When a race is preoccupied with its physical survival and building up its power, some things are inadvertently left behind and forgotten. Things such as ancient history and the like, which were left buried on the original Terra, forever to be lost under the malicious terraformation. And when things are lost, there always come people, who seek them out, one way or another. Gaius Chernev is such a person!
Despite being a graduate of the TRAIDA (Terran Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Development Academy), his passion had always been history - ever since he was a child. There wasn't any chance for him to hone his passion, though, since the history taught at school was an abridged version and he soon found out that the extended version wasn't overly extended either. After the mandatory military training, which was a terrible experience for him due to putting too much emphasis on the physical qualities he so much lacked, ended his father - Boris Chernev - a professor of Applied mathmatics, who worked on a variety of governmental projects aiming at producing new technologies - was adamant "The Terran Federation doesn't need story tellers, son." he said "You have a great intellectual potential and should apply it where it will bring most benefits to our civilization." At the frail age of 21, Gaius could hardly put up an argument against that and thus enrolled into the academy, studying Applied quantum and molecular physics - a study which he finished with flying colours.
Nevertheless, while there, the young man also managed to grow as a person and put forward his goals, which had nothing, or at least very little, to do with the world of physics. Thus, much to the displeasure of his father, he used his graduation fund (an amount of money, scaling with the diploma grades, that the government gave to all who graduated from higher education so as to kickstart their careers) in order to travel around the colonies and gather data from both digitalised libraries, public records and the people themselves. Since the money wasn't enough, his father, reluctantly, had to also support him for a time despite dismissing his son's efforts as a youth's naive flight of fancy. Nevertheless, after about four years of research and a colossal amount of passing together of different pieces of data and drawing own conclusions, Gaius published his first book - "Where did we come from? A complete description of the Ancient world from the Stone through the Bronze Ages", which was immediately embraced by the scientific community and is nowadays treated as the most complete record man kind has of its most ancient history, since the majority of the latter was inadvertently lost with the loss of the original planet. Moreover, Gaius used advanced computer simulations to reconstruct images of places such as the gates of Babylon, the gardens of Semiarid or the pyramids of Egypt that filled in the book and are widely used in public education today. Despite his lack of formal education or authority in the field, a work so all-encompassing couldn't be disregarded - in fact the average citizen's knowledge of human ancient history is now solely based on Gaius' research.
His popularity still in its peak, he settled onto a more challenging, although not so fruitful journey - recording the secret symbolism and occult doctrines of the ancient and medieval world. This time he had the fund to support himself due to his earlier success having made him a modestly rich man and he abused that privilege to its full potential, spending a total of seven years, in which he made two updates over his first research and published his second book, called Mystery and fable: the secret teachings and doctrines of our ancestors. While people perceived this as a mere interesting reading and the scientific community placing its seal of approval, no one really regarded this work as highly as the first one, despite the time end effort dedicated. No one buy Gaius, that is. He regarded the ancients' obsession with stars and celestial bodies as a deeper enigma and thus declared himself to be the starter of a new branch of science - space archaeology.
When Gaius expressed his intention to formally take up space archaeology and even more so - to elevate it to the level of science rather than his own idiosyncrasy, his aspirations became the laughing stock of the scientific community - "There is nothing to study! Just dead space and high-tech hermit kingdoms." they said, dismissing any chances of this field ever taking off. Having learned to live with public disapproval, Gaius wasn't discouraged a tiny bit. He gathered some supporters and started several expeditions to the neighbouring empires, with varying degrees of success. Nothing was heard of him for many years, however when his latest book finally broke ground, it all but overshadowed the success of the first. Gaius' records and research of the ancient and modern history of various alien conglomerates are, until this date, the only official such data that the TF has. Despite the gravity of the achievement, though, Gaius was credited only as a good researcher, but utterly bashed and discredited as a scientist, because of the conclusions he drew from his research of the other worlds. His theorems, stated at the end of the book as a conclusion, were scandalising and, despite not being disproven, were judged to be little more than the mumblings of a mind too concerned with fiction and influenced by ancient epics rather than sound reason. Those were as follows:
- Due to the excessive overlapping of a variety of details, both of symbolic, metaphorical and metaphysical nature, in the occult doctrines of our ancestors and the alien conglomerate worlds, as described throughout my research insofar, we are left with no other option by to assume either contact with the same advanced entities or a common creator/ruler for all ancient human and alien nations alike. Whichever the case, the same highly advanced being or beings have had explicit and tangible interactions with the beginnings of every civilisation of the thus recorded.
