  • IT CAN THINK
It's 2037. It's been 20 years to the day since the first Duststorm.
The first one was small. A meteorite fell and broke open in Russia. Nobody thought anything of it.
Just over two pounds of Dust spilled out, and a breeze picked it up.
Then people started caring.

In months, shelters began to be built around the world. It didn't take much. One loose mote could wipe out entire cities, consuming them and their inhabitants in odd fountains of chaos and disorder that laughed in the face of natural laws and common sense alike.

And people hid and cowered.
Even in the shelters, life wasn't the same. It didn't take long to realise that even the newborn children were somehow different.

Eight years went by. The fear began to subside.
People grew braver. The Dust wasn't hanging over them anymore.
They opened their doors.
And the Dust was everywhere.
It too had multiplied, permeating the entire atmosphere.
The very air had become toxic, and the world had settled into something new.

LDu0EYU.jpg

But it couldn't kill everyone.
Just as the Dust had killed, it also brought new life.
And even that merciless Dust which killed millions, perhaps billions, before, could not kill the children.

New diverse creatures rose from the Dust, who bonded with it, could command it.
The natural laws were decided by the Dust now.
For that reason, these new beings, the Ashen, were more powerful than humans had ever been.

The world was destroyed, but it was not ruined.
It is only just beginning.
Not all hope is lost for humanity.
Some of us can still walk outside.
The children from after that fateful day twenty years ago have a chance.
Because we too are Ashen.

From Dust we came, and to Dust we shall one day return.
But until that day comes, the world of our forefathers is ours now.
And we shall make it anew.
Dust
The Dust is a mysterious particle that came to Earth via meteorite, and has saturated the entire world in the space of twenty years. It randomly bends reality in strange ways and will kill any living thing that comes from a Dust-less environment in an instant just by being nearby, but appears to be sentient (although good luck trying to figure out any kind of motivation for it). It seems to be able to create its own life as part of its mysterious powers, and somehow rendered all humans born after it arrived Ashen, despite there not being a single mote of Dust in the shelters where they were born.

If the Dust in an area reaches a "critical mass", there will occasionally be a Duststorm that temporarily rends its surroundings into a bizarre, headachingly incomprehensible messes called "Neverlands". It usually takes around four days for Neverlands to return to normal, and they aren't especially dangerous once the storm has subsided. In fact, finding a fresh Neverland is often a great thing for Ashen, as it allows them to gather a lot of Dust very quickly. That is, assuming they're willing to deal with a lot of newly-animated monsters, which can be dangerous for those unprepared. Not to mention, while the Ashen can commune with the Dust, it is still fundamentally lethal to living things, and so anything caught in the Duststorm, Ashen or not, can be prepared to be distorted into non-existence.

The Dust is black, but glows in low light and when actively changing something. The individual motes are too small to see under anything short of an electron microscope, making any sample of Dust concentrated enough to be visible to the naked eye seem like "solid darkness", as well as being so small that despite the astounding quantity of Dust in the atmosphere, it's totally invisible in practical terms. It also doesn't appear to have any mass, and is nearly intangible, so it can't take solid or liquid forms, and any will it has is thus enacted by bringing something else to life.

Ashen
Beings that can communicate with the Dust. It's unknown what causes them to occur, but all life that can exist outside shelters is by definition Ashen, as the Dust will kill anything else. Even the grass is Ashen, which can cause curious things like forests that ensnare would-be explorers and statues that come to life to plant flowers. Ashen can utilise the Dust to manifest various abilities that are usually unique to themselves.

Dust is naturally attracted to Ashen, so it's easy for them to utilise their abilities under normal conditions, but it's not unheard of for them to go and gather Dust for the purposes of using more powerful abilities. As such, Dust is a precious commodity for the Ashen, and given that it is the one thing it is impossible for them to be able to synthesise, it is also used as currency.

Ashen aren't just humans, however. Even the ones who are human may have odd features, like strange eyes, animalistic features, or bizarre mutations. Some things are more subtle than others, but the standard of "normal" has long ceased to be come the Ashen generation.

