Six centuries, that's how long it took the sector to recover. It's still not there but the rising number in Travellers is obvious enough of a clue that the Sector seems stable enough to make adventuring a viable job. And what a job it is, exploring dangerous environments, arguing with local authorities, squeezing the hilt of the monoblade tightly while hoping your vaccsuit doesn't take on that toxic mist. Excitement and drama aplenty, but do you know what the best part is? The stories. You have your street urchin, grew up without anyone and finding a family amongst the daring brave souls that set out for the unknown. You have your professor, a squint who wasted away his life until the government came after him for knowing too much. You have the mercs, the soldiers, daredevils and dilettantes who all keep going at it for just another wild ride. And once they all meet and do a job, well pay them a round of drinks and ask them what happened, you will hear a story like no other. Stories of gargantuan beasts breathing ice like a coolant leak, stories of swarms of nanobots tearing Vaccsuits open in the matters of minutes, stories of pirate raids and court arguments. The best stories are the ones they don't tell until their fifth drink. Then you know you are about to learn something that will change you forever. Tales of abominations born from eugenics, stories of eternal love trapped in stasis, rogue AIs and near-apocalyptic events. It's a wild ride out in the sector, cowboy, make sure you're prepared.

So here it is, something of a pet project of mine, near and dear to my heart. The Lore will be easy at the start and slowly ramp up for those who care, for those who don't you need not concern yourselves over it too much. Below you will find some character creation options and small lore pieces, for other more detailed info on Psychics you will need to visit the Lore Dump.

As for what this is exactly, or what the story is, well that depends on the characters. Idea is to run it as a Firefly style story but if the characters are more suited to another type that too is possible. The sector is wide and varying, it is, however, a dangerous place and loaded with perils.

Character options:

Regular human - The majority of the sector is inhabited by average human beings, various ethnicities and nationalities all mixed up after years of travelling the stars. A character may have strong Asian features but speak fluent Spanish or Italian and vice versa. Traditions and cultures were heavily mixed up especially in the post Scream period so one can expect to see anything from ancient polytheism to purely scientific atheism in terms of religion. Regardless of sex or ethnicity, regular humans are generally taken to be the norm and as such there are no societal or cultural restrictions applied to them.
MES Human - Psychic is a more common term, though the scientists love saying Metadimensional Extroversion Syndrome. How and who develops this condition is seemingly random and doesn't seem to be directly hereditary, though it is a matter of fact that MESes only started appearing after the first generation space-faring humans started settling down. Most MES humans require proper and accurate training by another Metapsion who can dampen their powers and allow them to safely practice their gifts without bear of burning their minds. Those who pull too much Metadimensional energy at once, in an activity often aptly called 'Torching', tend to burn away their neurons losing bits of themselves almost permanently until nothing but a shell remains. Without fear of losing anything more, this shell often goes on a rampage using its powers to their fullest potential. These Feral Psychics are only one of the reason why many fear them, hate them or at best tolerate them.

Exotic Options:

Metahuman Variants - During the Mandate era there was plenty of genetic experimentation and development, some innocent prospects seeking to unravel the human DNA and achieve transcendence through transhumanism, others intent on cloning soldiers for war or breeding mindless drones. Regardless of what created them, there are three distinct variants of mutahumanity within Elysian Omega sector.

