Dragon Fire

"No problem. It's alright. And hey," she said before he was fully out of earshot, "take care." Allira meant that. She smiled at him then continued drinking. She downed her shots and wiped her lips. Allira noticed two guys looking at her while talking. It wouldn't be the first time someone had done that. She looked around the place; there was barely any girls. Had she been Ryo's girlfriend, she would've felt insulted that he'd leave her alone at such a place. But she's not just any other girl and she isn't Ryo's girlfriend. So that was alright with her.

She ordered whiskey from the bartender and sipped that slowly while she surveyed the room. A bunch of guys has already noticed her lack of accompaniment. It won't be long until someone tries to approach her. Oh, well. Guess it was time to get to business. It's easy to figure out if someone's a dragon or not in their human form. If you cut them with a regular blade/knife and they bleed, they're human. However, if you cut them and they barely even notice it, better get another blade and slash a major artery. However, for Fire-bringers, they bleed because they're mostly human. However, they also heal a lot faster--depending on how deep and how big the cut is.

Allira put down a couple more bills from her pocket before standing up, pretending to be wobbly. It's only been 3 days since the beginning of the month. Other, younger, dragons are still iffy about being caged in a human body. If done perfectly, she could have an extra kill for today.

As she got out of the door she noticed the two men who were previously staring at her stand up. She deliberately slowed down her pace to let them follow. As they finally reached her, one grabbed her arm and smiled. "Hey, pretty little thing. Where did your boyfriend go?" God, the smell of alcohol was disgusting. The one who held her dragged her into the alley, slamming her back against the wall. She pretended to get hurt.

"Your boyfriend shouldn't go leaving pretty little girls like you to fend for your own." His partner has joined them, practically caging Allira in a drunken embrace with the strong smell of alcohol and cigarettes. "You got really pre--" he didn't finish his slurred words when he tried to touch her face. She immediately punched him in the gut while slashing at the other with the blade she had produced from her jacket. Asshole #1 was pushed back from the blow, holding his face. There was blood. Ok, human then.

The other one tried to attack her but she easily blocked him before slashing at his arm. Blood. She immediately grabbed the one she just sliced and pushed him to the other one, making their heads meet with a brutal force.

Allira looked at the two passed out bastards before wiping her blade on one of their shirts and sheathing it back. Well that was a waste of effort. She looked up at the sky littered with stars that she could barely see. How pretty. She snorted and started walking home.

The first thing Ryo noticed was that the fire was not just any fire. It was dragon fire, one of the only things that could really hurt him. The second thing he noticed was a woman screaming about her daughter still being inside. He looked from her to the burning building. It was an old eight story building renovated into apartments. Most people would probably write off the cause of the fire as the building being old and rickety. If only they knew better. Dragon fire burned hotter and more aggressively than natural fire, and as such, even Ryo could feel the heat through his suit.

Counting him, there were only four firefighters there at the scene, plus an assortment of cops and some paramedics. Two of the firefighters were on the hoses, and the other two, Ryo and his teammate, were sent inside to make sure the building was empty and to retrieve any people or pets left inside. The two of them moved quickly, kicking down any doors that had been left shut, and searching every room. They each took a floor and moved up as fast as they could.

When Ryo reached the fifth floor, he found a young girl trapped in her bedroom, crying and trying to stay away from the fire. Parts of the building were beginning to collapse and he had to get her out quick, before the whole thing fell on top of them. He entered quickly, speaking soothingly to her until she finally got the courage to run over to him. He held her to him and turned to leave. She clutched onto his chest like her life depended on it. Ryo passed his partner on his way back down.

They had just gotten to the third floor when the stairs under him collapsed and he fell nearly a floor down. He lay winded for a moment, a sharp pain in his side, then pushed himself to his feet. He felt a little wobbly, but he pushed it aside. His only focus at the moment was the crying little girl he clutched in his arms. He staggered down the last flight of stairs and out into the cool night. Paramedics rushed over to them and took the girl, then tried to get him over to an ambulance. They kept saying something about blood, and that he needed to rest, but he wasnt listening. His partner was still inside, and the stairs were beginning to collapse. He shook off the paramedics and hurried back inside. He got up to the spot where the stairs had collapsed under him and got ready to jump across. Before he could, however, his partner appeared carrying two small dogs. They got as close to each other as they could and passed the dogs down. Then his partner jumped across and together, they exited the building.

