi Itakagaki) was a computer engineer who'd recently immigrated from Japan with his wife (Saya Itagaki). Grew up with two brothers (Taru and Kenji). Background checks on the family are clean.
- Grew up in stable, middle-class environment.
- Diagnosed with Gerhart's Disorder at age of 14. 'Investigator's Note: Had to research what this even is. Apparently it's a rare genetic disorder of some kind. Makes him have allergic reactions to the main agent in that medicine they give people who get modded. The one that keeps their bodies from rejecting the new implant or limb those first few months. Means he can't get augmented in any way. Probably a good thing for us.'
- Was considered a child prodigy in mathematics and later in engineering and computer science.
- Began attending Stantson University at age of 16 on a scholarship.
- During sophomore year, began to take work performing under-the-table repairs on cybernetics.
- At some point, gang members and other criminal organizations began to use his services. Moved up from repairs to modifications and even some full installs. 'Investigator's Note: Probably figured he was too good to get caught or ratted out. Money probably didn't hurt either.'
- Began development of the 'Backbone'. The project was a simple exo-skeleton that aided movement for those who were impaired in some way. Intended as a simpler and cheaper alternative to augments.
- Warrant for his arrest was issued after arrested gang members gave up his information. Itagaki fled his apartment and took some of his belongings, including the Backbone prototype.
- Itagaki remained off the grid for a few months.
- At some point, began running. Reason unknown. Backbone was developed into an armored, full body exo-suit. Suit proved to be incredibly effective as armor.

Psych Profile: 'Itagaki is a weird one in the way that he's one of those Runners who seems to have started running for no reason; or at least, we haven't found one yet. Going off the grid was most definitely a factor, but he could've just fled the country. Instead, he stayed and took up running. It's definitely not because of some mental issue; background and history show no signs of sociopathic or psychopathic behavior. What we do know is that Itagaki's a wiz kid when it comes to mechanics and computers. He's also a lot braver than you'd expect some skinny, middle-class kid to be; but then again anyone wearing an armored suit would probably feel invincible too. It's been noted that he's the 'bring your humor to work' type, something that probably gets on his team member's nerves here and there. He's also a bit of a 'hobbyist'. Those Japanese cartoons and the toys and stuff around them. From what we can gather, he's a big fan of it.'

Mode of Operation: In a fight, Itagaki wears a layered suit of armor (pictured below).

From what we've gathered, the suit is made up from an exo-skeleton underneath a nanomesh weave with armor plates fastened around it. The suit is pretty heavy, but the exo-skeleton underneath all that does most of the heavy lifting. This hybrid between exo-suit and power armor isn't unique, it's been done before. However, compared to other, larger suits, the Backbone is a bit on the lighter side. Compared to an unarmored combatant, this thing is tank; but it's not as big as some of the other, military grade power armor. We suspect that this done in order to balance out armor with mobility. While not agile, the suit can still run and crouch; something that most power armor can't do. It also stands at around 6 feet tall while most military grade heavy power armor stands at almost 7 feet tall. Because the suit aids in movement, the use of heavier weapons becomes an easier task as well and Itagaki tends to use bigger guns. The suit is battery powered, and the energy use has been measured at around 4 hours per energy cell. The downside is that this thing needs to be powered. And Itagaki's got almost zero combat capability outside the suit.

Out of the field, however, the perp is still a problem. Itagaki's supposed to be quite handy with mechanics; including (but obviously not limited to) cybernetics. Many of the modifications on allied Runners appear to be his handywork and the amount of gadgetry he and his allies employ comes from him. The suit also tends to get modified and refitted often. He's also an accomplished hacker, especially considering the precinct always has enough evidence to know he's been doing it, but nothing substantial enough to find out who exactly he is online or where he's doing it from. He's got along track record of cybercrime. He's good at it, and rubbing it in your face seems to be part of his hacking MO.

Physical Description: Estimated between 5'11" and 6'2" in height, subject always seen in heels so measurements change sighting to sighting. Slim bodied, with artificial flowers that have been implanted into her scalp. Eye color seem to change often as well, though most common colors are blue or gold. Subject seems heavily modified by reconstructive surgery.

Known History: (Note - Information on subject only begins around age 19)
-Came onto the scene working in a brothel run by the gang, The Empty Eyes.
-Works at a themed brothel with three other women, each one of them personifying a season (See Empty Eyes, Themed Brothels for a complete list). Subject most likely underwent reconstructive surgery particularly for this job, as most in the field do.
-Spent several years under the direction of known pimp and Empty Eyes member Humphrey "Razor" Atkins. Despite quick turnover at the House of Seasons subjects has remained employed and alive.
-Age 21, Subject is arrested for transporting drugs with her fellow prostitutes and Razor Atkins. Was released after a day, clerical error deleted video proof of crime. (Investigator's note - Spring appeared interested in speaking with officers, requesting a private audience. However subject rescinded offer after lawyer arrived. Investigator suspects subject was intimidated by Empty Eyes into silence.)
-Subjects appears to have worked as a prostitute for several years before becoming a runner, using contacts she'd "met" on the job.

Psych Profile: Subject presents herself as different people when encountered, but there are some common traits. Spring is flexible, adaptable, and quick to change tactics. Subject is known to charm her adversaries and make them think she is not a threat. Subjects primary motivator appears to be money, selecting high paying jobs despite danger or personal parel.

Mode of Operation: Though making a fair trade in the brothel, subject seems to avoid sexual requests that can be found on certain channels. Instead she specializes in infiltration, information gathering and subterfuge. She uses disguises and/or potentially enhanced alterations to change her appearance in a handful of ways (see physical description - eye color, hair, etc). Subject also appears to move through pitch black areas with ease, suggesting retinal enhancements of some kind.

Subject stands at a diminutive 5'5". Her weight is not really known, and her build is hard to suss out given that she has so many body modifications. It's not like anyone reads these, anyways, and so I could probably bullshit some things. Anyway, she has a dark pallor, dark brown hair that is kept straight and goes mid-back, brown eyes, and is attractive--but like watch model attractive. She's definitely a 4-6 on a 1 to 10 fap list. The most notable aspect of the subject is her four extra limbs. They have two modes: heavy armor combat arms that look like crazy anime robot limbs, and leisure arms that look like a plastic-y (I know it isn't a word, Stan) versions of her own arms. It is assumed she has neural implants to work these arms, but we honestly don't know what else she has modified on herself. It is believed she may have gone to a Black Market modder. Beyond that, she either wears business suits that practically scream "so starched it is hard to move" or combat gear that you can practically hear the "k" bounce off of.

PSYCH PROFILE
Charlie is pretty damn smart. She's also quite serious and has a stick so far up her ass that you can see it when she opens her mouth enough. She came from money, privilege, and intelligence. She lets that ooze with everything she does. She's a super bitch. That being said, her intelligence is both helpful and crippling. She can figure a problem out in a record time, but at the same time she can be confounded by pop trends or weird turns-of-phrase. Honestly, the subject is one of the few business oriented Runners that we've ever had the honor of writing a profile up for.

MODE OF OPERATION
SHE HAS SIX ARMS. I honestly don't know how to add anymore about her. She has six arms, and on the battlefield she has a pistol in each of them. They're semi-automatic. Given her background she's usually quite on point using them. Her armor can soak up a lot of bullets, that being said it isn't heavy enough for anything beyond gunfire. Her head, while open, is covered by a light shield as powerful as her armor. Her entire motif is apparently to spray and pray, but with a lot less praying. This doesn't discount her ability to change robots to join her force. She can also reverse-engineer a lot of equipment no matter how complex or simple.
