Heart of the Tomb

Several hours and a few struggles later, what remained of the treasure seeking crew had reached the heart of the tomb. On their way, they had rested and stocked up on supplies that had previously belonged to Collian researchers. They also discovered what was truly infesting this tomb and regularly getting in their way. Sedamon females.

The monsters described by the collians were actually Sedamon Females corrupted by eldritch magic native to the isles. It had fused their armor to their bodies in addition to causing other body abnormalities. They had the privelege to fight a couple of these "Monsters" first hand to recognize how out of their depth they truly were. Sedamons females were already stronger or as strong as most other races and they were fast as well. Coated in armor to make them resilient to most attacks on top of a mindless, drone-like obedience to some unknown force, they were all the more dangerous and unreasonable.

Fortunately, they had found a few holes in the temple that led to the outside for air. They were small and fragile. Only those the size of Collians could squeeze through them and tampering to make them wider had collapsed a few. They, at the very least, now had a means to rescue the remaining Collians that lived with their own rescue in the works.

(Entering from a stairway to the south that ended on the lowest floor)

The pressure in the air at this level was nearly unbearable. The malevolent energy was palpable. Ahead of the party was a massive chamber illuminated by blue flames. A central set of stairs led up to the highest level in the lower level. Dark figures and ominously, shifting shadows gave away the presence of many corrupted Sedamons in the central chamber. The wings to the left and right of the party were noteably less occupied.

What remained of the captured Collians were also immediately visible. The left and the right, along the walls in circular alcoves, were the birdmen restrained and unconscious. Glowing runes pulsed over each alcove and in each chamber. To those more in the know and based on research performed by the collians and the hands on study within the tomb, it appeared as though the corrupted Sedamons were about to perform an arcane magic ritual. It's purpose was unclear, but it seemed to be related to the giants depicted in the hieroglyphics of the tomb.

Those more versed in the Arcane would get an idea. Clearly whatever the sedamons were cooking up, if it was the sedamons at all, it was not good. Taking the collians away would clearly disrupt the ritual. A bit of magic would be required, but it would allow for them to carefully disrupt what was binding the Collians and free them from their spots. However, as the ritual, which they had little time left to stop, was disrupted, the Sedamons would surely descend upon them in overwhelming numbers.

Most would recognize the final floor of the tomb as being similarly constructed and likely just as prone to collapse as the rest of the tomb. A pitched battle here could be catastrophic for everyone involved. But Some may see opportunity in organized demolition.

Another caveat to the plans forming in the party's mind was what was up ahead on a central, raised platform. A massive sarcophogus stood with ethereal energy tendrilling up from the stone box as well as flowing into it along the lines and symbols of blue carved into the floor and walls. Whatever was inside was massive enough to dwarf the Sedamons and Sylvans. The corrupted Sedamons mindlessly looked to the stone box in unison, their metal faces expressionless and yet expectant like drones awaiting orders from their leader.

Furthest back in the room, a tare in space persisted, fueled by the arcane energies and some old technology. It regularly pictured scenes of desert, dune, and ruin. Likely a portal to the outside and perhaps how the Sedamons found their way in here in the first place.

Their mission, their survival, and the fate of things beyond their knowing were all in the party's hands. The question now was what would they choose? Save the collians, save themselves, save the islands, or perhaps they would find another way.

Interactions: Aquila @Nero Kunivas

It might have been her own idea, but Keone was still somewhat surprised when she hadn't ended up getting yeeted to her death. Through the thick and thin of it, they were able to make it all the way to the heart of the tomb. With the monsters being very different from anything she'd imagined they'd be, she as thrown a bit off guard.

However, upon spotting the ritual, she'd use her to tail pull Aquila out of whatever abyss he'd fallen into closer to whisper to him. "You're great at magic, right? I bet you'd be able to take over that ritual and make it so it binds the Sedamons instead of the Collians." If she couldn't find Aquila, she'd see if someone else would be capable and willing of casting such a spell.

Her only other plan was to rush through, demolishing anything on their way and escaping through the portal whilst leaving the tomb to bury corrupted the Sedamons and their entombed leader, sacrificing the Collians in turn. In case nobody ended up posting wanted to attempt the magic method, she'd end up (suggesting and later) resorting to this option.

Remy assessed the situation, a grim expression on his face at the situation before him. This was bad, really bad, and only Keone seemed up for doing anything.

