Share her birthday. With a cat. Evelyn looked at Watson when prompted, so taken off guard by the suggestion that at first she had no reaction at all. Anthony and Garrett were bouncing off of each other's energy, like usual, and she was only just beginning to formulate why it would be strange when it finally hit her just how funny it was. It was the sight of the strawberry hat, probably, that pushed her over the edge.

Luca had turned in his seat to see what Anthony was showing them and only turned back at the first little sound she made, looking perplexed even as it bubbled over from a small chortle to almost a full belly laugh. Surprised, at first, he started to smile just watching the way she put a hand over her mouth at first, and a little more as she dissolved into fully covering her face. It wasn't that she didn't smile or laugh on normal days, but it was the way it seemed to have caught her so off guard. He didn't think he'd heard her laugh so hard before, and something about it made him feel warm and happy inside. He found himself reaching over the table to pull gently on one of her hands, wanting to see her. She was only just beginning to stop when he did it, her fingers curling around his rather than pushing him away, and she brushed delicately at the tears that had gathered at the corners of her eyes.

"It's perfect," she managed breathlessly even through the last vestiges of laughter, a bit pink in the cheeks but smiling still and shaking her head at the absurdity of it all and her own reaction. "You- You have to get it."

Watson startled for a brief moment at the outburst, ears going back and eyes dilating, but moments later he relaxed again and swished his tail. Then he trotted over, strolling up to Evelyn and sniffing at her curiously, as though wondering what had happened. There were tears, but not of pain; he hadn't seen a human crying from laughter before.

But for the other two humans, Evelyn's laughter was contagious. Anthony's face broke into a grin before he started cracking up. And Garrett chuckled too, blushing and trying to ignore the way his heart fluttered at the sound of Evelyn's laughter. He didn't think he'd ever seen her so happy. And if she thought the strawberry hat would be cute on Watson, maybe she'd get a kick out of a matching hat for herself, too. He smiled to himself and decided to keep that part a surprise.

"Glad you like the idea," Garrett announced once everyone had caught their breath. "Now that that's settled . . . can I show Anthony how air mattresses work?"

Anthony gasped and set his phone on a nearby coffee table. "Oh! Yeah!" He sat up and grinned, pushing curly hair out of his face. "You're sure it's okay, Evelyn?"

Evelyn's face was a bit red, she thought, her skin warm from both the laughter and from the embarrassment for being so ridiculous in front of people. Part of her wanted to hide herself as if she should feel shame, so used to keeping her every moment perfectly composed as she had become, but the sound of others' laughter around her was a warm, gentle reassurance. Sure, it had been silly to laugh so much at such a small thing, but she was with people she trusted more than she had trusted anyone in years. It was a strange revelation, in that moment, considering how close they had all become in such a small amount of time. It was all right, she told herself. It was all right to let herself be seen.

Shaking off the lingering embarrassment as best she could, Evelyn reached down to give Watson a few scratches to reassure him she was all right and finished carefully dabbing away the lingering tears in her eyes. "Oh, yes - the mattress," she said with a little cough to compose herself, giving Luca's hand a squeeze as she got to her feet to let him know she was all right when she let go afterwards. "Here, let's set a few cushions down, then aim for the couch."

Given their relative size difference and the firmness of the air mattress, she didn't think Garrett would launch Anthony too far, but it was better to be safe than sorry. The coffee table was out of the way already, so she just set down a couch cushion where there was a bit of room Anthony could fall into that wasn't the couch itself or the pull out bed, and retreated back to Luca's side for a good view.

"All right," she said with a smile when everything was ready, leaning lightly against Luca's chair and putting one hand on his shoulder to reassure him even as she got her phone ready with the other. "We're rolling, Garrett. Shall we count to three?"

It was as they reached two and Garrett got ready to jump that the dots finally connected, and Luca let out a soft 'Oh' as he realized what was about to happen. Like balloons. If you pushed on one end, the air moved to the other.

It was all Anthony could do not to burst into giggles all over again. He scrambled onto the mattress, settled in at one end, and kicked his legs gleefully while watching Garrett with his neck craned over his shoulder.

