There is no such thing as perfection, everything is grim in one way or another. That is a truth that has existed for centuries, and one every living person must completely recognize at this point. Where there was once carefree attitudes many centuries ago. Instead everything must be met with caution. The fear of war is always a relevant topic, and many men and women go off to join the ranks of the many armies of Mankind.
However Mankind certainly isn't just humans anymore. Mankind now is composed of most bipedal, intelligent creatures. Men with scales for skin standing at the entrances to bars, women with long tails seducing men with a playful brush in passing, and even those that appear like a minotaur violently beating down a rowdy bar patron outside of the business to make an example of him. None of these sights are uncommon, mixed breeding has become more common, while humans are still the majority race, it's beginning to look like overtime, perhaps humans will instead be a minority race, as other populations continue to grow.
Yet government is still almost entirely dominated by humans. Very few species happen to make it very far in the political system. Corruption, racism, and so much more hold them back. Human's have always taken centuries to accept other races fully, and this current generation seems to be no exception as things continue. However there is, one thing that binds various races together, and perhaps only one thing in truth.

There aren't many ways for people to survive anymore. If you're born rich you live a life of joy. Perhaps you're born into a family that owns a business and you get to make a good living. However not many children born have this privilege anymore, overpopulation, and war have left so many without parents. So many without money, or even hope. Instead they turn to a life of crime, a life as a soldier, or perhaps for the dreamers of this generation, the life of an adventurer.
An adventurer is more like a mercenary in these times, compared to someone just exploring for fun. They are usually as well equipped as a soldier, self and or professionally trained, and serve a variety of roles. Some are assassins, some scouts, others heavily specialized soldiers, and so on. Though they do offer their services to everyone, ranging from small villages on the surface of still growing planets, that just need help dealing with an infestation of xenos. Others are hired by rich crime organizations, corrupt politicians, and even rich CEO's to commit some of the most brutal and horrendous crimes ever before slipping away into obscurity for a few years.
The most honorable seem keen to serve various military groups. Living the life of a soldier, without having to fully dedicate every waking hour to it. They serve no one but themselves, and those paying them. They are much like a wandering Samurai of many years past. Simply a sword, or gun for hire, to help turn the tides of war.
Criminals as a whole are very organized. Many low level offenders, if they survive on the streets, are usually picked up by an organized crime group. A Mafia, or a crime family seems to exist for so many different people, it's almost hard to keep track of. Their activities range from drugs, and thievery. Up to murder, human trafficking, slavery, and so much more.
As for Soldiers, they all serve the Empire, the Galaxy, if not Universe spanning empire that belongs to Mankind. They fight battles almost endlessly, trying to claim more planets for the ever growing population of mankind. Their war crimes are largely overlooked by society, as a simple necessity at this point. Horrible, but a requirement.
[Glow=yellow]The Big Players[/glow]
Currently there are several groups in this massive galaxy, that hold a massive sway over the way things work. They range from political groups, large companies, unions, and criminal groups. A handful should be observed, but it should also be understood these aren't the only people out their that can sway the way the Empire works.
The United Empire
Lifeblood, political operations, and so on. This group is the true government of the expanding Empire of Mankind. They are a democracy, ruled by corruption first, and actual desire to protect the people who elected them very last. Enough money can easily buy a politician, or even a few hundred, and get a bill pushed through to benefit those who 'donate'. They pump plenty of money into the military, and every bill they seem to pass only benefits the rich, or criminals. Granted they quiet down any uprisings, by rarely putting a few dollars toward helping out those in less fortunate neighborhoods. Which seem to comprise a majority of their planets.

An exceptionally large criminal organization. The Rising Sun has it's fingers wrapped up in almost every planet that has a population over 500,000 people. The hint here, being that nearly every planet has that many damn people. The organization is ruthless, crooked, and above all powerful. The Rising Sun controls over 50% of the drug trade within almost every city it has a foothold. Anyone opposing them, who refuses to comply, is violently murdered in the streets to make an example. Gambling, whores, clubs, and weapons are also large places where The Rising Sun happens to deal. The group is hard to identify at first glance, so not many ever realize just how many Rising Sun members they could be around at any one moment.

