It's funny cause cookies aren't a positive or negative rating.

I've always seen them as "that's nice, now stick this in your mouth and quit making noise".

That's probably why he chose them. Of all the ratings, they are the least likely for people to get upset over.

It invalidates them. It would remove any pretense at significance to the system, and potentially lead to the whole system's elimination.

Basically, because positive and negative ratings actually show up on your summary and ride you through the member-ranks.

Technically cookies are a currency, just not a valid one in most, if not all stores.

Anything can be used as a currency, given that at least two parties making a trade agree to it.
