Fascinating game! I'm not sure if I'll have time to join or not, but I had some ideas, so I'm going to lob them out here for you to use or not, as you choose.

Conjure (Process): The art and science of creating an Egregore. Requirement: Advanced hacking/computer science skill (this should be in a character's bio). With this Process, a hacker can create an autonomous digital entity equipped with cyberkinetic Processes he or she has, and task it with missions.

Egregore:

An Egregore (sometimes called a Servitor) is a semi-intelligent program capable of autonomous operation, and carrying out cyberkinetic Processes ("Conjured" Egregores only) at the command of a User. An Egregore is comparable to an NPC in a computer game, but considerably more sophisticated given current technology. It can read and speak in natural language, and navigate the virtual, and to some extent physical worlds (such as "seeing" through surveillance cameras, "feeling" RFID chips, communicating with "smart" appliances, etc.) independently. Egregores are generally created around some mythic or narrative archetype, such as a fairy, genie, cartoon character, or historical person. This makes it possible for standard Emulators [Emulator: a software program, often standardized, which models humanlike personalities for software agents] to generate simplified interactive personalities for Egregores from distributed information on the Grid, rather than requiring the Egregore to be a fully self-contained AI (with the correspondingly high storage and bandwith requirements that would imply). An Egregore based on a cartoon character would have a personality modeled on the cartoon character's. A "fire elemental" Egregore would have a hot-tempered personality, and so forth. An Egregore's persona is usually related to its function. For example, a Conjured "fire elemental" Egregore might be programmed with various hacking exploits that can be used for arson, such as disabling fire suppression systems, triggering a gas leak by opening a valve in a gas line, then generating an overload in the valve's control circuit to create a spark.

There are two kinds of Egregores: Off the Shelf (OTS) and Conjured.

OTS Egregores:
An OTS Egregore is the product of a software company or open-source development team, which can be purchased or downloaded by ordinary citizens or companies. Examples might include AR receptionists, museum docents, cartoon character virtual friends for children, personal assistants, and so forth. OTS Egregores might be able to operate equipment (such as an Egregore bellhop driving a self-powered luggage trolley in a hotel, or a security Egregore operating cameras and monitor drones), and may be coded with passive Processes like Firewall (security and cashier OTS Egregores would likely have this) but they cannot use an active Process like Command. Closed-source OTS Egregores are nearly always strongly copyrighted and write-protected to prevent hackers from repurposing them (such as, to prevent a Mickey Mouse Egregore from saying or doing obscene things, or a Geico Gecko from being used to recommend Progressive insurance).

Conjured Egregores ("Conjurations"):
A Conjured Egregore is one that is created by a skilled programmer for personal use. Unlike OTS Egregores, a Conjured Egregore is a unique creation crafted to be loyal to its creator. A Conjuration usually has a much more sophisticated AI than OTS Egregores do, and may be programmed to use any Process the programmer possesses. Given the right Processes, a Conjured Egregore may be tasked with attacking a particular person or Site. In general, a Conjuration can employ adaptive tactics if it is programmed well enough, but cannot make top-level strategic decisions. For example, if a hacker tells an Egregore to use cyberattacks on a particular person when that person is alone, it can notice that there are others present and wait until they leave or arrange for some kind of distraction to draw them away, but it cannot decide to attack some other target or come up with a different plan to accomplish its maker's goals.

Conjurations are something of a status symbol for hackers, who will sometimes have them be visible as companions in other people's AR, the way powerful people in previous ages liked to show off with an escort of harem girls, bodyguards or slick lawyers.

Golem:
A Golem is a special-purpose Egregore that is permanently linked to some physical substrate, like a squadron of hover-drones, a robot, a vehicle, or an especially complex weapon system like a suit of powered combat armor.

Conjuration (Golem): the art and science of creating a Golem. Requirements: Conjure, a suitable physical substrate, and knowledge of the relevant areas of robotics operation (i.e., to Conjure a quadcopter Golem, the programmer must be able to program the Golem for flight, or have the skills to integrate an off the shelf flight subroutine into their Golem's code and insure that it's compatible with the hardware).

Black Market Conjurations:

There are some black market operators who claim to offer Conjurations for sale. These are usually very expensive, especially if they have combat-relevant abilities and Processes (Caveat Emptor applies, in spades). A character who purchases a black market Conjuration might be able to get one with Processes they do not have (but which the Conjuration's original programmer has), but this is risky. One can never really know what sort of "back doors," malware, bugs, or delayed-action instructions a black market Conjuration might contain. In game terms: the GM has the right to take control of a purchased Conjuration at any time, and have it carry out some hidden intention of its creator, or just randomly malfunction in some awkward or perhaps severely unpleasant way. Or it might simply be a spy for the Enforcers, the Agents of God, or whomever the GM chooses, continually monitoring its "owner" on behalf of its true masters. Black Market Conjurations are the cyber equivalent of buying a high-tech designer drug from some shady guy on a street corner. Caveat. Emptor.