[glow=pink]The League of Science and Magic[/glow]
Despite how uncommon true magic has become, it still exists along science and holds quite a major power. Art forms like Technomancy, Biomancy, and various other sciences mixed with magic have made the practice quite powerful and profitable. The League hosts many different universities, unions, and groups across the galaxy. It's not unlikely to stumble across large universities every few planets, only to find a private organization and library on another. As a general rule, most magic taught mingles with a science in some form. However some people do use just raw magic to conjure up whatever they please. Those who don't belong to the League of Science and Magic, are hunted by Inquisitors, hired from across the universe, to kill renegade mages as they call them.
Servants of the Empire
Servants of the Empire in a plain sense, are simply the military arm of the Empire of Mankind. They cover everything from police, all the way up to special forces. Any gaps in their ranks, are filled by mercenaries, and adventurers throughout the galaxy, to accomplish more specialized tasks. They have show great success in keeping the peace through violence, conquering new worlds, and hold plenty of political sway, as turning their backs on the empire, could surely end millions of lives.
The Structure is quite simply really. It is divided into five branches of service. Police and Law Enforcement, just dedicated troops on the ground meant to enforce laws, they are highly corrupted on most planets. Army, disciplined grunts, without much complaint for what they do they aren't the best equipped, however they get the job done by sheer numbers. Navy, they pilot massive space ships, and are responsible for supply runs, orbital drops, and so much more. Air force, highly skilled pilots responsible for air-to-air combat, and bombing missions. Inquisition, a branch employed by the government of the Empire for secret measures, they fair from humble assassins, to armor clad extermination squads, their purpose is mostly unknown. Finally the Special Forces branch, which serves as a strike force, used to accomplish highly specialized tasks.
Shadows
A private Mercenary Organization, dedicated to hiring the most deadly individuals it can find. Most of these people are easily noted as wearing black suits, and usually a mask of some form. They serve nearly every organization in the galaxy in some form or another. Killing off a few Mafia soldiers here and there, slaughtering a couple of politicians that are stopping a bill from passing, and so on. The group is purely for assassination and destruction. They are always someone to look over your shoulder for. However they have morals and principles which they follow. Many members of the Shadow, tend to leave after a decade or less of service to live a happier life.

