Herald's Of Change

An Ageless Empire brought together through blood, and through blood it must be shattered...

Since time immemorial, the Old Empire has ruled the all of the sunless thundering lands of Eruvia and her people, kept together by the strength of it's immortal Tsar and the loyalty of the nobles who cling to him desperately. On all of the three continents that the Old Empire controls, few know any semblance of freedom. Fear of the magic of the nobles and the army of monstrosities that the Tsar keeps in the spawning pits combined with thousands of years of oppression has beaten any resistance out of those suffering. At the bottom are the hapless Skaves, a class of humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, and other races who sustain themselves through hard menial labor, keeping the Empire's machine steadily going. They labor in the fields and mills to produce food and cloth, or in the forges and factories of the Empire, producing the weapons and tools that keep the Empire in control. Only slightly better off are the Artisans, a class of Skave that can perform more skilled labor, such as carpentry, soldiering, or stewarding. At the top are the nobles, according to legend they were originally the children of the Tsar, which perhaps explains the magic that flows through their blood, and their honored place of governance. They have formed great houses that are charged with policing the lands and ensuring production continues. Then there is the Inquisition, the hand of the Tsar, charged with tasks such as hunting down halfbreed children of Skaves and Nobles, keeping the nobility in line, and protecting the Eternal Palace and Ruby City.

You play one of the halfbreed children of a Skave and Noble, hunted by the Tsar, pushed to the outskirts of society and forced to eek out a living through scavenging and thievery. You are all endowed with the magecraft usually only held by nobility, and you have been gathered together from every corner of the Old Empire's three continents to hear a simple proposal: Upend and destroy the Old Empire.

Since time immemorial the Tsar has ruled the thundering lands of Eruvia, but it is time to bring his rule to an end.

Magical Element (Pick one to start with: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Light, Dark): Air

Personality: Cheerful practically around the clock. If there’s darkness in his heart, she keeps it damn well hidden. Always chipper, and always ready to lend a hand to fight for great justice!

Background:

Perhaps one of the rarer cases where a female noble bore a skave’s child, rather than the other way around, Alina was a product of true love. Not between Madame Lucius and her noble husband, heavens no! That bastard got what he deserved: a knife through his heart courtesy of a skave whose sister he had tried to assault. Naturally, the situation was reported as mere murder rather than Sir Lucius being at fault, so the Lucius family didn’t lose much prestige from it. Plus, it gave the perfect excuse for Madame Lucius to bear her Skave lover’s child and pass it off as the last gift from her deceased husband.

Thus, Alina Diarmuid Lucius was born. The child grew up healthy and energetic. Perhaps a bit too energetic. Alina was quite the challenge to control. One day he’d be quietly sitting in his suit, practicing his embroidery, and the next she’d be charging through the gardens, twigs catching on skirt and hair. At supper, her training heels would rest silently while she made small talk to her neighbor, but moments after being dismissed from the table he would brandish a toy sword and claim to be a mighty hero come to fell the wicked bandits. Alina only grew more rambunctious as time went on, leading Madame Lucius to occasionally claim “I’ve gotten more headaches from this child than from all the dreary business meetings I’ve had in my life!”

But just as Alina’s acquaintances felt certain her chaotic nature would never change, his perfect world was rocked vigorously. The Lucius family was famed throughout the land for the vast array of clothes and textiles produced by its artisans and laborers, but one of their greatest markets was found in selling clothes to the more… abnormally shaped races. Those who needed trousers with tail holes, those who were looking for size 7XL, all knew the Lucius family would happily customize their outfits for them when other families would turn them away. Yet this interaction proved to be the Lucius family’s downfall.

When the world learned that the Sullivan family of Faes were harboring a halfblood child, the retaliation was terrible and swift. Anyone who was even remotely connected to the Sullivan family fell under harsh scrutiny, and, well, the Sullivan’s were one of the Lucius family’s best customers. Even with their vast wealth and not insignificant allies, the Lucius family was still dealt a near fatal blow thanks to the suspicion that fell upon them. Fortunately, the Inquisition was slacking on the job when they came to the Lucius family mansion, as none thought to question whether Alina was a halfblood too. Well, the only ones who knew at the time were Alina’s father and mother; everyone else in the household at least believed the lie about Alina being the late lord’s child, not the Madame’s lover’s.

In the aftermath of the fallout, the Lucius family may have still retained their nobility in name, but they were little better than Skave artisans, a far cry from once being known throughout the land. The many designers that had once filled the halls of the Lucius manor with their daring ideas had all been taken in by other fashion families. All that was left was Madame Lucius, Alina, and a few loyal servants. The manor, too, was gone; the family now lived in a home in the Ruby City rather than their great estate in the country. And in this new life, Alina came to an important realization: nobles were only honored until some slight was found against them. Then, they would be no better than peasants.

It was not long after this abrupt change in status that Madame Lucius began to fall ill. Worrying that she might pass on before Alina knew of his parentage, she decided to tell her the truth. This revelation was perhaps even more shocking than the previous one. Not only could this situation have happened to anyone, it was mere moments to happening to Alina’s family as well. Equal parts anger and anguish welled up within Alina, quite the peculiar feeling for her, as he questioned everything about her world. Why did the Sullivans, who had harmed nobody as far as Alina knew, get targeted? What kind of monster would subject their child to the fate of being a halfblood? The questions went on and on, until only one remained. What was so wrong about being a halfblood? The answer wasn’t going to be found in some dreary townhouse, that was for sure. It was time for adventure.

Over the next few years, Alina was in and out of her home, stopping by enough to keep up appearances of being a noble while spending the rest of his time off investigating the world. The nobility may have questioned her actions, but most brushed it off as his former eccentricity having been exacerbated by the sudden decline in status. Few knew what Alina did on these excursions though: search for other halfbloods who were on the run and try to lend them a hand where he could. Sometimes, he was successful. Other times, it took all of Alina’s effort just to escape with her own life.

Finally, though, the suspicion about Alina’s activities grew too great, and the Inquisition launched an investigation right around the time of Alina’s seventeenth birthday. Alina had seen this coming, though, so she was able to flee the area without too much risk to himself. Her mother had passed away a few months before, and the servants were all old enough that none minded retiring to pass the rest of their days with their families. Of course, Alina had no way to guarantee the Inquisition wouldn’t pursue said servants, but it was all he could do for them at this point. With a cheerful laugh and a twinkle in her eye, Alina disappeared into the night, leaving the Inquisition to flounder blindly in his wake.

Over the next year, Alina was much more overt in the actions she took to help halfbloods. Jails were broken into, guard convoys were ambushed, wealthy nobles had their finances… redistributed, and general mayhem manifested. Survivors would always report the same thing: a voice would loudly proclaim ”Greetings, everyone! Its the world’s favorite fashion savvy, justice-loving hero, Alina Diarmuid Lucius, come to save the day!” before emerging to wreak havoc on the scene.

And one day, Alina’s actions were noticed by more than just the Inquisition and the rumor mill. A letter had arrived at one of hideouts he frequented. She opened the letter, and a devilish twinkle filled his eyes. ”A group heist? Sounds like fun!”
