Hidden by the Sea

"We find a person compatible and..." Kai tried to think of the word. "Mark them." She shrugged, as if it were an everyday thing for everyone. She wondered if he wanted a demonstration. She smiled at his nervousness as she said. "No. I have not mated." She giggled, trying to think of how he could be nervous about her being taken. She was a warrior. She didn't go seduce the sailors unless they were on the wrong part of the sea.

She swam away from him, bored of just hanging by the wall. She swam around, doing flips underwater and just generally having fun.

"Mark them?" he asked aloud in confusion as she swam away. His brow furrowed at the word. He didn't know if it was like the animals of the wild that protected what was their possession. He pulled his satchel near him and pulled his sandwich out taking a bite and setting it down beside him as he pulled out his journal pad. He scribbled what he had learned about her so far, drawing images as he went. Images of her eyes, her hair... then he began drawing her body and he found himself blushing, he had not wanted to look at her in that way but his mind thought otherwise. She was a beautiful creature and the thought that she could turn human..... my God his mind wouldn't stop thinking about the possibility.

Kai swam around, thinking. She thought for a bit before going back to him, avoiding his sandwich and notebook. Carefully, she moved so that she lightly bit his neck. As quickly as she was there, she was gone. She swam down toward the bottom of the pool, waiting for him to yell at her. She waited for him to start yelling curses at the bite. She didn't want to hear him yell, but she had decided to mark what was hers. The bite mark that normally would have faded by now, stayed.

[Well that's sweet yet sexy lol]

Robert was so concentrated he didn't notice when she had come up from the water. He froze as she came close, her mouth coming to his neck and biting him. She was gone in a blink and his hand came up to his neck. It hadn't hurt, just a nip. He felt his breath hitch in his throat as an unknown sensation burst through him. He cleared his throat, brushing his hand through his hair and closing the book.

Is that what she meant by marking? Did that mean he was compatible? He blushed dark red and he felt oddly excited in more ways than one. He had never been in a relationship with anyone let alone had his neck touched by anyone. The feeling fled through him and he fought to control his thoughts. Dear God she was irresistible.

Kai swam around worriedly. What would he say? Was he mad? Would he reject her? For a mermaid she was quite plain. She didn't have any vibrant colors or charming smiles. That was why she was a warrior, and not a seducer. She poked her head above the water, looking at Robert nervously. She had never tried to give someone a mark before. If it stayed, it meant they were compatible. If it was gone, she would have to keep searching for another lover, though she doubted she would find one. She had never been so enticed by another person before.

His eyes fell upon hers and he gave her a small smile. He hoped deep inside that she hadn't just marked him to explain what she meant.... of course that was the man part of him speaking, the Robert that didn't live inside a lab coat day in and day out. He felt warm all over and he didn't know what that meant for her but he knew what it felt like for him.

"I... humans don't mark... I wasn't expecting it. I'm not mad... in the least bit." he said watching her nervous gaze. "It makes me feel special... happy." he said being honest with her. There was no point in lying to her. So what if Professor Alba had warned him to keep himself from falling for her charms. She wasn't charming him... he was interested in her because of who she was.

Kai hesitated to swim over to him. She was still nervous. She really wanted this guy to like her. She wanted this human as her own and wanted to show him the wonders of her world. He seemed interested in her, and she was interested in him. Taking a deep breath, she swam over to him. She started to speak to him, but in her native tongue. He could understand her as she spoke. "I want to know more about you... you interest me. Would you be willing to be my mate?"

Robert looked at her as she moved closer to him and he could hear her speaking a language he had never heard yet somehow mysteriously he could understand her. His eyes grew wide for that reason first and then for what she asked. He had known her only two days but even now, he had never had a connection like this to any human before. Sure he hadn't dated but he had seen women that were attractive and not a single one had made it to his dreams.

There was something about Kai that baffled him and amazed him. Sure you could peg it off at the fact that she was a mermaid but he knew it was much deeper than that. He wanted to know everything about her. To see her for who she really was outside of this damn prison. He wanted to understand her and help her escape even if it would cost him his job and most probably his freedom.

"How...how is that possible?" he asked looking at himself and then her. "I do not want you to choose to leave water for me. I don't see how I could survive floating about in the ocean for you very long." he said at the thought of living in the ocean the rest of his life floating about seeing her whenever she came to the surface. Things just didn't make any sense to him but his heart sped up as he looked at her. He longed there could be a way.

"There is a ritual we preform... It allows a human to grow gills that act the same way as ours do while retaining their human form. It is painful though. Like a mermaid transforming into a human." She said, touching his sides where his gills would be. She didn't want him to give anything up unless he wanted to. This was the only way she knew how to get to know someone. She would take it slow, make sure he was ready for it all before trying anything with him. For now, it would be like they were just friends.

Robert shivered when she touched his sides. Not because he was repulsed but because it caused fire to light as he sensed her touch. There was so much unknown. "What does the ritual entail?" he asked wondering if it was the same for when a mermaid chose to become human. "Is it permanent?" he asked. He was sure it sounded like he would change his mind but that was not how he meant it. He wanted to know everything about mermaids. Their lives and customs, rituals included.

He was a little reserved of course, but an excitement peeked in his mind. If they were able to fall into that kind of relationship, as he truly did hope, he wouldn't bat his eyes once at joining her at sea. There was nothing for him here on land other than work and being alone the rest of his life.

