  1. Upheaval, turmoil, violence. Words that had never been applied to the history of a serene place called Lachne were now the only descriptions people gave to the faltering kingdom. Merely a decade of rule by the recently crowned Oswald Monieux had almost completely deteriorated the relations among Lachne's ruling class. The entire country suffered as a result of the dispute between the new king and his father's nobles. Regional government ground to a halt, and simple functions became difficult for the crippled crown. It took only a decade for aristocrats and activists alike to begin protesting the continued reign of the Monieux family. Rallies both for and against the king had become commonplace in the capital, but after a string of particularly violent clashes in the streets action was taken by King Oswald to reassert his control.

Two hundred influential dissenters were tried and executed in a weekend. Authors, business owners, government workers and even officers of the military found negligent. Few demographics were spared the slaughter. For as few lives were taken the targets had been selected carefully, all were to know that none were safe. For every subject brought to heel by the display, another swore to reform or revolution. The king's attempt to prove his resolve resulted only in the further fragmentation of the country. Both sides began to arm themselves in the countryside, and the future of the nation was left to those brave or callous enough to make the first move.