Well, that's all I've got for now. If I come up with a character idea I like in time I'll join, but you don't have to wait for me.

Oh my goodness, I'm so interested and I'm not done reading all the details, haha. Room for another?

Yep--We have at least a few days left until the IC.

Name: Briar Rose Dalrymple
Age: 28 (appears to be 10 years old, see Bio)
Gender: Female
Appearance:

tumblr_m4yc4xbrKR1qci6yk_zpsfe355823.jpg

Briar Rose dresses in an extra-tweedy version of British Schoolgirl Chic. Her hair, clothes, and whatever she's carrying are nearly always in a general state of disarray.

Personality:

Briar Rose is highly intelligent, though she often seems to have the attention span of a gnat. Her mind is constantly leaping from one thing to another. Her notebooks and e-papers are always in a complete state of disarray, yet somehow she is able to actually find things (unless someone "tidies up" for her!). She quickly loses herself in reading, writing, research projects, and tinkering with inventions in varying stages of partial completion.

She is easily intimidated, since most everyone is bigger, stronger, and often meaner than she is. She has difficulty dealing with people directly (i.e., in "meatspace") because they often treat her like a child (after all, she looks and sounds like one). Seeing other people engaging in happy romances pains her, since she cannot physically grow into adulthood.

Briar Rose's Interface sometimes gives her synesthesia and causes her to see malevolent "astral" creatures other people don't (she calls them "Little Nasties" and tries her best to ignore them). In the most intense episodes, it triggers a release of DMT from her pineal gland, sending her off on "far out" trips to strange "alternate realities" for as much as ten minutes of real time. Subjectively, these "journeys" can seem much longer, or even grant an experience of timeless Eternity. These experiences have led her to an interest in metaphysics, consciousness, and Applied Theology (see Bio).

As much as she loves the new technolgies, Briar Rose also has a fondness for the styles, aesthetics, and manners of previous eras, such as the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her style of dress reflects this, as does the decor of her apartment, which includes Victorian style carved wood paneling and tall bookcases stuffed with old-fashioned paper books.

Augmentations:

Mathematics Coprocessor: This brain implant gives Briar Rose the ability to calculate at computer speed and run mathematical models in her mind. In short, she never needs a calculator, and her imagination has a physics engine.

Memory Prosthesis: This augmentation to her Interface gives Briar Rose a digital eiditic memory.

Synbio Package: This is a set of synthetic biology genetic modifications and "augments" that were installed in her childhood in order to overcome the debilitating aspects of her condition (see Bio). They do not provide any enhancements beyond the "normal" human range of ability.

Robotic hand: Her right hand is robotic. Its look and performance is close to that of her biological hand, however it can be swapped out and replaced with compatible Hand Tools (below).

Nanofiber Muscular Enhancements: The muscles of her right arm have been enhanced with nanofibers similar to those used for strength enhancement, but these provide incredibly fine motor control and stability instead, so that Briar Rose can use her Hand Tools (below) with the required degree of precision. They do not enhance her strength.

Hand Tool (repair suite): The latest high-tech equivalent of the Leatherman multitool and the Swiss Army Knife, this Hand Tool has an Omnitool thumb (a motorized nanomaterial tool that can shape itself into any sort of screwdriver bit, hex key, socket wrench, pen knife blade, etc. of ordinary size), a Bush Manipulator index finger (a fractally branching nano-robotic manipulator whose finest "fingertips" are small enough to directly work with micro- and nano-engineered devices, such as microchips, microelectromencanical systems [MEMS], and so on. Its third finger is an all-purpose logic probe and diagnostic tool for micro- and nano-circuitry (digital multimeter, etc.). Its pinky finger is an input-output jack, and the middle finger offers a set of soldering iron tips that can solder on an ordinary (small) scale, down to the scale of miniaturized circuitry.

Hand Tool (all-purpose fabrication): This Hand Tool combines the functions of a CNC router (think of it as a miniaturized, computer-controlled Dremel tool) and 3D printer. Provided with the required Filament materials, the 3D printer can produce circuitry and small precision machine parts. Highly specialized Filaments (e.g. doped silicon, rare earths and other rare metals like gold or platinum in extremely fine purity) etc. are required in order to produce high-tech circuitry, though generally the quantities are small.

