Grim Odyssey: Live/Die/I

Even if it didn't change that he'd see these three dead, Luhki nonetheless couldn't help but respect the three goblins. Even weakened by the severe malnourishment they still moved very well, and now they had shown just the strength of their bonds. He hesitated briefly at what he saw between the goblins, but resolved himself as he felt a hand tighten around the blade of Laventin with desperate strength. Aye, these monsters were quite possibly as intelligent as any of them five. Their bonds were probably stronger. They might have sought humanity's death and downfall, but these creatures were not mindless in their drive.

To survive, he would still have to cut each of them down though, and so that's what he intended to do. The blade refused to so much as budge despite the clear difference in strength, and he quickly gave up that contest for a simple kick to dislodge the goblin. Yet somehow, despite the goblin being impaled on his blade and dragged forward to meet the sole of his boot, Luhki still managed to miss the damn thing. These goblins might have been more than mere beasts, but damn they could still go fuck themselves.

With both goblins quite intent on holding his attention, Luhki couldn't quite spare a glance back at the rest of his group. It did sound like they had turned their attentions to the goblin that had escaped with his bandolier, and so he left them to deal with that problem. Tokie was already at his side, and seemed quite alright despite her earlier stumble. While the two didn't seem too problematic for now, it'd probably take too long for her to try and chase down the other.

While Bastiel too wanted to go after the Goblin that escaped with the Imperial's vials, she decided that making the three on two fight a three on three fight may be a better option. So moving forward, still keeping her Shield on Lukhi and her Protection spell maintained over the party, she brandishes her Mace and Shield, holding her shield close and at the ready to attempt to block any goblin blades. She moved forward, her boots treading the dirt floor of the arena with both caution and speed.

After all, only a fool rushes ahead. She wanted to get close to help sure, but she wasn't just going to rush ahead like a fool and be impaled upon a Goblin Blade in the process. Once she was near Tokudome she would ready her shield and mace in case any of these creatures got close to her to attack or perhaps got in striking distance. After all, while she wanted to end these beast's lives, so they could survive, she knew that efficiency should take priority over speed in this situation.

Plus she knew that from where she was standing, Siyu would still be within her magical Protection, so this was an optimal position to hold for the moment since if any Goblins tried to move towards or past her from where Lukhi is then she could still swing at them.

Finally some progress. Tokudome gave a quick exhale of satisfaction and regained her composure. The prick in her foot was just that; a mere pin prick. She could easily walk it off. The two shields on Luhki held firm still, and so Tokudome still had some moments to keep on the offensive. Not one to get discouraged, she saw the opportunity in Luhki's grievous blow to the goblin and went in for another sweep at the wounded creature with her halberd, this time taking care not to step on anything out of the ordinary. With a cry, she brought the polearm over her head and outwards in a neck-level (for a goblin, anyways) swing to behead the already debilitated opponent.

Despite the goblin's speed, Eizl was still able to catch up to it, getting in front with her Beam Arm at the ready. Snarling viciously, the beast faked left, before dashing to the right, but the dark-skinned girl saw throw its feint. A powerful blow to its stomach sent it reeling, but it continued on, pushing past her and barely managing to get out of range of her swings. Now close to the Gate, the goblin pulled at the vials attached to the bandolier, yanking them out, but in its rush, fumbled with the glass tubes. Three of them fell down beside it, a Lightning vial and two Amplifying vials.

On the other side of the Arena, Tokudome's halberd struck home, biting into the tough flesh of the goblin. It howled in pain, blood spraying out as the priestess tore out the heavy blade. Releasing its grip on Lukhi's sword, it began to stagger away, trying to escape from the cold steel. Sensing the opportunity, the Imperial lashed out, only to stop mid-swing as he pranced away from the vicious ankle-slicing cuts of the dual-wielding goblin. It turned to its friend, then back to its foes, and bared its teeth, crossing its two short swords in a defensive stance.

Weakened as they were, the goblins still had not yet given up. If they weren't going to win, they were at least going to take down one of those filthy pale-skinned apes.

Siyu clenched his fist in relief as Eizl managed to smack the goblin back a little bit.
"N-Nice hit!" It was mighty courageous of her to rush right up to it; he should've done the same.

