The world lies covered in technology. Magnetic trains connect the whole world, and streets are laid bare for civilians while hover vehicles make their way through the skyscrapers of the city. However, society is divided into two sects. Those who can use magic, and those who cannot. The majority of the population cannot, and goes about their lives normally. Those who can, however, face discrimination from the majority of the populace. Whenever someone is discovered to have magical ability, they are forced to attend a "magical boarding school" of sorts. There they are taught how to control and utilize their powers, but they are also trapped in what is essentially a fancy prison. The mages are housed there, taught there, and essentially live through the majority of their childhood and adolescent years there, depending on how soon their talent manifested. Once they graduate at the age of 20 (yes, it takes longer to graduate from one of these schools than normal) they are allowed back into society at large. In addition to this, the government keeps files on all known mages, and has surveillance set up to pick out the facial profile and DNA of any known mages on file. For those with a known history of being difficult, or those who have virulent psychological profiles, agents are actually dispatched to watch them. Using magic outside of the academy for any reason is illegal, unless a state of dire emergency is declared. This is true even if the mage in question used their powers to save another human, though more often than not these mages receive a reduced sentence. In essence, being a mage carries a stigma of being either dangerous, an outsider, and not-human. This is reinforced by the fact that nearly all people who can use magic have some physical manifestation on their bodies showing such. This ranges from unnatural hair colors, to glowing tattoos, to something as simple as cat ears. Friends and even family will shun someone for developing powers like this, provided they are 'normal'.

--------------------------------------------------
Name: Vralik Estenheim
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Sign: Vibrant blue hair and eyes. His hair is always about shoulder length. Even if he cuts it or dyes it, it is back to normal the following morning.
Core Magic: Wind manipulation. Vralik can command the wind to strengthen, change direction, or slacken at his command. Continued practice has allowed him to move anything roughly his size or smaller through the air readily controlled. Anything larger can be moved, but generally with less control. He can also compress air into tight spheres, which can be used as pushing forces, or released in a fashion similar to bottle rockets.
Studied magic:
Sigil magic: Vralik can lay down magical symbols on surfaces, or even upon the air. These symbols have various effects, but generally hedge a particular type of material from passing. Examples include solid objects, human flesh, fire, poisonous gases, and light.
Temperature control: While vralik cannot directly control ice or fire, he has practiced the ability to control the ambient temperature in the air or of an object. The larger an area, the more time and energy it takes to change.
Personality: Vralik is playful and joking, preferring activity to study and practice to theory. As a result he is not thought of by many as a good student, despite actually being a decent mage. However, he has had trouble with the law in the past because of his desire to continually go on small "adventures" outside the academy. He says he just wants to go out for a walk, but the government disagrees. He also hates to see someone upset or in pain, and will help them for no other reason than he wants to. Vralik has been at the academy since he was eight years old, and his escapades are more out of curiosity than a true desire to escape.
Bio: Vralik barely remembers his life before the academy, and as a result knows the entire grounds very well. This is especially true as he has a tendency to fly around the area. This has become so prominent that guards are told to watch for just how high the young man goes in the air. He has been shot on more than one occasion for flying too high. Throughout his years at the academy, he has studied both his own core magic as well as several other studies, not in the least of which help him get out of the academy. Never has he desired to actually leave, only satisfy his own curiosity. As he has gotten older, he has served jail time and suffered other greater punishments. As such, he escapades have increased in length. As the next year starts, it will have been 5 months since his last breakout. He is eager for another. Many a student thinks he will end up being executed once he leaves. Vralik has no true plans for the future currently, beyond traveling the world. Such a feat will be extremely difficult given his status as a mage, but he doesn't let that change his mind.

Name: Ishtar Lunore
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Appearance:
53329694b64338a84065932242d3b229.jpg