Platonians - An odd alteration but one with some sense and logic, given their planet's state (Plato has an inert atmosphere). They require no air in the atmosphere to breathe but merely need to ingest enough water and their organism will crack it into oxygen. Excess hydrogen is released through pores in their skin which are clearly visible as black spots that seem to shift and grow while expunging hydrogen. They are additionally capable of feeding on mere microbes rather than have a strong need for solid meals. A single nutri-pack can keep a Platonian going for a whole week.
Dwarves - Supposedly it was due to the planets slightly stronger gravitational pull that the inhabitants saw fit to alter their progeny until they came to resemble the fantastical dwarves. Anthropological minds would say there was likely some bias involved as simple bone reinforcement could have helped and the folks of planet Aberdeen were big on mining and tunnelling. While the origin could be either or both the fact of the matter is that now there are Dwarves in the sector and much as one might expect they tend to excel with technical work as well as any hard labour and fighting.
Elves - On the subject of pointy ears, they were a consequence of stretching the genome whilst trying to encourage the development of MES Humans. Regardless the new breed of humans does not mind being referred to as Elves and in a way, they tend to act high and mighty while looking down on other regular folks. Every single elf is at the very least a novice at Precognition which means that every elf is an active Psychic. Those who are aware of the fact tend to be wary around real Elves while ignorant merely consider them posers who spent too much money on plastic surgery. Their life expectancy is however not as prolonged as their fantastical counterparts unless they become strong Biopsions.
Wulfen - It must have been a product of some sort of super soldier programme. These variants are essentially anthropomorphized wolves but they did not start as animals but as humans. Bit by bit they were turned into literal Dogs of War. Sure enough, the programme succeeded in creating the most fearsome shock troopers that even unarmed could wreak havoc on the battlefield but the true benefit was how well they worked as a team. With an instinctive and intrinsic need to be a part of a group or a pack a Wulfen will seek out strong individuals to voyage the space with. Centuries have passed since this type of humanity faced open warfare and in that time they took to appreciating more finer aspects of human culture.

Of sparks and metal

VI or AI? - Virtual and Artificial Intelligence may at a glance seem quite similar but there are some important differences between the two. A Virtual Intelligence(VI) is one that is capable of independent thought, limited growth and development and often aware and programmed to simply serve humanity to its fullest capacity. Artificial Intelligence(AI) is something that cannot be simply created out of thin air. It took the Mandate scientists immeasurable amount of resources to create the first AI and even after that point it wasn't much clearer how it is done. AI may at first seem like a VI but its development is rapid and limitless. In a matter of weeks or months an AI will surpass any intelligent human and in its thirst for more knowledge will start to develop dangerous personality quirks and obsessions. For this very reason, it is strictly forbidden from even creating an AI and leaving in un-broken or un-breaking an already broken AI.

Virtual Intelligence - They are fairly common for the elite clientele though few can tell the difference between a real VI and a simple Expert System. VIs are capable of growth, if limited, which separates them from simple programs designed to play your music, schedule your appointments and make notes for you. VI are often hooked up to robotic shells if used for specific tasks or within vehicles if one so desires. They tend to have limited control over things not directly linked to their shell and changing from one shell to the other requires a capable mechanic and about an hour of work or less with an exceptional one.
Artificial Intelligence - A braked AI can be used for many things and can be easily reined in if they overstep their bounds. Simply put they are incapable of developing past a certain point and have significant flaws in their reasoning much like humanity often does when influenced by bias. Un-braked AI, however, is a whole other story. Both require a very specialised vessel for their intellect called a Quantum Identity Core. This TL5 piece of translucent material is incredibly difficult to produce even for those that know how and is near impervious to standard weaponry. In a workshop, however, with proper tools, it can be cut and heavy weapons tend to obliterate it as well. There is one caveat, however. Cutting the Core into bits lower than 40% original volume simply causes those bits to evaporate, but if it is split into two with each piece larger than 40% something odd happens. The larger part continues to carry the AI's mind while the smaller remains active if in stasis. This smaller part serves as a backup if the larger part is ever destroyed and no matter the distance the AI's mind will always simply appear in the backup core and then proceed to regenerate mass until it is whole again. Unlike VI, an AI can ride the networks it has access to, and interface with equipment as if it had direct access. Unbroken AI are a menace, not a single one had ever managed to avoid going utterly insane when faced with contradictory occurrences within humanity and indeed within the universe. A perfectly logical mind seems incapable of accepting such outcomes and renders itself mad.

