Some time ago, Alucard would have pushed the woman away. He desired no contact with humans, although he did not particularly like them, he did not want to interfere with their lives. He looked at them afar, making sure demons and vampires of his kind did not wander into their territory and massacre the weaker race. They were selfish creatures, but yes, their lives were hard and difficult as is - there was no point in making them suffer. However, that did not mean that he did not harbor some sort of distaste for them, they were lower than vampires, as he had been taught by Dracula. And his father always tried to get the human side of him out of Alucard, and the lord vampire and Death always spoke about it.
That was what he grew up thinking and believing, that humans were weak and unwanted.

That was also why he tossed aside human emotions, to a prince of vampires, they were unneeded.

vBtL8ul.png

But right now these emotions he was feeling were so overwhelming, the dhampir simply didn't know what to do. All he knew was that he was angry, and sad, and maybe even frightened. They tore at his insides and at his heart, emotions he had put aside a long, long time ago suddenly felt so foreign in his body. They rampaged, but Hakuei's touch they seemed to freeze for just a moment as the dhampir suddenly stiffened as if he was a statue, unused to human touch.
Blushu.png

They were way too close, too close for Alucard's comfort. He tried to tear himself away, but the look in Hakuei's eyes stopped him. They were deep and soft, looking back at him as beads of sweat rolled down her face. She looked tired, out of breath, or maybe relieved - the dhampir couldn't tell. He really could see genuine care and kindness in them, which surprised him, as they had not been allies for that long. Even when he had been accused of being one of the traitors, she always stood by him and trusted him - even if she might not have been 100% sure he was innocent.
R4o9fEe.png

Something about her reminded him terribly of his mother, of when he was small and she comforted him when he ran from the throne room, scared of the monster that was his father, or the demons that lurked the halls. In the castle of chaos, she was his sole light. And here in this foreign world, Hakuei was that light.
But...
"Hakuei. I have seen creatures just like that in many prophecies. I have envisioned my own world being vanquished by monsters far more ferocious than this Diablo. Even if this world is not mine, I feel the need to slay it."
zC4GkYM.jpg

She could see that cold and terrible resolve in Alucard's eyes begin to shatter just a little, and that relieved Hakuei far more than he would ever know. The princess wasn't even aware of what she was exactly doing. Had she ever held a man like this outside of comforting her little brother, or reassuring her closest confidante? It just felt... Appropriate, to tuck the dhampir close to her. He already made a place for himself in her heart, though how large it was, no one yet knew.

The heart has an infinite capacity for love if you let it.

For just a moment she could see past the many-times torn down and broken walls that the dhampir had erected to protect himself, into the kindhearted yet so-often hurt man inside.

Smiling softly, she closed her eyes and slowly settled her arms around his shoulders. The movement was ever so gentle, as if she was touching something that could easily break, the care she showed Alucard heartachingly reminding her of her past interactions with her family.

"This is fighting. I have conquered a tribe of hardened warriors with almost no violence, and a wise woman once said - Fight on in your hearts, fight to survive and to carry through your ideals. Don't let yourself be defeated by despair."

Shaman Chagan certainly taught me that you can fight on without violence.

She chuckled softly against his cheek. Quick as a flash, and as soft as a butterfly's wing, Hakuei briefly pressed her lips to his skin.

"Of course, those weren't the exact words. But we are waging battle in our hearts like this, Alucard. And that is the way to weaken a being such as this Diablo, who feeds off of our pain and our despair. Let me show you how much I am capable of giving love to the people who need it. You are worthy of being loved, Alucard..."

"H-hnng..."
Setsuna made no move to resist as Schala helped her to what could hardly be called 'safety', but was still safer than being right on the front line attacking Diablo. The Angel even struggled, doing her best to contribute some movement on her own, despite repeatedly nearly crumpling to the ground again. Which, she did, when they were out of the way, with a small thud and a pained expression, shaking slightly in the pile she was in. With a cringe, she weakly lifted her head to look to Schala, struggling not to tremble as she did so. "P-please... Help me...!" she pleaded, despite her previous seeming lack of care what happened to her. Tears faintly welled in her eyes as she gazed at the other female pleadingly before she heard a familiar voice, just about when Schala began an attempt to heal her.
Heal yourself. That's gonna be your priority number one, got it?
How peculiar. How could her heath be priority? In her mind, everyone but her own was, which was precisely why she was pleading so desperately for assistance from Schala. She needed to, at the very least, replenish enough Eternal Mana to stand and run. That way, even if she could not beat the monster, she could defend the others. ...Ah. Perhaps this was why Shirou wished for her to heal, as well. Regardless, Schala's spells seemed to do little, quite possibly due to Setsuna's biological makeup. Something possibly borderline machine and surpassing superhuman- godly being a better word. Regardless, renowned horror wracked her as blue-green eyes caught sight of Diablo attempting an attack on Shirou. Unwittingly, painfully, she reached out and called out.
rsz_kyoshiro_ep08_20_by_teh_zombish-dat7khd.jpg

"S-Shirou...! L-look out...!"
...only to cringe and squeeze her eyes shut, still desperately struggling. So, once again, she pleaded. "...Please, I need to help. I need your help... Please..."

Though for the most part, Schala had successfully kept her feelings of aggression, and fear, at bay... Setsuna's cries quickly caused her to open her eyes, as she looked around, centering on the source of her voice.

It didn't take long to spot her still injured form, laying on the ground; much to her surprise, her cure spell had done little to help Setsuna at all. While its properties could mend both man and machine when they were damaged, it was possible that some sort of property she had was able to counteract its effects.

She was unsure of what else she could do to help, but even so, Schala headed towards Setsuna nonetheless, gently wrapping her hands as delicately as she could around her body, in an effort to try and lift her. Perhaps she reasoned that if she could somehow unite Setsuna with Shirou again, everything would be better... Or something along those lines.

However, as she did so, trying to move as slowly as she could, as not to hurt Setsuna anymore than she already was, it was noted that Schala's face was hovering rather close to Setsuna, perhaps even close enough for a kiss, as strange as that sounded.

As the group seemed to interpret his words as a means to defeat him through alternative, unconventional means, the devil known as Diablo could only chuckle in amusement. In his eyes, they may as well have surrendered and presented themselves to him right on a silver platter. Such tactics had little effect on him, in reality, much less in this realm where he had complete dominion over what happened.

In other words, it was a useless gambit.

Rising and floating into the air, his hands began to charge with a godly energy, a testament to his power and position wherever the group was.

"A creative, but quixotic endeavor. If you will not present your fear and hatred to me willingly... then I will drag it out of you myself! And with it, your very souls! You will all prove to be ideal hosts..."

The godly energy in his hands grew, not only in size, but also brighter in brighter, before he eventually blasted it right at the entire defenseless group, ready to instantly destroy them all!

"HaaaaAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"

Riesbyfe, who had been previously indisposed temporarily after receiving the initial attack by Diablo along with the others who had charged straight forward, had managed to recover at the last moment, recovering whatever stamina she had remaining and charging in front of the whole group and raising her shield defiantly.