The Adventurer's guild isn't a terribly well funded organization, however it comprises a spiderweb network across the galaxy. Including independent mercenaries, mages (League certified, and Renegade), scientists, explorers, and just about everything else. As a general rule, if you need someone for a job, putting a letter out through the Adventurer's guild, can usually get you several replies within an hour of people that possess the necessary skills. This group lives by a code of honor, a quite simple one. Don't lie to those who hire you, and don't cheat anyone. Breaking either of this rules, will usually end up in being tailed by a Shadow, or simply shot on the spot by another member of the Guild.
The Species of the Galaxy
A variety of species populate the galaxy now. It would take hours, perhaps even days to explain them all. However there are general categories that each species tends to fall into, making it a bit easier with a passing glance to make sense of someone.
Humans
The longest lived of all the races in the Empire of Mankind, they are the most abundant, and most diverse of all the species. Ranging from rich politicians and CEO's, all the way down to the homeless. Their personalities can be hard to gauge, some are vicious racists that would beat a member of another race just for looking different. Others are activists, fighting alongside other races to try and secure greater rights. They tend to be the least affected by racism, as they hold the biggest footprint in the galaxy currently.
Half-Breeds
A widely welcomed species are half-breeds. Their origins aren't entirely known, however many argue they are the children of war. Typically spawned from rape, or simple human desire for one last touch in the face of death. Some even argue some of the richest individuals either genetically breed these in labs, or perhaps had an encounter with an alien slave, that lead to some of the more widespread collection of these. However today the most largely accepted view is, that from growing relationships between humans and other races have brought out loving relationships, which in turn eventually lead to enough half-breeds running around, they're more like their own species now.
Generally they are treated well by most humans, and other races at this point. However they are consistently the targets of Human Trafficking rings. Their additional 'features', such as ears, a tail, and even the ability to mimic animal noises, had made them quite desirable to very rich individuals, that desire a different type of pet. Half-breeds is a broad term, that holds any human, with additional features such as animal ears and a tail falls into the category. They must appear a majority human however, to count. If they appear too much like an animal, they fall into the next category.
Beastmen
Generally the most poorly regarded of all the species. Beastmen are the closest thing to an animal, that walks on two legs. Their entire body is usually covered in fur, or scales. Their skull holds an animal like shape. Some still possess animal like legs, but most at this point have a more human body. The one benefit of being a Beastmen, happens to be the incredibly heightened senses, and strength it brings. A wolf for example can run faster than a human, and usually is physically stronger than the average man. A rabbit may be able to jump at heights deemed unbelievable, and so on.
The General public views them on a neutral ground. Some welcome them others, shun them away. The criminal underworld adores them, for their almost inhuman abilities. Rich politicians tend to hate them, viewing them as a growing threat to their power. As a whole, it can be rather hard for most Beastmen to understand how other species might react to them.

The Guardians are not a widely understood race, nor are they a very common race. Their purpose in life seems one of mystery. Some seek a life of war, other's a life of crime, and some simply serve as wandering protectors of those that need it.
They seem faceless, covered by a suit of heavy armor, appearing at a minimum 8'0 tall, and at a maximum 8'9 in height. Their voices are always deep, aggressive, and harsh. They seem to become bound to people overtime, an endless guardian angel. Their lifespan seems eternal even, some argue they have seen the same Guardian, for centuries, on different battlefields. Some crime families claim that their Guardian has existed since the first boss.
As a whole they are hard to understand, but most assume their purpose is simple to wander, and learn. Before disappearing, to reproduce, or never leave their hidden home world ever again. They carry massive weapons, ranging from massive hydraulic fists, to cannons capable of knocking a plane out of the sky, or punching open a tank. Their armor seems capable of stopping most harm, and that which it doesn't seems easily absorbed by the guardian.
But Where Do We All Fit Into This?
While not an entirely simple answer, the best explanation I can give is this. This roleplay, if it finds enough interest, is intended to represent a semi-sandbox style roleplay. There will be a story I will develop based around the characters presented, however I leave much of the decision up to my fellow writers to create the scenes they wish to.
I would like everyone to play as an Adventurer, putting you purely as an independent character, free of a very strict organizational tie. However I don't want to place any restrictions on character pasts and back stories. Perhaps your character is quite an infamous Rising Sun Lieutenant, who after upsetting a few other powerful gang members, disappeared into obscurity. Or instead you're but a simple soldier, who couldn't fully leave a life of violence behind, and signed on as a mercenary. Whatever the case, I'd love to see fleshed out bios, well written stories and incredibly unique characters.
Expect plenty of anime, sci-fi, and even fantasy elements to rear their head within this roleplay. I want to keep moments tense, and also incredibly unique. City streets are packed with hundreds of different races. Obscure, natural planets filled with magnificent beasts. And untouched ruins crawling with horrors behind imagination. The story of this roleplay will be pushed forward by myself as a Game Master of sorts. So try not to fret too much about stagnation, I'll do my best to stop that from happening.
If enough interest is shown, I'll create a sign up thread within a few days, to help give a better idea of everything. What I've presented here is quite simply just a very, very broad overview of the universe which I'm trying to create. So once I have the chance, I'll sit down and really expand on every little detail which players are curious about. However for the time being, I'm simply just trying to put this down, so I don't forget it all.
