Melaina Sullivan
Melaina wished she had the power to have some dragged straight into the depths of hell. It would make dealing with this whole 'Daisuke' thing a problem for in the afterlife, where it seemed to be a lot more fitting. To his remark that she had to try trusting someone to see if they were trustworthy, she couldn't stay silent.
"I'm not exactly in the luxury position of being able to risk losing another eye, thank you very much." She wasn't sure what kind of wise man he was quoting, but she figured it was the type that'd become wise after looking at the bottom of their glass a few too many times.
To her surprise, the oddball whom had been cleaning floors made sense once more, only leaving out the fact that they were already betrayed by this group due to coming here under false pretences. She also didn't like how he was still willing to be obedient, as it made him the type to be easily sent do his death as a pawn. Of course, if he'd be her own pawn, that'd have been useful, but in this situation it made her feel like she was etching closer and closer towards being disposed off. It's why she was incredibly thankful when her words were back-up somewhat by Caela. It wasn't as much as Melaina would've wanted, but at least it expressed just enough doubt for Melaina to have an opening later on, as Caela outright questioned Lucien's planning and tactical skills.
Tyler's words, on the other hand, confused her. A sudden ultimatum of being 'in or out' was not exactly what she had planned to reach, so she really needed to adjust her tactics somehow. Lucien almost managed to motivate her a bit by mentioning the ability to wipe away her past, but he had to ruin it by acting like mentioning his name had any value. After all, names could be faked, and he had already been called Lucien by both Tyler and Otto, making the dramatic reveal quite a bit less dramatic. It made her realise that dealing with Lucien was not going to be easy. On the other hand... he had given her quite a neat idea.
Although she was immediately on edge by the sudden entrance made by Alina, she was quick to calm down once she realized it wasn't an attack. For some reason, the person seemed somewhat familiar to her, but she couldn't quite place it, so she figured she'd go back to the plan at hand. She couldn't quite deal with the absurdity of such a person right now, not when her own safety was already on the line through other dangers. It was also why she only vaguely noticed the entrance of two foxfolk.
She turned towards Tyler once more.
"Alright, you've convinced me that your ideological conviction is strong, but I'd like to ask a few things. Is there any chance that we can talk one on one? I doubt that you have any reason to fear me, and I'll show a sign of trust by assuming that I'm not just giving you an opportunity to get rid of me out of the public eye."
If Tyler would agree, Melaina would climb down from the table by first letting herself fall back into the chair, then letting herself fall back upon the ground, from where she would eventually follow Tyler in silence. On the inside, however, she was choosing her next words carefully. Lucien had managed to hit home in one aspect; Melaina had little future in front of her, and this plan, no matter how odd, extreme, or badly planned it might be, could be a ticket towards a slightly better future. Once they had reached their destination, Melaina would start off by a careful apology.
"First of all, I'd like to apologise. I've been betrayed more often than I can count, so when I suddenly heard this wasn't just a simple robbery, I immediately assumed the absolute worst. That seems to have been unfair towards you. For as much as it felt like a set-up, the reasons for using such a method are self-explanatory enough to justify it." She figured it was tactically the best to leave out her objections towards the horrible introduction of the real plan.
Having hopefully set a bit of a more friendly mood, both by surrendering her well-being to Tyler's whims by being alone with her, as well as by apologising, it was time for step three.
"It also seems like our values and customs differ a lot, which I believe has made things far more difficult than they need to be. For example, to me, a name is nothing more than a way to get a specific person's attention, so Lucien's token of trust holds little worth to me, especially after I had already heard his name through your mouth. Another example is how I am used to experiencing the sharing of food as the ultimate test of trust. Those whom eat food that they haven't prepared themselves risk being poisoned, and therefore I can only see the act of offering someone you just met something to eat or drink as an extremely rude insult. It's like asking them to trust you without a shred of doubt."
She figured she'd better not pause for too long, to make sure her point wouldn't come across the wrong way.
"Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to blame anyone, I'm merely trying to explain why all of this is confusing to someone like me. My size and ability have made me require a lot of distrust to survive. However, from what I've gathered, those that truly mean nothing but harm aren't as patient as you have been, so for that you have both my thanks as well as the current amount of trust I'm giving you."
With that out of the way, it was time for the final step.
"With regards to the latter, I believe it is required for me to say that seeing me as a trusted companion might make you more enemies than you'd expect. There are enough people after my ability to write scrolls to form a small army, even without taking the Inquisition into consideration. I'm a high profile target on both sides of the law, and harbouring me will mean both sides might give you trouble for it. If you're willing to take that risk, I'm willing to take the risk of trusting you."
Having put all her cards on the table, Melaina figured that this was the best option to gamble her life upon. After all, she really doubted they'd let her leave alive. On the other hand, if adhering to this plan was indeed more than a set-up, the outcome would be extremely desirable. It exchanged the risk of trying not to be captured or killed and the reward of living another day in freedom with the risk of being betrayed by this people and the reward of actually making a change. A fair exchange, and at this rate, the best she could hope for. After all, all her previous attempts to obtain more hand been mercilessly shut down.