"I think we should take what we have and try to explode the stone box. If you can distract them, I can get across to try and do something about that malevolent force. I don't think we should let that thing go free, even if it means sacrificing whose left in here. If not... In the pursuit of knowledge, I've trained in magic. I'm not a master or anything...but if no one else knows magic, I'm the best we've got. You'll have to distract them for me. Stay on the sides as much as you can. I don't want to see you fall to your death. " Remy said to Keone, at this point, this situation binding them together as partners in crime- the two of them (and anyone else) against this malevolent evil.

At the end of days, only Remy was still around. Snake and goose; an unexpected combination, but they'd try to be the heroes this rp world needed. She nodded. "Alright, I'll distract them for as long as I can, but I still think it's worth attempting to undo the ritual and have it backfire on the Sedamon's instead. At the very least we should see if we can use it to buy enough time to save those Collians before exploding that thing."

With their plan made, it was time to set it in motion, which was easier said than done. Her first plan, in so far as it was worthy of such a name, simply consisted of slithering along the sides in the shadows, hoping to manage reaching further forwards in the room (somewhere top-left) before being spotted. From there, she'd take cover behind one of the pillars in the room and lay aim one of the Sedamons casting the ritual, hoping to shoot her through the head. Hit or miss, it should bring all their attention upon her and hopefully clear away the left side of the floor for Remy to pass through as he wished.

She planned to keep firing for as long her her health and ammunition would last or until Remy and/or Collians were saved, after which she'd make one final break-out effort to get herself (and at the very least Remy) through that portal in the hopes that there wouldn't simply be more enemies on the other end.

Keone's size and build did not lend itself to stealth, but creeping along the edges of the passage and chambers seemed to work. She passed at least a dozen Sedamon Monsters without any of them turning to look at her. They all seemed to have the red gazes affixed to the central stone slab that towered over everything in the room. This close to it, Keone could feel the tension in the air even more. It stirred feelings of anxiety and anticipation for whatever was about to happen.

Keone would note a couple things as she worked her way to the back of the chamber. Pusling blue energy would streak toward the central stone slab with every pulse. The slab itself would shudder each moment as well. Like the feeling of a loud bass noise in one's chest, Keone would be subject to unusual forces that could further stir her emotions. The Collians she passed seemed to be unconscious, staring eyes awake at nothing, or possibly dead. The blue energy moving around the room seemed to be siphoned from them. Passing the central portion of the massive chamber and the slab, Keone noticed for a moment two large eyes staring 'into' her from atop the slab. Looking directly at them, they would disappear into the blue smoke but the next pulse from the stone could be felt even harder in the core of Keone's being. The Sedamons noticed.

Nearly to the back of the chamber where she would start to pelt those overseeing the ritual with distracting fire, Keone realized 2 things:
1. there was no Sedamon leading the magic ritual.
2. The Sedamons all shifted their demonic heads to look in her direction to leer at her with red eyes. A few split away from the rest that were closer to her and advanced on her position. They moved hunched over and with a bit of a hop skip to their lurch.
They carried no weapons, but the sharp points on their armor could easily shred flesh if weaponized and their strength was capable of breaking bone by itself. Keone would be free to fire upon those approaching as she planned but would find the shots would plink or dissipate against the armor, seemingly causing little damage or reason for them to pause. Even hunched over like apes, the monster sedamons were still a foot taller taller than Keone.

Remi, meanwhile, was left alone in the back. He could not make out what was happening, but did note a stir in the Sedamons as the massive stone on the dias over everything grew more active. Time was of the essence.

Seeing that Keone was busy with the Sedamons, Remy took the opportunity to look around, his mind racing at a mile per minute. Fuck, that looked like magic- from the amount of training he had on the subject. It wasn't a lot, but it would have to do. While the Sedamons had their attention turned to Keone, Remy raced towards the sarcophagus, his feet as light as he could make them.

He knew two things about magic- it needed a sacrifice, and it was a lot harder to get right than it was to mess up. So in theory, all he had to do was fuck up the spell with a sacrifice and magic.
Sucking in a breath, he took out his knife once he was standing in front of the sarcophagus, and stabbed his left arm, dragging it down the backside of his arm- away from the veins, Then, with the blood sacrifice hopefully provided, he asked for help with the sarcophagus, speaking words of power for magical assistance. If he needed more of a sacrifice, he would start making more cuts, careful to keep them to non-lethal pathways on the skin- like at the hips, on the stomach and the back- opening wounds that were old and silvery at that point. Whatever had to be done, he would do it, to save the Sedamons, the Collians, and Keone.

