EDWARD CULLEN

"Good morning, class. We have a new student with us today ..."

Edward had heard this introduction countless times before, but this was the first time he had heard it in Swedish. When their time in Forks had expired, the Cullens had decided that it was time for a change in scenery, therefore, they had moved to the cold and overcast Scandinavian region. Edward was looking forward to living in a new country -- one hundred years of America was enough for anyone. Rosalie did not agree, but like with so many other things in their relationship, Edward just ignored her.

Standing in front of a class full of Swedish teenagers, Edward felt somewhat comfortable. He was used to being the new student. He anticipated his time at this particular school to be the same as the time he had spent at every other school he had attended throughout his immortal life. He would attend for a year or so. He would graduate. He would pretend to be destined for a University far away, and then he would feign attending that university until Carlisle's colleagues noticed that he had stopped ageing. Edward was not dismayed or saddened by this process — in fact, he embraced it. In an immortal life, one likes to cling to normalcy when one could.

The teacher introduced him to the rest of the class. "I'm sure you will all make him feel welcome. Now, dear, take a seat next to Oliver. Oliver, you'll show Edward around today, won't you?"

Edward made his way over to the desk where the indicated young man named Oliver was seated. "Hej," he said, his Swedish accent flawless. He had learned the language thoroughly whilst they had been moving in, and at this point, he sounded like a native speaker.

The day started like any other for Oliver, just another day in high school. He woke up, got dressed, got to school, etc, mundane and predictable. He sighed a little as he came into class before moving to sit down in his assigned seat. Everything about school was routine and predictable, you almost could do it without thinking. Everyone piled in like usual, talking casually as they took their seats. But...suddenly there was a new face, he knew new face when he saw one and that was a new face. Suddenly he perked up a little, sitting up straighter to hear the teacher introduce him.

It wasn't often they got new students, it happened here or there but not a big amount. Especially not...well for lack of better words, really handsome new students. He could already tell this student would be well liked and popular in no time. It didn't take long for new students to find their place here usually, and the better looking your were typically the higher you were. While he was staring he heard people whispering around him, something about how there were five new students. Today was turning out to be an eventful day after all. His name brought him back to reality, looking up trying to process what just happened while Edward walked towards him.

Just when his brain caught up the new student was sitting down next to him. It was almost hard to focus around him, his looks were a bit distracting. "Oh-um h-hello," he fumbled over his words, face immediately going a bit red. Seriously Oliver?! You have just been given the chance of a lifetime and you fumble it like that!? "I'm Oliver, it's nice to meet you," he held out his hand to be polite, he always got a bit nervous introducing himself as his name wasn't common in Sweden,"Do you mind if I see your schedule? It'll help me show you around..." His mind was still wrapping around the fact that he got assigned to show Edward around today. He noticed the other's Swedish accent so he deduced he was probably a transfer from another high school somewhere else in Sweden.

As Edward began to converse with the student he had been paired with, the warm, meaty smell of blood emanating from the young man began to intensify. Edward deduced this to him being embarrassed. According to the minds of students he had come across in other locations, his looks could be quite distracting. If that were the case with Oliver, Edward would not be surprised. But when he looked in the mirror, he failed to see what his human acquaintances saw. Vampires only looked attractive to human eyes -- eyes that were blind to the true horror of their nature.

"Of course," Edward responded, once again in fluent Swedish. He reached into his pocket and extracted a neatly folded piece of paper with his schedule printed upon it, in conjunction with his locker number and network login codes. He handed the paper to Oliver with a small, friendly smile.

He had a nice scent. He was no singer, but his aroma was pleasant. Curious, Edward peeked at Oliver out of the corner of his eye, and focused his ability on him, attempting to connect to the channel of the boy's mind, just to see what he was thinking. Edward was incredibly surprised when he found that he could not connect to that channel. In fact, he could not detect it at all. It was as if there were no channel there at all.

Edward was shocked -- though his perfect poker face revealed nothing of that nature. He had never come across a person whose mind he could not read. He had interacted with people who had made it diffcult for him to do so, but those people had been vampires, who had had abilities that involved the mind just as he did. He had never encountered this with a human, and to say that he was astounded was an understatement. But he would have to remain curious. He could not simply ask Oliver why his mind was impenetrable.

