Welcome to my little guide on what to avoid when writing ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* woooaaaah ASIAN CHARACTERS. *:・゚✧*:・゚✧ Obviously, this guide isn't the Word of God on all portrayals of Asian people, but it's a way to check yourself when it comes to writing people outside of your own ethnicity. I'm Asian myself, and I can't say that I could write a character from every Asian culture in the world perfectly! The point I'll be trying to make throughout this entire guide is that writing Asian characters isn't hard. We're not an alien species and lots of us probably aren't that different from you in our day-to-day lives. The big thing to remember here is to be respectful!

But Pav! I love k-pop and anime! Is that so wrong of me to include it in my writing?
No, it's not! The only problem is when people use all the stereotypes they've seen in k-pop, anime and other media and apply them to all Asian people. Roleplaying is a hobby and if you want to make every character you ever play Japanese with purple hair and natural golden eyes, go for it. If all you want to faceclaim is k-pop idols, go for it. Just don't act as if those are realistic depictions of Asian people as a whole and don't be offended when actual Asian people tell you that you're being disrespectful.



»»—⍟ THE DIVERSITY OF ASIAN PEOPLE ⍟—««
(A.K.A: NOT EVERYONE IS JAPANESE/KOREAN/CHINESE)

Let me preface this by saying that there is nothing wrong with playing Japanese, Korean or Chinese characters. Obviously, these cultures exist and have huge impacts on people's perceptions of Asian people worldwide. However, these three populations only make up roughly 36% of all people in Asia! (It would be harder to count how many Asian people there are worldwide, counting immigrants and subtracting non-Asian people simply living in Asia, so we're simplifying it this way.) Even though that is a sizeable chunk, that is still not even half of all Asian people. A lot of people forget about many Asian countries, not even recognizing that some are technically in Asia! Examples include: India, Pakistan, Taiwan, the Philippines and many, many more.

It is not a requirement to write out characters from these backgrounds, but you should not lock yourself into the belief that all Asian people are fair-skinned, skinny and eat with chopsticks. These are stereotypes that definitely exist in real people, but they do not represent all Asian people in the slightest. There are dark-skinned Asians. There are overweight Asians. There are Asians that eat with their hands, Asians that eat bugs, Asians that can't do math and Asians that do all sorts of things that might be odd or even disgusting to you. Like I said earlier, respect is the most important part.

If you feel as though you are not playing other Asian ethnicities because you dislike their cultures, ask yourself why you might think that way. What makes eating snails or frogs in France so much more cultured than eating fried silkworm pupae in Thailand, or pork blood curry (dinuguan) from the Philippines? Why is eating with your hands considered to be barbaric by some when it's what many of our ancestors did, for hundreds of years? Why is it
cool and eco-friendly when a white person "invents" banana leaf plates, but uncivilized otherwise despite it being done by indigenous Asian people for hundreds of years? Sometimes, we have biases without even realizing it. Stepping back and trying to find the root of your discomfort can sometimes help.

If you have never played a different Asian ethnicity because you simply do not know how to, I would encourage you to research one new culture and try it out! I try to, and I feel like it helps me grow as a writer. Though you might make mistakes, this is part of the learning process. Writing what you know is good, but learning to expand your knowledge and see the world through a different lens while writing can really deepen your understanding of other perspectives. Like with anything else you don't know when writing, research is important! Check what religions are predominant in those regions, what languages are often spoken, what cultural customs they might follow. These nuances help build your character in a way that is not only more realistic, but less focused on stereotypically "Western" ideals.

Ex. I'm Filipina and co-sleeping (sleeping with your kids/babies in your bed until they're of school age) is pretty normal to me. In many Asian cultures, putting your baby in a separate room would be seen as far more dangerous/abnormal. To many of my non-Asian friends, this is insane.



»»—⍟ COMMON STEREOTYPES & AVOIDING CARICATURES ⍟—««
MAKING A LIST AND CHECKING IT TWICE

Stereotypes are not inherently bad. Humans make assumptions and categorize other people, items, thoughts and just about everything else in order to better understand the world around them. We make associations and that is normal. An Asian character can be written with a few stereotypes! It's hard to avoid them, and they exist for a reason, no matter how unimportant the reason may seem, due to historical events, observations made throughout history or petty rumours and the like. However, following too many stereotypes when writing these characters can lead you into the zone of caricatures.

So... What is a caricature?

A picture, description, or imitation of a person in which certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to create a comic or grotesque effect. - Lexico (Oxford University Press)

Essentially, when you create a caricature, you exaggerate traits in order to generate a certain reaction from people. Oftentimes, these caricatures are so simplified that they lead to misconceptions about the very things or people they were based on, which does far more harm than good.