FSSSH!

Diablo's energy blast collided right into Riesbyfe's shield, hitting Gamaliel with enough force that it threatened to break every bone in the Holy Knight's arms. However, she continued to stand against all odds, gritting her teeth harder than she ever had before as she attempted to hold off Diablo's power. She had never pushed her strength to this limit before, and it was already taking a toll on her body.

"Nnnghh... Gghhhhhaah!"

The force of the massive blast caused her feet to dig into the ground, forcing her to ever so slightly skid back a few inches. The increased stress on her feet impaired her ability to stand upright, and it wouldn't be long now until--

BOOM!

With an explosion, Riesbyfe let out an anguished scream as Diablo's beam not only overpowered the might of her shield and obliterated her very being, but also proceeded to instantly extend to the rest of the room in a flash, overtaking the room that was once shrouded in darkness with a blinding light that overtook and obliterated everyone in the room.

Diablo had won the fight.

...

Of course, to call it a true fight would be inaccurate.

As the dust settled, one thing was made very clear. There was no true fight going on at all against Diablo, for in reality, the devil had induced what was essentially a mass hallucination. A delusion of a fight against him, for all intents and purposes. From the start, they had no chance.

As the hallucination, the delusion, came to an end, and reality returned to the minds of the group, everyone would practically find themselves knocking on death's door, their bodies completely paralyzed and their minds nearing unconsciousness, completely helpless and defenseless against Diablo's plot of apparently possessing everyone and taking over their wills.

"A-Ah..." Riesbyfe found it difficult to breathe, or for that matter, even comprehend that she was still alive, having believed herself to have been killed and obliterated by Diablo's power just a moment prior. Her vision was blurry, threatening to fade to black any moment now as her body lay on the floor, just like everyone else. Her thoughts shifted briefly to Nashetania, to Jaffar, to the others who had died during this perilous journey and had never returned. If they were to die here for real, to lose themselves completely, would she be able to meet with them?

The knight's breath quivered, her mind then proceeding to think of those she had fought alongside... Lucio, Clark, Cullen... and all the rest of them. What would become of them? Diablo had made it clear what he intended to do to them, but she knew not what would ultimately happen to them as a result.

This uncertainty was perhaps what frightened her the most, bolstered by her descent into unconsciousness as she began to slip in and out of it...

One.. two.. three...

Lucifer hoped that it was all worth in the end. He hoped that someone would remember him if he was going to die today. He couldn't say goodbye to anyone, but he had pulled away from the kiss afterwards.

Five... six... seven....

Linda was still really from the shock of the kiss. Had that been festering for a while? She knew that she had used him for sex, but was there something more? If she was dying here, she certainly wouldn't know. Maybe it was for the better.

Eight... nine... ten...

Lucifer and Linda slipped into unconsciousness together, hopefully not dying. Maybe they wouldn't be possessed, only time would tell.

Schala's eyes closing and ignorance of her at first only frustrated and upset Setsuna, who's tears slowly increased in intensity. "Please!" She was running out of time. If she were to die now, she'd never be able to make sure everyone else got out safely. And she needed to do that, at the very least. And even if she didn't, it had been Shirou's order for her to heal... And she couldn't fail him. She wouldn't. So, when Schala approached, the blonde felt slight relief. "Th... thank you," she whispered weakly, assuming as Schala leaned over her that she was aiming to kiss her and replenish her. But she was wrong, Schala instead lifting her up, much to her dismay.

Damn it, this wasn't going to get her anywhere. "Y-you don't understand..!" she attempted to explain, only to cringe and falter in speaking. This was a bad sign.... A really bad sign. But she couldn't find her voice to explain, and her body wouldn't cooperate as she tried to close the distance and kiss Schala, remaining still aside from her trembling. And as though that weren't bad enough, it appeared that Diablo had grown tired of the group, attempting to kill them all off, only for Ries to take the attack for them.... And fail, the thing spreading through the room. "N-nnn...." she whimpered, mustering all of the little strength she had left in her to call out one last time, tears streaming down her face.

rsz_setsu_by_teh_zombish-dauzf0b.jpg

"Shirou...!" Her voice was broken and weak, showing extremely strong emotion for possibly the first time since her arrival as she willed every last bit of her being to move, to get to the male's side. But it was all to no avail as the attack took full effect and the world flashed in and out around her, her teeth gritting as she unwittingly went limp, struggling with all her might yet staying still despite. "S-Shirou...."

And then everything went black.

Not even she was strong enough...if only...Her thoughts flash to Krillin and his goofy grin and her bellowed daughter...She could never see her again...they would never know what had happened to her...even if paralyzed tears started to roll down her cheeks before finally...she slipped away into unconsciousness.

Cagliostro winks, raises a thumbs up at Hakuei and Alucard, then says.

"I would never dream of acquainting myself with incapable allies. You two have proven yourself to be formiddable in many ways, Alucard, Hakuei, and you too, Road. I might even have to call you fr-"

The beam of energy was ready to roll, interrupting Cagliostro. Cagliostro then turns to Azura.

Bju3mr7.jpg

"Hey hey~ Azura~" Cagliostro holds onto Azura's hand to reduce any semblance of fear she might have. "Think of your family, alright~?"

Cagliostro then turns to Alucard and Hakuei, who were just right beside them.

"I know that you're having a lovely moment, but... want to do this as a group~?" Cagliostro lets a hand out, ready to hold theirs in order to soothe their possible nervousness. Plus, she had learned to take a liking to them.

So, as Diablo's annhiliating blast destroys all, it was likely that everyone would close their eyes. Cagliostro, however, kept them open as the beam was blasted in her face.

Cagliostro simply laughs as the blast of energy was ready to strike her and everyone else down.

Cagliostro had made many achievements on Phantagrande

She invented alchemy, she caused great mayhem, resulting in her being sealed.

One thing that can never be shattered - her undying pride. If someone did shatter it, it would simply rebuild in split seconds.

Cagliostro didn't have anything to lose before this, but now she did. The difference, however, was that she was going to go with the things that she supposedly lost - her new allies.

Cagliostro faced Diablo, with nothing in her mind but the greatest of pride. This journey had taught her a lot, but it seems that her old self was better capable of laughing a situation off. Cagliostro was her older self once again.

She felt much less melancholy than all else who were prepared to fall.

The laughter of Cagliostro fills the illusionary air as she held her possibly-nervous allies' hands. They all braced for impact. While they were all remembering and uttering memories of their homes, Cagliostro only had a few words to add.

9sPoTz7.jpg

"You can never truly defeat me, you worm! GIVE ME YOUR ALL!"

And so all went to utter darkness.

Between the flickering of consciousness, Riesbyfe, and those among the team who still hung on to their lives underneath the consuming power of Diablo, could make out the searing, charred body of a familiar DJ. He wasn't dead, of course, not just yet; but much like the others, he wasn't doing too well. Lucio himself was gasping for air, trying to collect this thoughts. A vile mixture of despair, fear, confusion; the very feelings that Lucio said he would fight off in the beginning of this whole thing. His eyes fluttered open underneath the cracked green visor, weakly glancing over at Riesbyfe.

