An Inkarnate and Pahn Collaboration

  • Genres: Post-Apocalyptic, Science Fiction, Horror
    Posting Expectations: Adept
    Theme: Ware Yami Tote
    Players: 2

Special thanks to Pahn for putting up with my indecisive, procrastinating ass.

Embyro is a collaborative setting set in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world that takes influence from horror, science fiction, and action academy tropes and genres. Immediate influences for me are Black Bullet, Shiki, Parasyte, and Ergo Proxy.

  • [roleplay=yellow]New Eden is the greatest city on Kronos. It isn't arrogance. Even the other city-states agree, for they recognize that they will never be able to reach the heights of prosperity, affluence, and relevance that we have attained. [/roleplay]New Eden is the largest city of the planet of Kronos.

Seven hundred years ago, the world ended. But humanity, as tenacious as they are, refused to give up and persevered where their deepest fears and anxieties told them they would fail. In the present age, that of which the descendants of Kronos' survivors live in to this day, the world is a very different place. New Eden is a city that represents hope, resilience, and opportunity. The men and women who live underneath its massive walls and pylons receive the finest of education and fortune that can be given to them. It is the most prosperous of the post-calamity nation states and by all appearances is a monolith that can be only described as a perfect utopia.

But New Eden is not the paradise it has been built up as. The city is sick.

The city's government is controlled by the New Eden Defense Council (NEDC), a group of affluent men and women who use their wealth, privilege, and opportunity to make New Eden appear as the utopia it is known to be. They control who gets in and out of New Eden, who knows what knowledge they 'deserve' to know, and most of all hides the truth of the past, present, and future from the citizens who deserve to know that they are all at risk.

The few critics of the NEDC suggest that the government is hiding something crucial from them and painting the world to be much prettier than it really is. But those who ask too many questions often don't realize the lengths the NEDC will go to maintain their image. Especially when they are holding onto information that would destroy the illusion they have maintained for centuries. But is this secret something that should be exposed or kept secret?

    Time will tell.

  • [roleplay=yellow]The most dangerous precedent is what secrets the public should know, but would not know how to comprehend. If we were to announce to our fellow Edenites that the city was infected with ghasts, how do you think they would take it? Would you want to take responsibility for onset paranoia and chaos?[/roleplay]
The Calamity of 2041 was an apocalyptic event that led to the destruction of the known world of Kronos in the 21st Century. Humanity survived it, but only at a cost. The effects of the kroytrium-empowered explosives led to a development that was worse than death – it awakened something that the NEDC recognizes as "the calamity virus", though the specifics of the virus are still under-known. What is known is the virus has awakened something that has infected humanity. And the NEDC intends to keep it from being public knowledge on how it happened and why New Eden has not warned about it.

But what does the virus entail when it has been awakened? Why is it dangerous? What are treatment options?

Those are three rather large questions, but they do have answers. As for what the virus entails, that is a hard one to describe since each person who finds the virus awakening inside them of varying effects. The short answer is that it corrupts one's own self and mutates the body at a hyperactive rate, twisting bones, muscle, and brain to fit. Most people are turned into monsters that are lost to their madness, degraded to primal beasts that read out of horror stories. The "luckier" ones find their transformation into a monstrosity more subtle, allowing them to control what the virus gives them. There is no cure for manifestation. The only treatment is a kroytrium-enhanced weapon destroying the brain of the infected.

The NEDC classifies all of these infected humans by the codename "ghasts". They are the most dangerous beings on the entire planet and the NEDC, like other city defense councils, believe their existence must be kept quiet as much as humanly possible. It is not an easy task.

  • [roleplay=yellow]NEST responds to extranormal activity in the city. Extranormal activity that needs to be kept under wraps. Subletly is the most important asset in an NEST operative.[/roleplay]Otherwise known as the New Eden Security Taskforce, NEST is a division of the city defense forces that work to purge all ghast presence from New Eden. This doesn't just include specialized training to fight otherworldly abominations but also protects the city from discovering the truth behind the disappearances of former neighbors, friends, and family.

NEST agents have authority over simple defense officers that serve to police the public in matters of the mundane and criminal, though defense officers are kept entirely in the dark about what exactly NEST does. This can oftentimes lead into conflict between normal defense officers and NEST operatives, though it is often advised that agents avoid conflict with the defense officers. NEDC doesn't like people within their own ranks asking too many questions.

Which is one reason those who join NEST tend to be relatives of the inner circle or orphans that have been raised from a young age to understand the importance of keeping the knowledge of ghasts quiet. Raised, conditioned, and trained at a secret facility outside of the public walls of New Eden.

A facility known simply as EON.

  • The same stock rules apply for all of my settings, pitches, and concepts in addition to that of the host rules. Since this is a one-on-one collaboration I feel the need to spell it out is unnecessary. Especially considering I am writing with a member of the site staff, so, it kind of goes without saying.

Let's try to make something imaginiative, fun, and inspiring.
