Akane nodded her head and put the beast into a bit of a faster walk, the sooner they get of here the better. "Ok..the sun" she said to herself feeling a bit nervous, she had to steer therefore couldn't arm herself with her sword. She felt a bit better when she heard Marcus draw his sword, with one steering and the other being on guard it couldn't go that wrong.

The wind kept on picking up and night was almost upon them "The sun is going down" Akane said looking worried. They have been walking like this for a whole while and still nothing but white sand was in sight.

By the time they stopped Marcus was mentally exhausted. He had been peering into the sand on all sides for the entire trip, straining his eyes for any signs of movement. So far there had been one. His lips were dry and cracked and his clothes felt heavy with sand from the wind. "We'll have to stop here for the night." he said wearily, "See if you can get him to dig a small hol ein the sand, it might protect us from the wind."

He slid off the back of the beast and almost crumpled into the sand. He had forgotten riding gave you cramps. With some groaning he managed to straighten up, his sword still in his hand. "I don't like this Akane."

Akane slid of the animal and supported Marcus "Are you okay?" She asked, she knew it was a stupid thing to ask obviously he was in pain "I'm sorry" she said to him and turned to walk to the animal. She gave him a pat and he flopped down on the sand also exhausted "No chance of getting him to dig, he must be just as tired as we are" Akane said rubbing the beasts head.

"I'm just sore." Marcus replied to Akane, putting a bit more strength in his voice so she wouldn't feel bad, "I'll be fine after a rest."

When the beast collapsed he realised there wasn't much more they could do. He sheathed his sword and walked over to the beast's belly where he sat down. Its bulk was keeping some of the wind away, though it was coming from every direction and impossible to be free of. "Do you want to take the first watch tonight?" he asked.

She smiled at Marcus as he went to sit by the beasts belly. She knew he was more tired and sore then he wanted her to believe, she has knows him for only 3 years but that's enough to see through his mask.

"I will" she said going to stand at the beasts head "you kept watch the whole time while we travelled...rest now" she said making sure she was fully armed and ready to protect her friend.

"Thanks." He gave Akane a smile then closed his eyes. Sleeping in the wastes was tricky but he'd had plenty of practice. And tonight he had a warm, soft body he could rest against to help. The nights were cold and could sap a person's warmth if they weren't careful. Almost moving automatically he reached into his pack and drew out his blanket, draping it over him for some extra warmth and a bit of protection. Resting back against the beast it wasn't long before he fell asleep.

It must have been almost midnight when Akane saw them coming "What is that" she asked herself. There were two lights burning in the distance, they looked like lanterns but they were still far to see. Not taking her chances she drew her sword. She waited a while but it seemed as tho the lights had stopped.

Akane slowly walked over to where Marcus was resting "Hey" she shook his shoulder "Look...I can't make out what they are" she said keeping herself low.

Marcus's eyes opened slowly as Akane awoke him. He was feeling very tired and it took him a second to place where he was. As soon as he did he realised something must be wrong for his friend to be waking him, but had trouble focusing on the situation. He fumbled with his sword, trying to draw it as quietly as he could, as he wiped his eyes with his other hand. They were thick with sand, probably both from him and the environment. "I can't see them" he whispered back, blinking rapidly, "I'll follow your lead."

Akane nodded and started to move towards the lights, they were further then she thought and she felt bad for waking Marcus up, she could've went on her own. She slowed her pace, no doubt that if they got close enough they would be spotted.

(I'm leaving up to you what they are, get creative! Just cause I'm tired X)

Marcus moved behind Akane and followed her as she moved towards the lights. He was still stiff but he could feel his muscles easing up and his mind waking up as adrenaline began to enter his blood. He'd probably be even more tired after this but at least he'd be able to act if they were in danger.

As the pair got closer a shape began to define itself as a shadow thanks to the two lights. It was obviously not a human. Each of the lights came from an orb hanging off a long, tentacle like appendage. The tentacles were attached to the top of a spherical head about a metre behind the lights. Four large mandibles extended from the creatures mouth, currently held together in two pairs. Its body was still hidden by darkness but it looked to have more than four legs.