He smiled. Even when he's practically a charred corpse on the ground, Lucio remains smiling. A weak, broken smile; but a sign of optimism that hasn't gone out. Lucio was smiling because he was thinking about the journey, and the positive things that came out of this objectively horrible situation. He thought about how amazing Riesbyfe and Clark looked when they fought together, he thought about what it would've been like if he recorded a new album with Miku, if they got out of this alive. He thought about what it would've been like if the team could all hang out once they won the day.

He wondered if anyone else around him on this comfortable, broken floor was thinking the same things.

But the one thing that made him remain positive in these last few moments is how far the group had come. In the beginning, there were people in the team who would've killed each other without a second thought; and some of them did, of course, but they were misguided Traitors. Lost to the wrong tune, letting the fear of the bigger man get to them. But...in the end, there was a sense of teamwork across everyone. There were people in this team who weren't just allies by circumstance, but they were actual friends. Some people learned the meaning of 'we', and learned about the value of life even in the face of someone who feeds off of hatred and death.

...Lucio wondered if any of that was because of him. If it was, even just a little bit, then his smile would remain on his face, as he slowly began to descend into unconsciousness around the people he loved.

Guess that album is gonna have to be on hold, but it was worth it.

Seeing Setsuna like this made Schala stop her motions for the moment, instead, trying to lean in a little closer, trying to figure out what was wrong. While she unfortunately didn't quite know what Setsuna had wanted, it seemed that she was trying her hardest to help her... Somehow.

Had they stayed conscious for a few moments longer, it was possible that Setsuna might have been able to recover, but... Just before things might have been resolved, they were both hit with Diablo's seemingly unstoppable attack, and just like that, her vision faded to black.

As she lay there, absolutely still... Unable to move a single muscle, it soon dawned on her that they were never in a fight to begin with; the whole scenario had been one big illusion. A way to keep them occupied, until Diablo claimed his victory, when he took over each and every one of their bodies.

Despite all that effort she had tried to go through, to help put an end to Diablo, it had all been for nothing... But yet... Even knowing that the end for her was likely near, she wasn't scared anymore.

Instead, she let herself relax, trying to imagine herself in that group hug that Senna had (likely jokingly) proposed... It would have been nice, to finally share a tender moment with everyone, after all they had gone through, but it seemed like just a dream now...

Just a dream...

Before long, Schala had stopped trying to move all together, letting her mind go blank, as she slowly but surely, began to embrace a state of what seemed like Oblivion.

Clark was slipping, however he kept fighting Diablo's control. Fighting, Clark was good at that. Looking at Riesbyfe and Lucio, Clark felt regret. The two of people were prime example of what Clark loved about people. Lucio was just good. A good, decent, fun loving guy. Clark would never be able to hang out with him, heck, saying goodbye right now be nice. And Riesbyfe? Guilt. She was always there for him. When Lana died, Ries was there. She always believed in him. Now he never know how she felt about him being a traitor. Clark hoped she'd forgive him, but couldn't blame her if she didn't. Road came to his mind as well as Clark struggled to lift his arm. Never he be able to try her. Never would he be able to ask Azura and Joshua for forgiveness. Never would he be able to Shirou. Never would be able to save Lex Luthor from himself.

"I'm not giving up...."

Clark battled to keep his eyes open when his thought went to Lana. He failed her. The woman he loved since a childhood was gone. He had no time to mourn her or even think about her. A memory came to mind from freshmen year.

They had failed. They had given Diablo an opening, and he had easily overtaken them all. It was over, it was all over. Alice fell to the ground, ASURA-6 extended like a hand, catching her, supporting her.

How could she have been so foolish? She should have kept fighting. Even here, when taken away from the UAA, she had never stopped. The small moments of peace had always been taken up by more fighting, more loss, more pain.

And now..it was all over. Her life ended here, with these other people-strangers. In the end, had she become close to anyone? Had her life mattered? In the end, no one would remember that there was once an assassin named Alice. No one would care. All that fighting...for nothing.

Alice didn't know how long she had. All she could feel was herself weakening. Little by little, she was fading. She closed her eyes, hand twitching, the only power she had left over her body. Soon...soon it would all be over. And yet, she still wanted to fight. What for? Wasn't this what she wanted? Wasn't Death's embrace something she craved? Why, then, fight? That little glimmer, the sliver of freedom, of comeraderie, she had found here, in this horrible place...it couldn't be enough to make her desire life.

Heh. What strange creature humans were.

Her hand's movements got smaller and smaller until nothing was left. Alice Twilight lay still, eyes shut, mouth drawn in a tight line. No movement could be found anymore...save for one last thing: a single tear slid out the corner of her eye, down her face.

Then all was quiet for Alice Twilight.

Is this the end?

The battle was over. Diablo had won. It seemed as if they never had a chance of winning. Domon lay on the ground, unable to move, and nearly unconscious. He could barely make out the image of some of his allies' bodies, unsure if any of them were alive or dead, including himself. He thought about the others who had fought with him. He hardly knew any of them, and even though they had spent such a short time together, he felt honored to die alongside them. He also thought of his friends and family back home.

Home...

It seemed like such a distant memory now. Images of his loved ones flashed through his mind. The other Shuffle Alliance members... His mother and father... Kyoji... Rain... Domon's only regret was that he couldn't say goodbye to those dear to him.

As he lost consciousness, a faint glimmer of hope remained in Domon's heart. If there was any kind of afterlife, the possibility of seeing his mother and Kyoji again brought peace to his mind as his eyes closed and everything faded to black.

"...Hah."

Shirou couldn't help but laugh as reality slapped the group in the face. It was all a farce from the beginning. They weren't fighting. It was all just a little trick of the mind. In reality, the group may as well have been a group of napping children and there'd have been absolutely no difference.

With what took far too much effort, he clenched his left fist. How ridiculous. He couldn't muster any power and if his eyes were to be believed, neither could anyone else. Shirou had no clever plan, no twisted logic, and no weapons to break through this time. His mind could scarcely separate dream and reality and his body would hardly move a muscle.

So much for finding another route. What path that was was of little importance as long as he chose it himself. His life would have its ups and downs, and perhaps all sorts of terrible things would happen, but they'd all be on him. His choices would lead right to that. But this left him no options. No choices. No actions.

Schala's eyes closing and ignorance of her at first only frustrated and upset Setsuna, who's tears slowly increased in intensity. "Please!" She was running out of time. ...

Like hell he'd go out like that.

Even if there seemed to be nothing he could do, he'd keep searching. There had to be a choice. No matter how messed up, strange, or illogical it may have seemed, there had to be something. He didn't know what it was, but no matter what, it'd all be over if he stopped thinking.

"...Tch, shit."