Hearing a war cry and a menacing slash behind him, Siyu didn't spared a glance to look to the two goblins behind him in the distance, and presumed them soon-to-be-dead. As cheery and happy as Tokudome seemed, by the fierceness of her cry and the neck-aim of her slash, it appeared she could have just as much of a wrath as anybody else when it came to it. The goblins likely deserved it, but it still shocked Siyu's gentle mind somewhat.

Drawing a needle and coating it with Soporfic Fluid, Siyu's eyes glinted with determination as he aimed his throw. He wasn't going to let the opportunity Eizl had presented got to waste. Inhaling a short but powerful breath, followed by a grunt, Siyu chucked the needle through the air. It wasn't a superb throw, but due to the goblin scuffing his dodge, the needle hit home.

He'd managed to hit that throw by luck, but Siyu now understood why he was doing all of his throws wrong. The pressure of not failing everyone was getting to him. The pressure of being watched was getting to him. He was so desperate to prove something here - to prove that all of his training hadn't gone to waste - to prove that he could be useful outside of just sewing together wounds. He needed to let himself go, and calm his mind, like his mentor told him. 'The Zheihand helps reinforce the flow of battle, but they cannot control it.'

Hopefully the soporfic had entered its system to slow it down, but the goblin didn't show any signs of stopping. It looked like it was going to get to that gate, unless it abruptly laid down and died from injuries. Siyu closed his eyes with a quiet sigh, before moving forward to join Eizl. Pulling out his hand axe, Siyu wiped his forehead, preparing for the worst if it ever came.
"If the pain of your legs is getting to you, I can give you another shot of Stimulant if you wish," Siyu quickly informed. "But... hah... you fight as if those wounds aren't even there. Regardless, I'll try and keep them off you if anything else comes. I'm no priest or protector, but... I... I think I can at least stall for time, even with this not-so-trusty axe."

He would have complimented Tokudome's strike, but Luhki focused on the opportunity she opened for him instead. Wrenched free of the goblin's grip, he prepared to bring it back down once again, but retreated when the goblins ally stepped in with a pair of swords wielded. "Damn…" he muttered as he found himself closer to Bastiel and Tokudome.

"Bastiel. Go help the others." With one goblin too injured to fight effectively, the other seemed set to protect its comrade. Quite admirable, but even with that thought Luhki still closed the distance and tried to cut the goblin down. It might take a bit longer without Bastiel, but the situation here seemed far more tenable than what Eizl and Siyu had on their hands.

Of course the goblin managed to avoid his strike just moments after he had that thought. With a scowl Luhki brought his weapon up and prepared to receive the goblin's attacks.

That... turned out better than Eizl had hoped for, she was by no means a close-range combat expert but whatever the goblin tried was rather obvious. Of course, despite knowing she couldn't hope for too much the girl would have much welcomed it if the Goblin was taken out with that simple strike. Checking on her cannon to silently confirm that it was still not ready yet it was all too obvious that she simply had to keep him engaged. Overall, despite hitting the goblin the young Alchemist wasn't too happy with the outcome - if only she had hit him earlier with her ranged attack.

About to close the little bit of distance the goblin put forth again, the needle thrower seemed to actually follow her example as he finally came closer, not without reminding her about Eizl's wound though. "Tzch..." Eizl couldn't deny she had more-or-less pushed the thoughts about her leg out of her mind - victory was all that counted. But now, that her focused shifted a bit, it actually did hurt a damn lot, not to mention the slight feeling of dizzines she felt from the blood loss.

"It hurts..." She murmured for a second before closing her eyes just to open them a moment later - her eyes filled with newfound willpower. "No." She now told Siyu and herself in a steadfast tone. This wasn't the time to cry about such a wounds. She had to survive, no matter the cost. The second gate wasn't allowed to be opened under any circumstances. "Don't worry about me." She made a few steps forward, pushing any needless thoughts out of her mind. "We have to make sure this creature won't blow up the gate. That's all that counts. That's all that matters." WIth that, Eizl was close enough to lift her Beam Arm once more before letting it hammer down onto the Goblin who, of course, dodged the incoming attack now easily.

While Bastiel did indeed think of going to help the others, the fact is that three opponents on one enemy didn't seem really all that practical. Of course, the Goblin blowing up the gate wouldn't be good for them either, especially since it apparently was trying to do just that. If that gate was destroyed or opened by that Goblin, whatever sort of other creatures behind the gate would get in and spell doom for the party. "Alright, but be careful." These were her words to Lukhi before she turned around and began to move.

