Welcome to the world of Mythos, everyone! Here's what you need to know.
It has been one year since Ragnorok. The world is still recovering and most regions might not ever be the same. Greece has lost Sparta, and thus it's best warriors, to monster attacks. The Norse Alliance has completely collapsed and every island is invading every other. Midgard island has completely crumpled. Rome is facing more and more border attacks from the Evolved, a group of anthropomorphic wolves, led by Fenrir, that claim superiority to the human-dominated nations. The gods of the Norse recently reincarnated and are weak. You and a group of comrades are employed by the five governments to combat symptoms of Ragnorok. Here's the full details:
The nations:
Nile
The Kingdom of the Nile (Nile): the lands surrounding the Nile river from end to end. Ruled by Ra before Ragnorok, now fractured between Set and Horus. In a state of civil war but since the leaders can't kill each other for the sake of Divine Order (and because Neith won't allow it) they can at least create policies that they both adopt to mark it the law across the entirety of Nile. Pantheon: Egyptian. Largest city: Memphis. Capital: Cario.
Notable places in/around Nile:
The Desert of Chaos: Sahara and Arabic desert in our world
Sub Saharan Africa: unknown. Not many return although most describe a savannah with constantly shifting tribal alliances.
Memphis, seat of Thoth: the largest city in Nile. It holds the largest library in the world and is considered the center of the scholarly world. Representatives of the 5 nations (Thoth, Athena, Minerva, Odin, and a knowledge yokai) meet here annually to discuss and spread the advancements and achievements of their nation for the good of all. Writing was invented here, as were the standard Mage’s Staff. This is known as the Council of Wisdom.
Cairo, the capital of Nile and the seat of the pantheon. It was made the capital
Giza, valley of the Per Ankh. The entrance to Egypt's school for mages hidden between the feet of the Sphinx
Per Ankh, the House of Life: Nile’s school for mages and priests. A huge cavern where magic-enabled kids from all around Nile and veteran mages gather to learn, teach, and live.
The Duat: Nile’s magical dimension, layered underneath and around Nile. The River of Night, Underworld (home of Osiris’ court), and demon world are found here.
Culture: fierce and warlike, the Nilians are independent and powerful. Since Set, god of Chaos, rules half and Horus, God of War, rules the other, the people of Nile self-identify with either leader, either organized chaos or extreme self-sufficiency.
Greece
The Confederation of Greek States (Greece or Greek Confederation): Much larger than Greece is today. It encompasses Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Crete, most of the eastern Mediterranean islands and coast and the northern portion of the Mediterranean coast bordering Rome. During the long winter before Ragnorok, the Greek city-states and colonies came together, forming a new, united Greece. Loosely ruled by the Greek pantheon but individual states are left to govern themselves. Greece is only two years old. Largest city: Athens. Largest city-state: formerly Sparta, now Athens. Capital: Olympus. Pantheon: Greek.
Notable places in/around Greece:
Sparta: Ragnorok caused the fall of Sparta to unknown aggressors, possibly sparti (long-lived and practically invulnerable skeleton warriors). They seem territorial and will not leave Sparta except to hunt dragons. They reproduce via planted dragon teeth.
Athens: the Greek center of knowledge, religion, and art. Easily the most beautiful city in Greece and the location of the Greek Board of Magic. The Board of Magic certifies Greek mages, who are all individually trained.
Belares, the border village. The name comes from two war deities who supposedly fought to a stand-still here. Bellona and Ares. Also known as Bellus. This village exemplifies the difference between Greece and Rome as it is right on the border between the two. The only border in the world.
Olympus: the Greek “capital,” where the gods are located. All vast mansions, vast temples, beautiful parks, and Olympic-sized egos.
Erebos: The Greek underworld, ruled by Hades. There are five sections(listed from best to worst): Elysium, The Isles of the Blessed, The fields of Asphodel, the fields of Punishment, and Tartarus. Connected to Yomi
Culture: lively and trusting. Olympus is home to the gods and the city of Olympia is at it's base. The city is highly sacred but not very large. Each state has it's own thing, but the real standouts are the former state of Sparta for warrior-centric culture and the state of Athens for wisdom-centric culture.
Rome
The Holy Republic of Rome is an orderly but corrupt state. Many of it's gods are of Greek origin. It was a Greek colony started by Aneas, son of Aphrodite. Later, it withdrawed from the loose alliance that was the Greek city-states and colonies before Ragnorok. Almost one hundred years before Ragnorok, it formed it's own small country before conquering the Latin peninsula and adopting the language. It then went on a conquest to unite all of the lands west of Greece and succeeded. It's road system and organization is unmatched and it remains the oldest continuous nation in the world. It is harassed by rogue Evolveds to the north under the banner of Fenrir, Ratatosk, and others. Biggest city: Rome. Capital: Vatticus. Pantheon: Roman
Notable places in/around Rome:
Rome: a bustling city, the center of the economic world. All international goods flow through Rome at least once.
Vatticus, the Holy City. A section in the City of Rome containing the most important temples and a portal to Olympus. The Pontifex lives here.
Tiber River: flows through Rome. It's Rome's primary port.
Belares: Half is in Rome. See above.
Pomeranian line: a line around Rome. Inside, weapons are not permitted. On the Tiber, it is gates. Patrolled by Terminus, God of Bounderies. He also patrols the border of the country.
Culture: Romans are very rigid when it comes to rules but some officials are very corrupt. Rome is very organized. They are also very militaristic. You will only rarely see Roman mages, as there is so mage school here.
