What do you feel is the single best line in a song?
Is it because it evokes a certain emotion in you, is a phenomenal pun, or is just beautiful? Some other reason?

Cause I know I don't wanna stay here forever it's time to be moving on
Oh, I don't wanna be the only one living when all of my friends are gone

~Frozen Pines, Lord Huron

Warning, I get a little depressing. :"D[spoili]
This spoke to me from the first time I heard this song. I don't know why, it just invokes a certain sadness and yearning in me. And in general, that's kinda my stance on growing old/immortality, etc. I suppose as an introvert I already have very, very few people I'm close to, so the thought of them having passed on and being alone can be kinda lonesome even before it happens. ^_^'[/spoili]

If I had to pick one of the top of my head - which is difficult, because so many genres have so many different lyrical conventions and tropes, and also so many genius lyricists - I'd probably go with.

'I never sleep, because sleep is the cousin of death.'
- Nas - N.Y. State of Mind.

Song's from Illmatic, almost certainly one of the four or five most iconic hip-hop/rap albums twenty-three years after its release. Firstly, it sounds cool as shit - although the concept's not original to him. But, in the context of the song, it's evocative of an image, an experience that I'm wholly unfamiliar with; the sort of sleepless paranoia of a gangster in... well, New York, the city that never sleeps. It's very representative of the story the song as a whole tries to tell.

But, yes, the quote has its roots elsewhere, and far, far back. It's the context of the song which elevates it.

I think punchline/wordplay rap is highly overrated but:

"I father, I Brooklyn Dodger them. I jack, I rob, I sin. Aww man, I'm Jackie Robinson, 'cept when I run base, I dodge the pen." -- Jay-Z

Needs a bit of parsing through rap-slang, but the line is literally a quadruple entendre. Running base is selling 'coke', but he also plays on the (admittedly over-used) rap pun of 'running bass' (rapping, music) to dodge the pen (jailtime, also Jackie's a Brooklyn Dodger). And this all starts, because the guy dissects Jackie Robinson's name (Jack->Rob->Sin).

---

"I jerk off into books and give life to words/
leaving concepts stuck together you've probably never heard." - Immortal Technique

Uh. Ridiculous imagery and wordplay.

---

and of course.

"Sweet dollar tea from McDonalds... I drink that." - supahotfire.

"Sie wollen mein Herz am rechten Fleck, doch sehe ich dann nach unten weg.
Dort schlägt es in der linken Brust, der Neider hat es schlecht gewusst."

"They want my heart in the right [political] place, but then I look down.
There it beats in my left breast, the begrudger knew it badly."
– Rammstein, Links 2 3 4

"Wenn getanzt wird will ich führen, auch wenn ihr euch alleine dreht.
Lasst euch ein wenig kontrollieren, ich zeige euch wie's richtig geht."

"When people dance I want to lead, even if you spin on your own.
Let yourself be controlled a little, I show you how it's done."
– Rammstein, Amerika

"Du ahnst, du spürst, dass du nichts bist
Im Paradies kein Platz für dich ist
Du winselst um Gnade, am Ende deiner Zeit
Tut dir alles Leid"

"You suspect, you feel that you are nothing
That there's no place for you in paradise
You whimper for mercy, at the end of your time
You feel sorry for everything"
– Eisbrecher, Kein Mitleid

"Messer, Gabel, Schere, Licht
Sind für kleine Kinder nicht
Handgranate, Sturmgewehr
Lieben sie dagegen sehr"

"Knife, fork, scissors and light
Aren't for little children
Hand grenades, assault rifles however
They love very much"
– Eisbrecher, Amok

… wait, are we restricted to one line per song or one line in general?
And what is considered a line?

You're dripping like a saturated sunrise, you're spilling like an overflowing sink
You're ripped at every edge but you're a masterpiece and now I'm tearing through the pages and the ink

- Colors by Halsey

A friend shared this song with me recently. I am in love. To me it has gorgeous imagery and is great writing fodder.

Off the top of my head.... most anything from Miracle of Sound; Gavin. His songs are based on games so they always have a story going on behind the words, and the results are usually amazing. My favorite lines come from "Calamity (Bastion)" and "The Best I Can (The Walking Dead)." But for Calamity, I love every single line as it means something to me emotionally. But since were doing single lines, here's my favorite from the other:

Innocence is wasted
And I'm so sorry that you never can replace it
The darkest road ahead you're gonna have to face it
Cause I can't always be there...
For now I'll do the best I can.