"Looks like trouble." Marcus whispered with a grimace.

Akane too had seen what was lurking in the dark, she couldn't at all make out what it was. She stopped in her tracks and bent down low. "What do we do" she asked softly to Marcus as she put a hand on the hilt of her sword. Marcus had magic, but she didn't or if she did she didn't know about it, but she was pretty sure she had nothing.

The thing was heading right for them. Even if they moved out of the way it would still find the animal they had been riding and that wouldn't end well. It had to be dealt with. "How quickly do you think you can run in and kill it?" he asked Akane in a whisper, "If you circle around to the side, I'll illusion trap it. Then you run in and take off its head while its confused." He put his hand on his own sword, ready to draw it if something changed.

Letting a grin come on her lips she looked at Marcus "as fast as you need me to" with that she slowly moved away from Marcus, still staying low, she neede a head start to run so the farther she was on the monsters side already the easier it will be. Once she was about 5 or 6 meters away from Marcus she drew her sword and gave him a nod.

Seeing Akane nod Marcus turned his attention back to the creature. It was closer now and he could see that its head and body were a shiny brown. He could see it had six long, black legs with multiple joints on each. With a start he realised it was, or had once been, an ant, but the crystals had mutated it greatly.

He locked eyes with it and, summoning his magic, very deliberately closed his left eye. A storm of colours suddenly erupted over half his vision instead of the normal darkness one would expect. His stomach heaved but he swallowed it down, not breaking his concentration. He could never keep up his power for long as it made him sick and disorientated. Even now he could feel himself involuntarily rolling to the left.

However the mutated ant had stopped dead in its tracks as soon as the magic hit it. Its tentacles started whipping around its head like crazy.

Akane froze for a moment as she saw what the thing was or at least used to be. She hesitated, she was torn between actually killing the monster or running to marcus and dragging him of where he could be save, but she did what she was told.

Swiftly she shot up and sprinted towards the beast, she leaped into the hair and brought her long sword above her head. With all the power she could muster she swung her sword down and cringed as she felt it slice through the beast witha sickening wet sound.

Akane landed as the head of the beast fell to the desert sand, she was breathing hard, adrenaline pumping through her veins.

As Akane's sword passed through the creature's neck Marcus opened his eye and released his hold on it, too late for it to do anything but die. Only it didn't.

Even as the orbs of light died and went dark, and green blood spurted form its severed neck the body began to thrash about. It's legs kicked wildly but it seemed to take a few steps forward as if intent on its original path. "Get away from it Akane!" Marcus yelled. They'd both seen the death throes of mutants before yet it was always unexpected when it happened. He rose up and jogged towards her, ready to act if the dying beast trapped her or help her get away.

Akane was still crouching down trying to catch her breath when Marcus' voice cut through the air, she jerked her up and saw the things body go out of control. She tried to jump away but her leg was caught by the monsters claw like one.

She tried to grab for her sword but it lay to far for her to grab. She struggled against its hold fear now grabbing at every part of her.

As the creature's leg caught Akane Marcus surged forwards in a sprint. With his sword in two hands he slammed it down on the appendage that had his friend trapped, slicing through it with ease. Letting go of his weapon with one hand he grabbed Akane's arm, "Let's go!". Batting at the creature's remaining legs as they continued to flail he helped Akane to her feet and pulled her out of it's range as quickly as he could.

Akane grabbed onto Marcus' arm to help pull herself up. She still had her heart beating in her ears. They ran for a little bit to make sure they where well away from the monster. Akane dropped to the sand hand leaned against a rock, breathing in deeply she gave Marcus a look to say 'thank you'

When they were a good distance from the monster Marcus dropped down onto his ass across from Akane. At her look he gave her a smile in return, knowing she would have done the same for him. He spent awhile catching his breath as well and looking at his sword. It looked like it had passed through the creature too quickly to get any blood on it. He then looked at Akane, "That was unexpected." he said with a chuckle.