Limitations of Hand Tool Use: The use of Hand Tools requires full concentration through a Gridlink or Interface. if a user is interrupted, especially if they're startled or physically interfered with, it is likely that their project will be damaged or destroyed, depending on how delicate the work is. 3D printing is not instantaneous. Briar Rose's fabricator can produce a "bulk object" (solid material of any shape) the size of an average pill bottle in about a minute. Nanostructures, embedded circuitry, MEMS systems, and the like require increasing time with increasing complexity. Hand Tools also face the same limitations of energy faced by devices of their size.

Since Briar Rose has the body of a child, she must also special-order any new Hand Tools she would like to acquire instead of purchasing standard Hand Tools at a hardware store. Given [amount of time decided by GM], a hardware store can fabricate a special-order Hand Tool from digital plans.

Implant: Demigod.

Processes:
- [Interface]
- [Command]
- [Conjure]

Weaponry: None. Briar Rose also has no combat skills.

Biography:

Briar Rose was born with a rare and mysterious condition that retarded her physical growth and aging processes, as well as causing severe mental disability and impaired motor skills. The condition was not treatable by conventional medical technology. Her parents took her to Phoenix Electronics' synthetic biology division in the hope that they could help Briar Rose be able to live a normal life. The researchers at Phoenix saw in her condition the hope for a world-changing discovery: the key to a genetic Fountain of Youth.

Briar Rose was given a range of experimental treatments including injections of engineered DNA via tailored retroviruses. These treatments were able to reverse the worst symptoms of her condition, and she was able to start growing physically and mentally. In addition, she was given her Mathematical Coprocessor and Memory Prosthesis implants, and a Demigod interface.

However, when the "fall" of Phoenix took place, her treatments were interrupted. In the shakeup that followed, some of the key synthetic biology researchers were arrested, and the institutional knowledge underlying her treatment regimen was lost. As a result, her growth and aging stopped at an apparent age of ten.

The mental impairments she was born with were replaced with an almost manic intelligence. Her mind learned quickly, but just as quickly ran off in search of some other shiny item of knowledge. She performed poorly in school (especially as she moved into higher grades and became a target of bullying), but learned quickly once she was allowed to leave school and study with Egregore teachers through the Grid, since this approach allowed her to learn at her own pace and in her own way. She adapted so well to a cybernetic learning environment that upon high school graduation she received a full-ride scholarship to M.I.T.'s virtual campus (vM.I.T.).

Briar Rose took to the academic life like a fish to water. She now has doctorates in Computer Science and Applied Theology (the study of cybernetic deities, e.g. the Omnipotent and God Moders, and the implications of Transhumanist/Singularity technology for the human race). She is a professor of Applied Theology at vM.I.T., and also a student, currently taking courses in robotics and micro/nanoengineering. In pursuit of these latest interests, she had her right hand replaced with a robotic prosthesis so that it can be swapped out for useful Hand Tools. She is a noted scholar in her field, and her published works include Then Why Call Hir God? The Problem of Evil in the Age of the Omnipotent, Fermi's Paradox Revisited: Superhuman A.I. and the Great Silence, and Tech Gnosticism: The Promise and Peril of Techno-Spiritual Transcendence.

Briar Rose has also created a Conjuration, Ceridwyn Evenstar (below). "She" turned out a little more mischievous than Briar Rose anticipated, but she is nonetheless quite happy with, and proud of, her creation.

Conjuration:

Name: Ceridwyn Evenstar

Appearance: Ceridwyn manifests as a female adolescent Art Nouveau fairy with colorful stained-glass wings.

Personality: Cheerful, playful, and mischievous. (Mischief: the GM may, if desired, have Ceridwyn perform some harmless prank on Briar Rose or another character she is with when Ceridwyn is running. The general attitude is "all in good fun," not hurtful. Otherwise, I will RP this.)

Processes: [Command]

Other Notes:

Briar Rose owns a driverless Panther she can control through her Interface. She can "drive" it while she's in the vehicle or let it take her to her destination on autopilot. She can order it to go park itself (it can find a parking space on its own), go to a charging station to refuel, then park itself, and she can remotely order it to come to her from its parking space. She cannot do things like remote-control drive it and make it run over some particular target.

OT: Vansalon, I'm interpreting the "like" you gave my post on Egregores as approval of the concept for the game. If I'm wrong on that, please let me know and I'll edit Briar Rose's bio to remove those elements.

Yeah, I meant to respond to the Conjure idea sooner, but it totally slipped my mind.

I'll address that first.