Even with his renewed burst of spirit from Setsuna's weak call, he couldn't think of anything he could do. Once again, he was locked down by forces beyond his will, forces beyond what he could think and plan around. Nothing pissed him off so much as a situation like this.

"Why'd ya have to stick around a punk like me, huh? Nothin' good ever comes of that..."

His fist and teeth stayed clenched and his mind kept ticking. Hopeless, useless, perhaps it was both of those things and more but never would he stop until he no longer drew breath.

Alucard wasn't used to being given attention. At least, not anymore. Things had changed, and to be frank, the dhampir did not seek attention. One could even say he was sick of it, as the heir to Castelvania and as the Prince of Darkness. But this was a different kind of attention - affection, from a person he had only come to know recently. This foreign, alien sensation was strange to the dhampir, but it did not feel wrong or uncomfortable - aside from the fact he had noticeably tightened up at the embrace.

"Fight in your heart...? I do not see how that can win a fight with a demon such as this... and with such high stakes at hand," he began to murmur, evidently confused at what Hakuei was trying to get him to understand.
yO88Vgw.png

"I see. To feed off our pain and despair..." the vampire repeated.

"I have only heard of demons who do such things to human men. ... Does this mean I too, am a human?"

"Am I really worthy to receive the emotions of others...?"

uteeuXd.png

What pained Alucard the most was that no matter how hard they fought and tried, or thought about ways to defeat the demon - it seemed to be all for nothing. He turned away from Hakuei and narrowed his eyes at it, seeing the glint in its eyes only solidified his thoughts that the creature was just toying with them all this time. It had the upper hand since the beginning.

His hand on his sword's hilt tightened as the demon rose higher and higher, that filthy energy gathering in its hands. His other arm was instinctively held out in front of Hakuei, and as Diablo fired the bright white beam, its light obliterating Riesbyfe and those behind her - and the group as a whole. Just before the light struck him and his companions, the dhampir - for the first time in his long, long life - did something he had not done ever before. He took the woman into a warm embrace, his cloak fluttering about their figures as everything around them, and everything that he could see, disappeared as he faded into unconsciousness.
"Hakuei, I-"

---

gKk0r0v.png

He could swear he could hear the voice of his father, the man he had killed with his bare hands.
The demon's words echoed in his mind. That it would use their bodies as a vessel. It took a while for the dhampir's mind to wrap around that fact, but now, those words hung around him heavily. A deep, echoey voice resonated from his memories. Intimidating and formal as usual, the words of his father were what he suddenly remembered.

"You have ever been the ally of humans.

Now is the time to put aside your weak human side."
And what, let this demon take over his body? Even as the world finally came to its true light, the dhampir found himself too weak to understand what had just happened. It was akin to that time the Succubus had lied to him with petty illusions and tricks - but worse. His body refused to respond to his commands, and he found it impossible to focus. What of Road and Hakuei? He couldn't see them - he couldn't even focus on what was right in front of him? There was fear in his heart now, fear of his fate and the unknown. Alucard had sunken into deep sleep before - but not like this.

He wondered if he was still holding the woman in his arms. He felt warm, very warm, a strange and foreign sensation. One thing he knew for sure, was that being a human wasn't something that was considered a weakness. A lot of people had taught him that in this long journey.
If he could accept himself as a human, does that mean he was truly deserving of love?

"Hmph. How unwise. But... Perhaps there is no use in prolonging the inevitable."

SP2-Ries.png

She wasn't certain if her words had truly carried through to Alucard's heart, but damn if Hakuei didn't try. There was something crucial that the dhampir had to understand, and if no one else was to teach him how to accept himself, who would? Even as everything was tumbling down to pieces around them, she still licked her lips nervously and watched him with glistening eyes as he echoed her words.

"You were always worthy of them, Alucard. You're human to me."

The 'tainted' blood that ran in his veins didn't matter to her. The sordid past that he may have had didn't matter in the present. What she saw in this short yet lifechanging time told her enough.

He was a good person, even if he refused to see it in himself.

It was running late. Her eyes widened as she heard Diablo speak, and reveal that the battle beforehand, the desperateness in which everyone fought, was all but for naught...

Yet strangely, she didn't feel as much despair as she could have felt in that moment.

Hakuei let herself cry, but the emotions that caused tears to trickle down the princess's eyes wasn't solely despair.

Was it wrong to feel peace in these moments? Melancholy and happiness mingle despite being opposing forces. Joy embraced despair. They were all going to go through this together, and Hakuei didn't feel alone. She had met Road and Alucard, had formed a kinship with Azura, saw all the struggles that this group had somehow survived. What was to say this was the end of their story?

She flashed a smile filled with tears towards Cagliostro, holding out a hand as the nefarious energy built and built in Diablo's hands.

"It has been an honor."

hjUM25E.jpg

And just before the beam reached them, Hakuei could have sworn that Alucard moved. Her eyes went wide as he pulled her towards him, the cloak obscuring her view of the blinding light as she looked up and saw his lips move. Just before Diablo razed everything to nothing, the princess's eyes widened as she heard her name leave his lips, along with words that -

Oh.

Realization flooded like warm sunlight inside her, softening her features as she smiled at Alucard before everything went white.

...

WAiJARy.jpg

What was up? What was down?

Where were they? Where was she?

Hakuei couldn't tell anymore. The blast from Diablo had obliterated them, yet here they were, seemingly still alive... Yet she couldn't move. Her limbs felt lifeless as that of a corpse's, though what should have been a frightening realization didn't rattle her any longer. Her eyes fluttered, it was a struggle to open them already as it was, but she summoned what meager strength she had left to peer at the others in the room.

They all lay defeated, but they weren't alone.

She wanted to close her eyes. The darkness was calling, and its siren song was difficult to resist.

Only the thoughts of her brother and her family, of Alucard and Road, and of all the things she saw and learned here kept her going on.

Her mind raced even as her body lay immobile.

We're still alive, and I refuse to let go of hope.

"I don't regret meeting you."

It was a low murmur meant only for Alucard to hear. She could feel his presence around her for some reason. Was he still embracing her? Or was she the one who held him?

Did it matter?

His breath. She could still hear it, and it settled the fear that threatened to eat her whole.

She clung to it as everything went dark.

"Let's travel together one day, Alucard..."

With Road, Cagliostro, and Azura, with everyone. It's not yet over.

This story has just begun. I will yet see Hakuryuu again.

"I'll think of my family...and you guys, as sappy as that may sound." she chuckled, reaching for Joshua's hand with her free one. If it had been taken she would pull him close to her side and plant a quick peck onto his lips before facing the attack head on. She was ready to embrace death after the first time.

A tear or two fell, but she wasn't completely sad or upset.

If it was her time to go, then she would go. Joshua would be with her, and her family may not have her with them anymore, but she at least can possibly watch over them with Joshua by her side, as well as being with all of those she fought with.

Then all went white, as she had these final thoughts to soothe her tired soul. She gasped at some point, unable to feel her body much, going into and out of consciousness with her eyes fluttering before finally closing once more. She was sure that for a split second she had experienced death for the second time. Hoping Joshua was still beside her, she slipped into unconsciousness shortly afterwards.

