Beyond Third Rock

Wyatt pulled the blanket over them and kissed her forehead. He stared at the bracelet on their wrist. He would find a way. He vowed to her then in his mind that he would find a way to release them. Maybe being dropped planet side was a good thing. Maybe they could finally escape this mess, live on that planet and create a life together. He smiled softly, a man could dream right. He flung his wrist and the timer shone in front of him. Four hours till drop time. He kissed her forehead once more and closed his own eyes.

Jane was curled up and sleeping happily when a buzzer went off. She startled awake, alarmed at the ache between her legs and someone's arms wrapped around her. She struggled, a confused and scared whimper leaving her lips before she broke free. She rolled from the bed to her feet, trying to locate the source of the alarm. She saw the packed bag by the door, her memory returning. "Shit..." Jane remembered that they were supposed to report to be dropped.

She shuddered, moving to grab her clothes from the floor.

Wyatt groaned feeling her warmth disappear from his arms. He opened his eyes reluctantly and sat up on his elbows watching her scramble about. After rubbing at his sleepy eyes he stood and pulled on the clothes he had discarded all over the ground. He slipped on a hooded sweatshirt and slung his pack onto his back. He walked over to her, running his thumb along her cheek.

"Ready?" He said softly, his eyes smiling at her.

Jane finished dressing, shoving the box of condoms into her bag at the last minute. She calmed at Wyatt's touch, leaning into his hand. "Ready as I'll ever be...." She grabbed his hand, holding it to her cheek. "We can do this..." She kissed his palm and then dropped his hand. She straightened her clothes and sighed.

They arrived at the reporting station, the pod destined to take them to Globus resting there. Jane held her chin up in pride, catching sight of her father watching from behind his glass window.

They were checked on one last time before they stepped into the pod, locking into their seats the countdown began. Wyatt leaned over, reaching for her hand he held it tight as they were rocketed out into space towards the planet. His eyes closed tightly as the atmosphere hit the pod and it began to shake violently.

Jane held his hand tightly. Her eyes dulled, her face falling into a passive expression. She blanked out, her fingers moving up to fiddle with her locket. The vibration rocked the pod and she looked at Wyatt with a smirk. "Hanging in there?" She squeezed his hand lovingly, feeling the chute deploy to break their fall.

Wyatt would never understand why this woman so fearless. Hurling through space and time in a capsule engulfed in flames and she looked as calm as ever. When they had cleared the atmosphere enough the chute deployed and Wyatt groaned at the sudden jolt it gave. Within a few more minutes the pod crashed onto the ground. Thankfully the chute had done its job.

Wyatt lay hanging from his seat, groaning he reached for the harness and unbuckled, falling down imediately. "Fuck." he groaned flinging his wrist. "Jane, are you all right?" he asked. Using what he could on the pod he scanned the enviroment around the pod. The oxygenation concentration in the atmosphere was identical to that of Earth. He looked back at Jane and moved towards the door.

"Now or never." he said softly before opening the door that moved with a hiss. Wyatt didn't know if it was because he was worried but he held his breath as the door opened just in case the machine had been wrong and the air was poisonsous. He stepped out of the pod, his loaded ruger in hand he narrowed his eyes at the brightness of the closest sun. The temperature wasn't too warm nor close to cold. Just mild and no new life forms had been seen yet. Wyatt whistled as he looked around, it was magnificent

Jane chuckled at Wyatt's groan. It was plain to see that he was uncomfortable. She braced herself, the crash sending the pod rolling forward until she was hanging in her seat. She took a few moments to check herself for stability before unbuckling. She grabbed her sack from where it was strapped to the side. "I'm fine....stop being such a worry wort."

She moved to join him, holding dagger in hand. "What do you see, babe?" She stepped out of the pod, hissing as the bright light flooded her eyes. She took a deep breath, the abundance of oxygen causing her head to spin. The deforestation and chemical pollution on Earth had caused the atmosphere's oxygen to rapidly deplete over time. Her lungs burned from the sudden abundance of it after years of constantly recycled space oxygen and smog. "Holy....crap...." She hissed, eyes wide as her mind seemed to come to life.

Jane's hand reached out to grab Wyatt's shirt as she gazed around. It only took her a few moments to steady herself and she brought up her band's information. "Good...they dropped us in what appears to be this region." She pointed to a flat grassland on the map and chewed her lip. "First priority is water, right? Well...best guess would be to head towards the woodlands and out of clear sight."

Wyatt listened to her and nodded. His eyes scanned their surroundings. He holstered his gun and followed behind her. They hiked for what seemed like hours. Although they hadn't come across any animals or beings that were hostile or different, Wyatt was concerned. Why was everthing going so well?

Jane had walked with Wyatt for what seemed like hours until she finally called asked Wyatt if they could rest. She sat down on the ground, looking up at him lovingly. "You're in great shape...." She chuckled, readjusting her hair and clothes. Her body felt at ease and she suddenly wondered why. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end and she hissed. "Wyatt....why is this so easy?"