Sign: Silver Glowing Tattoo-Like Marks. These marks run up the side of her body and arms/legs. They can be covered up with heavy makeup but the glow still tends to remain.
Core Magic: Water Manipulation. Ishtar specifically likes to use the solid form of water, ice.
Studied magic:
Divination: Due to runaway status, her parents taught her how to use the art of divination in order to evade capture. She can only divine a day in advance at most at this moment.
Personality: Ishtar is a rough tomboy who has a load of trust issues. She's highly cautious and tends to not stick her neck out for others without extremely good reason. Her appearance and feminine wile is often utilized to get what she wants. Avalus Academy has always been viewed in disdain as a prison and she will waste no time trying to create an escape plan.
Bio: Ishtar Lunore has been a runaway with her parents since birth. She, her parents, and her younger sister Sekhmet have lived as nomadic wanderers for several years now. Her parents, Michael and Sistral, were mages who went into hiding very soon after they left the Academy, due to the fact that Sistral was trying to hide her pregnancy out of fear that her child would be a mage like her. Sekhmet was born a year after. Ishtar named herself her sister's guardian early in her life and practiced her mage abiities whenever she could to learn how to protect Sekhmet. Her father Michael was a blind diviner whose divination was so powerful that he not only could see weeks in advance but could use divination to "see" in a way. Her mother was a manipulator of weather and was powerful enough to create storms that reached catastrophic levels. When Ishtar was sixteen, when the government used another mage diviner to help find them, Sistral was cornered and attempted to fight her way out. The fight ended with a laser-pistol shooting a hole through Sistral's heart. The same diviner interrupted Michael's ability and two years later Ishtar and Michael were caught. Sekhmet disappeared thankfully and the thought that her sister is still free gives Ishtar peace. Her father was taken away to who knows where and Ishtar doubts whether or not he is still alive. Ishtar is now being forced to make the transition from runaway to student as she comes to the Academy for the first time.
---------------------------------------------------
Name: Samuel Grey
Age: 17 (Birth date unknown to himself)
Gender: Male
APPEARANCE (OPEN)

Sign: White hair. A black pentagram on his right palm. When his power flares, his hair turns black and jagged black lines run along his right arm, starting from the shoulder blade and leading to the pentagram.
Core Magic: Life Force Feedback. Samuel emits bursts of concussive force from the palm of his right hand, ranging in power from "massage chair" to "high-end artillery". These pulses can travel through the air for a fair distance based on its initial force. He can "fire" single high-powered concussive blasts ore rapid pulses. The blast's diameter can be widened or narrowed to increase its area of effect or concentrate its power. His pulse size ranges from three inches in diameter down to one-quarter inch diameter. Small, concentrated shots give his pulses increased penetrative power. Lastly, his blasts technically don't have projectiles, yet they act very similarly to ballistic munitions.
As the name of his magic suggests, Samuel can't use this power and get off scot-free. It draws on his own life energy, and stronger pulses threaten to tear his body apart. It can be compared to firing a ballistic rifle: the more destructive force behind the projectile, the harsher the recoil. It also doesn't help that his magic flares in reaction to his emotions. Fear, anger, and "excitement" (hint hint) all cause him to lose control and misfire.
Studied magic:
- Regeneration. Samuel has worked exceptionally hard to fight the feedback he receives from his power going wild, and his body can regenerate from most light to moderate trauma if he is allowed a brief reprieve. This was the first magic he learned; without this he would probably be paralyzed by now.
- Restorative Aura. Not happy with having such a destructive dominant hand, he learned how to channel regenerative magics through his left arm and out the palm of that hand. This restorative force not only repairs physical trauma, but also rejuvenates the recipient's stamina.
Personality: Samuel is introverted, timid, and generally nervous. He lacks in self-confidence and especially flounders when interacting with women. Despite his social handicaps, he is kind-hearted and gentle to other mages. He manages to find inner strength when putting others before himself. However, beneath his outward goodness, he has a cold, jaded, cruel heart from his time one the streets. His disenchantment with the world causes him come off as heartless at rare times. He tries to keep this darkness suppressed. He knows the difference between right and wrong, and truly wishes to be a good person, like the heroes he read stories about as a young child. Still, if angered or pushed into a corner, he can be driven to harm a fellow human - or worse.
Perhaps as a result of his lacking self-esteem, Samuel is impressionable and develops according to his interactions with his peers. He seems fearful of "normal" people, be they regular civilians or armed guards. Were he honest with himself, he would acknowledge that he looks down on non-mages, thinking magic users to be the next step for humanity's development. While he doesn't agree with the Academy's "prison school" concept, he hopes that his time studying here will help him learn to control his core magic. He has a natural affinity for nature, plants and animals alike. He loves classical music and, unknown to him, has an insatiable sweet tooth.
Bio: Samuel Grey was born to an unknown set of parents, on an unknown day in an unknown year. He has no recollection of a father or mother. His earliest memory is of an orphanage where he was looked after until about 8 years ago. His Core Magic revealed itself by causing him to blast a fellow orphan's leg off. He lived on the street for over five years, evading anti-magic containment units as he clung perilously to survival.
Around two years ago, during a heavy rainstorm, he was finally cornered by AMCU following reports of an incident where a pedestrian bridge was destroyed. In addition, two young non-mages were found dead nearby. A female, roughly 16 years old, was recovered from the river that ran under the aforementioned bridge; autopsy determined that she drowned in the high waters. The other victim, a male in his early 20s, had two gaping holes in his chest and abdomen, roughly 3 inches in diameter. Samuel was tried but not convicted for lack of evidence and witnesses for testimony. He was shipped to Avalus Academy immediately after his trial.
He has just started his third year of schooling in the Academy, where he proves to be an excellent student, almost too perfect in his grades and behavior. Because of his Core Magic's extreme danger - compounded by his lack of control - he has been under heavy surveillance since his admission. Despite the great challenges he faces, he desires to become a medical doctor, improving and saving lives with the same magic the rest of the world shuns and fears.