"..."

For a long time, there was only silence for Setsuna, and an occasional ringing in her ears or distant, unintelligible conversation she couldn't quite make out. Shapes and colors blotted her sight, and she felt an overwhelming sense of pain and weakness throughout her whole being. But after a long while, something strange happened. She could've sworn she heard a voice and saw the blurry figure of someone she hadn't seen for days now. Or, well, were she not in deep pain and hallucination, perhaps that fact may have crossed her mind. But rather, she felt as though the memory that played in her mind was where she was, now.

Back on that rooftop, staring on with tears in her eyes as she witnessed the confession of love from her master to that girl. Kuu Shiratori. It was dark, the only light coming from the stars, the moon, the brilliant colorful fireworks and the festival below. The form of Kyoushirou embracing Kuu perfectly outlined in the moonlight, their silhouettes captured in a picturesque way with the stars and fireworks dancing and shimmering behind them. And yet, despite her master's clear happiness and the beauty of the scene... Setsuna could not help but feel pain of a new sort overwhelm her. A pain that was not physically inflicted, yet made her feel sick to the stomach all the same. A pang in her heart as she witnessed the scene, tears unwittingly streaming down her face as she witnessed it all again.

But something was different now.

As she witnessed the exchange, Setsuna suddenly let out a cry, collapsing to the ground with widened eyes as a cold, hard object pierced her body, impaling her and coming clean out her back despite it being stabbed through her front. In a flash, Kyoushirou had come before her, stabbing her with a sword.

"Your purpose is served. Die."

.....

And then everything was dark again, for a few moments, before another memory just as livid as before trapped her, toying with her mind. And after it? Another. And another, and another, and another.... Each just as tormenting as the last.

rsz_kyoushirototowanosorafull55542_by_teh_zombish-dat7cji.jpg

As she continued to fade in and out of memories, consciousness and it's opposite, silence was all she could hear. A confusing mixture of darkness and piercing, blinding lights being all that she could see. All she could feel? Pain. Anguish. But above all else? Worry and fear. Not for herself, no... Nothing as trivial as that. Even in her state between consciousness and a lack of it, Setsuna's thoughts remained on everyone but her. No, this worry revolved around blurry images going through her mind, of faces she knew that she recognized but couldn't quite place in her current state. Voices she knew well, but couldn't make out the words of. After a small bit of time, it seemed pointless to try to make them out any longer. It wasn't working, regardless of how hard she fought to focus. Even the typically helpful, gentle chime of the bells Kyoushirou had given her so long ago did little to help her make them out...

And then she heard it. Quiet, but there, nonetheless.

@Midnight Maiden @Verite @Atomyk @everyone
She knew that voice, recognized it easily. Clearer than the chiming of the bells strung to her ribbons and even more focus-drawing. Was that... really what Shirou thought? Were the words real, or some screwed up illusion, a trick being played on her by her mind, or even the demon? She didn't know, but as her teal eyes squinted in what felt like eternal darkness, she could've sworn that she could make out Shirou's form on the floor.

She wasn't sure, but he almost looked sad.

Disappointment swelled in her that she could not comfort him. Kyoushirou had always said kisses and hugs cheered people up, but she could do neither. That fact mixed with the fact he was, like the other forms she couldn't quite make out around her, collapsed on the ground? She almost hoped it was an illusion. But reality or hallucination, she couldn't give up. Not even if she were barely clinging to life's edge, dangling on the brink of death. She would not let these people down. So her battle continued, eyes briefly squeezing shut with effort as she willed herself to move. To do something. Anything, really. Anything she could. But unfortunately, the streaming of tears and slightest twitch of her pointer finger she managed were not saving anyone. "N-nnn... Ah!"

I will not submit! I'll fight. I'll fight and fight and fight...! Funny how much your body could protest such desires when, in theory, they were so easy to act out. Perhaps life was laughing at her right now. The demon they'd been fighting most likely was, at the very least. Not that she was entirely aware what being laughed at meant, she knew it was an insult. But insults would not sway her. In fact, at this point? Nothing would, for it was not just nature she was acting on, now. It was one thing, setting her mind to something for someone else.

It was another when you set your heart to something for yourself.

Epilogue
"Point Zero"

The Story As It Comes to a Close
After a skirmish, William Birkin eventually was defeated by the combined efforts of the Survivors, who had also managed to cure themselves of the T-Virus. Moving forward from there, they eventually found themselves reunited with those previously thought to have been murdered by the hands of the Traitors, the victims revealed to have been "resurrected" by use of cloning, or rather, Replica Technology. However, they had all learned the hard way that those who were not murdered by the Traitors but died through other means would not return, the deaths of those such as Miku Hatsune and Jaffar being mourned briefly.

Eventually, the group moved on again, guided by instructions procured by Cullen Bloodstone and others, before eventually managing to reach the fabled vault, where the Tesseract lie in wait. However, before they were able to procure it, a strange being, its existence hinted at throughout the course of the event, made itself known to the group, killing off Milton and Philip, before identifying himself as Diablo, implied to have masterminded the ordeal from the very beginning. With the group having made it further than he had ever intended, Diablo decided to wrap up loose ends and put an end to the group, sparking a grueling battle between himself and the group. A battle that no one realized would come to shape the entire multiverse forever.

However, his power was too much even for the combined efforts of what remained of the Survivors, and he eventually overcame them in the battle that was eventually revealed to be more than it initially appeared.

Reveling in his victory, Diablo stood among the desecrated field, littered with the bodies of the group who had interfered with his plans from the very beginning. Their malevolence energy would sustain him for eons to come, and they would make ideal hosts to overtake. Using his power to influence the minds of others he had bested, his presence began to seep itself into the minds of everyone around.

... Only to be impeded by a meddling loose end.

Albert Wesker, dressed in his black coat, strolled casually into the vault, paying little mind to those passing out in pain around him. Of course, he had known of this inevitable conclusion, having worked alongside Diablo all this time.

Though the survivors had not noticed it, there had always been two Albert Weskers since they arrived. This one, insultingly named beta Wesker by Umbrella, had been pulled in from another dimension. Oswell E. Spencer had taken a liking to this Wesker, and he was given quite the number of privileges. Unfortunately for Umbrella, this Wesker had come from a dimension ravaged by Diablo, who had mistakenly arrived in search of the fabled Tesseract. Considering this blunder, the evil entity had seen a benefit to a partnership between them, at least until he got what he wanted.

Which is why Wesker couldn't possibly allow Diablo to win this day.

It had been Diablo's idea to infect the minds of the survivors, forcing a few to act on his behalf as traitors. According to him, a cycle of death gave way to a flurry of negative emotions, which generated an energy that he uniquely could consume. This power allowed him to eventually take over the minds of all the survivors, something he was just about to succeed with. It was just too bad that Diablo's universe hopping left him weak, for it would have been in his best interest to keep Wesker controlled as well.

