Opened in the same year as the Tokyo Recovery Project had started, Deadman Wonderland is both an amusement park as well as a maximum security prison that is privately owned by an unknown person since they never show their face in public. Here, criminals with both ordinary sentences as well as the death sentence are sent to do their time till either they are released after their time is up or they finally are executed due to their sentence being death. Those who are sentenced to death however are not killed immediately but rather are forced to wear a collar that has a time limit on it; while wearing the collar the inmate will constantly be injected with poison and when the timer is up the poison will kill it's wearer in an instant. Those who wear the collar must take an antidote that will extend their time limit to an extra three days. This antidote is shaped and wrapped up in a white and red wrapper that symbolizes a round piece of candy. The candy is supposedly extremely bitter. When the amusement park/prison was opened it was supposedly built to be assisting in the recovery of Tokyo after the massive Earthquake that had happened three years prior to the opening of Deadman Wonderland, however the true intentions of the amusement park/prison was actually to capture individuals who could be used and tested to become 'Deadmen'.
Deadmen are men and women who were sentenced to death and sent to Deadman Wonderland to serve their sentence, however just receiving the death sentence and being taken to the prison does not make them Deadmen immediately. What makes a prisoner a Deadman is when they live their sentence for longer than three days and continue to show a strong resolve to live no matter what happens. Whether it be their own will to live or their physical strength, endurance or any other kind of means. When the prisoner shows signs of being worthy, they are taken straight from their cell and brought to a separate section of the prison known as Sector 'G' that is hidden from all maps throughout the entire facility; from there the prisoner is experimented on and implanted with what is known as a 'Seed of Sin' into their body in a random spot.
After being implanted with the 'Seed of Sin', if the prisoner survives the surgery of receiving the seed they are forced to go through one test after another each day to see if they are capable of controlling the power that is known to be as 'Branch of Sin'. After several days and some requiring weeks of testing, if the prisoner is capable of controlling it by then without too many problems then they receive an alias before being put into the Carnival Corpse where they become one of the contestants of a show for what Deadman Wonderland was truly built for.
The Branch Of Sin differs with each person as it allows the very person to control and manipulate their own blood in any form they wish. Some are able to use their blood to solidify it into blades on their arms others are able to shoot bullets with it and some are even able to use their blood as whips. The main requirement to be able to use the Branch Of Sin however is the obvious fact that there must be an open wound somewhere on the person's body for blood to escape their insides so that they have access to it. The ability of controlling one's blood must also be cared for severely especially for those who use their ability in ranged combat; since the more blood they shoot from their body the more blood they will lose within them and if too much blood is lost than symptoms such as dizziness, coldness and the possibly of passing out can occur; constant use of their ability will obviously lead to death if the user does not allow their body to rest. Branch Of Sin's main weakness is what is known as Worm Eaters since it is a device implanted into weapons or objects that when blood from Branch Of Sin hits it; the blood will become completely useless and nothing more than ordinary blood. The only way to bypass this is for sneak attacks or attacking said enemy where there is no Worm Eater present or even simple hand-to-hand as well as uses regular weapons.
Worm Eaters are small devices that can be attached to any object or weapon. Worm Eaters are known to be only used by Undertakers since it is capable of canceling out any Deadman's Branch of Sin; causing any attack from a Deadman to turn from it's solid blood attack to nothing more than ordinary liquid. Due to Worm Eaters being devices that are far too small to be imbued into a full body suit armor, this makes it so that if a Deadman were to use a strike with their ability that is unable to be seen by either speed or is simply invisible; they can strike at parts of an Undertaker where there is no Worm Eater imbued into it.
The Undertakers are men and women who were once also prisoners in Deadman Wonderland and many of them were also sentenced to death as well. Unlike many of the other prisoners who are sentenced to death and are eventually taken to Sector 'G' to become Deadman, Undertakers are not taken to Sector 'G' at first since even with their crime and sentenced to prison they seem to always hold a strange type of urge to live though it is not like many others who are wishing for freedom from the prison to live. Many Undertakers enjoy the thought of killing while there are some that do not but still prefer to be at the prison to keep Deadman there rather than return to the outside world.
There are two different types of Undertakers; there are foot soldiers who wear all white armor that cover them from head to toe and they tend to use the general issued weaponry given to them such as rifles, swords, daggers, hammers, and other selection of weapons. All of their weapons are also imbued with Worm Eaters. Than there are Squad Leaders, which are more specialized Undertakers who have special weapons and equipment of their own that is also imbued with Worm Eaters. Undertaker responsibilities are to keep prisoners inside of Deadman Wonderland whether they are ordinary ones or if they are Deadmen.
