Setting Overview

The continent now known as Shadowhaven is currently divided into two empires. The Angelican Empire occupies most of the continent, while the Shadayan Empire is much smaller and controls the northern most portion. Small autonomous nations exist within Shadowhaven, but it is only a matter of time before they are swallowed by the Angelican Empire. Of-course, this was not always the state of Shadowhaven, nor was the continent always known as such. It was only within the past 300 years that the continent was known as such. The Angelican Empire named the landmass "Shadowhaven" in opposition to the northern Shadayan empire whose culture, religion, and class system revolves around the art of Shadowmancery. The Shadayan empire knows the continent by its elven given name of Hearth.

The current year is 302 A.E (Angelican Era) and the harsh conflict known as the Border War has just concluded. It has left the Shadayan Empire in a state of squalor, but proved the northern dwellers and their dark arts are still a steadfast threat against the rapidly advancing Angelican Empire. It is theorized that the Angelican Empire would have absolute control of Shadowhaven if it was not for their Angel overlords demanding large tithes of resources and soldiers for some ulterior purpose. The Angelican Empire is a multi-faceted society that allows for many cultures and beliefs, but one belief is mandatory which is known as "Heaven's Service." It is essentially a universal pledge that all denizens of the Angelican Empire will not oppose their heavenly benefactors and will meet their demands promptly. This belief was officially mandated towards the end of the Ten-Thousand Year War when the land and sky pact was formed and the Ravencroft Enclave was officially given the support of The Angels which turned the war in their favor.

A small movement in the Borderlands, a land in neither control of the Angelican Empire or the Shadayan Empire, is known as the Scorn of Angels. It is an investigative rebellion backed by various Shadayan and Angelican individuals who seek to learn the truth of the heavenly overlords motives for their constant tithes. They have assembled an elite team each with their own grudges against the Angels to act as a force to conduct covert operations with the goal of exposing the unifying doctrine of "Heaven's Service" which inevitably cause the fall of the Angelican Empire and allow for the victims of said Empire to regain footing on the continent.

The Angelican Empire

Innovators and the home of master tacticians with the support of heaven itself. This multi-nation empire is open to many cultures and beliefs so long as they do not interfere with the Angel's motives. Five separate nations make up the Angelican Empire:

Ravencroft: The very center of the Angelican Empire and located right below
Heaven's Gate. It is the smallest nation out of the thirteen, but the one that has the most authority considering it is where the Basilisk (The name for the highest government office in the Angelican Empire) is located. Many people in Ravencroft pride themselves in being the closest to Heaven and have an intense sense of nationalistic pride. This is also where the Holy Guardian are trained which serves as the Angelican Empire's primary soldiers outside of the individual nations local auxiliary forces.

Southlands: Located at the very lowest point of Shadowhaven is the Angelican Empire's most recently conquered territory. It is a mostly swamp ridden area with abrupt untouched mountains full of valuable metals. A large presence of witches exist within the Southlands, which still have loyal followings by their individual Covens. Some Coven's have pledged themselves to the Angelican Empire, while some remain disloyal and continue to be a problem for occupying soldiers.

Tyver: Located just below the Borderlands is a land of rich forests and a culture that promotes environmental preservation. Many of the industrial centers in Tyver are located at the northern-most portion right beside the Borderlands. Many of the cities in Tyver are long stretches of roadways with multilayered buildings and roads to limit the amount of deforestation needed. Within the forests of Tyver exist a ferocious race of humanoids known as Neanderites who live a nomadic lifestyle pillaging Angelican cities. The thick forests serve as a perfect cover for them, which is the primary reason many petition for the detruction of Tyver's forests.

Sarzehnia: A nation that makes up most of the Eastern portion of Shadowhaven. It is part rolling fields that transitions into Savannah and finally into harsh desert. If one braves the desert and makes it to the coast - many ports with foreign connections can be found. Sarzehnia is home to the richest people in the Angelican Empire who also have connections to several off-continent mercenaries. This connection to foreign powers sees them being the most harshly occupied and oppressed people in the Angelican Empire. It is truly a land where the rich keep getting richer and the poor get poorer.

Geikenvold: The western land that still maintains a loose feudal system with more upwards mobility. Several kings own smaller portions of Geikenvold and they control vast armies of well-trained knights. Many of these knights go on to be recruited as commanders in the Holy Guardians. Geikenvold previously was a mostly agrarian society, which has been converted into the central hub of production for the Angelican Empire. Many castle-like factories exist that fuel the entire Empire.
