It was unusually cold that morning, when Lira woke up.
The sky was gray with clouds, and the wind was cold as ice.
It whipped against the trees, making it sound as if something was scratching at the windows,
begging to be let in.
When she awoke, she wasn't quite sure why she'd woken up, exactly.
It wasn't any certain sound, but she felt in her heart that she needed to wake up.
A voice in the back of her head told her something was wrong.
Her heart was pounding against her chest, and she could feel the beat in her head.
It was deadly quiet in her house that morning, and cold.
Usually her mother had the stove on, and it was warm.
That was one sign something was wrong- the cold that crept into the halls and rooms,
the sound of the wind coming through the cracks.
"Mama?" Lira called quietly, as she padded down the hallway.
No one answered her.
In the kitchen, the sink was filled with dishes from breakfast, which was still on the stove, burnt to
a crisp.
The plates were set out for eating, but no one was there.
Mama's apron was on the back of the chair, as she usually put it when she was done cooking.
"Mama?" Lira called again, looking around.
She shivered in her long t-shirt.
There was one room off to the side of the kitchen, and sometimes Mama fell asleep in there.
Deciding this is what had to have happened, Lira walked in confidently, ready to shout and scare her silly mother awake.
She had a bright smile on her face as she crept into the room.
In the rocking chair, her mother was sitting.
It wasn't moving, the chair, that is- and that was a bit odd.
Even when Mama was sleeping, it was rocking a bit.
Lira jumped in front of her mother and yelled; "Mama! I caught you!"
But her mother said nothing.
In fact, her mother's eyes were open, as was her mouth.
But her eyes had a glassy look to them.
"M-Mama?"
Lira said quietly, full of fear now, as she touched her shoulder.
And with that small touch, Lira's Mama's head fell clean off, and onto the floor.
They say the shriek could be heard for miles.

That's my opening paragraph for the role play I'd like to do.
I'll be playing Lira, who is now seventeen.
For the last two years of her life, she's lived in a mental institution, and now she's been pulled out by her father,
who's living in the city.
She hasn't seen him in years, and she's been out of society for two years as well,
and before that, she lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere.
Now, brought back into the city, she's being forced to face people, her past,
and eventually, the truth of what happened to her mother.
