The Carre family has long since been the owners of one of the largest publishing companies in the world. They are public figures with ties dating back to the prestigious upper-side families of the 19th century and for the most part, they are a close-knit group. But the world is never that black and white. Behind the scenes lays heartbreak, drama, and yes, love.

The recent tragedy of the deaths of the matriarch and patriarch of the family, Jane and Darwin, and their oldest daughter, Chantel, have brought the family and their affairs back into the spotlight. This also means that attention has been brought to all those associated with the family.

But through blood and through water, they will survive this difficult time.

They always do.

The old Carre mansion creaked. It'd been there for a little over a century, so it made sense, but Harvey never remembered it being this loud. Perhaps it was the silence from everything else. The house had never been this quiet growing up. The sounds of the family had always carried through the halls. Fourteen residents, not including the maids and butlers, filled it with sound. Laughter, music, footsteps. Arguments.

He lingered in his father's old study, leaning against the doorway. No one was allowed in this particular room. Not out of any malice, of course. There was just too many valuable things in here. Old books lining the shelves, antique china, momentos gathered over the years. He suspected that most of it would be sold off at an auction. Most of the family didn't have a need for old, worn possessions.

No, they all had their own lives now.

The house itself would go to Vincent, according to the will. That news surprised Harvey, at first, but it made sense after awhile. His nephew was the only one willing to inherit the Carre Publishing House, so he would, of course get the Carre mansion as well. Perhaps he could fill it with sound now, to cover the creaking of the old floors.

A creak itself signalled the presence of someone behind him. He took a sip of his water. "Sorry, I just needed to get away for a minute," he said as he turned.
He never thought he'd be back here, in his grandparents' home, surrounded by is family. His parents. But when Ava called him about the funeral, a funeral for not one, not two, but three family members, he was compelled to attend. Still, he stuck to the outer corners of the reception with Stella.

He felt as though he was an intruder in this house, even though he lived in it at one point. Even though he spent nights in the front room with his siblings and cousins, building pillow forts and drinking hot cocoa. Or when they got older, stealing from the liquor cabinets and climbing to the rooftop garden.

They'd all been so close at one point, a gigantic family of aunts and uncles, cousins and siblings, that seemed closer than close. He wondered if that changed in the past years he'd been gone or if it stayed the same to the very end. His hand trembled, but he swallowed and turned back to the refreshment table. "Do you want anything, Stell?" he asked as he poured himself another glance of water. He glanced over at his pregnant wife with a faint smile.

Stella and their baby. That was his future. Did he really need to linger on the past?
Ava was exhausted. She'd hidden the bags underneath her eyes with makeup, of course, but it was obvious in the slump of her shoulders, how she sat down when most of the Carre family stood. She, along with Uncle Isaiah, had spent the past weeks working themselves to the bone to make sure that the triple funeral went off without a hitch. Working with the press, being the florist for the occasion, calling everyone. consoling everyone. Now that it was all over, her sleepless nights and tireless work seemed to be catching up to her.

"Mama, mama!"

Ava looked up as the youngest of her three children, Finley, bounded up to her. He was only four, not quite old enough to understand what was going on around him. She reached out as he skidded to a stop in front of her. She smoothed back his mop of blonde hair. "We have to use our inside voices. Remember, Finley?" she said gently with a soft smile.

"But Mama, look," he said, much quieter this time, as he held out his hand. She looked down at the small collection of wrapped chocolates in his hand.

She blinked. She didn't order chocolates. "Where did you get those?"

"Auntie Terra brought them," he said. "Can I have one, Mama?"

Terra? But Terra hadn't been at the funeral. Ava rose to her feet, casting a glance over to Robert, entertaining their other two, Lilah {9} and Zara {6}. "You can have one," she said. "But you have to give the other two to your sisters, okay?"

"Kay!" he said before hurrying over to them.

Ava turned towards the entrance, where a cluster of children had gathered around their favorite Auntie. The one that owned a candy store.