And Garrett couldn't help but feel a rush of sympathy even while he rolled up his sleeves and prepared to jump. Anthony had every reason to be fearful, and paranoid, and he'd spent many months looking over his shoulder. But here he was doing it only for the pure joy of seeing Garrett's expression - no fear whatsoever of what might happen when the man launched him off an air mattress. And everyone else was sitting by with cheerful excitement. He'd do everything in his power to never break the trust he'd fought so long to build, either with Anthony or anyone else in the group.

He smiled back at Anthony and then glanced over to Evelyn to nod. "Ready! Let's count. One . . . two . . ."

Anthony counted with them. On three, Garrett lunged and flopped onto one end of the air mattress with a heavy thump. And Anthony went sailing through the air, squealing happily with legs and arms flailing. He eventually crashed into the couch and the pile of throw pillows waiting on it. His limbs splayed out across the furniture when he managed to land upside down, and he laughed and opened his eyes, struggling to right himself but only because he couldn't catch his breath. "Th - that was awesome!" he burst out. "Luca, do you want to try?"

Garrett chuckled and pushed himself off the air mattress, brushing his sleeves off with a satisfied grin. ". . . Only if Evelyn says it's okay. I think she'd rather keep her air mattress intact."

Evelyn made sure her camera work was steady, enough to follow Anthony's short flight path to the couch, and she gave a little laugh after she'd stopped the recording, absently sending it to the three of them as she tucked her phone away again in her pocket. Luca had flinched a little at the way Anthony was thrown forward off the mattress, but relaxed with a relieved little huff when his friend landed safely. Evelyn thought the small smile he managed afterwards was a sign of growth. Just weeks ago, she was sure seeing something so quick and dramatic happen would have stunned him quiet for much longer.

When Garrett asked if he wanted to try, Luca made a slight face as if the very thought worried him, and only shook his head in mute horror. He did not want to get thrown into the couch, not only for his own safety but because he wasn't sure what his Shadow would do in response and he didn't want to break Evelyn's things accidentally.

She only laughed gently and gave him a little pat on the elbow. "It's all right, you don't have to. Here, if you want to you can sit on the end and I'll just give it a little push so you can feel it move. No flying."

For a moment she thought that wouldn't even convince him, but after a pause his curious side won out and he walked hesitantly over to sit on the edge of the mattress. When he was settled she went to the other side and just leaned on it a bit with her hands, giving it just enough of a push that it made Luca lift up and then back down a bit. The surprised look on his face was worth it, though she knew air mattresses weren't toys.

Garrett smiled gently and waved a hand. He'd been about to assure Luca he didn't have to, but Evelyn spoke for him, and he relaxed further and gave her a grateful look. And when she offered to show Luca how the mattress moving felt, it was Garrett's turn to pull out his phone. He carefully recorded the pair and chuckled when Luca went stiff with wide eyes at the motion.

"Isn't it so fun?" Anthony asked, rolling himself off the couch and stretching. "Oh! Evelyn, do you want a turn?"

"I think you might like it! We can't offer it to Watson, he might get spooked and claw the mattress," Garrett realized. "But you could go ahead and give it a try, Evelyn." If nothing else, he hoped at least the suggestion would help her realize she was allowed to have fun. After knowing her for weeks, he was starting to worry that she only saw herself as a protector and helper; it was rare she seemed to do anything for herself. Maybe her found family could change that.

Evelyn only held her hands up in surrender at the dual offers, shaking her head with a little laugh. "No, no, that's all right. That's really a male pastime, I think." She would've said she had no interest in breaking bones, but didn't want to make Luca any more uncomfortable about it all. "And don't even think about launching poor Watson. We should really air it up the rest of the way anyway."

It didn't occur to her at all, given the way Insight had never worked on Garrett, that he might think she was unhappy, or never had fun. True, most of the things she did were for others in some way, but she had lived alone for so long that simply being in the presence of people she could say she trusted was a form of fun on its own. To relax she would usually sit down with a book and a hot drink, or go for a little walk somewhere peaceful, or even a drive. All of those things were things she could do with Luca now, or with the others if she didn't feel quite so much like being quiet. It was strange, at times, having constant company, and occasionally tiring. But she was happy.

Luca bounced a little on the edge of the mattress, just testing the way his weight shifted, and only startled when Evelyn turned it on so that it started to fill with more air. It was strange the way the tension changed as it filled up, even with him sitting on it, and he pushed at it with his hands as if to test the difference as it went. When it stopped, he tilted his head a little, curious. ". . . Fast."

