Eureka Academy: First Semester [SU/OOC]

Not open for further replies.
As a final start time, I plan to have the main RP up on the weekend before January 13th, 2014. I give that time frame because I know that these signups are over the holidays. However, I've also got a character minimum that if reached, will allow me to start the RP ahead of that date. Those numbers are 3 staff/professors and 10 students. If those numbers are reached before 1/13/14, then the RP will start shortly thereafter. As it stands, our ratio is 2/4 and I've another staff member in the works on my end and I've got PMs flowing about another student character, bringing our hopeful total to 3/5 which means we're well on our way.

At this time I'd also like to say that these signups are going to stay open the entire time - it's easy enough to say that your character has been attending classes thus far or you had a substitute taking over for your class while you were on important business (or just be a half semester professor). Likewise feel free to make another character or two if you feel you can handle it.

That makes sense.

I would love to make another character. So many different possibilities I'd like to explore. but A) I've already made one and I should give other people a chance.
B) Even if I've got lots of free time right now, when school re-opens, I'd be swamped. I'd hate to make more than one character, post shoddy writing because of time constraints and other issues and let everyone down in the end. I'm fairly certain I can play one character decently (okay, maybe a bit more than just decent.) even if I'm busy.

Well like I said, feel free to make another character if you feel you can handle it. If that's later on then so be it.

Name: Orin Sylvari

Age: Actual age - 252; Appears - 20

Race: Incubus

Class: Scythe Spelblade

Title: Student

Sect Study: Dominus - Yellow

Appearance: Orin has a slim body, but it is noticeable that he does, in fact, have muscle on him. He stands at about 5' 10". Orin has medium length, stark white hair that falls haphazardly around his head and he has very, very pale skin, a result of where he grew up. The only thing that isn't monochromatic about him are his glowing red eyes, the only sign that shows how inhuman he really is.

Orin wears very monochromatic clothing. He has a black V-neck T-shirt that goes down to just after his hips. He wears a white leather jacket that goes down to just past his shirt. The hood of his jacket has two layers of fur on it. The inner layer being black, while the outer is white. He wears baggy white pants and a pair of black and white shoes that are in immaculate condition, given all of the things he's been through in those shoes. He also has a black necklace that is practically a collar. Dangling from this on a little hoop is the symbol and color of his Sect.

Personality: Orin is almost always seen alone. He sis very quiet and will avoid interaction with as many others as much as possible. He is very quiet and would rather be sitting alone either with a book, or just sitting there staring off into space than talking with other people. He is probably the most socially awkward person anyone would ever meet. This is probably because of his upbringing and where he spent all of his time. (More info in the History portion.) Sure, he'll talk to people if they approach him first, but he won't approach anyone else, or keep a conversation going longer than absolutely necessary.

Now, that is how he is to people he doesn't know. It is like two sides of a coin. When he actually knows you, he is more open and happy and will actually smile. He is a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky, and, as some call him, bubbly. He always wants those close to him to be happy and never wants to see them with any emotion other than happiness on their faces. He always does what he can to help a friend and keeps a smile on his face whenever they are down. Though, as he does this, he has a terrible habit of keeping his emotions inside, feeling as though he doesn't want to bother anyone with his problems. Although he has incredibly dashing looks, a result of him being an Incubus, he never uses his inborn abilities.

Weapon(s): Scythe. Only weapon and can conduct his magic. The handle of his scythe is about as long as Orin is tall, so he holds it in the middle and carries it perfectly when not in battle. He is always carrying his scythe wherever he goes. The top of the blade is a shiny black, while the bottom of the blade is a beautiful, shining silver and is incredibly sharp. (I added the picture so you could get the full detail of the scythe without me butchering it as it tried to explain it myself)

Abilities/Magic: Orin's magic/abilities are all, in some way, part of destructive magic, rather than the more conventional magic types used by most Spellblades. Destructive magic is, obviously, all about the destruction of your enemies. It is all big booms and exploding death. There is no way to only target one enemy with destruction magic, which, in turn, can cause just as much damage to the user and allies as it does to the enemies. Destruction magic is very powerful, but takes a lot of talent and practice to use and it takes a major toll on the user.