Outside, Ryo spotted the woman who had been yelling earlier clutching the little girl to her, both of them crying. An elderly couple called out to him, saying that the dogs were theirs. He returned the dogs to their owners and only then did he let the paramedics pull him away. They got him out of his suit and began cleaning a wound on his side. He looked down at the wound numbly, very impressed. He'd gotten it when he'd fallen, and through that, the smoke and fire was able to get to him. He had light burns all around the wounded area, and his lungs felt as if they were made of sandpaper, despite the oxygen mask he'd been wearing.

"Would you like us to take you to the hospital, sir?" The paramedic asked once he was done treating the wound.

Ryo shook his head. "No, thats okay. I just want to go home."

"But sir, I highly reccommend-" he insisted, but Ryo stopped him with a firm shake of his head. The hospital was a bad idea for his kind, and he didnt want to put himself at risk like that. The paramedic, seeing a lost cause, shook his head and moved on. Ryo watched the other firefighters fighting to stop the burn. It only took them a few more minutes before it was out and the cleanup process began. More emergency personnel appeared, so his Captain let him go home. Ryo gratefully pulled his shirt on and trudged to his car.

He got home a while later. The wound he'd gotten was still painful, and it was evident in his movements. It would be healed in a day or two, but it still hurt like hell. He walked up the steps to his floor gingerly. Each movement sent needles through his body. What seemed like forever later, he reached his door and unlocked it. Boy was it nice to be home, he thought.

Allira could not figure out what could possibly wake her up at 2:45 in the morning. But something startled her before she heard the footsteps on the hall. Her room was right beside the stairs so it was easy to hear. Add that to the dragon hearing and that's a freaking home-base advantage. Then she remembered Ryo. He had to leave because of an emergency. Somehow this geared her feet to the floor and out the door, her heart caught in her throat. She caught him before he could fully go inside his apartment. "Ryo?" She called.

Her head was the only thing out in the hallway when she called him but then she noticed the burns on his arm and the hint of blood seeping through his shirt. "That doesn't look so good." She was already getting out of her apartment, forgetting the fact that she was only wearing a white wife-beater and girl boxer shorts. She approached him on bare feet, her eyes glued solely on his wound. "What happened?"

He paused in his doorway and looked over at her, trying not to notice her outfit. He wanted nothing more than to go to sleep. "It was just an accident. I'll be fine," he assured her. He put one hand on the bandages. "Its not as bad as it looks." Then he remembered how he'd left her at that bar. "Did you get home okay? I'm really sorry for leaving you at that bar. I should have walked you home first."

Allira shrugged all of his comments off as she got nearer to him. "I'm fine," she removed his hand from the wounds and a small gasp escaped her lips. She'd know Dragon fire everywhere. "How did you get this? Are you alright?" Dragon fire won't heal easily. She's surprised he can stand the pain. Half of her wanted to run and hunt down the dragon that started the fire. How could she let this happen? What the hell was wrong with her? Her mission was to protect her parameter! "Where was the fire? Was it near here?"

He waved a hand vaguely behind him. "I'm fine. It was an apartment complex a few miles of here. A little girl was trapped. I fell through the stairs trying to get her out. Apparently landed on some broken wood." He didnt understand why she was making such a fuss of the whole thing. It had been an accident, one he was more than happy to repeat for the sake of the child he saved. He'd heal up in a few days. "Everyone got out safely. Thats what matters." He hadnt realized it until he looked down at the bandage, but some blood had begun seeping through the bandage, staining it a deep crimson. "Dont worry, I'll be okay. Just need to take care of it, thats all." He smiled reassuringly at her.

Allira was not convinced. A couple of miles? It would've probably been out of her parameter. She's only up to 10 miles around. It is a big city. She'll have to check. Nothing like this has ever happened before. Her concern only grew when blood has begun seeping through his bandage. "Let's go to my room. Let's patch that up." The paramedics probably thought they'd stop the bleeding but dragon fire burns are not so easily healed. She started pulling him to the direction of her room.

