THE RIFT OF BELLMOORE
NOVEMBER 17TH WEDNESDAY @ 12 NOON TO 3PM CENTRAL TIME

It's the middle of summer and the heat is blistering in a little New England Coastal town called Bellmoore. Despite the sunshine, no one dares go down to the beach and few locals are seen strolling around the town streets. Tourists, though, love coming to Bellmoore hoping to catch sight of one of the spooky urban legends or experience the odd earthquakes that've plagued the area in the past ten years.

Little does everyone know, the town of Bellmoore sits on top of a Hell Rift and tonight Hell is going to break loose.

EVENT INFO

WHO: Everyone is invited! Character Bios/Pics are not required, but totally encouraged! Post 'em if you got 'em.

WHAT: This is a modern supernatural setting featuring demonic and angelic themes! You can play anything that'd fit in that sort of setting.

WHERE: Join us in the BELLMOORE chat room. You'll find the link to our chats in the CHAT tab when it's time to play.

HOW: This is a ACTION PACKED SETTING WITH IMPROVISATIONAL GAME MASTERING. That means the object of this roleplay is to interact with other characters, and from those interactions I will create a plot and story around you. There may be action moments, where strange events will happen and your characters will have to work together to resolve it. With this ChaRP "lol random" behaviors are discouraged -- what your character says and does will have in game consequences, so choose wisely!

My roleplays are always NEWBIE FRIENDLY so even if you are terrible at roleplay or have never participated in a ChaRP before, this will be easy for you to get involved in. :D Ask questions, let me know when you need help. I often give tips and direction out of character in the main chat room when people need a little direction.

EASY CHARP TIPS!

Try to show up a good 10 to 15 minutes before the ChaRP is to begin. That way you can read up on any important info, and it makes it easier for your GM to know how to start off the ChaRP when there's a head count.

Don't worry if another player is doing something similar to your idea. DO IT ANYWAY! Similarities and things in common happen in real life too. Everyone also plays differently, so two characters who are both "sweet and shy" will still end up being totally unique people. Two assassins could create a fun and interesting conflict!

Talking to other players about their character before the roleplay is a GREAT way to create connections and background for your own!

Post SHORT AND FAST. Charps are very quick pace and contain a LOT of players. Players can't wait 20 minutes for you to write a wall of text, and if there's too much text they won't be able to read it fast enough and will MISS details. If it takes you longer than two minutes to type your post, you are taking too long and might get lost in the action. This is an exercise in quick and concise writing!

Make sure your character name is mentioned in every post, close to the start of it if possible. This is especially helpful when there's many players, so we know who is playing what character.

Like in Real Life, a character may not be able to acknowledge or notice your character immediately because they are engaged in doing something else. (For example a new character walking in to the room, but the other characters arguing about muffins and do not see them.) Don't get discouraged if you go can't get someone to interact with you right away. Just keep posting and doing actions with your character, or even approach others who also seem to be idle and it WILL happen.

Do not take events in the roleplay personally or assume that bad reactions are because they think you/your character sucks. Everyone is playing a character and reacting to things as their character would!

1636723119144.pngName: Valerian Solis
Age: 25

Valerian is a "rogue scholar" of ancient and classical history who has published unconventional theories on the esoteric and mystical beliefs of the ancient world. He leads tours to mysterious places such as ancient Egypt, and megalithic sites in Europe, Central, and South America.

He is also a practitioner of the historical European martial arts of the rapier and longsword.

He is insatiably curious, and goes through life with a high-energy "the game is afoot!" attitude.

Name: Amberly Miller
Age: 14
Personality:

Amberly has always been quiet and shy, not one to make waves. There doesn't seem to be anything particularly remarkable about her, except for her ability to fade into the background. Since her father's death and her brother Cameron's departure from school, a cloud of sadness has hovered over her, which is apparent whenever Cameron isn't around. It is only in his presence that she laughs or smiles, but even then there is a certain brittle fragility to her happiness.