The N.A.
The Norse Alliance (or World Tree Archipelago) is a collection of islands in a loose tree pattern. On the largest island, Midgard, lives mortals. In the northwest of that, under a mountainous island live dwarves in Nifl. Southward lies a volcano chain. Muspellheim, home of the fire giants. Northernmost islands, called Niflheim, are home to the ice giants. In the west lies twin islands, home to the Aiser and Vainr families of gods. Eastwards lies the island of Elves, Alfheim. It is in the N.A. that was hit the hardest by Ragnorok as Odin and Njord, leaders of the two god tribes, struggle to regain control two years later.
Important places in/around the N.A.:
Asgard: home of the Aiser gods. Their most important gods died in Ragnorok but have been reborn. There is a magic school here
Vanaheim: home of the Vainr gods. Their most important gods died in Ragnorok but have been reborn
The Isle of Heather: Fenrir’s home. Ragnorok started here and spread. It is said that his son released Fenrir here.
Alfheim: an island of light and air. Home of the elves. The best mages in the N.A. train here.
Nidvallir: an island with barely a beach. It is mostly mountain. Inside the mountain is an immense city, home of the dwarves.
Culture: Every island is very patriotic and prone to war with another. The Aiser especially.
Oyashima
Oyashima (the Islands of Nihon or Shinto) is a truly unique nation. Known as the Land of the Rising Sun, it is by far the easternmost nation. Located in the Sea of Nihon, it is here that spirits and the humans mingle most freely. Largest city: Edo. Capitol: Kyo. Pantheon: Shinto.
Noteable places in Oyashima:
Kyo: the capitol and center of the spiritual world.
Edo: the center of military matters and home to the warrior school.
Miajima: a secondary center for spiritual matters and a magical training facility.
Yomi: the Shinto Underworld. Connected to Erebos.
The Heavenly Plain: an island in the clouds where Ameterasu rules supreme.
The Spirit World: not separate from the human world, but certainly inaccessible. Yokai reside here. Accessible via Torii portal or through the Duat.
Culture: the Shinto are very big on respect and purity. Every part of Shinto culture has it's own place in the line of respect and each custom reflects this. The Shinto have developed Torii gates, a way to purify land and travel to the spirit world.
The Wilds Between Gods
This is the uncultured, large strip of land where Fenrir fled. It extends from real-world Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary to the eastern edge of China and the norths of Norway and Russia. Despite it's massive size, the same number of people live in Nile and Greece as the entirety of this no man’s land. The people here are tough. To live here, you must be able to hold your own inna fight with monsters from across mythology, including hostile yokai, gorgons, fire giants, and seropards. Life here is tough, wherever you are. But life persists.
Fighters from each of the nations have unique traits. N.A. Berserkers are extremely strong, agile, and unpredictable but almost completely mindless in combat and just as likely to attack comrades. Ninja from Shinto are divine-backed assassins, but only selectively. If you have a taste for fame and frequent killing, this job isn't for you. Samurai from Shinto are able to take to magic better than most, but they are slow-moving because of heavy armor. Roman foot soldiers work very well with comrades of any nation, but are ineffectual alone. Fighters from Greece are naturally quick and strong but lack formal training since all of the best fighters (i.e. spartans) fell over two years ago. Nilians are versatile combatants, easily picking up any weapons and using them proficiently after only a few practices. Fighters from the Wilds are strong and quick in wit, reflexes, and foot. Unfortunately, they are not able to deal with magic very well. At all.
Magic is supercondensed light taken from the environment and stored in the mana orb, located in the crook of a mage’s staff. Magic runs out in the shade. Illusiomancy, or creating illusions, is one of the hardest types of magic because it requires a control of the photons that most can't achieve. The easiest is pyromancy because it means creating sustained heat through friction, easily generated by rapidly spinning large clumps of photons in a circle around each other. Pyromancy is self-sustaining and thus is one of the most useful and the most common magic. One person can only learn one form of Greco-Roman magic (-mancy) Nilians learn a few different types but mostly focus on one. N.A. magic is mutually exclusive from each other from healing to reality bending to seeing into the future. Shintonese magic is specifically summoning. Sometimes, you can even use divine artifacts from the Kami to fight. Elemental magic is used to control a single substance or element. Scrying uses a smooth, clear surface to see or communicate with other parts of the world. Seeing the future is reaching through time to grab future photons and does not allow for sound. Summoning and teleportation requires that the atoms in a body be converted to photons and the photons be converted back wherever you want to end up. Summoning is a purely Shintonese trait.
How the nations met: Greece was the first. It inadvertently founded Rome. Rome knew of Greece from the beginning and Greece heard rumors of Rome. Roman exploration finds Nile and Alfheim but they don't act. Greece finds Nile and starts trade. Alfheim joins the N.A and soon N.A exploration finds Rome. They start trade. A Shintonese from Oyashima defies tradition and respect and walks through the center of a Torii gate, ending up in the Daut. They come out, finding Memphis, Nile, and quickly head back to Oyashima. A Greek travels to Erebus, revealing that Yomi and Erebus are one and the same. He accidentally summons Izanami. She reveals that Oyashima exists and a Greek-Nilion joint expedition lead by Jason of Greece sail for Oyashima and find it. They set up a teleport in Memphis, Athens, and Edo. Rome and Greece war for a while until they stop. Rome shares the existence of the N.A. almost 150 before Ragnorok. Now, there are portals in every major city connected to the Yggdrasil network making travel easy.