He pulled gently away from her, trying to go back into his own apartment. "Allira, I'm fine, really." He sounded tired, he felt tired, and he probably looked tired as well. The only thing that sounded good to him was his bed and a nice long sleep. At her insistence, however, he finally gave in and let her drag him into her apartment. He was too tired to care at this point. The sooner he could get some sleep, the better.

Once inside Allira took out the emergency kit she had specially made for these situations. She led him to her bed, making him sit still while she carefully removed his shirt. She opened up the kit and started carefully removing the bandage. The wound didn't look too deep but the damage was extended by its exposure to dragon fire. She carefully tried to apply healing swabs around the wound, being careful not to poke inside too much. Allira didn't actually have the softest touch considering she was more used to holding weapons and causing the damage rather than healing it. She tried to keep herself focused on trying to heal his wound, but she felt herself reddening at the thought that there was a half-naked man on her bed. She tried to hide her embarrassment by concentrating on trying to heal his wounds.

She used a powerful salve that could cause a lot of pain once applied to the injury. There was only one time she ever used this on herself and she passed out from the sheer pain. But then when she woke up, the wound was gone. So that had been good for her.

She only used a little bit, not wanting to have Ryo ask too many questions as to why his injuries were gone the next morning. She couldn't help but notice how beautifully built his body was. Maybe he worked out a lot. She finished up, putting in another bandage to protect his wounds from infection. His skin felt warm under her skin and she could that she liked that feeling. At that, she blushed again. Why the hell was she thinking of stuff like this? She put in the tapes to secure the bandage, her hands moving across his soft, toned skin.

She looked at his tired face and tried to smile comfortingly. "I'll go get you some water." She stood to go to the small ref, taking a glass with her.

Ryo sat quietly and patiently while she treated his wound, hissing in pain a couple times as she roughly handled the wound. He thought she'd be more gentle than this, but he'd been wrong before. It didnt take very long, but to him it seemed to take forever. When she left to get some water, he layed back on the bed and stared a the ceiling, not bothering to put his shirt back on. It would just hurt too much to do that. Within seconds he had fallen into a deep, dreamless sleep.

When she got back she saw that he'd fallen asleep. At first her mind thought: PANIC! but then... there was a half-naked, good-looking guy on her bed. Boy, that escalated quicker than she thought. Who'd have thought there would be a reason for any man to be on Allira's bed? She shook her head. Quickly put away everything and put on some clothes. She'll have to check out why no one was able able to prevent that dragon. She walked over to Ryo and covered his body in case he might get cold. Then she silently slipped out of her room and into the cold dawn.

Ryo woke late the next day, well after noon. He stumbled out of bed and into the bathroom, not realizing that he wasnt in his own apartment. He cleaned the blood and soot off of him, examined his wound, and padded silently into the kitchen to find some food. He paused in the doorway to the living room, finally realizing that this wasnt his house. Then he remembered the previous night: the fire, the girl, and coming home and having Allira treat his wound. He furrowed his brow and looked around, taking in everything in her living room. "Allira?" He called.

Allira found out that the dragon had been terminated. It wasn't on her area of responsibility so she left it there. When she got back to her apartment Ryo was still asleep so she left some take-out breakfast on the kitchen table and left for school. She'll be back for lunch to check on him.

Allira unlocked the door to her apartment, somehow not at all bothered that someone else was inside. She heard Ryo calling her name. Did he just wake up now? Man, she must've applied more salve than she thought. "Hey, I just got back from school. Did you have breakfast already? How's the wound?" Allira looked at the bandage on his side. It didn't have anymore bleeding. She stared for a few moments before shaking her head lightly. She's got to stop staring at his abs.

Ryo ran a hand through his mop of hair, completely oblivious to her staring. "Breakfast? No. Just woke up." He glanced back at her bed. "Sorry about that, didnt mean to fall asleep." He stretched again, a little surprised that his wound didnt hurt. e looked down at the bandage. "Whatever you did to it is amazing. It doesnt hurt at all. Think I could get some?" He asked, glancing around he kitchen. He spotted the food left on the counter and homed in on it, a smile appearing when he spotted it. He found a fork and wasted no time in digging in. He was starving.