Amberly has always felt that she is a burden to her family, an expense they cannot afford. She utterly adores her older brother, and looks up to him as a hero, but she also blames herself for the fact that he had to drop out of school. She's the reason Cameron will end up working in dead-end jobs for the rest of his life when he can find jobs at all, the reason he can't spend more time with friends or going out on dates. Simply by existing, she has single-handedly ruined the life of the person she is closest to, and she has to keep her guilt hidden deep inside, from him most of all. That, and her thoughts of how much better off he'd be, if she was dead.

Bio:

Amberly was born into poverty. She's always been at the bottom of the social totem pole at school. At home, she has been very sensitive to the fact that anything she might need or want had to come out of a budget with not enough money in it. Whenever she was sick or injured, she'd try to hide it, pretend she was fine. Once when she was eight years old, she got ruptured eardrums, but kept it to herself thinking it was just an earache and would go away. Her family was having a rare getaway, an overnight trip to Bellmoore. Amberly pretended as long as she could, until she could no longer hide the fact that she was in pain. Her parents asked her for an explanation, and pressed for an answer until she finally relented and told them. They took her to the doctor. She received treatment, and had no lasting damage to her hearing. She still felt horrible about ruining the family trip, though she never said anything about that to anyone, even Cameron.

A year ago, her father died, and Cameron dropped out of school so he could take a full-time job to try and help the family make ends meet. This hit her like a hammer to the face, though she does her best to hide the pain. Not only has she lost her father, she's destroyed any hope Cameron might have for a better life. Her vague understanding of how to get out of poverty and make it in the world consists of "stay in school, get good grades, go to college," and Cameron has lost his chance at that, because of her. Her own grades are only passable, and she can't really visualize a good future for herself, or that she even deserves one.

This summer, Cameron was able to supplement his job with some gig work and save up a little extra money for a trip to Bellmoore with his friends. To Amberly's distress, her mother insisted that he take her along. He was happy to, but she feels like an unwanted tag-along, and wants him to be able to have a good time with his buddies.

It's the middle of summer in Bellmoore and the heat is blistering, even now close to sundown. Many small town shops are open, including a cafe and the local pub. Nearby the Bellmoore Carriage Tour will start soon, as well as the tour of the famous lighthouse out on the beach.

  • Zarko Straadi:
Valerian walked toward the lighthouse. He had spent the day in the town library making copies of old newspaper articles that seemed relevant to the local legends, looking for leads to track down. Several of the stories related to the beach, and it seemed the locals stayed away even on a hot summer's day. Perhaps if he could get a chance to talk to the lighthouse keeper, he might be able to get some firsthand information.

"Wait up, wait up!" called out Jimmy, a young boy barely 15 and who happened to be the young nephew of Jasmine Toulouse. A flu had prevented her from coming on the trip herself, and somehow her little nephew had invited himself along with the promise to take lots of pictures for her. "It sure is hot out here."

  • Diana:
The lighthouse was no longer in use to help ward ships off from crashing into the rocky cliffside, but to this day it was still maintained by a old local family. There was already a small group of tourists waiting outside as one of the guides scribbled down a head count on a clipboard.

  • Zarko Straadi:
Valerian chuckled to himself and slowed his pace so the boy could catch up. Normally he didn't have an "assistant" for his investigations, and he tended to move briskly once he caught the scent of something interesting. "That it is," he replied. "Hopefully you'll be able to get some good shots from the lighthouse."

  • Diana:
"Yeah! Auntie Jasmine says something neat always pops up on your trips," he responded, checking to make sure his camera was fully charged and had some backup batteries. He'd already taken lots of pictures of the town so far, and in HIS opinion the whole place was for sure haunted. He captured orbs!

  • Zarko Straadi:
"No, really, it's OK," Amberly said. "I'll be at the lighthouse. I can text you if I go anywhere else." "But...there are lots of spooky stories about this place," Cameron said. Amberly shrugged. "People just made them up to attract tourists," she said softly. "There wouldn't even be tourists if bad things really happened, would there?" "Come on, Cameron, she'll have more fun on her own anyway. Let's hit the pub!" Cameron had just turned 21, and his friends were also in their early 20's. "Please...go have fun," she said. "Alright, but if anything weird happens, anything at all, you call me, alright?" Amberly nodded, but inwardly she resolved not to call him no matter what. She waved goodbye, and headed toward the lighthouse. Peace came with solitude, and the fact that for once she wasn't being a burden. Suddenly, she heard an animated voice behind her. She startled and turned to see a man and a boy close to her age. Not feeling any need to beat the faster-moving pair to the line, she stepped aside to let them pass.