Of course, she made sure to keep her Shield on Lukhi for now, since he could still use the extra protection. While she didn't want to move to a place where her Protection Spell would have no affect on anyone, she figured the sooner she could get in and attack the better, so she was now in the middle of the arena with her full on sprint, shield and mace held close to her body in order to make sprinting go a bit faster.

Finally the goblins were the ones truly on the defensive. With one heavily injured and another soon to be mobbed by three of them, but a single goblin left gave its last will to stand against them. Now, more than ever, there was little reason to be cautious and bolster their defenses. Tokudome and Bastiel made for an incredible combination, though in the back of her mind she thought it might have been better if they had an outright medic to aid them.

Though tenacious, against multiple opponents the blocking goblin couldn't hope to keep up forever. Tokudome charged in once again for an overhead strike, hoping to be fast enough to drop the guillotine or strong enough to break its two-bladed guard.

Both their advantages in numbers and their advantages in gear was soon overcoming the teamwork and camaraderie of the three goblins. With Bastiel's constant reposition to give everyone the protective benefits of her Bastion, there were no openings that the goblins could exploit, and with each needle throw, Siyu was becoming more and more accustomed to the movement patterns of the agile beasts. Tokudome's martial prowess was as impressive as ever, scoring her yet another painful strike onto the dual-wielding goblin. A bloody line appeared over its chest, a good, but superficial strike, as her halberd tore through its thick hide. Eizl had rose to the occasion as well, keeping the Goblin with Lukhi's bandolier occupied with each cannon swing, while the Imperial himself was beginning to realize that his true skills may lie in counterattacking, instead of initiating attacks.

The situation was growing more and more dire for the goblins. Something needed to be done.

Pressured constantly by the barrage of swings from Lukhi and Tokudome, the dual-wielding beast rushed forwards, targeting the polearm-user. If it could close the distance, it would be at a much more advantageous position for dodging the Priestess's attacks. As it rushed in, however, the sand suddenly sunk beneath its clawed feet, providing Lukhi a golden chance. Chasing after the goblin, he swung downwards viciously, Laventin biting into the monster's shoulder. It cried out in pain, dropping one of the short swords before swiping at Lukhi, who simply backstepped out of range.

In that moment, the most greviously wounded Goblin rushed in. It was a small opening, but within the shadow of its friend and protector, it evaded Lukhi's attention and dove at Tokudome. Ducking below the Priestess's intercepting stroke, it leapt upwards, claws and fangs extended to tear out her throat, only to be slammed down into the ground with her offhand.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the arena, the bandolier-wearing goblin extract three vials from its hand, beady eyes narrowing on Eizl's heavy bludgeoning weapon. Dancing on one foot to the other, it faked left, darted right, but finally slipped inbetween her legs before her Beam Arm could come down on it. With a victorious roar, it tossed the three vials onto the Gate.

As those vials flew through the air, Eizl could identify them: two Amplifying Vials and a Fire Vial.

The contents splattered against the wall, and suddenly, a blistering flash of heat erupted, flames spewing violently as the gate creaked from the initial impact of the explosion. The monstrous cries from behind the gate grew stronger, and yet, the gate still held. The goblin shouted out victoriously, certain that aid would arrive soon.

But for now, it had to bring out more fuel, more firepower, to take down the Gate.

When Eizl dismissed her pain and assured Siyu she was fine, the Zheihand thought for a moment, before giving a short nod.
"You're right, the gate's what's important. S-Sorry for distracting you; let's do what we can." He added. She wasn't a delicate back-line girl that cracked under pressure; her will was just as tough as a warrior's. Their backline had become their frontline now. And if that gate went, they'd have to keep it. But suddenly, the goblin looked like it was about to get to the gate after all.

"...Oh, crap. No no no, don't-" Siyu mumbled worriedly as the goblin managed to slip past and chuck some vials. The relaxant must've failed to enter its system, as it was still zipping around the battlefield, injuries or not. Siyu could do little but fumble the grip on his axe as he watched in awe as the gate went up in intense flames. It wouldn't be long before there'd be more trouble.

