  4. Cursed

    Prompt: Why does everything you send me end up being cursed?

    A short thing I wrote in about 20 minutes, zero editing save for spelling errors. Enjoy!

    I stared at the unmarked brown box in my hands. The only writing was my address. This usually meant a box from Damien. I groaned, stepping back inside and closing the door behind me.

    "Swear to god..." I muttered, tearing the tape off and gingerly opening the box. Inside was a bunch of tissue paper, in various shades of pink. It looked very non-threatening. Unfortunately, so had other "gifts" he had sent to me. I dug through the paper to find a simple leather bound book. It looked very non assuming, like a planner one would find at Office Max. The leather was cheap, the paper looked chemical white. I was immediately suspicious.

    Looking through the rest of the box, I found a small stuffed bear. It was bright pink with a frilly tutu and a plastic star wand. A plastic tiara graced its head. It looked like it was bought at the dollar store. I thought it was adorable. I reached in to pick it up before my phone rang in my pocket. Looking at caller ID, I frowned. Damien of course.

    "Hey." I answered, waiting for his response. All I heard for a few seconds was heavy breathing.

    "Hello darling! How are you this fine day?" He finally spoke in an animated kindness.

    "Yeah yeah okay, what's the shit in the package."

    "Oh you did get it! I thought you'd like the planner."

    I raised my eyebrow, grabbing the planner.

    "So it's not cursed? The stuff you sent isn't going to haunt my house and dreams? I'm not going to call forth the legions of hell if I touch this book?"

    There was a short silence. He cleared his throat.

    "Well, I mean-"

    "God dammit Damien!" I dropped the book immediately. "Stop sending me haunted books!"

    "Hey now, don't blame the planner, it did nothing." His voice lowered. "The bear on the other hand..."

    I looked into the box to look at the bear. I quickly felt panic rush over me.

    "Damien where-"

    "Okay so the bear's haunted. Well, possessed more like it. Either way, have fun with him! He likes hide and seek. Also he enjoys sewing needles and pins. So careful where you sit."

    I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Why is everything you send me cursed?"

    "Because I love you. Have fun Paris! Kisses!" The demon quickly hung up the phone, and I put mine back in my pocket. I let out a frustrated groan, and a childish giggle floated through the house.

    "Oh fuck this."

    OH LOOK DRUNK WRITING

    The two stood, staring at each other. Nicholas sported a devious grin, while Charlotte was obviously a bit more perturbed.

    "Bet you thought I was dead." Were the first words he had spoken to her in weeks. She swallowed, nodding softly. He had been gone for so long. She had found his body. Their plan didn't work, she had been in mourning for weeks how could he have done this to her?

    "What the fuck Nicholas." She spat, her voice cracking under the weight of her emotion. "You're a cunt." Honestly she should have thought he was still alive. He wouldn't die so easily. He claimed he still hadn't finished his largest goal in life. So he wouldn't die before then, he was much too stubborn. She looked up at his face to his triumphant grin.

    "Oh come on, the fact I was able to convince you I was dead should be worth some points."

    "No you fucking asshole!" She tore into him immediately, growing ever more frustrated. "You are the worst person! Maybe you should have been dead! I guess I'm just not important enough, is that it? All I'm here for is your stupid plan, and I hate your stupid plan! I don't even know what it is, because you won't tell me your stupid-ass plan! Maybe I should just go and leave and-"

    "You're not here for the plan." He interrupted.

    "What?"

    "You're not here for the plan. You're here because I want you to be."

    She eyed him carefully. The words sounded vaguely threatening, but his tone practically melted her heart. She was perplexed in the moment.

    "I want you to be with me. You're the only one I trust. I thought you knew I loved you." He opened his arms slightly, beckoning a hug. Charlotte still wasn't entirely convinced, but her heart was fluttering. She moved into his arms, almost against her own will.

    "Still an asshole..." She murmured, enjoying the soft strokes on her hair. He chuckled lightly.

    "I know." His eyes stared into the distance, face falling completely cold. The tender emotion was entirely gone, and it was replaced by something much more sinister. "I know."