"It is permanent but it only appears when you are completely underwater. The ritual consists of the mermaid pulling the human under water and keeping him or her under for ten minutes. The two must swap blood during this time through a kiss and when the ten minutes are done, the mermaid drags the human back up. This is extremely painful for humans because they cannot hold their breath for too long." Kai explained, keeping her hands on his sides. She looked him in the eyes, showing only gentleness and not the ferocity that comes from her hunting.

"A.... swapping blood... would that provide the oxygen needed to keep the heart pumping? Just thinking about it makes my lungs burn." he said softly with a smile. He relaxed at her touch. It felt nice even. He imagined being drug down to the watery depths and kissing her for then minutes. That made him blush. It was so easy to do that whenever he thought of Kai. Maybe this is what it felt like to truly like someone and imagine intimate moments with them.

"If the human backs out for even a minute though, they will die." Kai said, moving to lay her head in his lap. She hated the thought of Robert even getting a scratch, let alone dying. She slowly played with her tale. She lifted her tail for him to see clearly. "Would you like to feel?" She asked, trying to change the subject. She had not let the others get close enough to touch a her finger tips let alone her tail. She trusted this man more than she probably should.

Robert tried to keep himself calm as her head came to rest on his lap. He was a man after all and she was a scarcely dressed mermaid. Sure not traditionally what would probably arouse a man's interest but she was gorgeous nonetheless. He blinked his eyes quickly and smiled. "I'd love to." he said holding his hand out. His hand came to brush softly against her tail. It was damp and cold to the touch. The scales fit together perfectly like a little jig saw that gave her flexibility. "Amazing." he whispered. He wouldn't grow a tail though, as amazing as he found hers. She had said he would remain humanlike but with gills. Wouldn't he be prey to sharks and stuff?

"I will protect you. Nothing will ever hurt you." Kai said, moving her tail to let him touch some of her fins. She kept close to him, not wanting him to leave. One of her worst fears was being alone. That's why she hated her tank.

Robert knew in his heart that the words that Kai spoke were true. She would bring no harm to him and wouldn't allow it to come his way either. His hands moved down the end of her tail the water droplets transferring from her tail to his hands. He smiled, fascinated, as his fingers ran along her caudal tail.

"Beautiful." he murmured his blue eyes peering up at her face as his hand continued to feel the softness of her fin. It was much different than the rest of her tail. The scales were smooth but stronger and hard compared to the billowy fins.

Kai couldn't suppress a shiver as he touched her tail and fins. She loved and hated his touch. It made her feel warm and fuzzy inside, but she knew that he could kill her in an instant. Humans destroyed. She was afraid that he would break her as she let him do these things. Maybe he would choose that assistant over her. She wasn't sure if she could take that. She slipped back underwater, not wanting him to see her sad.

Kai was quick to leave his side slipping into the water and swimming away. Robert didn't know if it had been something he said and he frowned, a pang of guilt and sadness weighing on him. He flipped his journal pad back open continuing his work. He had to document everything he knew so far, everything he had learned and studied of her. Even if he didn't turn it in to Professor Alba, he had always been diligent with his work.

The thought kept coming to the back of his mind though and so on a separate page he drew an underwater scene. Their lips together, her hands around his neck, his arms around her waist and the transfer of blood and energy, gills forming on his body, them becoming one. It was all more than a sci fi movie could ever hope to even create. No one had the creativity to make a story remotely close to what the truth was.

She had said humans destroyed. The comment got his mind to light afire. Was that what the mermaids did? Were they protectors of the sea, creating balance from the chaos humans made? All biological balance changes could be the result of the hard work of mermaids. It was mindblowing. So much could change in the world if it weren't for the fact that most humans couldn't be trusted. In a dream world he could create a portable tank and take Kai to his government, hell a meeting with the president and have her explain how stupid and inconsiderate humans were being with the gifts given to them, this earth. It wouldn't do a damn thing. She would be pegged off as a freak and ordered to be imprisoned in a zoo or an acquarium the rest of her days if not dissected in the name of "science." He knew and understood quite well why Kai hated humans. They had all shown her their true colors. He vowed to show her the good side, the true side of some humans. Not all were as terrible as the ones that had dealt with her before. He was different... and he was beginning to realize just how much he cared for her.

Kai swam around underwater, playing with a few fish that had swam into the pool. She wanted to trust Robert. She really, really did. Humans had all hurt her though. They destroyed her world and trapped her in a prison. She cared for a human though. She wanted him to be with her and touch her. However, she still had to be wary. He could easily stab her back if he wanted to. She stalked a few fish, making sure her fighting skills were still intact.

A familiar voice greeted her ears. The professor came every day from her memory. She didn't like that woman at all. Professor Alma always wanted to hurt her.

Robert slammed his book shut as soon as he heard Professor Alba's voice. He stuffed the book into his satchel standing quickly as the incorrigible woman walked in, her heels making clicking noises on the ground. She stood with her hands behind her back surveying what was going on. Robert blinked his eyes as if waiting for her to say something redundant and annoying.

"Professor. What do we owe the pleasure to today?" he said smoothly. He did not say it disrespectfully but his disdain for her could be heard in his words.