Non-human Ashen include literally anything that the Dust has created or animated, the most notable among them being animated buildings, sentient forests, talking cats, and even creatures such as fairies and dragons.
Generally, non-human Ashen are hostile to humans by default, as they were not born of the Dust, only molded by it. It isn't unheard of for humans to tame, befriend, or command non-humans, however, as it has always been since the first smart monkey jumped on the back of a sabretooth tiger.

Non-Ashen are restricted to underground shelters, which Dust, as a component of the atmosphere, normally won't enter. They are, on average, equipped to support a population of 5,000 for 50 years, but most shelters are just a little over half-full, since the shelters were built to outlast the Dust. It doesn't look like that's going to happen.

The world is still young for the Ashen, and there is plenty to explore. Who knows how accurate those old maps still are with the Dust around? There's only one way to find out...

History: Try for at least a paragraph, but if you can do more, go for it.

So I hear. There's no rush, there's just a flag you may or may not trigger depending on how apprehensive Robin is and how amazingly headstrong and brash Beryl is.

Ah, the update.

rip 1.5k word post draft

I'm lazy so have the short version.

@Yaoi Master Gavin
@Viral
Have fun with this guy. If they try to examine the gargoyle, they'll "see" a few things about it.

Name:
Ryie Phoufou

Age:
14
Gender:
Female

History:
???

Personality:
Ryie is never really seems to be all there, but somehow manages to get by with a combination of luck and quick wits. This has led her to lead a fairly whimsical life, so the exact details of her personality depend on circumstances, company, and current phase of the moon. However, in general, she's quite happy-go-lucky, although it doesn't stop her from being a little sharp-tongued at times. She works surprisingly hard despite her deceptively absent-minded appearance, and is naturally very proud of her accomplishments, sometimes aggressively so. She is the kind of person that, if one is ever going to make friends with her, will do so likely within the hour they meet her. Those who do not within this period probably never will.

Likes: Rabbits, fields, naps
Dislikes: Skeletons, tight spaces, extreme luminosities (both light and dark)
Skills:
  • adept at sewing
  • impressive leg/lower body strength
  • skilled tracker
  • unhampered by nighttime conditions

Abilities:
Blink Arcadia - Ryie has the ability to reduce distance from a single point in her direct line of sight to zero, allowing her to cross large distances in a straight line instantly. However, it has a minimum range of a few dozen yards, so it's entirely useless if she doesn't have a large area to activate it in.
Instinct - Ryie has the ability to subconsciously react far faster than she has any right to, in certain instances before something even happens if it's fast enough.
Tireless - Ryie seems to have unlimited stamina. In reality, her energy is split into several "bars" which will deplete one by one and will recharge when not in use, so she almost always has reserves left over because she is constantly recovering her stamina whilst simultaneously expending it.
Breaker's Bone - Ryie can momentarily increase a single limb's weight and toughness enormously without changing its velocity.

Other: She made her coat herself. Talk shit about it and you will be smacked.

Ability:
Crowns of the Titan King
SAPPHIRE is in possession of exactly nine infallible arrows. These arrows, when fired, will not miss, cannot be blocked or evaded, and will absolutely destroy their target no matter what. Once fired, they are lost, but anything they pierce is permanently annihilated. So long as the arrow is not recovered, even something that could ordinarily be remade can never be restored.

Yo, fronds, where mah posts at? Has Iwaku done That One Thing again with the alerts or have I driven us into a brick wall?

Its Viral's go I believe.

I've been busy with midterms. I'll try and post probably either this weekend or next week.

Ah, of course, midterms. It's that time of year, isn't it? No wonder.

I can't say I'm a fan of the "predetermined order" thing, so I honestly don't mind who goes where.

@Nicole Birdy You sure know how to time things. I was just about to close off sign-ups. Roll yourself out a character sheet and I'll take a look.