Here are some general things to keep in mind:

✧ Naming conventions: Please do research on typical naming conventions with certain cultures. What names are common? How are they structured? This is not to say that Asian people never have names that are out of the ordinary for their culture, but obviously, you should not be naming a Vietnamese person "Lingling" or "Ching chong". Not only is doing so racist, but it instantly makes your character into a caricature. Lingling IS a name, but it has also been used in Western society as a way to mock all people of Asian descent, so tread lightly if you do use it. Do your research.

Think about your character's parents. Are they traditional? Is their culture important to them? What languages do they speak? Many times, I've seen people naming their Asian characters things like "Sapphire Lee Miyazaki" when their parents do not even speak English. As an Asian person, I've met Asian people with all sorts of names, ranging from Finest, to Jessica, to Mercy, to Cleopatra. These names are possible, but they must be thought of BEFOREHAND.

✧ Nicknames: Do NOT give your character a more "Western" sounding nickname because "their name is too difficult to pronounce." This is racist and it's also the reason why many Asian people become ashamed of their names and their culture, just to make other people comfortable. Why can people in Western societies learn names like Tchaikovsky or Geoffrey but not Chuachai?

✧ Don't stack stereotypes: The more you base your character off stereotypes, the more of a caricature they will become. One or two are fine, but basing their entire personality off of propaganda that came from the Yellow Peril or intensely biased Hollywood depictions of Asian people is extremely problematic. Being very bad at English, being extremely good at math/nerdy, working for Chinese takeout restaurants, being rigid about gender roles or knowing kungfu are all possible traits for characters, but should not all be written together. People, regardless of their ethnicity, are multifaceted and writing Asian people with all these stereotypes is incredibly insulting.

NO, WE ARE NOT YELLOW
Let me preface this section by saying that any description you write about Asian people is 100% a problem if you use racist terms, like "chinky" or "oriental" to describe Asian eyes. Describing them as exotic (as if Asian people don't make up a huge chunk of the world's population...) or comparing their skin tone to food is also tone-deaf. (Ex. Do you think black characters should all be described as 'mocha' or 'chocolate'?)

Moving on, describing characters is something many of us do in writing. Of course we do, descriptions breathe life into our stories! However, describing characters of colour is a problem many of us run into. If you're like me, you grew up assuming that white people were the "standard" character. Because of the lack of POC I saw in media, I simply assumed that main characters were always going to be white. I didn't get a lot of practice describing POC due to this in the earlier years of my journey into roleplaying.

Here are some general rules of thumb to follow:


It is okay to simply describe someone as Asian, especially if the character you are writing doesn't know exactly where in Asia this person is from, but know that Asian itself isn't much of a descriptor. Asian people vary greatly in looks, just like any other race or ethnicity. Most people default to thinking of East-Asians, but of course, this does not represent the diversity of Asian appearances. Do NOT call them exotic!

Do not use the words "slanted" or "slitted" to describe their eyes. The particular look of "Asian eyes" being thin has always been stereotype that has unfortunately followed us into the present. (Did anyone else grow up with that game where people would pull their eyelids back going 'Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.'? That was racist as hell.)Here is a really good guide on describing Asian eyes that I definitely recommend checking out! They give alternatives to use and show multiple pictures as exemples to help.

✧ Asian people's skin tones range from very pale to very dark, with both warm or cool undertones. (Wow! Just like everyone else!) They are not yellow.

✧ Introduce the fact that they are Asian naturally, not as a way to tokenize them. (Woah, another guide? Sorry for all the guides within guides, but the internet is full of great resources: we need to make use of them!)



»»—⍟ FETISHISM IN WRITING ⍟—««
IF YOU COMPARE US TO HENTAI, I'M GOING TO DESTROY YOU

We've all seen it. The beautiful, exotic Asian geisha. The motherly, nurturing Asian housewife. The innocent but provocative Asian schoolgirl. All demure, submissive, polite but also sexy. There is nothing wrong with writing smut with Asian people. It's not a shocker that we have sex. The problem is when you fetishize them. I could talk forever about the fetishization of Asian people in the media, from the proliferation of the pedophilic Asian schoolgirl fetish, to the obsession with mixed race White-Asian babies, to the labelling of Asian people with the Model Minority Myth... But I will not. Right now, we are specifically talking about what I have seen in writing and roleplaying.

