O V E R V I E W

Name: August Jeremy Thompson
Nickname: Auggie, Gus, just about anything will do
Age: 25
Role: Nurse

Appearance: Something about August is strikingly bright. It’s not his face, framed by shaggy wisps of black hair and intelligent deep brown eyes, not his average build, standing at a decent 5’10”, and not even his clothes, casual and focused primarily on utility. It is simply that there is a surprising amount of life in his gaze, a pep in his step and a vigor in his body that sets him apart from the rest of all the war-torn Reapers in his ranks. He is youthful, and it shows, for better or for worse. Though he isn’t a very skilled fighter, his body is still athletic and well-muscled.
He prefers clothing with a lot of pockets, and is somewhat attached to a leather satchel he carries most his supplies in.

PERSONALTIY
Though August has learned people aren’t too keen to hear his optimism, he is guided by hope. Hope that he can do his part, hope that others can work together, and hope that this virus can be beat. Though August may be considered naive for his hopefulness, he’s not stupid. He’s guarded, and thoughtful, but he trusts before he doubts, and that is both a great strength and a terrible weakness. Though August is eager to help those he can, both physically and mentally, he prefers to listen before he leaps. He’s not shy, but he gives pause before opening his mouth, making sure his words are worthwhile and only come after the other person has finished their thought.

Some do wonder if August’s persistent optimism is a facade. If caught in a moment alone, his unshakable hope seems absent, a solemn somberness replacing it. But in the company of others he carries himself well and tries to shine a light on others.

BACKSTORY

Like many, life before Armis was rather simple for August. He was the eldest son to two successful doctors, and they lived a cushy upper middle class life. He and his younger brother Remy were stark opposites even since childhood; August was kind hearted, eager to help, to please, and to learn. Remy was a bit of a wild child, brutish and high energy. Despite their differences the two got along well and were always close despite their very different personalities and life goals. August knew from a young age he wanted to follow his parent’s footsteps in the medical field. He trailed after them in the hospital every chance he could get, breezed through his science classes at school and attended as many STEM summer camps as he could. By the time the world had begun to unravel, August had already completed his undergrad in pre med and nearly finished his graduate studies in medicine. He had a purpose, a goal, and the means to achieve it. Of course, things didn’t go quite as planned.

While August was still in medical school his parents flew to Cuba to attempt to help stop the outbreak. His brother was enlisted in the army at the time as well, leaving August for the most part, alone. He tried to carry on his studies as long as it was feasible for him to do so, but eventually it became clear no doctor had the means to offer a residency with all that was going on. August might not have been a true doctor, but he was well on his way to becoming one, and still holding on to the desire to use his knowledge to help people. Since his brother had been in the Army prior to its rebranding, going straight into Reaper as an executioner, August decided it would be the best use of his talents. As he hangs onto hope that his parents made it out of Cuba and that his brother will return from every mission safe and sound, August has committed himself to offering his every skill to the cause.

SKILLS

Medical Knowledge - Of course, August is on this squad for a reason, and it’s not his brawns. Though he does not have much practical experience, he is extremely knowledgeable and an excellent healer. His brain is a vault of medical knowledge and he quickly knows what needs to be done in order to fix someone, as well as toting a set of incredibly steady, skillful hands. Some may scoff at his age and lack of experience, but August is pretty eager to prove them wrong.
Emotionally Intuitive - Though he’s no psychiatrist, August is always trying to be an open ear. He is sensitive to people’s emotions and usually a pretty good guesser for what they’re feeling. While he would love to blab advice onto every soul willing to listen, he respects those who are reserved and tries not to step on any toes.
Observant - August knows he’s not meant to be on the front lines, so he makes himself useful in other ways. He is always keeping an eye out, for shifts in demeanor, for movement, for anything of value. He wants to use the knowledge Reaper’s equipped him with, and that means catching the signs of the illness before it’s too late. The members of his team may be subject to random, well intending check ups.

WEAKNESSES

Not A Fighter - While he has some basic combat training, most of his experience comes from wrestling with his younger brother, who was almost always able to beat him anyway. August’s combat skills pale in comparison to many of his veteran colleagues and he would probably do more harm than good in a fight.
Trusting - Perhaps not a weakness to some, but it makes him naive and vulnerable in some cases. He wants to help everyone, whether they’re on his side or not. He believes in second chances, almost to a fault, and it makes him easy to take advantage of.
Overly compassionate - While a good soldier knows when to quit or retreat, August has a hard time letting go and giving up on something, especially someone. He is much more controlled by his emotions than most of the people surrounding him, engulfed by an unyielding desire to do everything, even when his everything isn’t enough.

O T H E R

His leather satchel, a gift from his father, is always loaded with medical supplies that he keeps careful watch over, including a rather detailed notebook full of medical logs, and a separate journal that contains detailed thoughts and graphite sketches of findings and surroundings. He prefers to be over prepared rather than under, and aside from medical supplies carries other tools such as matches, a pocket knife, fire starter, and a few other bits and bobs.
