Impure Light

  1. Well, this is my first roleplay since joining here, haha. I've had this idea with me for a long time, and have been shaping it as I progressed with it. Hopefully it'll start off well, and keep on strong.

    Little is known of the time before the Cataclysm. What little is known, is at that time, the world was at its peak in technology. Through new innovations and ideas, people prospered. Religion, once threatened to be known as an "old, outdated idea", became a powerful, righteous force.

    It is said the Cataclysm was caused by the Scientists who wished to prove God existed through the marvels of logic and science.

    The High Priests, eager to convert non-believers, stood side by side with the Scientists.

    No one knows what happened; some say God got angry with the humans. Others say the experiment completely backfired. But what is sure, is that the devestation their experiment caused changed the face of their world forever. The High Priests blamed the Scientists for trying to prove the existence of a Holy Entity with the blasphemous sciences, while the Scientists accused the High Priests for worshipping the demonic being that caused the destruction of their world.

    Had the two sides not warred, not fought, the world might well have recovered from the tragedy.

    But it was not to be.

    Knowledge and techology was lost, religions destroyed, and the world was torn further asunder by the war.

    After the Cataclysm, a new power was dicovered. Magic, known to the religious as the Holy Power and the scientists as Energy, pulsed through the veins of every living being, and became a prominent power.

    Using the Holy Power, the Paladins rose to power. Believing all sciences and technology to be evil, they strove for it all to be banished. They ruled their provinces with an iron fist, allowing the High Templars to do as they wished in the name of the All-God. Their Holy Power is raw, using it directly from the Source, and only for battle.

    In opposition, the Technicians, the decendants of the Scientists, came into being. Claiming the Paladins to be fanatical and blind, they used Energy to power many types of machinery and weaponry. Technicians drew on the Energy and imbued their techology with spells, or simply using it as a substitute energy force, when not using steam or Clockwork.

    Each city is clearly marked in terms of affiliation. Cities ruled by Paladins have a massive pillar in its center, with a statue of the All-God at the pinnacle. Cities ruled by Technicians, however, have a massive, four-sided clock tower in its center, with one face on each side. Each face faces either north, east, south, or west, and is marked respectively. Each side fights the other, in a hope of becoming the dominant, if not only, force in existence. Many commoners populate this world as well, and many side with one power or the other.

    In this roleplay, we will be with the Techs, trying to restore humanity to what it once was. In this world, electricity is very limited, almost always used only for homes and machinery used to build. Oil is in abundance, but the knowledge needed to refine it into gas is lost.

    ~~Tech Magic~~

    Enchantment~ Techs can enchant weapons and other things they make with Gears. Gears can be bought, sold, found, and, if skilled enough, made. They are, as the name implies, gears, each with its own symbol. There are many common gears, such as ones of Fire Enchanting, that eventually wear off and need to be replaced, but there are some that are incredibly rare, near legendary ones, that can possibly tear open rifts in the very air itself. Most gears need to be replaced after a while, but there are a few that need never be replaced.

    Possession~ There are many pieces of Lost Technology, most made from before the Cataclysm. They are in a wide variety, from things as insignificant as toasters to things as powerful as a massive robot. Techs who are Possessors can use their Energy to reactivate these ancient machines and use them however they wish, even if they weren't meant to be used that way to begin with. A weak Possessor might only be able to possess a toaster, but the truly powerful can manipulate the ever rare robots and machines. Possessors are rare and so few exist.

    Recognition~ An ability just as rare as Possession, a Recognizer can use his Energy to Recognize a piece of machinery and, whether or not it has been discovered before, instantly know how to use it. Strong Recognizers can Recognize machines that are larger, more complex, and older than weaker Recognizers.

    The Tech's ranks are as follows, from lowest to highest~~~ Tinker-> Mechanic-> Technician. Technician is also a generic term used for the whole group.

  2. Name: Aeryn Mis'carde
    Age: 21
    Rank: Technician
    Tech Type: Enchantment
    Weapon: Aeryn wields a large broadsword, though it is designed to open up from one side and release a different type of sword at will. The sword contains a Dementional Gear inside it which allows for the swords function, and the slot which opens up runs off of a mix of steam power and Clockwork.
    Personality: Aeryn is usually carefree and loud, always flirting with women and joking around. He's known to be lazy and doesn't like working any more than he needs to to get by. However, he seemes to become somber when the Paladins are mentioned and seems to momentarily become filled with a cold hatred.
    Physical Appearance: Aeryn is fairly tall and has a crazy mess of pure, white hair. his left eye is an emerald green color, with flecks of blue, but his right eye is covered by an eyepatch with two strings, the eyepatch itself a strange, trapezoid in shape. On the eyepatch, however, is the symbol of a Technician; three gears interlocked. He's usually dressed in light, loose clothing, but likes wearing a cloak just around his shoulders, set in place by steel shoulder guards, more for flair than convinience.
    Past/Backstory: Aeryn, as a child, was raised by the Paladins. His father was a High Templar and his mother a High Priestess. He trained for quite a few years, until he was thirteen. On his thirteenth birthday, during the ceremony on which he would become a full Paladin, he was struck by a rogue spell. The Paladin who had cast it had been tampering with Technician magic, to better understand it, and had cast an unknown spell. When Aeryn awoke, he realized his eye had survived the spell, but was different. The iris was in the shape of a gear, and seemed to be spinning. Believing this a sign that Aeryn would betray them all, the Paladins attempted to capture and kill him. Aeryn managed to escape, however, with the help of a strange woman, who later turned out to be a spy for the Technicians. Traveling with her, he began learning Tech magic, accepting her as his teacher. His teacher, however, despite training him, never discovered how he felt about the Paladins, about whether or not he fully relinquished their teachings.<!--IBF.ATTACHMENT_58387-->