So what is fetishization, really?
According to the
Cambridge English Dictionary, fetishization can be defined as:
a sexual interest in an object, a part of the body that is not a sexual organ, or a person as if they are an object

It's one thing to have a type but treating a person as if they are nothing but a sexual object because of their race's appeal to you is something completely different. Not only is this dehumanizing, but it does nothing but reinforce the idea that Asian people are not, in fact, people, but objects of lust. Though fiction is not reality, harmful and consistent portrayals of sexualized Asian people who are always shown to be non-autonomous and toys rather than people, can be extremely damaging and/or offensive to Asian people.

Read the following passage:

His mom looked exactly like a doll. In The Wizard of Oz—the book, not the movie, Dorothy goes to this place called
the Dainty China Country, and all the people are tiny and perfect. When Eleanor was little and her mom read her
the story, Eleanor had thought the Dainty China people were Chinese. But they were actually ceramic, or they'd turn ceramic if you tried to sneak one back to Kansas.

Eleanor imagined Park's dad, Tom Selleck, tucking his Dainty China person into his Nak jacket and sneaking her out.

This is an excerpt from Eleanor and Park, a novel by Rainbow Rowell. The first thing to note here is that Eleanor, the main character, is thinking about Park's mother, who is Korean. Not Chinese. These cultures are not interchangeable and you certainly should NOT be going around referring to Korean people, much less Chinese people, as people from Dainty China Country. Of course, she is referencing a book, but this doesn't help much, considering the fact that she highlights the doll-like, tiny and perfect exoticism of the woman, which is completely rooted in fetishism. His mother is not a person. She is a China Doll. It is comments like these that perpetuate the idea that Asian women can be completely boiled down to the Dragon Lady or Yamato Nadeshiko tropes.

This is not to say that Asian men do not face fetishization in writing as well. The popularity of k-pop has lead to a complete lack of empathy from many of those who are obsessed with it, leading to that leaking into their comments and writing. Every Asian man is not tall and skinny, wearing eyeliner and catering to your fantasies while dancing, singing and making cute faces for the camera. A full grown man you have never met is not your adorable baby to infantilize. I see this problem a lot, especially when people take it to the next level with basically turning Asian men into the next thing to hit with the 'Yaoi Fangirl' mentality. This is advice not only for writing, but for talking about actual people as well. Empathy is essential.

The most important point I want to make here though, is that if an Asian person tells you that your writing is offensive, check yourself. Don't argue that you know their culture better than them. Speaking over Asian voices only leads to more Asian media being drowned out, leaving only what is deemed "acceptable" by common culture to leak through. Asia is a diverse, beautiful continent, and it is not your toy to write out as some sexy geisha land where everyone worships white men. We have ALL seen enough "hot, exotic, submissive POC falling for white man saviour." Enough is enough.
 
This is a great guide! Very well-written.

I have to say, I find it hilarious when someone gives their character a Japanese-sounding name that makes absolutely no sense in actual Japanese. 😂 I know they don't actually intend to be racist, but those terrible names make me want to poke my eyes out, I won't lie.

To anyone else that's reading this: I'd also like to add that if you're someone that wants to write an Asian character but doesn't want to risk "offending" us Asians--don't worry too much; you're overthinking it. We're PEOPLE first before our race or nationality. A Chinese man raised in America would not necessarily know how to use chopsticks, or even know that much Chinese. Every person is different, so really, just treat the character as you would any other.

Not so much responding as adding, the only pushback I'd give on this entire guide is that a number of Asian people WHO MOVE TO A WESTERN COUNTRY will pick a Western nickname for themselves b/c they're sick of the Western people around them mispronouncing their real names, or will simply accept the Western nickname as the result of their peers, such as someone named Jae-something just going by Jay bc that's the only thing their friends would bother saying. So the existence of the more Western nickname itself has historical precedence, it just isn't something to include without at least briefly thinking about "when did they get this nickname? why? where? did they pick it themselves or did their western friends convert their name without thinking about it because they couldn't pronounce it?" It doesn't always have to be a super deep reason, either. A girl I knew in school said she picked her Western nickname which didn't sound anything like her real name just because she liked the way it sounded. But it is something to think about.

Absolutely! It’s just all important to think about beforehand. The reason I wrote this guide was to try and get people to think more about these things when writing different ethnicities. I have a more Western name, my parents chose it for me so that people wouldn’t have to struggle with pronouncing my name growing up in Western country. In the end, it’s all about treating your Asian characters like people rather than fun decorations.
 
as someone of asian descent myself, this guide is really important and well-made and i thank you for posting something like this! this captures a lot of nuances and details that have to be considered to write an asian character respectfully!
 
Thanks for compiling this! As a white person who writes a lot of realism, I default to white main characters for the same reason I default to settings and topics with which I'm personally familiar (with the exception of fantasy, where there's way more freedom to make things up). When I write outside my experience I'm afraid of getting it wrong even after time-consuming research, especially where mistakes can have irl repercussions. I guess RP is a low-stakes way to explore new characters.