Allira put her bag down beside the table, getting a glass of water and yogurt from the ref. She put the glass of water in front of him. She was glad the wound's okay now. She's still not comfortable about the other dragon slayers not being careful enough about their missions. "Eat up," she said while opening up her cup of yogurt and digging in. "I gotta get back to class in about an hour."

He took a long drink from the glass, and looked over at her, a smile playing on his face. "Thanks, for everything. You've been a great help. I appreciate it." He finished the food and the water a few moments later. He washed his dishes and threw away the containers the food had been in. "That was pretty good, actually." He sighed contentedly and leaned against the counter, watching her.

She finished her yogurt and looked up. She found him watching her with a smile on his face. Immediately, she felt blood rush to her cheeks. She coughed, standing up and throwing away the yogurt cup and placing the spoon beside him. "It's nothing. What are neighbors for?" She chuckled to herself before putting some distance in between them. This was all new to her and she did not understand any of it. "I, uh, I gotta go to class." She was walking back, facing him, trying to come up with lame excuses. Allira didn't know why she had the urge to run at the same time she wanted to stay. She cleared her throat again. "I gotta grab some stuff at the library, and yeah." She grabbed her bag and gave him a shaky smile. "I'll see you later. Lock up when you go out. Bye." She said hurriedly, running down the stairs.

"Be careful!" He called after her. He still felt bad for leaving her the other night. Maybe I can make it up to her tonight, he thought. He went back into the bathroom and removed the bandages. The wound was gone, a fact that surprised even him. He glanced back into he bedroom, wondering how she could possibly get her hands on something that could do such a thing. He shook his head, pushing away the thoughts. She was a good girl, and if she had wanted to harm him, she probably would have already. Last night was a perfect opportunity, he realized. He had been weak, and had even let himself get pulled into the apartment of someone he had met not too long ago. He sighed, threw the bandages away, and headed out. He locked her door behind him and returned to his own apartment. He changed into his running clothes and headed outside for a jog.

Allira didn't see Ryo for the rest of the day. It was already 7 pm. She's already finished all of her homework. Her apartment was clean, so there was no need to fuss over anything. "Ugh," she groaned. She put on black leather jacket on top of her black top. Her boots came next along with her other paraphernalia for hunting. She checked if she was well equipped, and being satisfied, she headed out for the night. It wouldn't be so bad. It'll be like... doing extra credit.

Ryo had spent the rest of the day after his run relaxing at a local indoor pool. He headed back home around dusk. The run, plus the water had left him feeling fantastic. He'd definitely have to thank Allira for her help later, he thought. He was only a few blocks away from the pool when a knife zipped past him, giving im a light cut on his arm. He froze and turned towards the source of the attack, the cut already beginning to heal. A man stood there decked out in knives, swords and a couple guns. He glared at Ryo hatefully and threw a few more knives. "Hunter," Ryo growled under his breath, ducking low to avoid the knives. Images of his father's murder floated up out of his memory. A deep growl began reverberating from his chest, fire beginning to form around his hands. He sent small arrow-sized streams of fire at the man, but he dodged and retaliated with a few more knives. The two of them matched each other for a few more minutes, until the hunter ran out of knives to throw. He pulled out one of his guns, his impatience evident on his face. He wanted this over with, quickly. He shot it directly at Ryo. Ryo ducked to the side and managed to only get scrape on his arm from the bullet. He yelped slightly, his eyes beginning to turn a reddish color and his pupils became slits. His growl deepened until it could be felt throughout the body. His tanned skin darkened into black scales, and his body began to grow. Horns, wings and a tail began to form. Within moments, he was in his dragon form, and among dragons, he was not small. He was generally considered to be a very large dragon. He didnt bother roaring, he just continued his deep-chested growl, batting at the hunter with one massive paw. The hunter dropped his gun, pulled out a sword and jumped, just barely missing being hit, and brought the sword down to plunge into Ryo's paw.