-Blast: The most basic of destruction magic. It is the weakest spell, but can still cause some damage to enemies. Orin can discharge these blasts through his hand or his scythe. He has been known to rapid-fire them in groups of threes. This is because it is all he can handle without overexerting himself and it takes a ton of a lot more energy than it takes to fire off just one.

-Blast Wave: (Only usable with his scythe) Orin holds the blade of the scythe close to him as he charges energy into the blade. He then slams the blade of his scythe completely into the ground. As he does that, a major wave blasts out from where the blade hit the ground towards the enemies, leaving a massive crater in its wake.

-Burst: Exactly the same as Blast, only this spell acts like a shotgun-burst skill. Orin rapid-fires these in groups of threes as well.

-Instituo Signaculum: (Can be done either with hand or with scythe) Orin's hand, or scythe blade, glows a fiery orange color. He then either punches or slices the enemy and practically plants a bomb on the inside of them. The bomb will explode after about 10 seconds. He only uses this when he is in a fight with a group of enemies.

Note: From here on are the abilities/spells that Orin can't use without causing some serious harm to himself, as he hasn't had enough training to deal with them properly.

-Sonic Burst: Exactly like Blast Wave, except that he can use his hand or his scythe to do this. With his hand, he charges up energy in his hand like Blast Wave, then he launches it at the enemy through the air, creating a crescent of explosion energy at the enemy. With his scythe, he charges the blade of his scythe with energy and slashes through the air with it, creating the same crescent of explosion energy at the enemy/s.

-Meteor Strike: (Only usable with his scythe) The blade of his scythe glows a fire red color. He jumps in the air, scythe held high, and brings it down into the ground with the force of a meteor strike, creating an explosion of fire, which engulfs him and all in a 30 ft. radius.

-Crepitus Signaculum: This is Orin's final, and ultimate skill. This skill is the strongest skill of all destruction magic, and is the most fatal to even the most trained. The user cuts his or her finger enough to draw a steady stream of blood. They use this blood to draw a glyph onto something that acts as a trip mine. The glyph then disappears and becomes invisible to those who aren't trained in destruction magic or are trained to see these things. Then, when the glyph is walked over/passed it explodes, using the users body and energy as an extra fuel source When they do this, they essentially sign their bodies into the spell, making their bodies as a catalyst for the explosion. Meaning: The stronger the user, the stronger the explosion. Which, in turn, means that since the body is used in the casting, it is used in the execution, dealing just as much damage to the enemies as it does to the user. It doesn't matter how weak you are, this skill is by far the strongest and will kill a lot no matter what, but there is almost a 100% chance of death on any who use it who aren't given the proper training for this specific skill. Orin hasn't used this skill, of course, but all who know destruction magic know how to use this spell.

History: Orin was born into the Sylvari family. He was the child of Vaeril and Alea Sylvari, King and Queen of the Gelida Kingdom, the most powerful kingdom, on the Hibernis continent, the northernmost continent, which is home to many, many races of demons, on Corinith. This kingdom is focused in the center of the continent with the capital city, Nix, sitting perfectly in the center of the continent. This made Orin the Prince of the kingdom and the heir to the throne. Well, he would have been if he didn't have an older brother. Ilbryn. His older brother was the exact opposite of what an older brother should be. Instead of being helpful, protective and supportive of his little brother, he was cold and uncaring at all. He never tried to give his brother any help in anything he did and was always looking down upon him. Because Ilbryn was so much older than Orin, his parents were always fawning over their 'perfect son' instead of paying attention to Orin. Because of this, Orin stayed in the library for a lot of the time, reading all he could. He was specifically interested in the massive collection of books that were all about theories and dealings with destruction magic.

When he found this collection, he was rarely found out of the library as he sucked up all of the information like a sponge,. He eventually found an empty room in the castle and began teaching himself how to use destruction magic. This did cause some holes in walls and floors and the like, but they were always repaired without any question from anyone. He was getting slightly better over the many years he practiced, but it still showed how little he really knew about how to use his magic. This lack of knowledge had Orin seeking out a proper teacher. It took a while, but he had eventually found another person who had actually had some minor training, but it was more than what Orin had. He had trained with this man for a while when he was told that using a weapon could help greatly with the execution and the effectiveness of his magic, so he then began looking around for a weapon that he thought he would like. He went back to the library and began reading all about weapons nonstop until he read about an odd weapon called a scythe. It was a weapon that was very difficult to master, but he wanted to try it nonetheless.

