  1. So today I came across a gem of the internet that randomly throws you in a random country on the planet using google maps. If you haven't checked out the game it quickly got turned into, check it out here: http://www.iwakuroleplay.com/showthread.php?t=16680

This got me thinking however. It's be stupid easy to turn this into a writing challenge.

    So here's the premise:

Time and space has been torn open and you have been flung into a section of the world you've never seen before. Using MapCrunch as Inspiration, write up a short story of a character that gets flung into their randomized setting. From there, continue it into how your character carries out trying to find their way home.

    Do they get lost?

Do they come across a store and ask for help? Or to use a phone?

    Is there a language Gap?

If they're in the middle of the boondocks and they come across a car would they hijack it?

There's no rules here, just use mapcrunch as inspiration and weave a story of your struggle back home.

Added bonus: Feel free to use cropped screen shots of your journey to point out stops along the way to set the mood of the piece.

  2. She was just waking up, sit fuzzy, head pounding. The sun was covered by clouds, making her surroundings rather bleak. Every so often a bird would flitter and chirp in the trees above her head. The girl didn’t notice the chill in the air until her nose began to run, causing her to sniff. Where was she? How did she get here? Pushing herself up off the ground and brushing off leaf litter, she stumbled from the forest on a road. It was empty and unwelcoming. Looking to her left, there was nothing but road; to the right was a blue sign.

What?! Tears stung her eyes once she realized the sign was unreadable. Words like Soini and Ahtari peered at her, almost taunting her, reveling in her pain. Deciding that maybe she shouldn’t just stand in the middle of the road, she began to follow the straight arrow to Soini that would take her by a barn, maybe she could get help from these people.

Finally, she came to the only house she could see. To her back was fields of crops, in front of her were piles of sticks and a tarp. The house didn’t seem too scary, but even so, she slowly walked up the driveway to the door. Lightly, she tapped at the door. A big man swung the door open, startling her.

He stood at least a good foot over her, eyes dark, hair greasy. His lips were pursed into firm line. That’s when she noticed blood staining his fingers and a soft whimper in the house behind him, but that was also the moment he became aware of his situation, what she was seeing and hearing; that was the moment he determined she couldn’t leave.

A firm grip bruised her arms as she was jerked into the dark house. It was worse than she thought! Another girl, about her age, was lying on the ground, scratch marks covering her frail frame, a rag covered in gas shoved in her mouth.

“Please, no,” she begged softly and looked up at the man who now had a sinister smirk playing at the edge of his lips. Grabbing the back of her head with one of his meaty hands, he shoved a rag soaked with gas over her face.

    Everything went black….
She didn’t know how long she had been passed out but now she wasn’t in the house, the man wasn’t around her. Squirming a bit, she found that she had been bound at the wrist and ankles. Panic set in as she frantically began to look around, only to find that she was under a mass of stick with the tarp she had seen early placed over top.

“Let me go! Please!” Her screams began to mix with sobs, but she was only answered with the splatter of liquid on the tarp. Kerosene filled her nostrils before there was a big WHOOSH when her pile was set ablaze.

Her whole body burned, skin boiled, hair smoking… how much longer of this could she endure… all of a sudden there was a peace inside her, the noise of the fire faded, the flames in front of her eyes turned into a face then there was a deep voice that said….
“Well done my child, enter in and rest.”

And that was the moment her soul was free.