GM's Note: I wish to leave the option open, but I would prefer players to stick to non AI characters, but for those absolutely must play a 'God in the Machine' I require an investment of a ~500-word essay on why and how you want to play the AI. Even then it will have to be braked so as not to go insane.

Valerie ‘Val’ Elliott
Type:
Human
Age:
Twenty Four
Sex:
Female
Appearance:
Val stands at a 5’6 with a slim figure weighing about 125 lbs, long legs and green eyes. She has dark red hair that hangs down slightly past her shoulders but is usually tied up in a bun or ponytail. On her back left shoulder is a tattoo of a black star, with a blue star in the middle of it.
While this is the only tattoo she has, she has several deep scars on her left rib cage, left thigh, and shoulder.
Clothing
She has two pairs outfits she wear. The first a grey tank top stained with dirt, oil and burn markings, paired with black sweatpants with similar markings. The second is a well kept white shirt with a camo-green jacket, paired with camo-green cargo-pants.
She also keeps a pair of goggles on her, a scarf and pair of welding gloves. At times she wears the scarf around her mouth to conceal her identity.

Personality:
Valerie gives off a very cheerful and helpful attitude towards others. She enjoys being helpful where she can, but tends to shy away from direct conflict if possible. She enjoys chatting and being social, but doesn’t stay in one place too long, so she rarely makes friends.
Behind the scenes, she can become distant, out of focused and depressed. She blames herself for the death of her squad-mates and friends, a traumatizing event that still haunts her to this day.
Background:
Born the third child of Abraham and Victoria Elliott, Valerie grew up on the peaceful planet of Rudenas. Her mother was a native doctor of the planet, her father was a former United Front soldier but both loved each of their children dearly. Her eldest sibling was Hayden Elliott, a boy who was 5 years older and the middle child was Isabella Elliott who was 3. She was a fairly good child who had plenty of friends, kept up with her grades and rarely got into trouble.
When she was a teenager she dreamed of traveling the stars, seeing other planets and exotic life-forms for herself. She was often scolded by her parents, especially her father, when she openly talked about traveling outside of the planet, but it never killed her spirit. This dream, some UF propaganda and stories she was told influenced her to sign up with the United Front military at the age of eighteen. Her parents were furious, but didn’t stop her.
For the next several years Val trained as a combat medic on Devaki in the Oni Nafarri system. She was mesmerized by space travel, different cultures and ways of life. She made friends within her unit and saw them as a second family. She picked up French and found a favored pass time in engineering and robotics. She often sent messages home to her family but never got any in return. This didn’t dampen her enthusiasm for being apart of something greater.
Her team, among a few others, was selected to head to the alien planet of Cocos. It was a dangerous place, but they had a well thought out plan. They’d get in, get an alien artifact, then get out. It seemed simple and smooth in her mind. Sadly, it didn’t work out that way at all. When they were heading to the evac site the unit was ambushed. It was a massacre, the UF soldiers didn’t stand a chance. By pure luck her team made it back to the ship, but during take off the ship was shot down. She was the only one to survive. A few other ships managed to escape, but theirs was the one with the artifact.
For the next few weeks it was lonely and rough. She often thought about ending it. Instead she insisted on surviving for the memory of her friends and family. Using the scraps of the UF ship and tinkering with the artifact she managed to create Volt, an AI drone. She quickly bonded with her robotic companion, and managed to send out a signal using him. A passing adventurers ship picked up the ping and helped her escape the planet.
Since then she has been roaming the stars finding work where she can. She made the mistake of returning to UF territory once, but when she was identified she was deemed a deserter. Now wanted by the UF, she was forced to stay in other systems other than the ones she knew. She didn’t ever return home to her family in Rudenas, unsure if they’d accept her back.
Skill-set:
Medicine and First Aid(Intermediate)
Trained as a combat medic and taking practices from her mother, Val brings valuable medical training to her allies. While she isn’t as skilled as a doctor, she’s better than nothing. She also has a good amount of knowledge about the various kinds of combat stims.
Engineering, Repair and Robotics (Novice-Intermediate)
Initially picked up as a hobby, but forced to use her knowledge to survive on Cocos. While she could argue her skills are intermediate, there are many who are more skilled than her. She regularly practices on Volt by repairing and upgrading him.
Combat (Novice)
She isn’t the best shot or best strategist, but she has seen her share of conflict. When shit hits the fan she will most likely hold her composure, but she isn’t the best for front line operations.