  • Diana:
Jimmy, being a boy of 15 with working eyes nearly tripped over his own damn self on passing a cute girl. He got it together quick though, because he was on an important family mission. Not just to take pictures for his poor sick Auntie, but to make sure this Valerian Solis was actually a cool dude and not some asshat like her last boyfriend. Of course that didn't stop him from looking over his shoulder, cheekily smiling and waving right at the girl - because you gotta shoot your shot right?

  • Diana:
"Welcome to the Bellmoore Lighthouse!" announced the tour guide once she had a full head count. She gave a brief introduction to herself, the town, and the building. It was one of the first buildings to go up when the town of Bellmoore was built. According to legend, it was built brick by brick by Thomas Bellmoore himself. "We won't only be touring the tower, but of the family home attached to it, as well as the secret passage leading down to the beach caves!"

  • Zarko Straadi:
"I go to interesting places," Valerian said, patting the boy on the shoulder. Hopefully not too interesting this time, he thought, seeing as he was taking responsibility for the boy. The last adventure he'd been on with teenagers had been more than most kids should be subjected to, though the ones who had borne the brunt of it had seemed able to handle themselves alright. Still, Jimmy reminded Valerian a lot of himself. Which was probably why "Auntie Jasmine" let him talk his way into this adventure. "Oh, excuse me!" he said to the girl, smirking a little at the way Jimmy checked her out. Then he noticed that she was all by herself. "Hey...would you like to join us?"

  • Zarko Straadi:
Amberly tried not to freeze up when the boy smiled and waved at her. She really tried. Was he making fun of her? That's what the boys at school did, when they noticed her existence at all. Then the man looked at her with keen eyes--not lecherous eyes, just the sort of sharp focus that didn't miss a thing. "Join you? Uh...OK," she said. They'd be grouped together on the tour anyway, and she could just hear Cameron saying, 'Go on! And hey, that boy is pretty cute.' Well, he wouldn't make the 'cute' comment about the boy. The boy had a bright eagerness about him, as if life for him was some exciting new discovery around every corner. Amberly wished she could feel that way...

  • Diana:
Auntie Jasmine's boyfriend definitely earned points in Jimmy's books. Once they got on their way into the tour and inside the building, Jimmy tried to (as nonchalantly as possible) saddle up to this girl and play it cool. "I'm Jimmy!" he blurted out, but he brought it back quick. "So uh, I'm trying to get pictures of ghosts. See?" He tilted his camera to show off some of the pictures he'd taken around town. There didn't seem to be anything of note in them, but he was proud. "Do you live around here? I don't-- but! I'm taking driving lessons and it won't be long before I have a car."

  • Zarko Straadi:
"...I'm Amberly," she said, barely audible. "I live in Shadyside." It was a town about a day away, far enough to make Bellmore a special trip. She couldn't see any ghosts or anything that resembled a ghost, but the pictures captured the eerie ambience of the locations. If he's going to get a car as soon as he can drive, he'd totally laugh if he saw my bike, she thought. "...You're a good photographer," she said, unable to come up with anything more eloquent.

  • Zarko Straadi:
Valerian noticed an air of melancholy about the girl, so he was glad to see Jimmy talking to her. With any luck, he'd be able to lift her spirits, and he would have more fun with someone his own age to hang out with. "I'm Valerian Solis," he said. "It's a pleasure to meet you Amberly." He directed his attention elsewhere, so as not to interrupt their conversation.

  • Diana:
In fact there was just the thing to tease and catch Valerian's attention while his girlfriend's young nephew chatted away with the girl. None of the other tourists noticed, nor did the guide point it out -- but there were faintly carved symbols along the frame of an inconspicuous door. It was just the sort of oddity Valerian was looking for.