Keone wasn't comfortable with the weird magic ritual that was going on here. Not in the slightest. She almost 'eeped' when she noticed two large eyes staring into her from atop the slab, but she bit her tongue instead. When the Sedamons advanced on her, she realized her situation could only be described by one word. Fucked. Her bullets simply bounced off their armor like it was nothing. She exchanged her guns for swords, but feared they wouldn't fare much better against them. The numbers were overwhelming and the enemy was both stronger and more numerous. Her best option now was to keep buying time for Remy with a game of cat and mouse, or rather, snake and sedamon.

She quickly climbed a nearby pillar by wrapping herself around it. If she estimated the 'intelligence' of these Sedamon correctly, they'd try to bring the pillar down rather than climb it, so she'd need to be ready to launch herself towards the next one with her tail and whatever strength she could muster. Perhaps she could even steer falling pillars closer towards another to hop across that way. If she could keep up such a tactic, she'd be able to buy Remy valuable time. If she couldn't keep it up, she'd have to resort to slithering away whilst fighting defensively, only defending herself when needed and trying to outslither and dodge her opponents as much as she could.

She would attempt to keep buying time until either Remy's magic worked or until he passed out from trying. If, at any point, she'd spot Remy incapacitated, she'd go with her emergency plan of trying to get to him and drag him through the portal to escape the place in a last-ditch break-out attempt.

The Sedamons that moved to Keone's position mechanically looked up at her for a moment before doing anything. They then looked back at the pillar she was slithering up. With claws that shone with a metallic sheen, their brutish strength allowed them to dig into the stone and cling to the pillar as they had displayed previously in the temple. Making hand and footholds for themselves as they went, they climbed as easily as taking the stairs. Keone was running out of time and room. The vaulted cieling of the chamber was high but not infinite. All the while, the occasional coelescing of ethereal mist about the massive central slab formed eyes that would watch with glee at the state of affairs.

Meanwhile,

Remi lost too much blood after the arm went numb and cold. He too felt cold. Unsteady on his feet, he began to forget what he was about as his mound clouded. His breathing became rapid as the cold dark soon took him in his confusion.

"One sugar or two, dear,"

Asked the Madam. Remy would recall the White tea party he was at. It was a private party for just he and the madam. She was trying to serve him tea but he couldn't reply. He was too busy lost in thought.

"Very well. I'll prepare it how I like it then. Such a naughty boy. Making me do everything, really. You know you could try harder to meet a girl half way."

The Madam was obviously teasing as she served Remi the cup of tea on the white porcelain saucer in a white porcelain cup. The cup was filled with a thick, black ichor that sloshed over the sides as Remi took it. His own arm covered in similarly black oozing marks suddenly came into view. There was pain. The black burned. Remy looked up, still unable to speak, and the Madam gave a large smile that touched her eyes. Black ichor oozed out of every opening of her face including her eyes as she smiled. She could have been laughing but everything was oddly muted until,

"Do you not like the way I 'take it', my dear?"

More pain for Remi as all the unheard laughter suddenly piled on as the White Room tea party turned black and with it his vision clouded and failed him again. He would wake up some time later...

Remi and Keone would find themselves in the large chamber, but several things had changed. The eery blue glow no longer coated everything. The atmosphere of the room was noticeably less malicious and overwhelming. There was no longer this overwhelming pulse. Things felt hectic but more at east. The large stone at the center of the room was shattered in several pieces. Even the 'little' pieces were large pieces weighing in at a few tons. Also noteworthy and surprising, Sedamon women, normal Sedamon woman, were following the direction of the Collian researchers and moving about at a panicked pace. Some were trying to help tend to Keone and Remi. Some were securing supplies and taking note of the chamber and what there was the discovered. Researchers to the end. There was a area of the floor where several covered faces lay lifeless.

The crew of the Happy Return had succeeded in their mission of finding and saving as many of the collians as they could, but not without casaulties and sacrifices all around. Remi's arm, a bloody mess would likely need amputation. In and among the blood and wound was a sticky blackness the Collians claimed was rot but their attempts to remove it when they were patching Remi up had failed. A permanent taint so long as he kept the arm...

Some good and bad news. The portal at the far end of the chamber was destroyed and rendered inoperable during the commotion that followed Remi falling unconscious. However, the back half of the chamber had also caved in to reveal a tall sandy dune to the surface and an early morning sunrise to greet them.

The Happy Return was compensated for their efforts though the price they paid was perhaps not worth the impressive take in the end. What exactly was it down there in the depths? What darkness brooded elsewhere just out of sight. There was more treasure seekers where the rest came from, and more adventures for the current and future crew of the Happy Return, but those would be tales and mysterious for another time....