The device in Wesker's hand did two things. One, it would render the device he gave Ada useless, allowing him to control the devices in the group's heads. Two, it allowed him to handily mess with the devices whenever he wanted. If only SHIELD had the time to remove the devices completely instead of just turning them off, then maybe this wouldn't have been possible.

With Diablo in the minds of the hosts, all it would take is the press of a button. "Thank you for all the help," Wesker said, before pressing that sole button and shutting the survivors' brains off from reality. The great beast Diablo shuddered and contorted before Wesker's eyes, before vanishing completely. It had been little more than a mirage, but Wesker could only imagine that his physical body, wherever it may be, was going through a similar problem. To shut off all those minds at once with him inside each one...

"Wesker!" someone suddenly screamed, and the man felt a strong force smashing the device he had used out of his hand. He turned quickly, finding Claire Redfield on one knee, staring at him with utter hatred as she aimed her gun at him. Beside her was a member of SHIELD, Wanda, huddled over one of the survivors in pain. These two had never been implanted or controlled, but Wesker had expected Diablo to kill them handily.

This presented a unique opportunity.

SPWMwT4.gif

"Chris' little sister... how good to see you." Wesker moved faster than the eye could see, appearing before Claire in a flash and knocking the gun out of her hands with a kick. He then grabbed her by the neck and lifted her above the ground. She had yet to lay witness to how strong his powers had grown, leaving her utterly surprised. It only made Wesker smirk devilishly.

"I've considered it, you know. How best to get to Chris. I tried once with Jill Valentine, but why not his sister? I wasn't so successful the first time, but with the Tesseract... tell me, Claire, do you wish to be a part of an experiment?"

Claire, obviously, could not respond, but Wesker didn't care to let her anyway. He dropped her to the ground and delivered a blow to her head to knock her out. She fell limply into his arms and Wesker felt a rush of adrenaline. How tragic this would be. He looked down upon Wanda, saw her still desperately huddled over one of the survivors. It took Wesker a moment to gather she was using her powers to shield him, but it was obvious she was dying as a result. So very pathetic.

"Goodbye," said Wesker. He then disappeared from the vault, both Claire and the Tesseract gone with him.

...

It was not an ideal situation for Wanda Maximoff. Quite far from the truth, to be honest. But if he was the only one that could be saved, then she would save that one life at all costs. That was the primary thought going through the scarlet witch's mind as she used the last of her power to preserve the consciousness of the survivor she huddled over.

As the entire group lay comatose, courtesy of Wesker and the devices that had been implanted inside them in the very beginning, there was one exception. Wanda made sure of that with her last breath.

His name was Adam Eberhart, the one uncut link that managed to escape the same fate as everyone else.

leon17.png

"A-Aghh..."

Shortly after Wesker had temporarily left the area with Claire, Leon Scott Kennedy could only groan as he slowly came to, having been knocked out shortly before the "fight" with Diablo. His sight was hazy and his breathing was ragged, but it wasn't anything he hadn't encountered before. It was just as well; his own safety was the last thing he was concerned over. The man's thoughts quickly drifted over to the group, and a sense of dread overloaded his emotions as he looked upon them all. Standing among all these bodies... It was unnerving, even for a man who prided himself on having nerves of steel, considering all that he had gone through before.

He frantically looked around, hoping that one of them was at least still conscious, or hell, alive, assuming they were all dead. His heart dropped when it seemed like it was all hopeless, mourning those around, and even those who were not. Ada, who had elusively managed to avoid his line of sight the entire time, hiding in plain sight, was out of commission, and Claire was nowhere to be seen, likely taken away by Wesker. There was nothing he could do for any of these people. Nothing except--

"A-Aughh... Fuck. Help... I can't move."

"!"

Scrambling over to the sound, Leon practically jerked his head to the weak voice of Adam, trapped under the corpse of Wanda Maximoff, who had given her life to shield Adam from the device that sent everyone else into a coma. Delicately moving Wanda's body off Adam, Leon helped the man onto his feet, wrapping Adam's arm around his own shoulder, before wasting no time in moving out.

"C'mon... We... We need to get out of here," Leon breathed, not realizing how badly he was limping as he spoke, "The people that sent the group here... S.H.I.E.L.D., right? They... They might be able to help..."

"What... What about... everyone else?" Adam practically slurred, as though in a daze, likely a result of Wanda's influence protecting him.

"There's nothing we can do for them! We... We need to move, before Wesker comes back," Leon replied grimly. He didn't like the situation at all, but what could he do?! He could barely save himself and Adam, let alone the entire group, so he did what he had to.

He left everyone behind.

***

"Excellent. Load the pods in, and take us to the next world over. I have... a stop to make, before we come right back," Wesker ordered, and as directed, his Umbrella subordinates obediently did his bidding, loading the pods containing the comatose form of everyone into a large cargo plane, ready for take-off.

Once everyone was loaded up, Wesker boarded the plane and signaled the pilot to go. With that, the cargo plane flew into the air, and with the Tesseract in hand, taken from the Umbrella facility once Wesker had returned to the room to collect all the bodies, he conjured a portal leading into the next world over, plotting out his next move now that he finally had the edge over S.H.I.E.L.D. for once. In other words, the scales were tipped in his favor, and he would not let this opportunity escape from his grasp.

Wesker smiled in a sinister manner, self-satisfied as he crossed his arms.

"The right to be God... That right is now mi--"

BOOM!

"What?!"

An explosion rocked the entire cargo plane, catching the Umbrella chairman by surprise. Smoke arose from the back, and as Wesker rushed to the cockpit, an alarmed look on his face, he gritted his teeth.

"What the hell is going on?!"

"We're under fire, sir! Confirmed hit. Missile hit the rear, but the hull miraculously managed to hold," the Umbrella pilot responded, attempting to keep the plane level and maintain its altitude, "It looks like... an extremely large aircraft?!"

Wesker growled like a provoked beast, knowing instantly who it was.

"So... S.H.I.E.L.D. is still trying to bite at my heels, eh? No matter. They cannot undo our victory. Full speed ahead."

d0fa2124fae04c19a0fa921f4bb4e73f.png

FWOOSH!

From behind Wesker's cargo plane, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, commanded by Director Nick Fury himself, prepared another missile, hoping to get a better lock-on this time. As the cargo plane drew nearer and nearer towards the portal generated by Wesker's Tesseract, it was impeded once again as the helicarrier fired yet another missile at it, yielding another direct hit on the rear.

And as a result, two things happened.

One, the explosion caused the plane to shake once again, causing Wesker to lose his balance and stumble into the wall, inadvertently hitting the sensitive Tesseract against it as well, causing it to open up yet another portal through space-time, though rather than being right in front of them like the first one, it was pointed vertically, generated below the cargo plane.

Two, the missile managed to undo the rear hatch of the plane, causing it to slam open, exposing the pods loaded up. And as the plane, still flying forward despite its second injury, continued its movement, the pod closest to the edge was unfastened and loosened from its place, before sliding right out the hatch and falling into the second portal down below, where it disappeared from there. The pod of Riesbyfe Stridberg, which would not be recovered until a great time later by a party that had yet to be formed.