"Isn't it?" Evelyn asked with a little smile, finally urging him up so she could lay down a blanket. "Faster than trying to blow up balloons, hm?"

It gave her a little warm feeling in her chest at the small smile he gave her, quite obviously thinking back to the 'birthday' party she and Garrett had thrown for him. The pretty balloons he'd hung had stayed up until they deflated.

The detective couldn't help but snicker. "Not to worry. I wouldn't launch Watson. I don't think he'd like it, anyway." He beamed while he watched Evelyn finish blowing up the mattress while Luca sat on it. They both looked so at peace. Especially when Evelyn mentioned the balloons. He couldn't help but think back on the birthday party himself, and how far Luca had come since the day they'd saved him.

Maybe Luca felt safe and grounded enough for Garrett to focus a bit more on learning about Evelyn. Especially now that Luca had Anthony and Watson to spend time with.

Garrett cleared his throat and leaned back against a wall, doing his utmost to appear casual. "Balloons are always a fun time. Speaking of fun, um - what do you like to do for fun, Evelyn?" While he was a detective and had every opportunity to search for clues as to what Evelyn might find fun, in this case it just made more sense to ask outright. She wasn't a case. She was a person. A wonderful, beautiful person.

Anthony eventually slid off the couch and made his way onto the mattress with Luca. "Hey! Want me to read us a story?" he offered.

Evelyn only raised an eyebrow at Garrett's insistence while she switched on the mattress' pump, as if to challenge the idea that she would actually believe him. Truly, she was sure he wouldn't do it for risk of hurting poor Watson, but she was sure the thought had, at the very least, gone through his head already. Boys would be boys and all that.

She ignored the strange tone to his voice as she laid out a blanket on the mattress for the under layer, since sleeping straight on it could be cold, distracted by being careful to have it land behind where the boys sat instead of on their heads. She could fix it later. But when he said her name her attention drifted back with a soft hum of question, thinking for a moment to realize what he'd actually said and looking almost startled when she had.

"Me?" She asked, for a moment pausing with a second blanket held in her arms and beginning to flush the faintest shade of pink. She didn't usually feel so flustered so easily, but being singled out and with the thought of their impending date in mind she felt inexplicably nervous. It was ridiculous. "Do you mean outside the house, or . . . just in general?"

Somehow telling him she liked to draw felt silly, but even as much as it could be involved in serious matters she really did enjoy sitting down to sketch without purpose now and again. At the same time, she couldn't help worrying he thought she didn't like spending time with everyone, when she so often turned down joining in on their activities in favor of being able to observe, simply because she enjoyed it but also because it let her keep a better eye on Luca.

Luca, for his part, only looked down at the mattress when Anthony sitting still made it move a little, then at his friend himself once he'd refocused. For a moment he only looked thoughtful, hesitating on simply saying a mostly neutral 'okay' when Anthony was trying to ask if he wanted to. Everyone was always asking what he wanted, it was just still hard telling them. He was trying. He knew he was supposed to be trying.

Finally, after a few long seconds to think it over, he gave a little nod, almost shy at the agreement, and started to get to his feet with a little point towards the hallway where his bedroom was. "We can pick." If Anthony was going to do the reading, he could at least be the one to pick what they read.

Anthony smiled warmly. "Sounds good!" He wasn't sure when the mental shift had happened, but when he got to his feet and followed Luca, he was following his brother. "Do you want to read out here with everybody, or read in your room? I'd be happy either way."

Watson flicked an ear. When he realized both Luca and Anthony were on the move, he yawned and stretched dramatically. Then he hopped down onto the floor and trotted after the pair with a meow.

Garrett quietly watched the trio head off, and then glanced back at Evelyn with a smile. "In general," he replied. And he didn't mean to keep talking, but somehow the words spilled out anyway. "I just want to make sure you have a chance to do fun things, too. You're always so focused on everybody else. But you should get a chance to relax and enjoy yourself from time to time, you know?"

He rubbed the back of his neck and blushed. Was he being too forward? Or maybe he just didn't understand how Evelyn worked compared to other people. Not yet, anyway. Hopefully she'd give him a bit more information. Just enough so he could help her be happy.