    Weapon: A hand-sized radio that Evander can utilize to emit sounds of varying frequency, from the extremely high to deafen and harm his enemies to a regular one at low volume to ease tempers, along with many others he's only just discovering the effects of using.
    Personality: Quiet and a little antisocial, he's not a mean fellow, just unsure of how to react to other people. Intelligent and insightful he is nevertheless socially awkward.

    Past/Backstory:
    Evander was brought into the world by a union that was secret and his existence was not meant to have been. His mother was a beautiful and young technician, while his father was a paladin of rank. Learning that their secret affair had produced a child, his mother was overjoyed and his father begged her only to take his money and never tell a soul of the child's father. Proudly, his mother raised him, thrilled to find out that he was a technician. His father provided money in secret to the child until he learned that his son was a rare technician.

    On Evander's sixteenth birthday, his father sent men to kill his bastard child, fearing that he would reveal his lineage and that it would be believed. Evander searched, in panic, for some means of protection. What he found was a relic of the past, some soft of machine that his mother had told him was for creating sound. Acting on instinct, he used it to defend himself. The men his father sent were knocked unconscious by the blast of supersonic sound pointed in their direction. Evander fled and has since lived job to job in an attempt to spare his mother.

    Physical Appearance: Gruff appearance, short beard and long ragged black hair. Wears a dirty grey hoodie and dusty brown cargo pants. Also wears large, brown work boots. <o:p></o:p>

    Past/Backstory: Grew up in a world of destruction, learning from his father to use the old tools and create his own from the wreckage. His mother was killed when his father used his abilities as a recognizer technician to bring a pre-Cataclysm defense turret online. Its “friend or foe” targeting system was broken and it took aim at Wesley’s mother and fired. Wesley’s father was able to disable the machine, but it was too late for his mother. Unable to cope with what he caused, his father slit his wrists while Wesley slept. Wesley woke up and saw his father, but didn’t feel any grief because he blamed his father for his mother’s death. He grabbed his things and left his father in their shelter lying in a pool of his blood. He learned to fend for himself and live off the land, relying on a single rifle he made from PVC pipe and an air compression chamber. He grew up staying away from major cities, but as he got older he wondered if he should attempt to enter one and end his voluntary solitude.

    Weapon: Prosthetic steam powered chainsaw

    Personality: Is somewhat of a loner though he wishes he could find a friend of some kind. Has a tendency to think out loud to himself. Because of his high IQ he finds it hard to fit in with most people.

    Physical Appearance: shaggy black hair that is never brushed. His left hand is missing. average height. Wears a basic flannel shirt with blue jeans. Wears a pair of black tennis shoes.

    Past/Backstory: On the night of his birth, Ashs parents were killed by Paladins. His parents barely managed to hide the newborn infant before being mercilessly slaughtered. He was found 2 days later in the ruins of his house and was taken to an orphanage. While there he was keen on studying up on the ways of recognition and discovered he was quite good at it.
    Ash ran away at the age of 15 due to his inability to fit in with any of the other orphans who constantly mocked him due to his intelligence.Because of a birth defect he lost the use of his left hand. Deciding that he needed a weapon he fashioned a prosthetic chainsaw that ran on steam and removed his left hand. He swore that he would use it to avenge his parents death and destroy the Paladins. He now currently wanders aimlessly trying to both find vengeance and companionship of some kind.

    Weapon: A thin gold sword that is extremely light weight. There is a place for a gear to be attached near the hilt, usually Karen attaches a feather gear which decreases the weight of the already light sword to virtually nothing.

    Personality: Karen is a sarcastic young woman who hides her insecurities like an ace up her sleeve. She is very loyal once her trust is gained but never loses sight of the big picture compared to individual lives.

    Physical Appearance: Karen is a tall slender woman with narrow hips and a fairly small breasts. She has dark brown hair the is roughly shoulder length. Her eyes are round and teal. She has a heart shaped face and a wicked smirk. She has a red duster coat she wears constantly but if for some reason it must be left behind she will wear something else red.

    Past/Backstory: Karen is the direct descendants of Kinkalu, one of the original Scientists. She was born and raised in the ranks of the technicians understanding early on that the her goal in life was to defeat the Paladins though in her young heart she also dreamt of restoring the world. Wishing to be of great help Karen attempt every known variety of technician abilities only to disappointedly discover that her ability was to sense gears and differentiate their abilities. Realizing that epic combat was not how Karen was going to be able to win the war she extensively studied medicine and techniques to combine Energy and Gears in medical treatments.