Her brow furrowed in concern and she looked up at him with mild fear in her eyes. "We need to find shelter...I don't like this...." She looked up, one of the two suns already heading towards the horizon. Her intuition was warning her against being out at night and she needed to listen to it.

Wyatt was standing on a boulder nearby, looking off in all directions. He shook his head. "Something's not right. You're right.. you rest. I'm going to start building. I have a feeling the higher up we are the safer we are." He set his pack down beside where she was. He sheathed his knife in his waistline and leaned to give her a peck on the lips. With that he turned and began gathering sticks and branches. Once he had all he needed he scaled the right sized tree and began building a tree top shelter floor they would sleep on. When the floor was build and secured he whistled down to her in the form of a bird call.

"Care to join me up here baby girl? Maybe you could use one of your gadgets to find water from up here?" He said watching her.

Jane had moved to a crouching position, dagger resting in her hands almost too naturally. She waited like that, her unease growing with every passing moment Wyatt was away from her. She looked up at his call, a small shudder passing through her body as she nodded. "I can take care of that...." She flung both her bag over her shoulder and his. Walking to the bottom of the tree she looked up at him. "This doesn't feel right at all...." She whispered, the second sun moving towards the horizon.

Wyatt frowned also feeling the unease that was settling in his stomach. He watched her scale halfway up the tree. He leaned down and reached for her, helping to pull her up onto the platform. Soon it would be dark. He reached into his pack, removing the small diskus that would portray the canopy of the tree as if it were empty, nothing that would be out hunting woul be able to find them.

Jane was glad when he pulled her up, both packs were heavy on her back to carry. She set them down, watching him remove the disk. As he did, she grabbed a small tube and mallet and headed for the trunk of the tree. "Wyatt, can you bring me a water bottle?" She tapped the hollow tube into the tree, grabbing the bottle quickly. She placed it under just in time as water filled the tube. "There, that solves our water problem for now...we would get more out of jungle trees..." She paused, crouching with dagger in hand as she heard noises filtering from the forest floor.

Nervously, she approached Wyatt, putting a hand on his arm. Jane tried to school her features, but struggled to keep the shaking from her fingers. A crack of thunder above them had her jumping towards the tree trunk. Uncontrollable shaking broke out along her body as the sky lit up with lightening. Thunderstorms on earth had grown sparse but when they rolled in, they were fierce.

Water started pouring down in large drops, soaking the tree tops. Another crash of thunder rolled and Jane crouched to cover her ears. She closed her eyes in a fear she never showed. The sounds and growls on the forest floor only strengthened.

A memory of a storm ripping things away when she was but a mere child flashed through Janes mind. A face of someone she hardly recognized popped into her mind and she grasped the locket around around her neck with knuckles stained white with fear.

Wyatt was running to use the solar tarp he had packed as a canopy for their tent to keep them dry. He wondered as he tied the tarp around the trunk of the tree why Jane had not tied the corner down. When he looked up, his body now soaked to the core he found her crouched, holding her ears and shaking. After tying down the two corners he moved over to where she was. Sinking to his haunches he picked her up into his arms and brought her under the canopy. Lowering them down he held her in his lap. He rubbed at her back, wrapping a warming blanket around them.

"Shh. I'm here babygirl." he murmured softly against her ear.

Jane jerked away from him, trembling breaking out along her body. She stayed in his lap, shutting her eyes tightly as if to keep out the storm.

The noises from the forest floor increased until screeches could be made out clearly. Jane rocked back and forth, face growing pale as her fear with the lashing storm grew. "I'm ised to getting through this myself..." She whispered in response to his comforting words.

Wyatt nodded, continuing to rub at her back. He wrapped her tighter in the blanket as the screeching became clear and his heart accelerated. His eyes glued to his pack where his gun lay packed now. He listened to her and watched her, his heart aching with her words.

"You're not alone. Don't forget that Jane." he said softly tipping her chin until her eyes met his. She was nervous, he hated seeing her that way.

Jane looked at him, fear filled eyes quivering with unshed tears. She buried her head in his chest, a small whimper escaping her lips. "It's the storm, Wyatt...." Her fingers clenched his shirt as they folded into fists. She knew that no matter what was on the ground, it could not reach them. The fact that they were still rustling around in the undergrowth told her that much.

"What about the storm?" Wyatt asked wanting to understand. When the trunk vibrated from whatever was trying to sniff them out, Wyatt curled her into his chest. Whatever they had read on this planet was not in the least bit full disclosure. There was something out there in the dark that would threaten the sustainable life of a colony on this planet after dark.

Jane put a hand over her mouth to keep from screaming as another flash of lightening lit the sky. She looked at Wyatt, tears now running from her eyes. "I don't do storms...they scare me." She flinched at a roll of thunder, eyes rolling up in her head as she fought to keep from bolting. It felt as if they were closer to the storm in the tree than on the ground. "I was five years old....the storm on earth came out of no where." Her fingers tightened in his shirt as the tree shook once again.

"It ripped up everything. Mom..." She stiffened, the next roll of thunder rendering her speechless. A small whimper escaped her lips and her breathing grew ragged as the fear coursed through her veins.
