EXERCISE Creating Holidays # 19: The Future!

Discussion in 'DEVELOPING CHARACTERS & CULTURES' started by Minibit, Aug 24, 2014.

  1. The idea of knowing the future has fascinated humanity for a long time. We read palms, clouds, and tea leaves, we look for signs in dead birds and broken mirrors and rain, and whether they have basis or not, it usually gives people a sense of stability if they think they know what to expect from the future.

For this challenge, create a holiday that is based around telling, seeing, or otherwise interacting with the future! The future-seeing doesn't have to be accurate or even authentic; it can be a fortune-telling festival, or a day when (perhaps annual) disasters are prepared for. It could be to do with time-travel, or for predicting and preparing for deaths, or there could be no actual looking into the future, and it's just a day of general contemplation and preparation. If your culture is involved in a war 99% of the time, this holiday could even have tactical uses! So long as the theme of "The Future" is apparent, anything goes.

    Holiday Name:
    When is it celebrated?
    Who celebrates?
    What is done to celebrate?
    How old is this holiday?
Has this holiday changed much from its roots?
Where do the festivities take place?
Is there anything it is taboo to do on this holiday?
Do people dress differently for this holiday?
Is any kind of decoration traditional?
Are any colours, symbols, or icons associated with this holiday?
Are any spirits or deities associated with this holiday?
Is it an important/widespread celebration, or a smaller affair?
Are there any foods or drinks associated with this holiday?
Do any natural events coincide with this holiday (i.e.: an eclipse)?
Does this holiday revolve around a specific future event?
How far into the future is the basis of this holiday?
Is anything done to prepare for the future?
How is the future foreseen (if at all)?
    Is any time-travelling involved?
(If yes) how does it work and do events change as a result of the time travel?