- We have reasons to believe that aliens and humans share the same genome. Nevertheless, humanity is the only race to forge a federation on its own and bolster such a wide variety of cultures and teachings, which serves to indicate that different human races share genome with different alien ones, as described in the glossary henceforth
While these conclusions weren't accepted by the human scientific community, another such community was quite interested in them. Gaius Chernev was contacted by a group calling themselves the Ashen Verdict - an unorthodox group of scientists from many different highly-advanced worlds, working together to uncover the origin of all life in the galaxy and the reasons for the similarities that Gaius found so striking. Usually only much older or more advanced races had grown enough in consciousness to ask these questions and be ready to receive answers, as painstaking as those could be when compared to traditional belief systems, from where their motto - "There is no religion, higher than the Truth" stemmed. Needless to say, Gaius was the only human member of the organisation and the first human to learn of its existence. Their encounter was quite bizarre, actually - similar to the alien abduction stories of the past. As Gaius was having dinner at his apartment, two different beings with the same insignia beamed themselves next to his table and asked for an audience, apologising for their rather crude manners, as they were utterly unfamiliar with the human customs. To Gaius' queries as to how they had escaped the planet's radar system and the surrounding fleet, they explained that during their quest for truth, the Verdict had come across technologies that were above the baseline, even for advanced races, which the humanity was not. After conversing for hours on end, Gaius was more than happy to join them and was allowed access to the Ashen database, his task being to transcribe and match his finding of the human ancestry, mysticism and genome to what the group already knew, thus both expanding their knowledge and most effectively enlarging his own. He was warned against using implants, as they had the function of eroding the left brain's reach and possibilities and was handed a certain device.
Following the encounter, Gaius made quick press statement, describing those events, which led some to think him even crazier than he was already, after which he travelled to Colony Gallileo where he could conduct his studies of the enormous database in peace and quiet. Or so he though...
Trait 1: Seeker of the lost lore Highly experienced researcher, scientist and negotiator, spend the majority of his life solving and looking into things that were previously considered unsolvable
+1 Intelligence
Trait 2: Free thinker Experienced at overcoming adversity, distrust, disbelief and negativity, able to persuade people and think critically, both of which on the fly, as has been required for him in his numerous public discussions or sticky situations on alien worlds
+2 Courage
Trait 3: The Space Archeologist A renown public figure, albeit considered eccentric or downright weird by many, he is still one of the most highly respected minds of his time, making people much more willing and likely to listen to him as well as slightly more likely to get preferential treatment by virtue of his perceived genius. He is also likely to be recognised by most of the human characters or NPCs, if not by face, then at least by name.
Trait 4: Member of the Ashen Verdict - the Verdict doesn't get involved in conflicts, it merely seeks the Truth, but it also doesn't tend to abandon its own. I do not intend to have someone come and rescue him (lest you think it'd be a cool plot device) but the Verdict is a well-known, enigmatic, powerful and certainly very, very respected organisation amongst most of the alien world, especially the ones that are more developed. Membership of the organisation is sure to tremendously elevate a human's status in the eyes of any race, with all the bonuses stemming from that.
Trait 5: Veni, vidi, intelligi - from running complex simulations using a supercomputer, to persuading alien officials to allow him passage into their sacred sites and trying to make sense of the latter on his own, because of having been denied a translator, to memorizing intricate details of ancient stories for days on end, so that he could write them down in the exact manner later on, to finally coping with and integrating the frighteningly insightful revelations of the Ashen Verdict's database - Gaius Chernev has been there and has done it all. He has had to become incredibly well-versed in radically different fields of knowledge in order to try and unify them in the end, that his frame of thought and scope of mind are quite possibly the most transcendent of all of human kind to date (this is not to say other humans or AI are not better in specific fields or aspects than him, but his strength comes from intertwining them together). This trait has multiple aspects - his way of thinking would usually transcend the ways and patterns of thinking, that other humans would consider normal, which could result in friction and discontent, or - on the contrary - may seem amazingly insightful.
+1 Intelligence
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trait 6: (Technically not) A Doctor [cosmetic trait] - despite never obtaining the proper university certification in the field of his exploits and thus never technically earning the title of doctor, every reference to him and his work, even those made by his critics, refers to him as Dr. Gaius Chernev. On the cover of his books, he insisted on his name being spelled without the honorific title, nevertheless any and all references to his works, including those in the public education textbooks, are references to Dr. Gaius Chernev's research. Ergo, a sort of impromptu unwritten agreement has been established in the academic circles to ascribe him the doctorly status so appropriate to his contribution and achievements.

Equipment List:
Ashen beacon - an almost indestructible device, allowing its owner full access to the Ashen verdict's database. The data stream is accessed by means of a concentrated thought and is given either telepathically or through visual representation.
Seal of the Ashen Verdict - a small, ellipsoid object that is running on free energy and is adjusted to protect its owner from all harm by means of shielding his physical and astral body against any potential hostile impact. This means it is also capable of stopping telepathic and sonic attacks. Extremely advanced technology, the limits of which are unknown. How to activate it is also not explicitly conveyed to him, however from what he knows about the Verdict so far, he gathered that it is probably going to react upon following his thought or instinct.
A standard government issue handgun.
The clothes he is wearing, as shown on the picture.
His personal, customised laptop, put in a backpack.
Signature: Will if I must.... Aleksandar
Extra: If it would please the court: a theme song for my character
P.S.: If my character is approved, I'd like to get matched in a group with Laura and Tharvax for the intro, since I think these to be some of the more interesting characters so far.
Also, I think it may be interesting for Dr. Gaius Chernev and Admiral Ariston Tychon to be matched in two separate groups and sort of leading them, so that the two leadership styles could collide when everyone is united in the end - like in every classical sci-fi. That's provided everyone agrees, of course.