Wait, that's a stanza, not a line. Ah.... at annyy rate... lines that can trigger an emotional response, usually to do with depressing/happy thoughts, linger with me. Alternatively, being able to rhyme "silhouette" with "still duet" and have it flow perfectly just flatly impressed me every time.

Go listen to Miracle of Sound, everyone. This concludes my promotional advertising.

"And I feel so fucking helpless when I can't be your relief"
The Amity Affliction - Don't Lean On Me

If there was ever a band who put everything into their music, it is these guys. All of their songs have such a powerful meaning. The line above isn't about one specific person. The song was written as a means to show how one of the band members feels when talking to and reading letters from some of the fans. It is both sad and beautiful, especially after reading this.
This is, in actual fact, my open letter: - The Amity Affliction News

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH" - Big Enough

Absolutely heartbreaking. I don't even know why, it just gets to me, you know?

I was just listening to this song and well... I had to add it in! The first time I heard it, I was going through some rough times, and especially with an ex roleplay partner (not on Iwaku) whose behavior was borderline emotionally abusive. This song finally gave me the courage to break off with them completely.

I especially love these lyrics

And since your history of silence
Won't do you any good,
Did you think it would?
Let your words be anything but empty
Why don't you tell them the truth?

I'm currently binging the original Dragon Ball and as soon as the opening played I was hit was extreme nostalgia. The Japanese version didn't really get me but the dubbed one... m y c h i l d h o o d

These lines hit me specially:
"You can climb on board, 'cause the Nimbus doesn't wait!
A fantastic journey for your dreams — a thrilling mystery!"
(followed by that drumming.. mmm)

"Let's try, try, try, look high and low!
Search the sky and the sea below!
Let's try, try, try, seize the day,
And make new friends along the way!"

JG Thirlwell / Foetus is a master lyricist.

Consider the song "Is that a line?" from the album "Deaf". The lyrics are dripping with double entendre, rife with the terror of old age, showing how even common sayings, or 'lines', have aged so very bitterly, and yet it's also funny (openly mocking the very concept of "lines"!). First time listeners might think Foetus' lyrics are chaotic, but when you really dig into them, that's when I feel the meanings of his words really hit.

Now I can't decide if its viscereal or visceral

Viscereal isn't a word, but this line alone effectively juxtaposes deep inward emotions in the guts and the sickness of the guts themselves (the viscera)

For every cloud that has a silver line
You'll find one which has decided to lead a life of crime
Who will dust off the career of a weather-eater in his prime

One such old-timey line that was flipped around to great effect.

The trouble with old actresses is that they've always got the same old plots

A triple entendre!
Plots, in the vulgar sense.
Plots, as in stories. All they have left are their old stories.
Plots, as in schemes, most likely to squeeze every second of life that's left.

Good to see another Miracle of Sound fan. That man is musical jesus.

I can't pick, so I'm going to pick one favorite lyric from all my favorite bands. These probably aren't my single, end-all favorites from each band, just what came to mind at first.

Miracle of Sound, from The Lucky Ones:
"Grave journeys keep taking their toll,
All of these small mercies congeal in the cold.
State of the dead empire, submit to the grip,
Of all these bred vampires, a grim leadership."

Avenged Sevenfold, from Danger Line:
"This one could be my last time
Some people call it war crime
I may be staring down a lethal sight"

Halestorm, from Dear Daughter:
"These are words
That every girl should have a chance to hear
There will be love
There will be pain
There will be hope
There will be fear"

Also Halestorm because I can't pick, from The Reckoning:
"Cross my heart, broke your promise, told me lies
Why did you
Watch me suffer, make me feel like I deserved to
Everybody takes, everybody breaks somebody's heart leaving someone alone
But this felt more like you ripping flesh from bone"

Starset, from Dark On Me:
"But I found in you, what was lost in me
In a world so cold and empty
I could lie awake just to watch you breathe
In the dead of night, you went dark on me."

Three Days Grace, from Painkiller (so I'm a Matt Walst fangirl sue me):
"I, I can be your painkiller, killer, killer
Love me 'til it's all over, over
'Cause I'm the shoulder you cry on
The dose that you die on
I, I can be your painkiller, killer, killer"

The Glitch Mob, from Between Two Points:
"Behind darkness
Beneath candles
Whispers waltz
Around our dreams"

Phantogram, from Cruel World:
"I used to see beauty in people
But now I see muscle and bones
You know I never wanted to hurt you
But I'm sorry, my friend, this is the end"

that's good for now, I might think of more to post later

EDIT: Since The Best I Can was mentioned, I want to point out my favorite part of that song; at one point, he transitions the chorus to the next verse by merging the sentences:
"Innocence is wasted
And I'm so sorry that you never can replace it
The darkest road ahead you're gonna have to face it
Cause I can't always be there
For now I'll do the best I...