I like the idea at concept, and really the only thing that's wrong with it is the Processes thing. Cyberkinetic Processes don't just mimic normal computer functions, they work in far more sophisticated in unique ways (even if the goal is the same) and interact differently with conventional technology. While Phoenix created the base concept, it was the Omnipotent who programmed the adaptation system that causes the generation of Processes in the first place, so they're unlike anything else humanity has seen. I'm going to use the idea, but I will modify it to separate Conjured Egregores and programmed Egregores (only Conjured ones will have Processes, while normally programmed ones will have a more inflexible sphere).
I also love the word "egregore"; it's a pretty obscure word (and doesn't exactly roll off the tongue) but it does fit very well. So I'm going to edit a few parts in the description before I transplant it to the first post, but good job on it overall!

Now, onto Briar Rose. Her parents certainly had a sense of humor.

My first thought was that the ageless thing was made up (I could still roll with it), but besides the article you linked I did a little digging and was surprised to find that it is certainly a thing. So, thumbs up on that!
The next thing I want to note is the memory prosthesis--While extremely advanced, brain interface technology isn't able to integrate itself so seamlessly as to augment memory. However, linked to Interface or a Gridlink, it could by storing those memories digitally. This means accessing them is more like pulling up a file (which, for a Cyberkinetic, is already closer to remembering something than for a Gridlink user) then recalling something. It still works but is a little more cumbersome and difficult to sort through quickly. The distinction likely won't be very relevant, but I did want to note that.
While technically the age limit for a Demigod is greater, Briar was under rather unique circumstances. It would take some bribery to get Phoenix to implant it (if they could afford the treatments in the first place the Rose family was rich enough to afford it anyway), but it's feasible enough that I'll let it slide.

Those are the only things that I wanted to clarify, good job overall! Accepted, I'll add the profile to the first post when I rewrite Conjure and Imbue (I prefer to keep Process names a single word, the only exception being God Mode, so I'm renaming Conjuration: Golem).

Any idea as to when the IC will be up? Just curious.

I'm going to talk to Kreska today and see if I can get a timeframe on his character. If not, I'll try to have it up by wednesday (I'm itching to start). In any event I'm not waiting past friday.

Thanks, I'm glad you like her bio. I can change her age to fit if you like. My calculations must be off, lol. From the first post, Project Demigod took place in the mid 2040's, and it's 2065 now (right?), so in order for her to be a child in ~2045 or so (i.e., a point at which her parents have noticed she's not aging and have sought cures elsewhere in vain), I put her birth year as 2037. I can add a few years if you prefer (it wouldn't affect her current state, AFAIK), or we can just let it slide. :)

99% of people with Cyberkinetic Implants were an adult when they were installed, because Phoenix usually drew the line at implanting prototype technology in children. Hence why they would have to be bribed.

I'm still drawing blanks on a character, but I don't want to be the one holding things up any longer since there are so many people who are excited to get this going. If you're ready to get started, go ahead and start without me. Sorry for keeping you waiting!

Alright, I'll try to get the IC up by wednesday. If you don't think of anything between now and then, I'll talk to you about ways a character could be fit in at a later point in the story, should you come up with anything.

Fucking hell, I accidentally reloaded the page and lost my char as I was almost done... I'll have it up tomorrow.

That's alright, I'll wait for you if need be.

I'm having serious technical issues with my PC at the moment, so it's up in the air if I'll actually be able to write the IC tomorrow. Hopefully.

EDIT:

On another note, do you guys think this would be an okay avatar? I don't like an avatar that shows this much skin, but I absolutely adore the fallen angel imagery.

I understand about PC problems- my laptop died last week due to a suspected hard drive problem, so I ended up having to buy a new laptop.

And I think that's pretty cool- while there is a lot of skin, it's nothing indecent, so I think it's fine!

@Zarko Straadi In my rewriting of Conjure and Imbue I decided that Egregores and Golems could only be granted certain Cyberkinetic Processes because of their limitations, and they can't have Interface because as digital entities they always operate in virtual reality, not augmented reality. I removed Interface from Ceridwyn, and I'd say you could give it a different Process but Conjure isn't legal either, so it will only have Command for now.

I've gotten some of the IC done, the first paragraph or so. I'm confident I can have it ready today if @Miss Flufferbutt is also ready when I am.

@Valentyne, I edited Ceridwyn as requested, and yeah, I should have put it in my description of Egregores that an Egregore can't Conjure an Egregore. :)

So we can't make Conjurers work like that Russian doll thing?

E19354_800.jpg

Can't have Egregore spawning Egregore spawning Egregore.