  • Diana:
Jimmy, of course, had completely forgotten all about both of his missions. "Do you want to try it out? Taking pictures, I mean! It's actually really easy, you just try to get a nice balance of stuff in the frame that looks cool and y'know, lighting n' stuff." Jimmy offered Amberly his camera, not paying a lick of attention to what Valerian was getting up to.

  • Zarko Straadi:
Valerian leaned his sword-cane against the wall next to the door and used his own camera to take some pictures of the curious symbols. A glance toward Jimmy revealed that now would be the wrong time to point out the symbols to him. Amberly gingerly took Jimmy's camera. Don't drop it! She knew next to nothing about cameras, but she figured it would cost waaaaay too much for her to hope to replace if she fumbled it. "Would...would you like me to take a picture of you?" She couldn't quite meet Jimmy's eyes. Then she noticed that his dad (probably his dad?) was taking close-up pictures of a door frame, but she couldn't see what garnered his interest, since his body was in the way.

  • Diana:
"Yeah, sure!" Jimmy eagerly stepped back and posed -- two finger guns and an over exaggerated wink, right in front of a console table sporting a taxidermized racoon and a painting of a really old sea captain. It didn't occur to him at all that he looked like the least cool dude on the planet. "How's this? All you have to do is aim and press the button!"

  • Zarko Straadi:
The sigils were clusters of wedge-shaped marks. Is that Sumerian cuneiform? Valerian thought. He recognized two of the characters: 𒍪𒀊 Abzu, a primordial deity of the deep ocean, and also a word for the watery abyss itself. He'd need to get his laptop to translate the rest, or at least look at them long enough to fish enough of the other characters out of his memory to get the jist.

  • Zarko Straadi:
It didn't occur to Amberly either. If anything, the cringe effect made her feel a little more comfortable in his presence. She raised the camera and took a shot, then gathered her courage to speak: "Maybe...try to look scared? That stuff behind you is really creepy..."

  • Diana:
"Scared?" Jimmy adjusted, hooking up his arms like a T-Rex and pulling a face that looked more like HE was a zombie, rather than someone actually afraid of anything. Then he got curious enough to look behind him at the table and the painting. The sea captain seemed a bit unhinged and had those eyes that looked almost real. "That must be old Thomas Bellmoore or one of his sons. On the pamphlet it said almost every eldest son ended up having a cliff accident. It's kinda weird."

  • Zarko Straadi:
Amberly got the picture of zombie-Jimmy, her lips flickering in the briefest, tiniest hint of a smile. "A...'cliff accident?' Nervously, she moved closer to Jimmy, in theory so she could take pictures of the raccoon and the sea captain. Valerian raised an eyebrow and turned toward Jimmy. He really didn't want to disturb the teenagers, but...the game was afoot! "You said almost every firstborn son? Would you happen to remember who the exceptions were?"

  • Diana:
"Uuuh," Jimmy had to stop and think about that one. Wait! He still had the pamphlet! He dug around in his pockets until he pulled out the rumpled up paper, then unfolded it and examined the text until he found what he was looking for. "Uuuh, oh here it is. Every first born Bellmoore son died, except for Frederick Bellmoore. It says he did end up falling off the ledge of the cliff and disappeared for three weeks. But he washed up on shore and claims he doesn't remember what happened."

  • Zarko Straadi:
"So he's still alive?" Valerian said. Amberly looked from Jimmy to Valerian. The man had a curious intensity about him, as if he were engaged in some actual investigation rather than just gawking around like a tourist.

  • Diana:
"Yes. I'm alive," said the man himself, stepping out from behind that very door with the strange symbols Valerian had been examining only moments before. He was almost the mirror image of the unhinged captain in the painting, if not a few decades older. "But I won't be for long. ...and neither will you."

  • Diana:
DUN DUH DUUUUN! What did the old man mean? How was he still alive! FIND OUT NEXT TIME ON.... THE RIFT OF BELLMOORE.