Can you
Feel it on the wind?
Changes
Weakened from within"

Also it's worth noting that all of my custom titles are always song lyrics. The current one is from Upside Down by Miracle of Sound.

YES!!

It's so amazing how he changes it each time!!! The first "Can..... You" is like he's not sure about being a protector, but then he commits to it, and then after....
o(TwT)o it's so sad...

It's just like. His songs always 'mean something' and tell a story, I love him!

Yeah, he puts so much thought into them. I also love how he makes callbacks to older songs a lot, in the chords and the lyrics.

For example, in Revolution Spark he references Resistance:
"So see that flawless has no face,
Learn that rightness has no race
Reclaim, reconcile"

"Resist - remain
Flawless has no face
Resist - remain
Rightness has no race"

And

"We're lighting up the embers
We're rising from the dust"

"Hope is an ember in the dust
Spark of resistance will combust"

No-one's mentioned Aesop Rock yet, which I'm taking as further proof of your collective ability to find new ways to disappoint me.

Cos when it comes to lyrics, Aesop Rock is the fucking master.

Weird, bizarre, symbolical and at points absurd is probably the best way to describe the way this chap and his music. I'm struggling to pick just one song that exemplifies this, but from his recent album I thought I'd go with the track where he directly discusses the feelings and emotions he's been grappling with since the death of his friend and collaborator Camu Tao in 2008.

"Oh what a world
Any hack is a myth, any dap is a joke
Any map is a trick, any graph is a hoax
Ease on down, I'm burning up, I'm bleeding out
Knowing ain't half the battle
That's a bullshit quip written by some asshole
You can own what you are
And still sit around stoned in your car
Not doing shit, halfway to nill
Cranky and waiting for a boss key and hat full of bills
Get out the car, Aes"

Oh, yeah, that guy is phenomenal lyrically. For a variety of reasons (mostly that his flow was extremely inconsistent back from 07-09), I never quite got into him but 'None Shall Pass' and 'Daylight' are magnum opus level for sure.

None Shall Pass is a really strong example of him managing to balance insane, almost free association metaphor with very pointed focus.

Okay, woke to a grocery list, goes like this
Duty and death; anyone object, come stand in the way
You could be my little Snake River Canyon today
And I ran with a chain of commands
And a jetpack strapped where the backstab lands if it can
Fine, sign of the vibe in the crowd
When I cut a belly open to find what climb out
That's quite a bit of gusto he muster up
To make a dark horse rush, like, "Enough's enough!"
It must've struck a nerve so they huff and puff
'Til all the king's men fluster and clusterfuck
And it's a beautiful thing
To my people who keep an impressive wingspan
Even when the cubicle shrink
You got to pull up the intruder by the root of the weed
N.Y. Chew through the machine

pretty hype

You might wanna check out The Impossible Kid, then. He's a lot less surreal and and wild with the direction of his music these days, a lot more focused on consistently getting the point of the song across. Rings is probably the most on-the-nose track, but personally I think TUFF does it best.

"Can't tell if I'm a little withdrawn
Or dead dog sent to quote/unquote 'live on a farm'
The coke bottles tint film noir
Tripping out the milk bar
Poison horchata cup
Milf in the Zip Car
6 arms, 6 hand-styles like ships on scrimshaw
Part Def Jam part Dischord"

EDIT: You ain't wrong, tho. 'None Shall Pass' is god-tier hip hop.

"Like how a single word can make a heart open"

and "I might only have one match, but I can make an explosion"

This is my fight song - Rachel Patten

Genius Lyrics, eh? Here's a few of my favourites.

"In this holy reality, in this holy experience
Choosing to be here in...
This body, this body holding me
Be my reminder here that I am not alone in...
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion "

As part of the entirety of the album about Spiritual Enlightenment. Quite possibly one of my fave choruses.

"You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt"

I love both versions, but NiN's take it by an inch. Sometimes simple is best. Often two major themes are connected to this song such as coming back from a drug addiction and reflecting on said experience or one that is in line with the albums conceptual of one's "downward spiral" as the main character, after shooting himself in the first album track, describes his lack of leaving a legacy for his family and friends.

The Smiths also have lyrics that hit really hard. Take any song and you'll find something that's kernel to my life.

How Soon is Now?
"I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar/ I am the son and heir of the nothing in particular."

Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
"I was looking for a job, and then I found a job / And heaven knows, I'm miserable now / In my life, why do I give valuable time to people who don't care if I live or die?"