He again started looking for a teacher and actually found one. Granted, this teacher was out in the middle of the woods that surround Nix, but she was proficient in using a scythe. He trained with her and his magic teacher for many years to come, perfecting each and every skill that they could offer. It took about 50 years of combined training for him to finally surpass both of his teachers. After this happened, he decided that he would leave his home city and continent as he searched for more insight on how to perfect destruction magic and scythe using.

He left his home without any people trying to stop him, his family still not paying attention to him at this point. He left to the major continent on Corinith and decided to take on some mercenary work as he searched around for a proper teacher. Taking a lot longer than expected, Orin found himself looking for work more than he was looking for a teacher so that he ma actually survive. After about many years of his mercenary work, he eventually got a job from this man who needed an escort back to his home city, which was about a week away. During this time, the man had more than enough places to see the skills that Orin had possessed. When they finally reached the man's home, he told Orin about Eureka Academy and that he would be able to hone his skills there. He told Orin that, with his skills, there would be no problem with him getting into the school. Orin accepted hastily and was enrolled into the school the very next semester.

Orin has been taking in everything that he has learned during his years at Eureka. He is really good at what he does, but he is far, far away from being perfect at them. So he is going to learn and practice as much as it takes so that he can be the best at what he does.

I might make a new character later on. As the story progresses, would we get the chance to play as a villain?

@The Cheshire Cat welcome to Eureka. An incubus, eh? I like how you've taken a different route to the traditional 'sex magic' one.

Absolutely. I mentioned before that some of the missions would come from within Eureka Academy. While it was implied that they might come from professors or the headmaster, it also implied that you could make up your own. In that case, you would indeed get to play the villian. That said, as arcs progress, we can most certainly have an arcwide villian controlled by another player. Don't be afraid to share ideas for arcs. As it is, I've got the majour storylines for about 4-5 planned out but there's always room for more.

I doubt this will be relevant, but just to let you guys know: I will be in San Diego from tomorrow until Sunday and will be unable to check or post in the thread.

seems very interesting. just a quick question. what defines rank within a sect? It seems the implication was that the higher your rank, the stronger you are, but do the ranks favour power over skill?

if a hypothetical student was born being capable of casting that world-ending spell mentioned in the first post, but had little to no control over that power, would he be assigned to a black rank because of said student's overwhelming power, or assigned to white rank because of his lack of skill in controlling said power?

Rank within a sect is defined by both power and skill and that is inseparable; to be black rank you have to not only have black rank power but matching skill to control it. Of course that only relates to power and skill. I had intended to say this after the first semester when it would come up story wise but I'll do it here. At the end of the semester are advancement exams, conducted by professors within your Sect of study. While the actual content of the exams are variable, they are generally overseen by at least three professors, most of the time singularly within your Sect though Dominus does occasionally bring in Magia and Arma to assist. The overseeing professors will give individual assessments of your capabilities to the Sect Master who will then determine whether or not you advance based on the assessments. These advancement exams are not mandatory - students sign up for them at the end of the semester; if you think you're ready then you can sign up. The entrance exam is similar in style and the notes from each advancement exam are kept and compared to the most recent to see that you are in fact progessing so that it's not a singular event.

In your hypothetical situation, no they would not be black rank. In fact, they would be placed in white rank with a restraint on them so that they can't have access to that power; temporarily of course - we will have a staff member shortly who has the capability to do such a feat. Anything with that destructive power has to be monitored - we don't want to destroy the academy and create a black hole between two planets now, right?

*nods* ok, i figured that this would be the case, i just wanted to make sure before i started working on a character. thanks for the feedback.

one more question (mostly because i;m juggling etween a few possible character ideas, so i want to cover my bases before i get to work) a character who was a tinkerer and fought not by their own means, but via remotely controlled robots and gadgets they developed, would be in which sect? Arma, or Ultris?

They would be in Ultris.

If no one else is interested in the position, would it provide more roleplay/engagement opportunities if Lorren were to be Sect Master of Ultris?

As for more roleplay oppourtunities, not really. And there's the issue that yo9u've only been teaching for two years. Highly unlikely you've got the equivalent of tenure.