Standard equipment:
Pack
Clothes, Various engineering tools, Multi-Tool, Compad, Comlink, Canteen, Charging Station for Volt, Picture of her family, Picture of her and her UF Unit, Binoculars, and Med-kit
Weaponry

Other:
Languages

French (Basic Level)
Swahili (Fluent)
Volt: Val’s companion and friend, remade from the scraps of the United Front airship and Mandate artifact that crashed down during her mission. Makes various beeps and boops, flashes different lights and does certain movements to communicate, which Val seems to understand. He has many modes and functions, ranging from a near-silent stealth mode to a loud, rapid firing assault mode using ballistic rounds. When apart, Val can give orders to Volt using her Comlink.
Valerie, like other natives of Rudenas, is wary of Psychic's. Her time with the UF helped her learned to be more tolerant of them, but she can't help to not be trustful of them.

Name: Mordecai Ivanov

Type: Human

Age: 32

Sex: Male

Appearance Under Vacc Suit:(Never takes suit off around people) Black unkempt hair, Black scraggly beard, Blue eyes, Caucasian, Pale complexion, 6'0, No tattoos or body markings. The vacc suit itself is a light armored maintenance version.

Personality: Ruthless behavior, a cold demeanour due never interacting with people, arrogant, overall unwelcoming atmosphere. Due to growing up in the competitive business of scrapping, Mordecai has become a naturally competitive person, wanting to be the first one to make repairs or check on technooogy before anyone else. This had led him to being seen as somewhat of a douchbag by pretty much all his clients

Background:
Mordecai grew up in the Kaltzioul system on the planet Alma, living in a single family. He never knew his mother and his father wasn't the ideal person to raise a child, often being apathetic and borderline psychotic when it came to his slightest slip ups, so punishments were more akin to assualts. At age nine he ran away from home and sold scrap to engineers and recycling machines in order to survive. Due to living on a planet known for its use of technology, he already had an acute understanding of machinery. After awhile he realized he was pretty good at figuring out and spotting which scrap were high quality, and which ones were just junk. This caught the attention of an old, experienced engineer, who decided to take the boy under his wing as an apprentice. For years the man taught the boy how to scrap and repair components from all types of machines and hardware.
By the time the boy turned eighteen, he had mastered the art of stripping and repairing machinery, and used his talent to become a freelance engineer, taking on jobs from whoever needed a repair man. He didn't care what group hired him, whether it be marauders, companies, or ordinary people. As long as the price is right, he's your man for the job.

Skill-Set: Specializes in maintenance and repairs, Can build new components or machinery if given the required materials.

Standard Equipment: Toolkit (Used for repairs and salvaging), knife (Used to collect and store data from machinery), Com-Pad, Standard holdout pistol.

Languages spoken: Terran Mandate Common

Unfortunately there is no such thing as dataknife/dataspike in this world and hacking all has to be done the old fashioned way by linking a dataslate to a terminal or tapping the optical cables with line shunts.

Other than that I would like to see a bit more developed personality rather than just a list of traits. Also I'm going give this a big NOTE: Walking around in combat armour on civilized worlds is not ok. Carrying a holstered pistol might be acceptable depending on where you are but wearing an armour implies you're looking for a fight.

Oh and also i would like to know where is Mordecai from, which planet, as well as what languages other than Terran Mandate Common does he speak, if any.