Was there still time? If they killed all the goblins now, would the practice instantly be called to a halt and they wouldn't need to worry about the gate? Either way, they needed to clear out all the goblins before the reinforcements arrived. That way, there still might be a hope for fighting whatever was on the other side.

Whilst the goblin was wooping and cheering like a prick, Siyu frowned, snatching a needle from his side.
"C-Cur... don't think you've won yet." He muttered under his breath. "That gate'll take a while to go down, and you won't be alive to try and speed up the process..."

His eyes flashing, Siyu prepared to hurl a needle. Though, he seemed much less rushed, and dramatically more calm whilst doing it. He emptied his mind of his thoughts, took a sharp intake of air, before hurling the needle with precise fingerwork. With this throw, the needle flew like a slow-moving bullet. Accurate, graceful; yet dangerous as it gave a delicate, birdlike-hum through the air. Clearing his mind seemed to have done wonders, as he was applying correct technique. This, was his first proper throw on the true battlefield.

The goblin's attempted dodge was just as skillful and quick as the throw, but the needle was just too fast to get out of the way from. The needle sinking into the goblin's flesh without sound, Siyu's confidence seemed slightly restored, though he still kept the half-anxious, half-calm look he always seemed to carry with him.

"God damnit!" Eizl cursed out loud as her blow was yet evaded again. How many times did it made? Three out of four? This was horrible. She was horrible. Eizl wasn't expecting to go close-range in the first place but she had definitely made some mental notes about critical improvements about her Beam Arm already. Despite Siyu's attack connecting, things only got worse as the Goblin actually had a try to blow up the gate. Luckily for her sanity however, it withstood the pressure of the attack - for now.

This, on the other hand, gave the girl another chance. While it was, in retrospect, obvious that the gate wouldn't just go down from one simple explosion considering that it was supposed to hold, it sure didn't look like it would hold out too much longer. Eizl didn't know how much more time they had with this menace, but she'd rather not take any chances. "This time, I'll make sure to hit..." Reassuring herself that her Beam Arm was, indeed, operational again, she quickly threw in one, no, two vials followed by a lightning one. If she would do this now, she had to make it right.

With an annoyed look on her face she aimed the cannon towards the goblin, still being in close range, before finally pulling the trigger to make a lightning beam shot out in contrast to the two fiery fire attacks from earlier. Maybe it was the lack of attention the Goblin paid to her as he disappointingly saw the gate withstanding, or maybe it was Siyu's needles paralyzing his muscles or maybe it was Eizl simply doing her job for once. Sure, the Goblin tried to dodge nonetheless as soon as he realized what Eizl was doing, but having already seen his pattern twice and having hit him once, the girl didn't have much trouble adjusting as the roaring lightning cracks crashed into the goblin's body without mercy, roasting him alive as he turned into a pathetic batch of burnt flesh. It was clearly an overkill as Eizl had a smirk on her face upon finally taking first blood.

Of course, even with a hit, things didn't want to go too smooth yet again as, most likely triggered by her elemental force, the vials the goblin still carried with him got triggered by Eizl's attack. While he suddenly turned into a block of ice just to be smashed into tiny little pieces by the following explosion later didn't do any harm towards the gate, Eizl was very well aware of who those vial's belonged too.

Bastiel was feeling a little useless at the moment. Sure she was doing her job as a Fortress, which is to utilize her magic to protect the party, but she felt like she wasn't doing such a... excellent job at that either. Still, she was succeeding in some areas, and definitely taking mental notes on how she needed to improve her Bastion and try to expand the range of her magic, since all of this moving around was getting a little tiring. Regardless, the gate was still holding out at the moment, despite the two explosions it took. That is definitely a plus in the moment. After all, if those gates had opened, then they all would be in big trouble.

So instead of rushing forward once again, Bastiel now turned back around. Even if she felt like she wasn't doing much, there was no time to lament, curse, and feel sorry for herself because of that. There would be plenty of time for contemplation on self improvement after the battle had concluded. For now, they had one goal. Get rid of these Goblins and hope that the Trial would be over after that. After all, Bastiel could already tell that their group wasn't exactly full of pros. No.

Like herself, they were all amateurs, and anymore fighting after these Goblins could only bring impending doom. So she began to quickly rush back towards the Priestess and Imperial, bringing with her the boon of her Protection Spell for the both of them while having kept her Shield Spell on the Imperial still this entire time. They still had a battle to finish, and all be dammed that she would die here to some weak, malnourished goblins.