Name: Rae
Age: 11
Gender: F

18a48263cd2acf2ec32291de03f90e9c.jpg

History: Her mother gave birth to her in a bunker. It was a crowded place with more people than it could hold and depression was everywhere. The struggles of this new life became to great and when Rae was only six years old, her mother killed herself. Alone in the world, Rae looked for a way out of the only home she had known. She, along with other children, devised a plan to enter the world they have only dreamed of.

So that's what they did, they got out. They bribed a guard to help them out, promising his daughter a life outside of the walls of their home. He did most of the work and gave his life to help them.

They fled through an abandoned workers tunnel, one that was thought to be closed off. But with the right tools, provided by the guard, they opened a doorway just large enough for them to get out.

Rae had been only eight at the time but despite what everyone thought, she was the first one out. But sadly the children were not careful and the dust of the outside world got in, killing everyone who hadn't been born there.

For a while she traveled in the group of kids but left after their leader was killed (along with other members of the group). She has been on her own ever since.

She disguised herself as a creature of the woods, living her days in a nest high in the trees. She learned to survive by watching the beings who lived around her, learned to blend into nature. She had always had a knack for getting into hard to reach places and by luck and strength alone, she lived.

Personality:

Cold: the lack of positive human interaction has left her cold towards others. She has built walls around herself in order not to get hurt, but maybe one day she will let those walls down.

Quiet: Rae is not one for many words and prefers to keep to herself. She is like a ghost, moving around the world silently. Her friends joked that a bell should be put on her since she snuck up on so many of them.

Intelligent: from a young age it was obvious she was highly intelligent, but she is also very innocent. She makes some people uncomfortable and is very unpredictable.

Mischievous: while she is quiet she is also known for playing practical jokes. Sometimes they go too far but for the most part she does alright
Likes: night, flowers, quiet
Dislikes: loud noises, people (ish)

Skills: stealth, quiet, athletic, can cook

Abilities: she can control and bend light, making it stay and disappear at will. On many occasions she has made herself invisible and hidden away from the monsters of the world. At times, when using the sun's light, she can make heat (the more intense and focused the light it, the hotter it is). But the moon's is much colder and brighter in many mysterious ways, a light she favors above all else. It is more difficult to control but after years of practice, she has mastered it. When making light disappear, it simply vanishes just like blowing out a candle.

Hey, your picture's busted. It looks like a private URL. Try linking it from a different source.

I would question how a handful of eight-year-olds can pry their way out of a bunker meant to weather out at least fifty years of exposure to a hypertoxic reality-warping atmosphere and all the superpowered monsters it births, but not, say, the child-lock on a medicine cabinet.

I'm slightly iffy about her powers. What, precisely, is she capable of? Or rather, what is she incapable of? All I know is she can make things glow with an unspecified amount of light for an unspecified period of time with unknown effects. Even if it is just turning things into lanterns, that just makes me curious as to quite how she survived, say, the house-giants, the dragons, or Otto's personal favourite, the glass trees.

Apart from that, everything checks out.

Heck that image worked before, rip
And OK, I'll edit those parts. Thank you for telling me :)

Is that any better? And I believe the image is working now but if it isn't I'll try something else :)

No problem. Let me know when you're done with your edits and I'll give it another look.

EDIT LITERALLY THREE SECONDS LATER: You're fast.

Lol it actually took me 20 min xD but yes, when I get down to it and inspired I can be quick (I am on my phone ATM so it takes a bit longer than I want lol)
Is everything good?

Just read over it. Picture is still dead as my insides. wait that's not the metaphor is it

Rest in potato, friendly yet mind-numbingly irresponsible guardsman.

The ability section still looks like a WIP to me. How much light can she use? How much heat can she generate? What's the difference between sunlight and moonlight (or moonlight and any light)? Oh, and about the "stay and disappear" aspect... What happens to the light she decides to make disappear?

How is that? Also I'll fix the image next period when I'm at a computer

Edit* how is the photo?

Ah, I see it. Normally I'd turn a photo down since everything else is art, but frankly it's taken so much trouble to get it working that you can keep it if you want.

I still don't know the difference between moonlight and other light, though. Is there one?