Oliver quickly composed himself as they started talking. It would be even more embarrassing if the other caught him ogling him. It wasn't just the other's looks that distracted him, even though that was a big part, but Edward seemed...nice. He enjoyed talking to him which was surprising as usually he was introverted and preferred to avoid conversations. For a new student the other was surprisingly relaxed too, most new people-the rare ones they got-were at least a little bit nervous the first day. It made him curious of he had moved alot before.

"Thank you," he gave the other a small smile as he took the neatly folded sheet and started to look over it. He caught that small smile and couldn't help a tiny blush spreading across his cheeks. Even though he wasn't the new one he felt like he was with his blushing. Composing himself again he looked over the paper and was pleasantly surprised. "Hah...either they planned for me to be your tour guide today or it's lucky coincidence," he said with a small laugh,"Our schedules line up almost perfectly and your locker isn't too far away from mine. The only one that's different is your elective slot which you haven't picked what you wanted yet." Folding the paper back up he smiled at Edward before giving it back to him. It wasn't super weird that their schedules lined up, it wasn't a giant school so schedules overlapped occasionally.

"So...where did you move from?" he continued the conversation oblivious to the other's shock internally. It was clear he came from another town here in Sweden but he was curious. Especially with how easily he seemed to deal with being the new kid. "Did...did your siblings move with you too? I've heard a few kids talking about 4 other new kids..."he didn't like feeling like he was gossiping but he was genuinely curious about Edward. The class continued on pretty mundane, the exception being Oliver was completely caught up talking to Edward the whole time. Their teacher let it slide considering he was new and just made the day a study class basically. Before long the bell rung, Oliver looking a bit surprised how fast time flew by. "Oh time for our next class," he gave the other a small shy smile as he packed his stuff away,"We have 10 minutes roughly in between classes to get where we need to go next. It's usually plenty of time if you know where you're going." He stood up but as everyone hurried to leave he waited by his desk for Edward to be ready to go.

So they had almost identical schedules. Edward did not mind. He was not planning on making friends with Oliver -- even if the boy seemed kind, friendships with humans were not really an option for any of the Cullens. Not only was it a massive risk to the sanctity of their secrets, but it was just unfair to the humans, because before long, they would all have to move away. The humans would move on with their lives, get married, have children, have long and happy times, while the Cullens would remain the same. It was not an option for them to make friends. It was a lonely existence, but one Edward had become accustomed to.

The teacher allowed them essentially a free period -- strange, for the first day of term, but Edward was indifferent to the syllabus. He knew it all already, anyway. When Oliver asked where he was from, he answered, "I'm from America, actually. We moved here from Forks, Washington."

The class proceeded and soon, the bell rang, indicating the end of the period. Edward packed away his belongings and gracefully rose to his feet. Everything Edward did was graceful -- everything any vampire did was graceful, even Emmett, with his hulking muscles and large frame. It was just one of the many attributes the species had at their disposal to appear more desirable to the humans -- their prey.

They walked out, and the first person Edward saw was tiny Alice, who was skipping down the hallway to meet them with her hand in Jasper's. The taller male was following behind his mate casually. "Hey, Edward!" Alice called out in English. "Who's your friend?"

"Alice, this is Oliver," Edward said, dropping the Swedish and allowing his American accent to shine through. "Oliver, this is my sister Alice, and Jasper, my foster brother."

The teacher didn't normally allow a free period but this one tended to be a bit more lenient especially on the first day. Oliver was grateful since it meant he got to speak to Edward for longer. "We don't get new students very often so the school probably figured it would be best to match your schedule up with someone," he had a feeling he knew why he was picked. He was a pretty quiet student and didn't start trouble which meant he wasn't likely to start any fuss over having to show the other around. And they were right he didn't really mind showing him around at all so it worked out for him. When he heard he was from America he looked at him surprised,"I would've never guessed, your swedish is perfect, maybe even better than a native..." It was a little strange that the other's accent was even perfect, it was a hard accent to mimic. Most people that learned the language couldn't get the accent right.