I guess RP is a low-stakes way to explore new characters.

It's definitely okay to get things wrong sometimes. You can't know everything! Plus, writing things outside of your comfort zone can be daunting. I feel that way too when writing different ethnicities from my own, but I feel like it helps you grow as a writer, maybe even sometimes as a person, haha. Like I said, the big thing is being respectful. No one's gonna burn you at the stake for making an innocent mistake, but it's up to you to not be defensive about it and to learn from it instead! We're all learning, in the end :)

I admit that I am guilty of making descriptions like "mocha hair," "chocolate eye(d)/hair(ed)/skin(ned)," "honey eye(d)/skin(ned)," "milky," "creamy," "strawberry/cherry lips" etc. to ALL ethnicities, for poetic reasons. 😅 Because I don't think of food, I think of color. I search for shades of skin tone, how to describe eyes, shades of color-- and a lot of colors use names related to food or drinks. It reminds me of when I was a kid, I would say I am burnt toast skinned because I had no idea how to describe my skin tone. I think it all depends on what context you use the description for, because I always felt uncomfortable saying "black" or "white" when it came to skin. Also, it's like a once-in-every-blue-moon type of situation to use food names because I always try to diversify descriptions so it doesn't seem like I am insistent in one word. Plus, you don't describe a person's appearance all the time.

The older I got and the more I wrote, the less I depended on media representation and relied more on real-life people to write out characters from other nationalities. Because TV/movie/series tropes tend to be... bad. Because another problem is that they make characters to just... exist or to say "Hey look, this character is from x race/ x sexuality. Isn't this what you wanted? We're progressive!" but do absolutely nothing to build them up. They treat them as nothing more than a label so people can approve of Hollywood. It's equally offensive imo.

I'm still learning to make characters from varying nationalities while straying away from stereotypes. Because I want them to be people rather than a checkbox. Learning about culture has helped a LOT, particularly when it came to the East as a whole. Every country is so much more than just 1 characteristic.

FINALLY got a chance and the spoons to read this (while procrastinating cleaning my room).

This is sooooo beautifully written and I love that you linked to outside guides!

I used to do the stereotypical stuff a lot—slanted eyes, pale skin, slender, dainty. I just tend to like writing as dainty characters, and writing an Asian seemed like an easy shortcut to the younger me.

Since then, I've done so much research, and it makes the character so much MORE than they used to be. Kina went from being random Asian woman to a Chinese Red Yao woman struggling to reconnect with the culture she was kidnapped from as a child, who lies about who she is in order to try to protect herself. Jikei Nakia became Narisawa Jikei, who moved away from Japan but remembers the old-fashioned spiritual traditions, constantly evaluating and learning about the home he left as a child in order to feel a connection with the parents he hasn't seen in a very long time. Nanzo Eiji, called Crow by his lazy/racist coworkers, is a Japanese Tengu who speaks using otokorashii (manly language, which often uses brevity, tone, and implied subjects/meanings to convey ideas rather than the more polite onnarashii) and who seeks out young women who match his ideal 'type' in order to try to find a wife.

All of my Asian characters have become so much more, all because I just got curious—and yes, most are Japanese because I've had the most interest in that specific part of Asia, but I'm expanding more as I learn more.

To anyone reading this guide: make those derpy stereotypes, but then use those characters as a stepping point for research. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, but use them as ways to learn. Learn all you can, and it will make you feel so much more confident.

Didn't even know this thread existed before I saw the ad, but I'm glad I came across it. Even though I'm Asian (American) myself, it's important to brush up on what I write to make sure that I'm not accidentally falling into stereotype for ethnicities I don't share. Awesome guide!

I've described my Taiwanese OC as having narrow eyes that widen when she's frightened...ooof. Definitely won't happen again.

EDIT: I just checked: "Naomi" is a Japanese name, not a Taiwanese one. Either I'll change her name, or I'll change her nationality to Japanese.

Decency and respect for Asian characters is unfortunately not as common a mentality in writers as you'd believe. Unintentionally or not, they're often reduced to strange fetishes at the whimsy of the writer; Pav's guide here is a good resource to address some common pitfalls that even writers with the best intentions may fall into.
 
Thank you for your well thought out post. If you wouldn't mind I'd love to ask for some more of your thoughts...

As a sci-fi and fantasy writer I usually create worlds where Earth as we know it and the cultures within it don't exist. No Asia, Europe, Africa, Americas, etc. Examples of this include Star Wars and Lord of The Rings. Myself and many other writers want to have diversity in our stories with representation of various races but struggle with how to indicate race equitably.