Decisions, decisions. Life was full of too many decisions and he wasn't used to making them. It was nice, sometimes, being able it decide things for himself, but it was hard, too. Was it hard for other people? If it was hard for them, too, he felt bad always making other people make choices, but it always seemed so easy for everyone else. Maybe it was just him that was broken.

"Everyone," He managed after a moment to think, frowning a bit still as he tried to determine if that was the right choice. It was more open in the living room, and he liked being next to everyone. When Watson followed them in, he crouched down to give him a few pets. "You can pick."

His small collection of books was slowly growing; some Evelyn had given him the moment they'd come home, and others she'd picked out for him while they shopped or looked at things online. He had more he could read on her phone, and now on his, he supposed, but he liked the paper ones too. He liked them all, so Anthony could pick whatever he wanted to read. Maybe he would know more what everyone wanted to listen to.

Something in her chest felt warm but tight all at once, like the idea of anyone caring enough to ask what she wanted was too much in a myriad of different ways. Did she seem unhappy? She knew she was often tired, but did it look from the outside like she hated taking care of everyone? She couldn't know for sure, she supposed, but the fact that Garrett was concerned over it was . . . touching, she decided. It had been a long time since she'd had anyone worry about her or what she wanted.

"Oh." She managed softly, eyes drifting away even as she tucked a bit of hair back behind her ear, the set of her shoulders visibly bashful when she clasped her hands together. "I don't mind, just watching. . . I like to see you all happy." But that wasn't what he was asking, and after a moment she forced herself to swallow her pride and just answer honestly, without thinking any of it was foolish. "I like to do quiet things, I suppose, like reading or sketching. I started to dabble a bit in watercolors, a while back, but . . . it's fallen by the wayside lately." She managed a little smile at that, a shy sort of tilt to her lips. "I do enjoy visiting places like aquariums and museums, or finding new cafes or restaurants to try. I haven't been to an amusement park in ages - but that's a double edged sword for me, sometimes."

Going somewhere crowded only upped the chances that Insight would keep her distracted, or else hand her information she would rather not have. Maybe it would be easier if you held my hand, she thought with a flush, but knew that something like that would have to wait for a long time yet. If they were somewhere crowded she would want to keep her ability tuned to Luca, whether he was at their side or not, and if the moment couldn't stomach the idea of both of them going somewhere without him. Some day. She promised herself. Some day he would make enough progress to be fine on his own, and she wouldn't have to worry so much.

"Sounds good to me," Anthony agreed at once, smiling warmly. He had no way of knowing how much of Luca's personality was actually Luca and how much was trauma. But as far as he knew, Luca seemed to be a quieter sort that enjoyed small group activities. And as excitable and outgoing as Anthony was, he found he was starting to enjoy being in a small, close-knit group as well.

He knelt down near the bookshelf and hummed softly. "Let's see . . . so many choices, so little time . . ." he murmured to himself. But he was in the opposite of a rush. He scanned each title from a distance, picked out a few books to look at or skim through, and put them back to look at a few other ones.

At last he found the antique book with Watson on the cover - at least, the black cat that looked like Watson. He smiled and held it out gently towards Luca. "Can we read this one? I think we'd all like a story about a little black cat."

Garrett's eyes twinkled when, eventually, Evelyn began to list off a few things she enjoyed. Reading. Sketching. Watercolors. Visiting aquariums and cafés. Quiet, peaceful outings that sounded fun to Garrett, too. Then he chuckled when she called amusement parks a double-edged sword. "I agree with that. Very fun, but very noisy. Maybe we should go once later on, once Luca has more confidence. I know Anthony would be over the moon."

He strolled over and sat down on the air mattress. "Everything else sounds fun. And like activities we could all enjoy. Do you have watercolor supplies on hand? Maybe tomorrow after our date, we could all try some water colors."

Luca was content, listening to Anthony talk quietly to himself while he chose a book, just petting Watson and letting the cat climb up to his shoulder when he wanted to. Once Watson was settled he got back to his feet, and after a moment of just looking at the book Anthony held he did finally give a nod.

"Evelyn says books are meant to be read." He said, tone a bit strange as if reassuring himself that it was okay, and absentmindedly reached out to run his fingers over the embossed cover before pulling his hands away. "I like this one."