But the one crucial event that Fury had hoped would happen did not come through. And that event in question, of course, being stopping the plane, as it was far too late for him, and he could only watch while the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents frantically attempted to ready another missile as the cargo plane disappeared into the portal connected to the next parallel world.

"... And that is how the pods ended up here. Where they have resided ever since the beginning of the Murder Games, with their bodies milked for their Malevolence energy continuously... but alas, it was all for naught. Albert Wesker, both of him, died off with Diablo... or should I say, the Arch Demon, and the Malevolence was never able to put to disuse anyway."

And with that, the old man known as Oswell E. Spencer finished the recollection of what he claimed to be the very first Murder Game.

The scene is different now.

A few weeks following the Coalition Civil War, agents Alvin, Kenji Miyazawa, and the organization AI known as Alter Ego, with an amnesiac woman known as Riesbyfe Stridberg in tow, previously found and taken care of by the M.E.U. all this time, had followed a tip provided by one Mom Lalonde that pointed them towards a remote world, a seemingly abandoned Umbrella outpost.

And never would they have suspected that this is what they would find.

Before any of them were able to question him further, the old man broke into a coughing fit for a brief moment, a testament of his sickly appearance. Once he eased up, letting out a weak breath, it was then that Riesbyfe spoke, gingerly walking over to one of the pods.

ekjnmED.png

"Yes... It's all coming back to me now," the Holy Knight murmured, the memories returning to her mind, as though she were finally refreshed of it all after so long. Placing a hand on the pod she stood next to, she faced the old man, a resolute look on her face. "How do we free them? You said it yourself; you have no more use for them, so let them go."

"..." Spencer remained silent for a moment, the only sound made by him being his ragged breathing, but eventually, he let out a low chuckle, before nodding. "If you insist," he spoke, before pressing a button on the wall he sat in front of, and with that, all the pods simultaneously opened up, letting out a loud hissing sound as, for the first time in a long time, the individuals inside the pods were exposed to fresh air.

"They'll come to on their own soon enough. Just give them a moment..."

a844858d934a4b7397588855a964512d.png

"Amazing..." The accompanying Coalition agent, Kenji Miyazawa, could only murmur underneath his breath, "So, did we just stumble upon the... the Progenitors to the Progenitors?" He inquired incredulously.

"That's one way to look at it," Alvin mumbled, still a little flabbergasted.

Thm8W0H.png

"Alvin, I don't sense any malevolence from these people," said Alter Ego, sounding a bit too chipper considering the story they had just listened to. "I may not be able to sense such energy as well as one of our exorcists, but it's all... so clean. I think in extracting malevolence from them, they have been purified. I doubt there is any worry they could be used like the survivors of the first-- sorry, first official Murder Game."

ZrsIySX.png

"Huh, couldn't we use this method to purify others as well then?"

"Hm, no..." Alter Ego looked pensive. "This took a couple years in a comatose state. Sapient beings naturally feel negative emotions as a part of life, so some kind of malevolence is normal. Basically, this method would not be ideal, unless of course, one was willing to go to sleep for a few years."

"Right..." The man sighed, walking over toward the pods. "This is gonna make for one long report. I guess our people in the Coalition could probably connect the dots in history better than I could."

"...!"

A strange guttural sound could be heard, prompting the group to turn to Spencer in alarm. He was clutching his chest and huddled over his wheelchair in pain. Alvin ran to him first, only to find the old man dropping an empty syringe to the ground. "It's over... over... for years I have waited, only to be disappointed. D-Damn you... Damn you all. I am the last... and Umbrella dies with m-me..."

There was nothing that could be done.

In the few short moments following, the people in the pods began to awaken. They would be dazed, lost, and confused, with no recollection of their time spent in the pods. The devices in their heads would have been long removed, thankfully.

"Let's... let's start identifying these people," said Alvin with a sigh.

"Heritage for the Future"

Set just after the escape of Leon and Adam, and just before the events of The Ties That Bind.

1e3cad59eae8c47522d4288d03415342.jpg

Adam Eberhart was an oddball.

He was unlike most men. Though unassuming as he might seem, he held a distinction among humans that set him apart from the rest. Not just his inappropriate attraction towards little girls, but his individuality. There weren't many men like him in his world, and definitely for the better.

It was not ideal for Diablo, thought to have been temporarily vanquished, but with Albert Wesker's interference rendering most of the group of prospective hosts comatose with the failsafe machines inside their bodies, he had to, humiliatingly enough, scrape the bottom of the barrel as it were. If he wanted to remain within this multiverse, then he would have to take desperate measures, and sacrifice part of what he was. That said, as Diablo hid within his realm, attempting to recover and return to the world, he would have to make use of his new "host" and not only assimilate him, but let himself be assimilated by the individual known as Adam Eberhart.

Of course, perhaps the term "host" was a bit inaccurate. It was not as though Diablo was possessing the man, try as he might. For all intents and purposes, Adam Eberhart remained as he was, the exact same as he was before, mostly due to that meddling wench known as Wanda Maximoff, who had managed to use her power to shield the man's mind from Diablo's complete influence. However, while he was unable to overtake it, he was still at least able to peer into his mind and assimilate... not the memories and personality of Adam Eberhart themselves, but rather, the idea of them. The concept of them.

To put it in terms a human of the modern age would most readily understand, it was like copying the contents of a document and pasting it into another existing document with its own contents, combining the two, rather than overwriting the second document completely with the contents of the first. Through that, Diablo slowly began his transformation into something else. He knew that he would likely lose his own sense of individuality with this, combining two distinct elements to create something else entirely. But once again, it had to be done. There was simply no other choice.

And so, thus began the transformation of Diablo into something beyond a demon, beyond a devil, beyond an unholy fiend.

The transition into becoming an Arch Demon.

"..."

Nick Fury sat alone in his quarters aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. They had effectively failed. He was unable to make good on his promise to send the unfortunate group back home after Umbrella had taken them out, like fish out of water, and more than that, not only had they managed to escape with the poor souls in their grasp once again, but the Tesseract remained within their grasp as well, the cube's power practically waiting to be used once again in order to be used on another pair of unwitting, unwilling people from across the multiverse. A lose-lose situation.

The man sighed, thinking pensively over the situation. At the very least, according to a report from one Leon Scott Kennedy, they were at least able to deliver some crippling blows to Umbrella before going out, taking out the Birkins, but other menaces remained as well, including the Nemesis monster up their sleeve, and of course, the head of the centipede himself, Albert Wesker.

A man who had unfortunately lived to die another day.

Of course, heartless as it may sound, maybe it wasn't a complete loss if one looked at the situation in a certain light. Knowing Wesker's movements and his steps out of the shadows, it was only a matter of time before he made another move, especially if he'd consider what had just transpired a "victory" over S.H.I.E.L.D. as well. Confidence bred carelessness after all, and though Fury understood that Wesker was a meticulous man, he was also a man of action, even if the acting happened behind the scenes most of the time.

