Fantasy is my #1; I will give almost anything a chance if it has strong fantasy elements. Post apocalyptic, superhero, alternate history, science fantasy, some supernatural, romance, and a few fandoms (especially Game of Thrones) are also likely to catch my eye.
Sometimes the best part of worldbuilding is coming up with inventive ways for villains to destroy all your hard work. This expansion is meant to get you to do just that: create a doomsday device (or spell or creature or whatever, go wild) that can destroy at least an entire world, but feel free to ramp it up to a solar system, galaxy, universe, or the entirety of reality if you're feeling particularly omnicidal today. Below are a few questions to help you get your mad scientist juices flowing.

How does your doomsday device destroy things?
What is the scale of the destruction it causes?
How does one activate the device?
Is there any way to stop or destroy it?

Alright, some utterly destructive stuff from some of my settings.

Pavonisia

#1 Grey Goo Seeding

How does your doomsday device destroy things?

It consists of self replicating nano-machines that convert more and more material into further copies. This is an exponential process.

What is the scale of the destruction it causes?

It can thoroughly devestate and depopulate most planetary biospheres

How does one activate the device?

typically launched with timers and in waves, these capsules move slowly and steadily and employ advanced cloaking methods to prevent themselves being detected as they sneak onto planets. Then they hide themselves and once the timer is up unleash the grey goo.

Is there any way to stop or destroy it?

If you can find them and identify them as threats the capsules themselves are unarmed.

#2 Scatter Cannons

How does your doomsday device destroy things?

It engulfs the target in a black hole while portals laid inside the black hole itself flings the spaghettified remains million of lightyears around the universe.

What is the scale of the destruction it causes?

Each shot from this kind of cannon consumes a star as ammunition, alternatively a manufactured black hole.

How does one activate the device?

Each such cannon is mounted in a dyson station with its controls being in there.

Is there any way to stop or destroy it?

The station itself is a nigh invulnerable shell that can encompass stars and outmaneuver just about anything. Actual shots are modified black holes. It is very unlikely anyone could do anything about it.

#3 Bombardment

How does your doomsday device destroy things?

This is not so much a doomsday device as sufficient application of spacecraft grade weapons to a planets surface.

What is the scale of the destruction it causes?

Anything from destroyed cities to devastated biospheres to mass-scattered celestial bodies. Rarely goes above devastating biospheres.

How does one activate the device?

Bring your space weapons to the enemy place and then blow it up.

Is there any way to stop or destroy it?

Yes, destroy the spacecraft.

Maxverse

#1 Planar Realignment Ritual

How does your doomsday device destroy things?

By means of epic rituals one can alter the flow of quintessence from the source, rearranging the cosmology (this has happened before)

What is the scale of the destruction it causes?

Universal

How does one activate the device?

Typically by gathering an absolutely ludicrous amount of cosmic energy and then applying the right control rituals to shift the flow of quintessence.

Is there any way to stop or destroy it?

Kill the ones doing the ritual or prevent them from getting access to it in the first place.

Spiritshell

#1 Astral Cancer

How does your doomsday device destroy things?

It converts the astral plane into a degraded version of itself in a self-replicating and expanding manner. Things in such zones break apart and are reshaped into grotesque nightmares as the concepts making up everything are horribly distorted. Eventually these regions break down into a splotchy void.

What is the scale of the destruction it causes?

Potentially Universal but unlikely to spread that far

How does one activate the device?

Unkown

Is there any way to stop or destroy it?

A sufficiently powerful spirit that understands the fundamentals of the cosmology well enough can un-destroy the affected areas. This causes incredible amounts of energy to be created as a side effect, leading to terrible explosions. Still vastly preferable to obliteration.

#2 Realm hub destabilization

How does your doomsday device destroy things?

Realm hubs create stable lanes of easy travel between certain regions of certain realms. However if destabilized they tend to create a short-lived but devastating planar rift. This is effectively a huge sphere that transports all things it touches into the inter-realm ether, some things are only partially transported and thus have pieces of them removed from the realms existence.