The explosive rumble that came from behind Luhki was more than enough for him to grimace as he easily recognized the sound. Snarling as the heat from the blast hit his back, he funneled his frustration against the goblin that still remained on its feet in front of him. They were definitely tenacious and cunning bastards. One arm was unusable as it hung uselessly at the creature's side and even the guard it put up seemed quite weak as sweat beaded on its forehead and its eyelids struggled to stay open. He dropped Vysa back to his hip and grasped Laventin with both hands as he prepared for one last strike against the creature.

Course a familiar crackle of rapidly forming ice and yet another explosive detonation distracted him briefly, and Luhki felt a vein bulge as he fought the urge to whip his head around and look at the situation. A slight slide of his foot forward and he brought his blade down against the goblin, aiming for its head. Sparks flew before the goblin's arm gave out and though he did not take the creature's head, Laventin carved an ear and chunk of its shoulder free. Disregarding the fresh scream of pain from the practically disabled goblin, he gave a quick survey of the battlefield.

Keen eyes found a few scattered vials on the sand across the arena, but it seemed everything else he owned had been destroyed in a blast Eizl caused. The goblin responsible though… he only saw bits and portions here and there. As for the last goblin, it seemed to be on its last legs as well and Bastiel was on her way back to assist Tokudome with the creature. As for the gate? It was singed, but its structural integrity did not seem to be in danger just yet. The battle seemed about to conclude, as ugly as it had been, but who knew what the Guild had planned for them...

The two remaining goblins, grievously injured as they were, could only watch as their one hope was crushed by Eizl's lightning beam. The hopelessness set in, and the blood began to flow. Before Tokudome could go and execute them, the two remaining goblins bled out, falling over as still as corpses. Despite initial difficulties, the newly formed group had successfully slain the three goblins with minimal injury on their side. Only Eizl was noticeably injured, the two cuts on her legs still oozing out blood, but the adrenaline coursing through her veins made such things a minor concern.

They had won. They had passed.

But there was no applause. No praise. The hot sun beat down on the sands as it always had, and, outside of the blood and fire and ice and naked goblins strewn on the arena, there was no real change. The gate behind them did not open, while the gate before them continued to burn, creaking slightly. The warmth was beginning to feel oppressive at this point, and yet, they were still stuck in the arena, the stone walls three meters tall.

What were they to do next?

Siyu was speechless as he watched the goblin in front of him meet his demise. Burnt to chunks, exploded to smaller chunks, and then the chunks had been frozen and broken again leaving almost no signs of the goblin that had carried the vials other than a few scraps of flesh, and a few specks of frozen pieces of organs and brain matter. The death was quick and painful for the goblin. He knew Eizl hadn't meant for the death to be so brutal, but overkill was certainly the right word for it.
"Wow... erm..." Siyu struggled to talk for a moment. "...Nice... shot?"

As the remaining goblins fell down to their blood-soaked graves, the adrenaline in Siyu died down as he glanced about, waiting for something else to happen. When absolutely nothing happened after a good five seconds, Siyu double checked to make sure the greenskins weren't breathing. No... they were certainly dead. Especially the one Eizl had killed; that one couldn't be more dead. Literally nothing was happening.

The big question was: what now? They hadn't been told if they'd passed, failed, or been told frankly to get the hell out of here. Either this was some sort of test of independence or patience. Were they supposed to just get out of here themselves? Was something wrong? Or had the instructors just walked off, because they frankly didn't give a shit about this batch?

Whatever the case, Siyu hurriedly pulled out his medical kit, approaching Eizl.
"Er... I, I'm not sure if we have the time to fully fix your leg injuries, so I'm just going to bandage them for now before you pass out." He mumbled. "This heat makes the bleeding a lot more dangerous. So, uhm... stand still, if that's alright." With that, Siyu crouched over, carefully yet hastily first washing the wound with some of the water from his canteen, then wrapping a tight bandage around both of Eizl's leg wounds. It was a hasty job that would merely stop the bleeding and no more, but it'd do for now.

