Vaughn Ennis lived close to school.
Close enough that unlike most other students who either took the bus, were driven by parents, or drove themselves to school, the mild-mannered boy actually rode a bike. When asked why, he'd always answer that it was cheaper that way, plus it was a good way to stay in shape. Not that he really had that much of a shape to begin with, admittedly. He was a somewhat scrawny boy, his arms almost comparable to noodles, and he even wore glasses to boot, almost taking on the appearance of a stereotypical "nerd" type of person if not for his modestly tall height of 5'9 and his mysteriously clean complexion, face practically free of any sort of blemishes, though at the cost of possessing something of a babyface.
On this day like any other, now that classes were out and students were eagerly setting to leave, Vaughn did as he usually did, sitting outside on his bike and waiting for a certain dear friend to show up so they'd be able to walk home together. It was like tradition; he simply had to do it every day. Never mind how the currently cold season was freezing his ears off, especially with its chilling winds, or the distractingly loud crowd, quite excited for the coming Winter Break. Still, it was of little consequence in the long run. Vaughn was happy to wait for her, come what may. This sort of tradition hadn't gone unnoticed by a few of the students, especially those that had known Vaughn since middle school or so, as he'd been keeping to that sort of tradition for that long, and of course, as people did, people talked. Who would ever think that of all people, she would be close friends with someone like reliably plain, normal Vaughn Ennis?
Of course, Vaughn didn't mind that people talked. People could think what they wanted about the two of them, but the undeniable truth indeed was that he was close friends with her. And Vaughn wasn't about to feel embarrassed about whom he chose to spend his time with. And he was sure she felt the same if she kept on letting him be with her as well.