Yeah. That would have to change. But if it won't really create any new opportunities, I'll just stick with the current position.

Sorry for taking so long to get my second character up! It somehow keeps getting deleted or not saved properly and I end up having to start over or redoing certain details ;.;

Happy New Year to everyone. Just a friendly reminder that we've got less than two weeks left before the hard start to this RP for those thinking about joining or wanting to make a second character.

Happy New Year! I'll be quite busy this week, just letting you know.

Amal banu Shahnaz Naji

Age: Eighteen, but looks be in his early twenties.

Race: Djinnling

Class: Djinn- Creatures made before humans from smokeless fire, believed to be the purest of fires, possessing the capabilities to physically interact with objects. Having free will, they can be good, evil, or of neutral benevolence. Most are gender fluid and take on a feminine or masculine appearance based on how they are feeling.

Title: Student

Sect Study: Magis - Blue

Appearance: Normally Djinn stand an easy six to seven feet tall, but having muddled blood, Amal's height falls shy at 5'10. His otherwise dark skin has a unique, silvery blue undertones emphasized by certain lightning and brought out by the numerous intricate, yet, unfinished tattoos decorating his skin. Amal's eyes are narrow and rest under hairless eyebrows, but his eye color is uncertain as a protective dark blue layer of film obscures them, giving them an interesting sheen. He has no body hair to speak of. In addition to the tattoos, Amal also has various piercings including mismatching ear piercings, a septum nose piercing or a 'bull piercing', two eyebrow piercings, a cheek piercing, snake bites, and a belly button piercing. A chain sometimes connects an ear piercing to the nose piercing.

The Djinnling is most commonly seen in more traditional attire during school hours. This may include belted shirt-dresses or ssedria vests and potur trousers on his more masculine days, and a simple top and wide taffeta trousers on his more feminine days. After school and otherwise, He is seen in multiple stylish outfits more fitting for the modern day era. One day the Djinnling could be dressed as a punk, the next, a complete prep. Wearing ear cuffs with some outfits is not out of the question. There will be days where he paints his hands with henna dye.

Personality: Being raised in a culture where its rude to step away from someone, Amal has no sense of personal space. When talking to someone it isn't uncommon for him to be touchy-feely but only when his having more of a masculine day as his culture frowns upon touching and 'staring' at a female. The exception is anyone who is not on friendly terms with the Djinnling. Amal's culture also values relationships over all else and thus frown upon openly refusing a request from a friend; however, yes is not a confirmation but a maybe while 'as God wills it' may mean no. If the phrase 'do this for my sake' is ever used, it means the favor is of dire importance and should not be turned down. He highly values the use of words as well as honor and dignity, and view promises as sacred. To break an agreement with Amal will not go over well. What also sets Amal's culture apart is his people's lax view on time. Lateness is inevitable.

Rather formal and reserved, but not shy, Amal would rather stand back and watch things transpire and observe how they transpire than actually participate. If he has questions about something, he won't ask. Instead, he'll search for the question himself or try to figure it out by making accusations and reading between the lines. It takes dire circumstances to get him to ask anything. He's quite independent and has a hard time relying on others when the situation calls for it or working in groups, especially if he doesn't know the other people too well or they have done something to break his trust. Additionally, he can be quite vain. Sometimes he'll find himself judging others by what they wear like his mother had taught him or being picky about what article of clothing makes up his outfit as well as fuss over his piercings.

Weapon(s): Keeps a dagger on his person for self-defense purposes.

Abilities/Magic:

  • Genuëre- Can freely take on the form of either a man or woman but has been known to take on the gender preference of his love interest.
  • Wellentiä- Has the ability to visit the dreams of those around him but rarely can he choose who's dream he's visiting or when. Once he's in a dream, Amal can twist and morph the dream as he so desires. Can only be used if Amal is sleeping.
  • Smeügphosis- Allows him to morph his lower body into a smoky substance that allows him to levitate above the ground and glide over gaps.
  • Psyche Agent- Can conjure up a purple smoke screen that can induce hallucinations; has the same effects as a psychedelic drug.
  • Sleep Agent- Can conjure up a blue smoke to induce drowsiness.
  • Toxic Agent- Can conjure up a green smoke to poison victims. Depending on intent effects can range from minor illness to fatality.
  • Psychedelliüm- This not only allows Amal to sense the inner most desires and fears of a person of his choosing, but also allows him to twist the way one perceives reality and can make it seem like their greatest wishes or their worst nightmares have come to life. In other words, a fancy illusion that induces temporary madness. Must be in contact with victim; preferably their temples.
History: Growing up in the way Amal did wasn't what one could describe as easy, especially with how different he was from everyone else. After all, having blue eyes with no pupil and no whites showing, and having dark skin that shown the slightest hint of silver in the sun wasn't normal for a human. His father wasn't a permanent member of the 'household' and came and went so often Amal had convinced himself his parents were merely playing a complex game of hide-and-go seek. Sometimes Mother would find Father first, other times it was the other way around. The young Djnnling was raised in a traveling caravan of gypsies and being the only child of his age around, he mostly kept to himself and if he wasn't keeping to himself he was spending time with the adults troubling himself with their all-important matters. Not that he was outright aloud to but what they didn't know didn't hurt. He was seven when a change in pace occurred, and when Father found Mother again (he was really good at that it seemed; Amal kept count). There was some arguing, some reassuring, some stress, and some hugging. It was his father who realized they were being spied on and clued him in on what was going on.

It was weird suddenly having a new living arrangement, but he supposed if it was going to be his new life style for another seven years he would soon adjust. His father, like his mother, also traveled around. But unlike his mother who thought the way one dressed was important and taught him what to say with which article of clothing, his father believed in less tangible values. He taught Amal how important relationships were and how valuable words could be. He was taught the opposite of 'actions speak louder than words' and how to be the voice of reason. He was also taught how to read people; how to tell what kind of person they were or what intentions they may have by the way they carried themselves and even structured their sentences. But above all else, his father taught him the basics of how to use his powers and for what, something his mother could never do not because she was human, but because she didn't know her child had inherited his father's gifts. It was a wonder how he managed to spend his childhood as a boy without so much as a shift in appearance, but his fascination with female clothing did make her question certain things...

When Amal was thirteen, he decided to run around as a female, much to his father's surprise. Since he (she?) was bare of all hair, he experimented with wigs but found they irritated his scalp too much. The boldness didn't make him feel so feminine and he returned to being a male for the time being, lapsing into an angst sort of phase. His clothes became darker in color and he gained an interest in Gothic jewelry, especially in earcuffs. His first official piecing, and definitely not the last, was a singular lobe piercing in his right ear. He then proceeded to get an eyebrow piercing but the artist was a little confused on where to put it at first.

It was two months before his fourteenth birthday did his father take him back to his mother's. Apparently the counsel wanted Amal to be presented to them. Amal didn't even know there was a council! For good reason. Having relations with a human was considered dishonorable and his father had been banished from his tribe upon announcing he'd be keeping in touch with not only the mother of his child, but his child as well. The request struck a heated argument between Amal's parents but in the end, it was his choice to make and he chose to go to the council if only to see what they wanted from him. Apparently, over the course of fourteen years the council had become more accepting of Djinnlings, as they called Amal, and they wanted to show this by holding a becoming of age ritual for him. Though, the ritual, he would soon find out, carried on into adult hood. From that day until his fourteenth birthday, Amal spent time with his father's tribe studying under them and becoming more acquainted with kids his age. While encounters were awkward at first, he slowly eased into everything. He also met and befriended a few 'females' who pulled off the hairless look quite well, but it was older 'females' - well, older Djinn's in general, who often caught his attention. The intricate tattoos that adorned their skin absolutely mesmerized him much like his father's own did. He received his first tribal tattoo when he was fourteen years old, marking his trek into adult hood.

He then returned to his mother as a female, much to her surprise; something she would never left his father live down even if it was Amal's choice.

After sometime, Amal's family eventually moved to live with the tribe to build a more solid life. There were some awkward moments when his father became his mother but they didn't seem to last long. Other than that, life was peachy for the most part until Amal's fifteenth birthday. Eureka Academy was brought up as it seem that the elders were not sure what else to do with Amal education wise. In order to continue his 'be coming of age' his only choice was to attend Eureka and find his own path in life. That was three years ago.