Getting back to his feet when that was over with, Siyu regrouped with the others, scratching the back of his head.
"...We did it, I suppose. Though... now I'm starting to question if we actually have done it." He said idly. "Erm... firstly, did anybody else suffer a cutting or piercing injury? I need to fix any of those as soon as possible. And secondly, do you think we're supposed to see ourselves out? The walls aren't exactly high, so... maybe we have to wait for that gate to burn down."

Luhki paused in his examination of the arena to look at Siyu before he glanced at the scratch on his ankle. If it had been inflicted by one of the goblin's rusty blades or his own after it was stained by their blade, it might have been worth troubling the other male over it, but for now he dismissed it as unimportant. "No injuries here," he reported before he continued to wander around the arena. The heat forced him to stay a bit away from the gate, but the monsters had only quieted rather than stop completely.

"There's still who knows how many creatures behind that gate." Like Siyu had pointed out though, the walls weren't very high at all. He looked towards the others and then gestured to the stands above. "Don't think there's a way out down here, and I don't want to be on the sands if that gate burns down." He sheathed Laventin, cracked his knuckles, and ran towards the wall. The sand made for shitty footing, but he still managed a good enough jump to grab the wall's edge. His feet barely found any purchase on the smooth stone walls, but it was enough to let him almost completely clear the wall in a single motion.

"Right," Luhki muttered before he took a deep breath and fell back down to the sandy arena floor. Now that he knew he could get over by himself without any assistance, it was time to get the less physically inclined members over. Siyu seemed nimble enough to do without his help, but the same couldn't be said about the other three; especially considering Eizl still had two wounds to her legs. Dusting his hands off, he turned to face the others and got into position to help boost some people over the wall. "Let's get to it, unless anyone's got a better idea?"

TP at start of the round: 3

Phew.... they did it... somehow. Even so, for Eizl this did not feel like a victory at all, considering how much trouble they had with just three of them and the stories she heard her father tell, there was no way they would survive out there for too long. With the supposed-to-be victory however her mind and body finally started to loosen up as well, quickly reminding her of the pain she had to endure the entire time. Stumbling backwards the girl nearly fell down as Siyu spoke to her, clearly giving praise to the unintended massacre she had more or less done to the single goblin before quickly getting to work on her injuries.

Being a good and obedient patient, Eizl was simply as quiet as possible, only giving him another "Thank you." As the doctor finished his work. Collecting the few vials the obliterated goblin dropped earlier the girl also made her way towards the group. "..." Eizl opened her mouth, but decided to say anything for now considering they were still not out of harms way. Whatever important the Alchemist had to say could also wait for later.

Instead, she followed Luhki's example trying to climb the wall, though, quickly realized there was no way she would be able to do it by herself. Instead, she stated the obvious without beating around the bush. "I need help."

It was over, but nothing was changing. No guild officials coming out to tell them congratulations for passing, no opening of gates to free them from this arena. No, they were stuck in here truly on their own. This was a battlefield after all. There's no celebration or thanks until everyone has left it and gone home, since the danger of death is always around. It is why Bastiel, while not in a fighting stance, is still holding her weapons somewhat ready, in case anymore monsters or other such enemies showed up.

"So far nothing. But still, one can never be too careful."

She knew that she needed to get stronger. This battle taught her that. Her spells were limited by range and weren't too powerful. She needed to change that, and this battle definitely gave her an idea or two of how she could begin improving herself. Of course, one thing she knew was to never think of home when out in the field, as it is always an ill omen that raises a death flag. So with a shake of her head she banishes such homeward thoughts and focuses now upon the situation at hand.

Escaping the arena.

The others were already working on a solution, that being climbing over the three meter high walls. Seeing that the wounded Eizi needed help, Bastiel figured she could offer it. She wasn't some flimsy mage, she was a bastion. She needed to have physical strength so she could swing about her mace, hold her shield, and forge forward in her armor. It wasn't super heavy, but it was by no means light either.

Walking over to the wall, she would begin to climb up herself, and once situated atop she would hold a hand out. "Lukhi, boost Eizi up and I will pull her up here." A simple bit of teamwork. Necessary for survival is good communication skills with her teammates. Bastiel speaks methodically and lightly. It may seem 'apathetic', but its more or less she just prefers to say what she needs to say as efficiently and to the point as possible, at least when it comes to scenarios where they needed to work together to get past some obstacle.

As again... communication is a key ability needed for survival.