As class progressed he continued to explain how things worked in the school. Telling him how the locks on the lockers could be a bit finicky sometimes. Never to use the bathroom near the chemistry classroom, due to their being this weird stench in it for years. Really mundane stuff, he probably didn't need to tell him but he enjoyed talking to Edward, it was like time just stopped when he talked to him. As he waited for the other to grt his stuff he made more conversation. "So are you more comfortable speaking in English? What made you family decide to move across the world?" people in Sweden didn't move alot, lot along did they have people from other countries move here. Most of the time people moved out of the country not in, except in the bigger cities, those had more foreigners. He followed him out of the classroom quietly, looking forward to his next class for once if it meant Edward would be in it.

A new voice caught his attention as soon as they left the class. He turned his head to find the owner of the sweet American voice was a small pixie cut hair wearing girl. Immediately he caught on to her holding the other guys hands, they must be two more of the new students. When being introduced he waved a bit shyly but smiled brightly. They were just as beautiful as Edward, well...personally Edward was more handsome to him but still they were unlike anyone else. "Hello," his Swedish accent was pretty thick when he brought out English,"It's nice to meet you Alice and Jasper. Did your first class go well?" He could tell the one named Jasper seemed a bit more reluctant to talk to he focused his attention to Alice, the more bubbly social one. They had time before their next class, and it wasn't very far from the current one so he didn't mind spending some time getting to know Edward's sister and foster brother.

EDWARD CULLEN

"I don't have a preference," Edward assured Oliver when he asked if he preferred to speak English. He had learned Swedish with such ease that he truly was unfazed by speaking it. One thing he was grateful for about vampirism was the keen edge to their minds, like a swift sword sharpened on a diamond.

Alice and Jasper had had no problems mastering the language either, but Alice still responded in English. Edward could tell, with his ability, that this was purely because Oliver had spoken to them in English. It made sense to respond in the language selected by the person they were speaking to, especially when they could speak both without any problems. "It was quite interesting -- I'd never studied a novel in Swedish before, so it's interesting to see how the terms and quotes change across a language." Jasper nodded to assert his agreement. What are you doing? he thought, glancing at Edward. Rosalie's going to kill you.

"He's just showing me around," Edward whispered, so quietly that Oliver could not hear over the sound of the students in the hall.

Indeed, Rosalie would heavily protest if he tried to make friends with a human. Rosalie was terrified of having to move around too much -- she yearned for normalcy, and strived to obtain it wherever and whenever she could do so. If they were forced to relocate, it would infuriate her. And Edward had learned over the years that it was pragmatic to avoid infuriating his adoptive sister as much as he could.

"Well as long as you're comfortable,, he smiled, it really should be a crime that someone could have as sweet of a smile as Oliver did. He had studied English since he was young so he didn't have a problem speaking in it if it would make Edward more comfortable. Sure his accent made him hard to understand at times and occasionally he fumbled over his words. Certainly he couldn't switch back and forth as easily as Edward seemed to be able to. Since the conversation now started in English he would just continue it like that to make it simpler on everyone, himself included. It was good for him to get some practice in on using English afterall, if you don't practice it's easier to forget stuff.

Hearing Jasper speak this time he turned to look at him. He was a bit surprised it was him that spoke, since he looked uncomfortable at first. Though that could've just been new school nerves, so Oliver brushed it off to continue the conversation. "Ah, I could see that, sometimes words translate over really weirdly. When I first learned English reading a book written in it was a nightmare," he said with a small laugh. It was pretty easy for him to talk with them, usually he was more withdrawn but he felt he got to know Edward a bit in class so he was less nervous when speaking to his family. Plus he wanted to make a good first impression and stumbling over his words or staying quiet wouldn't be a very good way of doing it. Edward's whisper to Jasper went by completely unnoticed by Oliver, who continued the conversation as if nothing happened.

"Do you two know where your next class is?" his head tilted just a bit as he asked that. They didn't seem to have anyone showing them around like Edward did, which was curious. Maybe they declined the offer to have someone help. But anyways, he wanted to offer his help just in case they wanted it. It wouldn't take much for him to at least point them in the direction of where they needed to go. His and Edward's next class wasn't too far so they could spare some time in conversation now.
