BIOGRAPHY:
Clementine Date was born in Cleveland, Ohio into a middle/upper class family. Her grandparents on her mother’s side were immigrants (now naturalized citizens), her grandparents on her father’s side still live in Japan (Ise in the Mie Prefecture). Her father has lived in the United States for almost his whole life, having been moved here with his uncle when he was a child. By the same account, Clementine’s mother was brought by her own parents when she was just 3 months old. So Clementine is the first born of the family to be a natural United States citizen.
In school, Clementine was seen as a very intelligent student. But, over and over again her instructors would comment about how she tended not to apply herself. Often spending her time in school doodling or discretely listening to music. ‘Brilliant but lazy’ is a term used more than once to describe her. There were times when she simply didn’t apply herself. She was very smart, she just often got bored in some situations. Her other passions would often take precedence over her school work. But her parents often would use those same passions to ensure Clementine was doing her school work. Like grounding her from her favorite sports, or television programs or smashing cassette tapes (in 1 instance). So Clementine learned the art of doing just enough to get passing grades, but little more. Which, in some eyes, was more hard work than the base school work. Added to the fact it showed how clever she was; she knew precisely what she needed and accomplished that.
Her mother, Yuzuki, worked at a day care center. She worked many hours, often leaving Clementine to entertain herself after school. Clementine had to learn to take care of herself while her parents were working. She never held that against them, if nothing else it would teach Clementine the importance of hard work. Especially when it’s to hold up and support those you love. She recognized sacrifice for others early on in her life.
And early on in her life she took a fancy to Archery. She had seen the animated Disney film ‘Robin Hood’, which she was simply enchanted by. The hero was a fox… and for many years her mother called Clementine her ‘Little Fox’ (as in, Clementine was very clever and witty, personified as a fox). Her parents did their best to get her Archery classes, they tried to get her all of the best they could to facilitate her new passion. And she embraced it, she delve fully into it all. And as time passed, it was evident she was something of a savant. At least in terms she was very good very quickly. To the point she won multiple competitions over the years, and earned herself a partial scholarship. She was even one of the finalists for the U.S. Olympic Archery Team.
Sadly, her parents’ relationship was often strained. At best. Her father, Daishi, was often an angry man. And sometimes even abusive towards Yuzuki, though Clementine was kept in the dark for most of that. But the child knew there was something wrong in the relationship. But Yuzuki would stay and endure the physical and emotional abuse for the sake of the family, her daughter especially.
Clementine’s father worked for a prominent accounting firm. He provided for his family, even if their expenses at times far outstretched their income. No one would really question this, as the family didn’t have an extravagant lifestyle at all. But after many years of conjecture, a federal investigation was opened against the firm he worked for. Daishi would repeatedly claim innocence in the matter, often pointing out that it was his firm that was under investigation, not him.
But his claims of innocence seemed to be silenced when he was. He killed himself, jumping from a bridge. With his death, it seemed much of the wrongdoing was pinned on him and on him alone. People thought this was odd, most seeing the firm as using Daishi as the scapegoat. But no matter how it happened, it did. Daishi was blamed, and most all of his assets seized by the federal government.
Life for Yuzuki and Clementine only went downhill from there. With Daishi’s assets seized, they found themselves without a home. Or even a vehicle. Having no real choices left, Clementine and her mother had to leave the life they knew. Clementine had her partial scholarship, and so they focused on that. Together they found an out of the way town where hopefully no one had heard of them. Using her maiden name and changing Clementine’s last name to the same, they were able to get housing and a small parcel of land. They had some government assistance, of course. They were cooperating with the government the whole time Daishi was being investigated.
So Clementine and her mother have started a new life, hoping this one would turn out better…