Historically western fantasy stories have centered white people and used fantasy races like elves, dwarves, hobbits, orcs, goblins, centaurs, fae, pixies, etc as a substitute (often with racist parallels) for other ethnicities. In sci-fi, they are typically aliens like Wookies, Ewoks, Sand People and Jawas, or robots. *Or they may be Naboolians who are predominantly white and whose caucasian princess Amidala has a sudo-asian name and wears traditional Mongolian attire :/

Many writers struggle with how to equitably include various human ethnicities, communicate what the parallel ethnicity is to our world, but without the geographic and cultural markers/descriptors of our world. The general advice given is to not indicate race at all and 'let the reader envision it as they want.' Which just results in erasing representation.

The WWC guide is great for avoiding many pitfalls, but there are many elements it does not address. The guides that I have found all advise writers to specifically describe a particular character's individual features because Asian people's features are diverse. But there are two challenges to this, one, we need to be able to describe groups of people in our writing, not just individuals, and two, this nuanced diversity is true of all peoples. There is great diversity in the features of Black people and White people, but we have non-offensive culturally-accepted language that allow painting with a broad brush to indicate to our audience a racial parallel.

WWC's recommendations on descriptors are almost entirely for individuals and don't necessarily signal to the reader that someone is of an Asian race. And personally I've always hated "heavy-lidded" and "hooded." For one, I find them inaccurate because the lids aren't "heavy" (makes me think sleepy) nor to they look like hoods, and two, I've seen it used derogatorily to indicate a shifty character. I'm also confused why 'angled/angular' is okay but tilted is not? Since they mean the same, shouldn't 'angular' not be used too? anyway...

So if writers were to describe the unifying features of a group of people from a fictional region in a fictional universe where Earth's cultures don't exist... how might writers equitably paint with a broad brush to indicate that a group of people are East Asian with simple physical description?

Personally I'd argue this is the way to go about it because you aren't writing about our world and therefore no parallels need to be drawn.

This erases representation and centers cultural dominance to those with power.

Point is, I don't think you really should try to cram representation into races and species that aren't human, because, well, they're not human.

This is what I was saying. My pointing out that historically western fantasy and sci-fi depicted white people and then non-human races to the exclusion of other human races was a criticism.

Although again, if not on Earth, why do they have "Asian influences" in their culture to begin with? That's a thing for humans from this rock after all. It wouldn't logically exist, or shouldn't anyway, in a fantasy universe that has no connection to our own.

Representation is important. Period. Again, I'm asking about indicating the race of a populace in fiction. I'm NOT saying that representation is influenced by a culture (this is allowed in fiction, done equitably, but it is not what I'm asking about).

The audience as consumers of the media will draw parallels - that's the point of stories. So the question is - how to do this equitably. The answer is not 'why bother.' Why? Because representation is important. So if your argument is why would Asian people exist in another universe not our own... that argument should be applied to ALL human representation. In reality, real aliens if they exist will probably have corporeal forms that look nothing like humans... but humans will often make aliens look humanoid - first, to personify them so we can empathize easier, and two, when represented on screen, it makes production much cheaper and easier. So... if humans are being represented, all racial variations of humans should be represented, and in an equitable way. The question remains - how to equitably communicate races from East Asia to a reader.

And regarding groups, you could always have a character from another culture describe what they know as a person looking in from the outside. If they get something wrong, you can always have them meet a member of that culture later on and have a dialogue begin.

The question is not what character should describe it to the audience, but what descriptors specifically are equitable and not offensive.

For example, if I were to describe a group of people who are similar to those in Western Europe I might say 'people with lighter skin and dark hair that often tended to waviness, sometimes curly.' If more Northern Europe I might say 'people with even fairer skin with generally light hair colors that range from strawberry to pale golden and sometimes dirty blonde.' Those all overgeneralize the people of European regions, but it communicates to the audience a general enough vibe to get the idea. From here I would describe individual characters and how they may be similar or different to their people group. Because in the region where I would be first publishing the book these fair-skinned people hold power, I generally don't have to worry about these descriptors marginalizing anyone... though there are some marginalized groups so I would avoid some descriptors that might indicate racial and/or cultural stereotypes (avoid trying to indicate Jewish people by describing hooked noses, for example).

Wanting to avoid similar pitfalls, I'm seeking words and descriptors that can indicate people who - lets say would be played by actors of East Asian heritage should it be made into a movie. What descriptors could be equitable to describe similar features shared by a group of East Asian people groups to indicate their Earth parallel? And this question really needs to be answered by those who would be represented by this representation.