But action couldn't exclusively happen behind the shadows. A man with sunglasses needed to have the sun in his life once in a while after all. And this time, they'd be ready.

BEEP! BEEP!

As if on cue, Fury's communicator began to rapidly beep, causing him to snap out of his senses. Retrieving it from the side, he pressed down on it, activating the call it received.

"Speaking."

"Director Fury, it's Redfield," the voice on the other end reported, "We have a major situation here! Complete and utter chaos in Las Vegas. Wesker finally made his move alright, and that space-time disturbance you mentioned... It's there. You were right on the money, sir. It happened again, like you said. Requesting immediate backup. I don't know how long I can handle the situation; people are acting crazy, worse than any virus Umbrella ever made before!"

"..." Fury remained silent for a moment, as though he needed to comprehend it all. His middle-aged features remained stiff, as though he were told the most mundane of news, but inside, a fire raged on, stirring inside, and he stood up, quickly marching out of his quarters and onto the helicarrier bridge.

"I'm on my way. Hold out for as long as you can. Fury, over and out."

Deactivating the communicator, the man, having made his way over to the center of the bridge, his own little command station, looked down at the workers below, before glancing over at an agent who had approached him from the side.

"Sir? What are your orders?"

Fury looked over at the man, not responding immediately. The young man wasn't an ideal agent to have, but considering how understaffed an organization dedicated to saving the world always was, he needed all the help he could get.

tumblr_inline_o75e8vbVqa1sdsctl_100.png

"..."

After a brief silence, Fury looked back over at the center of the room and out at the window exposing the sky outside, the helicarrier flying above the clouds.

"Set a course for Las Vegas, Mr. Eberhart. You said you wanted action? Well, gear up. You're going to get plenty of it with S.H.I.E.L.D. now. You're with the big boys now, after all. And us big boys... We play for keeps."

24f81265455d453f956ea4cd3c0d4bc3.png

Adam Eberhart, agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., nodded eagerly.

"Yes, sir."

And from there, the first "true" Murder Game began to unfold, and the multiverse's fate was set.

"Key to the Truth, Door to the Past"

Set shortly after the third chapter of The Heavy Saga, possibly just before the events of Restless in Rapture.

Ries13.png

"..."

In more ways than one, Riesbyfe Stridberg felt like a woman out of time.

When she was found by the organization known as the Multiverse Emergency Unit, or rather M.E.U. for short, lying dormant within a strange pod, the Holy Knight never would have imagined that she had apparently been sleeping for a rather extended period of time. Of course, no one there, despite their best of intentions, was able to exactly determine the origins of the pod, let alone how long exactly she had been put to sleep in there. Then again, considering all this... multiverse business, it was hard to put in a definite term, considering the world she was discovered on. After all, time was relative to the exact world. In other words, as far as her own world was concerned, she either could have been gone for either little more than a day, or for many years. But that wasn't what caused Riesbyfe the greatest deal of fear.

No, it was not the fear of being forgotten in time, displaced and discombobulated. She was a knight, after all, she knew that much, and as a knight, she had never asked to be remembered, luxurious as the prospect might be. It was good enough for her that she knew she was doing good work, protecting good people.

No, what scared Riesbyfe the most was... how she did not remember her home world very well.

She could vaguely recall minor elements, such as a great presence of demons, mages, and so on, but no actual individuals to recall. Admittedly, she was able to steadily recall more and more as time passed, but it was to little avail. It was like attempting to find all the pieces of an impossible puzzle and piecing them together. Thus, the M.E.U. was unable to send her back on her way. Then again, perhaps even if she did know, she would still be reluctant to immediately return, given that she also failed to remember the more important blurb in her past notably.

But we'll get to that later.

The other way in which Riesbyfe felt like a woman out of time... If the first would describe her as "displaced from time," then the other way would be stated as... She was simply out of time. As in, she had no time remaining. But for what? Even she did not know. But if she had been gone for so long, trapped in an endless sleep, like a person with no mouth who had to scream, then perhaps it was too far past time to do anything. How many others were there like her out there? Perhaps they might have a better idea on what had transpired in her past, wherever they were.

Yes, there must have been a time where all she worried about was what she could not do, but now, she worried about what she was even capable of doing at all.

"How are you feeling today?" The voice of a woman inquired from behind Riesbyfe, surprising her and snapping her back to reality. The woman was none other than Carissa, leading member of the M.E.U., who had been a part of the expedition that recovered the knight's pod in the first place.

"Ah... Well as always, I suppose," Riesbyfe answered, remaining in her seat, rubbing her hand against her face. At this moment, her metal gauntlets were off, revealing surprisingly soft skin underneath. A woman underneath iron was still a woman, "Bits and pieces are slowly coming back, but... It continues to amount to very little. I'm sorry."

"An apology is not necessary. It cannot be helped, after all," Carissa remarked, crossing her arms, "Still, you never know. What you end up remembering could always be of some importance. What do you remember now? Anything new?"

Ries14.png

"..."

Riesbyfe remained silent for another moment, attempting to collect all that she did remember, before speaking again. "Well... Only a few names. A man named... Birkin. And a demon known as Diablo. Other than that, nothing else that I haven't already recalled."

Carissa pursed her lips slightly. Indeed, she was right. The names hardly rang a bell, though the mention of a demon did pique her interest slightly. That is, a demon tied to the Murder Games. Riesbyfe remembered enough that Carissa was able to identify her situation as a classic case of a Murder Game, but... The records generously provided by the Coalition did not match anything that Riesbyfe had described. The possibility that it resided from The Lost Period was certainly present, but Carissa recalled Riesbyfe remembering a man known as "Albert Wesker" before, who was believed to have gone into hiding after the Crossed Incident, the earliest recorded Murder Game, for a small while, and would not re-emerge until the Fusion Incident. The possibility was always there that he acted behind the shadows during The Lost Period, but to Carissa, the most likely scenario was...

There was more to the origins of the Murder Games than initially believed.

"... I see," Carissa sighed, putting a hand on her hip, "Indeed, even that gives little to work off of, but we will continue to look into the situation, and hopefully, eventually return you home. I have a feeling that... our worlds are connected in some way."

"Oh? What makes you say that?"

"Call it... a woman's intuition. Surely, you must feel it too?"

Riesbyfe remained silent for a moment again, before letting out a small, amused breath. "I suppose so, in some strange way."

"Indeed," Carissa nodded, before clearing her throat, "In any case, I shan't remain any longer. I have matters to attend to promptly, if you do not mind. Good day, Ms. Stridberg."

"Good day, Lady Carissa," Riesbyfe nodded in return, and with that, the red princess was off, leaving the knight by herself again, all alone.

Yes, at this very moment, Riesbyfe Stridberg was not only out of time, but she felt alone in all the multiverse. Symptoms of each other.

She could only hope that one day, the truth would be discovered.