Name: Nictious "Nyx" Bellford
Age: 19
Gender: Male

Appearance: Average of height, but often slouches slightly with his head bowed, making him appear shorter than he is. Dark brown hair, worn short and styled in an odd fashion, as if someone couldn't see the hair they were styling. Clothing wise, plain colors define his wardrobe. Non-descript shirts and jeans are his normal attire, and when the weather calls for it, and dark gray long coat. And of course, he is never seen without his rather nice sunglasses.

Sign: Doesn't have eyes

Core Magic: Despite having no eyes, he possesses impressive vision, far surpassing the 20/20 norm in clarity and range, just not in light of the visible spectrum. He can see energy fields and emanations of magnets and magical fields.

Studied Magics: Due to his lack of otherwise obvious magic signs, his lack of eyes fairly easily hidden behind a pair of sunglasses and a blind man's cane, he deliberately avoided any sort of magic studies that could bring the government down upon him.

Personality: Quiet, but rather cheerful, he's been rather upbeat about life, despite being blind in the typical sense. Able to enjoy listening to his friend's adventures and exploits despite knowing that he's never likely to experience such things himself, he goes through life with a smile. Not terribly studious, he's never had issues with grades or work, and rather enjoys music. Additionally, is rather accepting of his position at the school, occasionally mentioning that, with how the laws are structured, he was rather lucky. Having never known a moment without the glowing lights highlighting the world around him, and consequently is always using his magic, once they discovered him they could've tossed him into prison for life. Or, he occasionally muses to himself, in rare moments of pessimism executed him as an 'unnecessary risk' to the general public

Bio: Born to the Bedfords, an average middle-class family, he was a normal child. Or raised as one, at least. By the time he realized that these magical lights and fields and shapes he had in his head were real, and acted as a form of sight for him, he was both well versed in how to live as a blind man, and the stigma against magicians. Having made it all the way through the public school system, he was accompanying a rock band on tour for a year while he figured out what he would do with his life. Ostensibly, he was in charge of maintaining instruments and keeping everything in tune, which he did rather spectacularly, but he also tended to sit in a booth near the main entrance to venues as an added security. With the ubiquity of mag-lev trains as transportation, just about everything metal on a person would hold a small magnetic field for a time, and the fields of magnetized weapons and ammunition were rather distinct. Which leads into how he was discovered. The band was performing at a rather large venue, and nearly an hour after they took the stage, a man walked up to the entrance. Nothing overtly odd about that, sometimes people were late, and some just didn't want to deal with the opening acts. That is, until the man opened fire on the usher who asked for his ticket. At a the trial later, Nyx was interrogated over the fact that he had managed to pin the gunman to the wall with a spare truss rod.

Non-character knowledge - Due to his rather unique ability to see energy fields, magical and otherwise, he has developed a minor capacity to manipulate said fields. Not enough to negate them, or make them behave terribly different from their natural state, but enough to... channel it into another field. So, standing next to an outlet at a major concert venue, he was able to channel a fragment of the massive energies powering the stadium into the minute magnetic field surrounding the truss rod. The logical reaction of one magnetic field, to another magnetic field, is to move away. The stronger the fields, the faster they try to move away. Ergo, magical railgun. Because it was rather sloppily done, and Nyx has very little experience with actually using this facet of his power, the resulting forces were reasonable for strong and skilled individual to produce, and he's so far managed to hide this aspect to his powers.