What is the scale of the destruction it causes?

Typically it erases a spherical volume with a radius of between 1-20 realm-hub diameters, that is the diameter of the given hub.

How does one activate the device?

Find the things making the stable link and then destroy them.

Is there any way to stop or destroy it?

Don't destroy the stabilizers.

Echo is an AI created by a Doctor Named Brian, a Scientist whose originally name was Kai Fledge, but changed due to family reasons.

+Disclaimer= Really made by myself, but it was for a role play.

The name of the Ai is called Echo, but can also be called Evolve , Utopia, Evolution, Neptune, or Screech. The gender of the Ai is female, but it can shift into a male at anytime of its choosing. It stands to be 5'8 in height and weighs 155.5 pounds. In order to misguide the public, Echo was made to resemble a human, thus her features and body makeup are misleading to her actual appearance, which is a large brain encased in a cell of metallic nerves.

Echo has three different abilities/weapons.
  • Neptune
  • Digitize
  • Error

Echo's weapon class is labeled as a Multi-World Grade A. Which means her ability has a global effect. Echo's special ability is called Box, which is just another word for Neptune. Her body make up is made of Tungsten, a strong metal. Tungsten is also known as wolfram, a chemical element. It is a hard rare metal. When classifying Echo's weapon combat class, it is long-mid to close range. Meaning, she can either attack from close quarters, or from far away.

Weapon features:

Neptune: Neptune is a planet based digitize tool used to trap people within, Neptune can either be present, invisible, or encase the enemy without them knowing.

Neptune is a planet based ability. During each battle. Usually Neptune is invisible to the human eye, so it often floats above her or behind her during battles. Neptune can encase any user locking them in a digitized world where Echo will phase into. In Neptune Echo has complete control. In a sense Neptune is a weapon itself. Once trapped you will undergo multiple attacks from her and Neptune. If touched by electricity that appears as a dragon, your body will begin to break down. This is what it means to Transcend. If you happen to find a way to escape, then doing so should be immediate. The longer one stays in Neptune, the longer their body breaks down. The chances of getting out of Neptune is very low (20%) chance due to the make up of Neptune itself. Just like her original form, Neptune's outer wall is made up of nerves that are kept together forming a cube and a sphere surrounding that cube. Naturally you ask yourself, "aren't there holes." Over the cube/sphere is a thick transparent membrane that holds electricity. "Escape if you want to."

The special feature with Neptune, is that it can also encase a planet. Everything is made up of minerals, atoms, elements. Due to that fact, anything can be broken down. If its breakable, Echo can break it.

Error: Error can be used at anytime, can be multiplied, and can be used as defense and not just offense.

Error is an ability where several error signs show up around Echo. Echo is able to surround herself with this and flick each one to shoot you with a different power. The Error sign's can charge themselves at you, or wrap themselves around you. If you are hit with a yellow error message, your body will digitize and once again Transcend.

"Can this to destroy a planet?" Yes. It can go in two ways.

1)The Error sign can wrap itself around the planet and squeeze it enough to where it burst. However one Error sign won't be enough, so this attack wouldn't be recommended to take out a planet.

2)If it gets hit with a yellow error message, it will break apart like trying to rip apart a rubix cube. This also takes too long, so it's not recommended for taking out planets. It is however great for killing people, and is the fastest way.

It all depends on how big the object is.

Digitize: Digitize can shift into any weapon

.Digitize: Digitize can shift into any weapon

This is a weapon where anything can shift into any type of tool. The standard look is a long sword, but digitized. It can shift into an axe, a gun, two swords, a knife, a spear, and a scythe. If struck by this weapon while it emits a purple hue then your body will digitize, and you will transcend.

This can not be used to take out planets, more so people than anything. It can be used to destroy buildings, but what fun is that.

How does one activate the device?