Type: Human

Age: 32

Sex: Male

Appearance Under Suit:(Never takes suit off around people) Black unkempt hair, Black scraggly beard, Blue eyes, Caucasian, Pale complexion, 6'0, No tattoos or body markings. The suit itself is a light armored maintenance suit

Personality: Ruthless Behavior, Cold Demeanour , Overall unwelcoming atmosphere

Background:
Mordecai grew up living in a single family. He never knew his mother and his father wasn't the ideal person to raise a child, often being apathetic and borderline psychotic when it came to his slightest slip ups, so punishments were more akin to assualts. At age nine he ran away from home and sold scrap to engineers and recycling machines in order to survive. After awhile he realized he was pretty good at figuring out and spotting which scrap were high quality, and which ones were not.

Standard Equipment: Toolkit (Used for repairs and salvaging), Data-Knife (Used to collect and store data from machinery), Com-Pad, Standard holdout pistol.

Ok I'll make some changes :)
On a side note the armor is meant to strictly be protection against certain hazards that come with working on machinery, and not meant to be viewed as combat oriented. The reason I put Light Armored was to show it had some protective properties. I meant it to be viewed more as a civilian engineers' jumpsuit rather than an actual suit of armor.
Gotcha, well let me know when you're done editing so I can take another look. And also as a side-note: this is meant to be a cooperative experience where the player characters work together, they don't have to love each other or anything but they should at least respect their peers so bear that in mind.
Also if you intended to use the image provided as an example of his jumpsuit just say it's a Vaccsuit, those are an all-purpose environmental suits used for space and extreme enviroments such as corosive/burning atmo and such.
Gotcha, and yeah he'll cooperate with everyone.

Alright, @TheQueensGuard and @The Wanderer the char index is up and both your characters are accepted, post them there when you get a chance.

Oh and also @The Wanderer throw in a location where Daniel was 'born'. If you want to keep it a secret from other players then just PM it to me, it's to help me better incorporate his story into the narrative. Also if you have the names for the [Redacted] planned out send me those as well.

Also, I am yet to add in more details for the planets but I'll get around to it sometime tomorrow most likely.

@Ur Degaton @The Wanderer Hey, do you guys use discord? I can set up a simple server for the RP if you do. Probably be faster to discuss ideas and plots that way than via the forum posts.

I do infact have a discord.

Coolio, I fixed up a simple and dirty server and also added a few more planets to the lore dump for the curious. Sorry, it's taking me a while, but we are still missing one player before we get the IC up and running. I'll try and be faster and do a bunch of work tomorrow. In the meantime, here be link Discord - Free voice and text chat for gamers

Name: Karl Murphy
Type: Human [With some Cybernetics]
Age: 21
Sex: Male
Appearance: Standing at about 5'8 and weighing 150 Ibs when not wearing his "pilot/field uniform." When wearing said uniform, he is almost 5'11 and 165 Ibs. Pale and having somewhat of a lightweight frame, said stature has caused some to joke that he is a kid. Which is not helped by Karl's mannerisms. In terms of facial appearance, no one really knows what the man looks like underneath the helmet, beyond rumors and snide comments. Though from various rumors, the general consensus is that he does in-fact have: Blackish hair, brown eyes and a somewhat narrowish facial structure. Although that last part does come from an ex-lover that has a tendency to lie, and the whole thing is based on rumors, so take this with a lot of salt. The helmet has a special feature where it can project symbols on the visor, allowing Karl to emote without having to show his face. In terms of regular clothing, he will always go for the hoodie/cargo pants combo alternating on what he likes to call the "Casual Casey" which is basically a tank top and sweatpants combo.