It was a bit old, and maybe a little more fragile than his other, newer books, so he had been nervous to touch it too much at first, but Evelyn had told him it was okay, just like she always did. Books were meant to be read, so he was allowed to use it for what it was for. If it got old and cracked or a page tore, they would just do their best to fix it, and it might look a little strange but it would still read the same. He liked that, thinking if something broke it didn't mean it had to be thrown away, that he could try to fix it himself, even. Maybe, some day, he would get to fix himself too.

Evelyn couldn't help a soft sigh at the idea of amusement parks, though the thought of Anthony at one did make her smile a bit still. When he sat she took a moment to fix the blanket where she'd kept it tucked out of the boy's way and sat delicately down next to him so she wouldn't bounce the mattress too much.

"Ah, well," she hesitated, wrinkling her nose a little at the idea of everyone painting together not because she didn't want to do it but because she hoped he wouldn't think poorly of her for being stingy. "Perhaps we stop buy a store and get a few supplies before then, so there's enough to go around. I may or may not have bought them as a little present to myself and splurged a bit on the good stuff."

She hoped it didn't make her look like a curmudgeon - or, at least, more of one. It just probably best if they grabbed a few cheaper things for everyone's first time experimenting with painting, so if it was all used up haphazardly it wouldn't be her stash of 'good' art supplies. Those, she was a bit ashamed to say, she had hidden away in her closet so even Luca didn't use them, and instead gotten him different pencils to practice with. When he was a bit better at not breaking the tips by pressing too hard, perhaps she would let him try out her other things.

Their date was another thing entirely, the reminder of it putting a nervous but pleasant little flutter in her stomach. In all the chaos, she'd nearly forgotten about it, and despite all her assurances thinking too hard about it did make her a little nervous. It had been a long time since she'd let someone in romantically speaking. Even if she worried about tainting their current relationship if things didn't work out, she was still glad deep in her heart that it was Garrett.

Anthony smiled gently. "That's a good point. Books are definitely meant to be read. And we'll be very careful with it," he added. He got to his feet, and then strolled after Luca on the way to the living room.

"That's very understandable," Garrett replied with a warm smile. "It's the same way I let Luca use my old detective supplies, but kept the ones I currently use mostly out of reach. Maybe we ought to stop at a dollar store and get some. Oh! Or, if you like, you can use your watercolors and the rest of us can use markers and crayons. I know I wouldn't mind."

He fell quiet for a bit, swinging his legs back and forth. He was just about to ask Evelyn about their date the next day when Anthony, Luca, and Watson returned.

"We're back!" Anthony announced happily. "You all ready for a story? How about you all get snuggled up, and I'll sit across from you all and read to you?" he offered.

Garrett fought the blush out of his cheeks and cleared his throat. "Yes. That sounds nice," he decided at last. He reached for one of the nearby blankets, making himself comfortable on the far right side of the mattress.

Evelyn gave a soft sigh of relief, glad he understood rather than think she was being selfish, but shook her head at the idea of everyone doing different things. "No, we should do it together. We can stop by a department store tomorrow and get some crayola watercolors or something." It would be nice, making art together. She found herself looking forward to it.

Reassured by Anthony's promise to be careful, Luca followed contentedly after with Watson riding along, but after a moment to consider sat himself down on the couch with Anthony instead of on the mattress with the others. ". . . Can I . . . sit here?" He asked, quiet and timid though not as much as he had once been. ". . . I want to see."

Evelyn couldn't help a little smile at that, warmed as always to see him using a bit of free will, and after grabbing a pillow for herself did deign to settle in with Garrett at her back, lying on her side to see Anthony and Luca sitting together. It was nice of Anthony to offer to read to them, but she supposed he was just following Garrett's lead like he did in most things. Whatever the case, he was a good, generous young man, and she was happy Garrett had found him in time to rescue him from his wretched family.

Garrett tossed his head in a nod. "Deal," he announced. "I think maybe we could go after lunch, if that works with everyone."

He couldn't help but chuckle when Luca decided to sit with Anthony and left him and Evelyn on the mattress. "I feel like a kid again," he announced. "I haven't been read to in years. This is really nice, Anthony. Thanks."

Anthony was delighted, both by Luca deciding to sit beside him and by Garrett's comments. He patted Luca's shoulder and nodded. "Of course you can! I'm always happy to be by you." Then he glanced at Garrett and giggled. "Glad you're already having a good time, Garrett."