After its creation, a wake up device was planted in the back of its neck right before the top of the spine is located. The wake up device has a set time, date, hour, second, and year that it will activate. You know nothing of this device nor the doctor. You sit at home eating your plain soup and realize the sky has darkened. Before you can put another spoonful into your mouth, your body has digitized and your life is over.

This is how it will all start. Just a normal day, eating some normal food, and then BAM your demise has hit you faster then you can blink.

Is there any way to stop or destroy it?

Unless your well versed in the knowledge of making an Ai, understanding its components, then no. Even if you are, you'd have to understand that it is a constant learning Ai, which means whatever you do the first time, won't work a second time. That also lets you know, that because its constantly learning, it's also constantly evolving. Chances of you finding a way to stop it in time, is like a 2% chance.

The Ai was designed to move faster than humans and other computers, like other countries super computers. Once she awakens, you might as well just take your life. Fat chance of anyone stopping it.

What is the scale of the destruction it causes?

Planetary. Once shes done with the planet she was birthed on, she'll move to others to find more materials.

The Snow

How does your doomsday device destroy things?
The Snow, as it is colloquially known throughout the land, is a floating mass of tiny flakes, closely resembling the appearance of regular clouds. The Snow is propelled forwards with an artifical breeze, but the speed of the cloud is kept up by the tiny flakes having a soft magnetic pull on each other, keeping them together as a cloud and continually going forward. When a signal is sent out, the flakes increase their magnetism and they lump together until they are heavy enough to fall from the sky. When come into contact with a biological form, they awaken. They are in reality, cells, genetically modified over hundreds of years for destruction. The instant they touch life, secrete an acid then do what all cells do. Eat, and reproduce. Humans, animals and plants alike are eaten alive, and the more they eat, the more of them to eat more. To add more into the eqaution, about 1/5000 reproduced cells are launched off their current lifeform's body, hopefully, or not so hopefully in the victims point of view, onto another life-form. Once all of the food is gone on a host, they settle down and begin to revert back into their flake form, leaving the area covered in white, like snow (from where comes the name.) This remains for a couple of days, any unsuspecting passerby walking across will find themselves suffering the same fate as the others. After this time, a stronger magnetic force pulls them into small, compact clumps and 'deactivate', going into a deeper stasis where the user can collect these to use again, and in greater number.

What is the scale of the destruction it causes?
It varies on the size of the clouds, the most massive occurence of The Snow was on a rebelling village who got close to toppling the Regime. The Snow destroyed their village, and their supplies, but most of all, the men and women that ran to bravely save the others died as well, adding up the death toll to nearly ten thousand.

How does one activate the device?
The Snow is activated in the depths of the heavily defended Regime Headquarters. The computer system then loads the scheduled attack, and at that time, releases The Snow in the general direction of the target, and then sends a signal to activate the downpour.

Is there any way to stop or destroy it?
In order to stop The Snow, you have to either stop the controller activating the scheduled attack, delete the attack from the mainframe, or at last resort, if The Snow is already out, destroy the system to stop it activating on target. All of these are harder than they sound.

Name: The Plagues

Method(s) of Destruction: Once unleashed, the device recreates the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse mentioned in the Bible. First, it will tamper with international systems to start a destructive World War. Then, it will unleash a superbug that will be resistant to even the best treatments in the world. Then, it will unleash a swarm of insects to destroy all food supplies and contaminate them with the superbug, which will be 100% lethal by that point.

Destruction Scale: International

How it is activated: Usually with a built-in timer, but can be activated by error or with a switch

How to destroy the device: Delete the timer from the system files, infect it with a virus to destroy critical files, or destroy the switch.

The Bridge

Some quick general backstory: In the novel I'm writing, the main character is your stereotypical fantasy villain. He is constantly coming up with new schemes, plots, weapons, and ideas that will bring his enemies to ruin. Now, there are these other beings in the world far worse than him: ancient Gods who dwell in more dimensions than just our three, beings of enormous size that defy the laws of reality as we know them. Many eons ago these beings were imprisoned, locked away. One such was exiled to a distant moon, far far away...