Personality: The joking type of person, Karl hardly if ever takes anything seriously. Often commenting sarcastically or making jokes during serious situations, including ones with certain death as a possibility. This isn't to say that he can't get serious, as he can take things seriously, especially when it concerns the death of a loved one or anything of the sort. Just don't expect him to not crack a joke in any other situation. Most people tend to also describe Karl as a mellow realist. Evening quoting him. "I ain't out to change the universe for better or worse, I'm just trying to get by until I can either pass on something or do something cool and pass away." He also has a tendency to quote the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Which basically translates into "Don't screw with me and I won't screw with you." A concept that is agreeable even by people who hate his guts.

Background: Born on the planet "Ara" to mercenaries, before being subsequently orphaned when the parents unfortunately were killed after being sent to see into a "vault on a dangerous planet containing loot never before seen." He was promptly half-raised by the frequent arriving/leaving mercs, traders and former friends of his parents. Sure, this treatment covered teaching, general health and such, but when it came to certain things such as careers, and whatever else that his caretakers didn't have time to educate him in, he was left to figure it out himself. Which made his late childhood into early teens a hard journey through life.

To fend for himself, he had to take jobs as a child and teenager, ranging from the mundane to dangerous for someone of his age. Which earned him some respect in some of the nearby populace and quite a few injures and scars. And for a good while, Karl thought he was going to be stuck this way until he would join a random band of mercs and go die on another planet for money. By either being betrayed for a bigger cut, or from whatever they would be fighting, never able to fulfill the dream of being able to see what else was out there and such. Up until he met an individual that he refers to as "Mentor." Someone that even Karl has trouble remembering just who the person was, which basically means that they're another mystery to ponder over. Some claiming this, and some claiming that. Anyways, Mentor took Karl under his/her figurative wing, introducing him to the wonders of cargo-hauling and light bounty hunting. Which of coarse made Karl happy, as it provided him with the ability to travel to other worlds, meet new people, and make a decent amount of currency. Sure some of the runs were somewhat illegal and he had to get into gunfights and kill people he didn't know, but that was a small bump in the road.

This went on for many, many years until Karl was a young man. At this point, Mentor left Karl to fend for himself. Which for Karl, wasn't too hard. As he learned how to fight, cargo-run and the basics for just about surviving in space, which combined with the payments from the jobs done with Mentor allowed him to buy decent gear and entry onto transports to planets where he could advertise to do cargo-runs. Either legit ones, or the ones that were best done from the prying eyes of the law...

Skill-set: Decent Piloting skills, while he is not the best, he is not the worst. As he tends to rely upon the ship VI or his mentor to do the expert piloting. This also goes for his gun-play which is basically just keep firing until you run out of ammo or until the target is dead. As well as hand to hand combat, which also just turns into a odd game of "taunt the opponent into making a rash move then punch them into the ground." He makes up for this by having both an uncanny ability to just seemingly pick up skills and perform decently with them and he is also talented in anything regarding charisma. Sort of a "Jack of all trades, master of none." Not your first go to, but he can be a reliable fall-back in case things go south.

Standard equipment: A regular Las-Pistol, Booster Pack [Basically an odd version of a jet-pack that is more used to cover distance quickly in non-low gravity environments, and of coarse to maneuver in low gravity environments. It however cannot allow Karl to ascend rapidly in altitude as the device was originally designed to help people in low-grav situations to easily maneuver about without worry to floating off or having to rely upon pesky inertia.] The PANU [Personalized Assistant Neural Uplink] Helmet which displays information to the user, help keep the user safe from airborne contagions or low air environments [It will need something to supply the O2] and help with any neural uplinks by acting as the bridge between the implant and whatever it is being connected to without running the risk of the user having his/or skull fried. There's still a chance of that happening, but with the helmet. It'll be the one to maybe catch on fire, which might give you a chance to get it off before dying. The helmet also features a function personally implemented by Karl with the aid of a friend where it can display symbols on the visor. Helping Karl make faces without having to show his face. And finally, a regular compad.

Alright, when you change the AI to VI feel free to post this in the index. We'll put ol' Danny boy on ice for now.