Watson made his way to the top of the chair. Then he delicately stepped across Luca's shoulders and curled up on his neck, purring softly.

"Aww! Hang on, let me snap a picture," Garrett murmured, pulling his phone out. He angled it so he got Luca, Anthony, Watson, and part of Evelyn's face if she happened to turn the right way. "Cheese!"

"Cheese!" Anthony replied, beaming. And after the picture, he opened the book and nodded lightly. "Everyone ready to start?"

Luca smiled a little when Anthony patted at him, relaxing as he started to settle in where he could see the pages as Anthony held the book open. When Watson came to settle in he leaned his head gently against the cat's side, looking at Anthony when he said 'cheese' and smiling in an almost confused way at the strange word. Was he supposed to have said it too?

Evelyn didn't turn to look at the camera, just smiling a little at the boys and knowing it was going to be a very cute photo of Anthony with Luca quite candid at his side, as he usually was. While he was getting more used to pictures, he didn't always react in time and was often looking somewhere away from the lense, but she liked the little peeks it gave her into what he might have been thinking in the moment. Amused by the friends at his side, both cat and person.

"Ready when you are," she said with a little smile, content where she'd settled when usually she might have felt nervous with Garrett at her back, though she knew they weren't close enough to touch. Listening to Anthony read was a bit like seeing a younger version of the detective, she thought. And really, Luca did look at him with a similar amount of stars in his eyes.

The detective nodded and fluffed his pillow dramatically. "Go right ahead, Anthony. We're listening."

Anthony giggled and opened the book. "All right. Once upon a time, there was a little cat . . ."

He read the story for a good half hour before glancing up and noticing Garrett had fallen asleep. The detective was curled up on his side with his arms around his pillow, breathing deeply. "Aw," Anthony murmured. "Maybe we'd better pause there for the night." He set a bookmark in the story, and set it aside on an end table. "Where do you want to sleep, Luca? You can pick your spot on the air mattress first. I like any of the spots," he added. He didn't want Luca to worry about whether Anthony would feel pushed out or not.

Watson was still purring softly. But when Anthony got to his feet, the cat stretched, arched his back, and hopped down to trot over to the air mattress. Then he lightly hopped up into Evelyn's lap and rubbed his face against her arm. He had a feeling Luca would pick a spot close to her, and this way he could be by both of them.

Despite being a bit uncomfortable leaning over to see the book better, Luca was quiet and mostly still as Anthony read, just listening to the sound of his friend's voice. It was easy to ignore the passing of time, picturing the story as it was read in such a calm, safe place. He was almost startled when it ended, Anthony's voice changing a bit as he stopped reading and started just speaking, and had to take a moment to look around and think about the question. The air mattress was interesting, but cold, and it moved a lot. He wasn't sure if he would be able to sleep on it even if he was capable of sleeping that night, so after a moment he pointed to the couch even though he did like sleeping next to the others.

Evelyn, though she'd been a bit sleepy while listening, didn't knock out as easily as Garrett did, and was just sitting up when she ended up with a cat in her lap. "Oh, Watson," she scolded gently, doing her best to be quiet and not move so much it would jostle Garrett. "I have to go change. Go keep Garrett warm."

She gave him a few scratches behind the ears and shooed him gently off so she could stand, giving a little stretch and yawn. "I'm going to go wash up. Why don't you two set up the couch while I'm gone, hm? And remember to brush your teeth before bed."

She would join them after she'd taken off her makeup and put on sleep clothes, so she would let them sort out who slept where before she came back.

Anthony nodded when Luca pointed to the couch. It made sense. Maybe Luca was afraid of being flung off the air mattress, or didn't like the texture, or was afraid of waking Garrett, or any other reason. "Sounds good. Uh - would you rather I sleep with you on the couch, or with Evelyn and Garrett on the air mattress? I don't mind either way."

And when Evelyn headed off to get her makeup cleaned off, he waved and smiled. "Okay! Will do, Evelyn!" He made his way over to the couch and started pulling it out to transform it into a bed. "Hey Luca, could you go on the left side and press down the mattress? It kinda sticks there a bit." Whether Luca wanted to share a bed or not, he was going to make sure the couch was fully set up and comfortable.

Watson eventually made his way to Garrett, where he curled up on the detective's stomach with a deep, long sigh. Garrett was still fast asleep.