How does your doomsday device destroy things?
It does not directly destroy. The Bridge is a magical device that allows distance over very long distance via the creation of a pocket-dimension. In this instance, the Bridge will be used to teleport an ancient God from his celestial prison and onto earth's surface. That God himself (itself?) is gargantuan in size- think Godzilla, a tarasque, Cloverfield. Cities will crumble under step. In addition to its sheer size and ferocity, the God can bend reality to his will. Water will flow backward, metal will rust away into nothing, and stone will become malleable.

What is the scale of the destruction it causes?
Massive. Again, the Bridge itself causes no destruction, but that which it summons is impossibly destructive. Entire cities would be destroyed, ecosystems turned upside-down, and general apocolyptia brought upon the world.

How does one activate the device?
A skilled magician would be required. In order to summon such a creature, the magician must know its location in the night sky (no easy feat), and then must metaphysically align the Bridge with the prison. Once activated, the God should have a direct escape route from its prison (though it is recommended the magician flee the scene before its arrival).

Is there any way to stop or destroy it?
Both The Bridge and the God can be destroyed. The Bridge is a delicate thing- one missing metaphysical component and the entire thing can collapse in upon itself, potentially killing the operator. The God, despite its title and power, is still an organic creature. In theory, drowning it in the oceans would work, as well as continuous fire from siege engines. These beasts were exiled en mass from Earth before, so it stands to reason that it could be accomplished again.

I think I really like your Expansions, Jorick. They're interesting and sometimes unexpected in a good way. So, here's a few Doomsday "devices" for this little exercise. All can be found within my own series, "The Wereverse"

Mycoprotista Helacyton
How does your doomsday device destroy things?
Assimilates organic material of any form and reshapes it into a form suited for terraformation or combat
What is the scale of the destruction it causes?
Biological, as it rewrites the entire food-web of an ecosystem, meaning everything is literally out to kill you
How does one activate the device?
The plague is self-activated and sentient
Is there any way to stop or destroy it?
Flames can slow Hela Beasts down, Electricity is one of a few things that can truly kill them, but the hardiness of the plague means this would take a while even if one were to deliver 1 terawatt of electricity into a single monster.

Strange Matter Bomb (In-universe: As gathered from schematics)
How does your doomsday device destroy things?
Upon detonation, it produces strangelets, which are strange particles, that knock particles off of atoms and absorb said particles, then eject more strangelets upon reaching a certain mass
What is the scale of the destruction it causes?
Planetary, an out-of-control fusion-fission scenario of stable Strange Matter converts almost any stellar object (stars, planets, moons, asteroids...) into a quark star, save for Black Holes. Requires contact with other objects to instigate conversion, thus why it is currently given the "Planetary" rank of danger.
How does one activate the device?
As the device does not store Strange Matter inside itself due to the hazard that presents and must instead create it from existing matter, the device can be activated if directly exposed to a high-energy source, after which a code is required to activate the device. As the code is written in a long-dead language, only a select few could activate it.
Is there any way to stop or destroy it?
Pray it is never built and/or never needed. Theoretically, a sufficient amount of Antimatter equal to the amount of Strange Matter currently existing could annihilate it as Strange Matter is still a form of baryonic matter.

How does your doomsday device destroy things?
Quite simple, the device keeps spawning potatoes till the entire world is crushed beneath a hail of them.
What is the scale of the destruction it causes?
WORLD WIDE DESTRUCTION!
How does one activate the device?
By simply growing a natural potato and shoving it into the hole.
Is there any way to stop or destroy it?
Same thing, but it's going to be a lot more harder since you can't take a spawned potato. Doing so will result in all future potatoes into becoming highly murderous, intelligent beings capable of outsmarting your typical mook.
