Tribs suggested this great exercise, so here we go!

When we think about Holidays, we're usually only considering the setting for events and atmosphere. Often neglecting how the holidays in general, or even specific ones might affect the moods, feelings, and opinions of the characters involved.

In this exercise, detail out how your character feels about holidays. How do they approach them or think about them?

SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

 • How do they feel about their BIRTHDAY? Do they tell people about it? Do they like parties? Hate it? Ignore it?
 • How do they behave when it's someone else's birthday?
 • Do they have a religion where they celebrate certain holidays and not others? Christmas vs Hanukkah? Pagan rituals? No holidays at all?
 • Do they have a favorite holiday? Why do they like it so much?
 • Do they HATE any specific holidays? Did something happen on that day, or do they have other reasons?
 • Do they get in to the spirit of holidays?
 • Do they like having parties for them?
 • Do they decorate?
 • Do they spend time with family or friends on holidays?
 • List how specific holidays and how that character deals with them!

Birthdays! Wren's birthday is mostly celebrated by his parents. He has never thought to tell his friends when he was born and they assume that he just doesn't celebrate. He doesn't mind presents or a small party with his family.

For other people's birthdays, Wren is usually supportive. He likes to show up with a wrapped gift and host gift. Wren has manners, he's moderately good at using them.

No religious holidays for Wren. His family does celebrate Yule rather than Christmas but that is because it just makes sense in terms of his setting.

Wren doesn't love or hate any specific holidays, at least not out loud. Wren does have a special place in his heart for Yule though.

Wren's parents take care of the holidays for the most part but he does pitch in and do his part. He likes wrapping presents and enjoys setting up illusions and light shows. Anything that takes him outside, like hanging fairy-lights on the house is saved for last because he likes to do it after dark so he can see his work immediately. As such, Wren spends his holidays with his parents and extended family mostly. Of course this is subject to change as Wren is currently only seventeen and lives with his family when he's not at school. Once he moves out, Wren will probably still do a little decorating and go home for the holidays anyway otherwise his Mum will fuss.

New Years – Usually at home with his parents. There is normally a party.
May Day – At school. No real celebration.
Summer Solstice – Vacation!
Harvest/Halloween – At school. Whatever is going on there.
Yule – Home again with the parents. Small party with gift giving and grandparents and other extended family and friends of family.

How do they feel about their BIRTHDAY? Do they tell people about it? Do they like parties? Hate it? Ignore it?

~Z used to love her birthday as a child, but now she hates her birthday because it reminds her of the day everyone ran away from her when she needed them the most. So, in the end, she tells no one about it.

-Nani likes her birthday. She doesn't get extremely excited over it, but that's partially because her pirate crew gets more excited than she can. They have parties that lasts all day and night to celebrate their Captain.

How do they behave when it's someone else's birthday?

~Doesn't celebrate other people's birthdays. She doesn't really like other people.

-Nani celebrates her crew members' birthdays with just as much excitement and vigor they do for hers.

Do they have a religion where they celebrate certain holidays and not others? Christmas vs Hanukkah? Pagan rituals? No holidays at all?

~If she remembers correctly, with her family, they celebrated Hanukkah, which makes her Jewish, though she doesn't practice her religion. That, and she's actually never celebrated Thanksgiving. Just because.

-Nani has a crew of different backgrounds. She gets to celebrate all the holidays they celebrate, and respectfully understands why others can't celebrate certain holidays.

Do they have a favorite holiday? Why do they like it so much?

~Halloween is Z's favorite. It's a day she can scare people to death and get free candy. She also likes St. Patrick's day because she likes the color green and she can pinch people.

-Nani is versatile and likes all the holidays or at least respects them. Her favorite would have to be Thanksgiving though because she's thankful for her amazing crew- and it's a huge feast to pig out on.

Do they HATE any specific holidays? Did something happen on that day, or do they have other reasons?

~She absolutely detests Valentine's day. There's not even a good reason, she just doesn't like it. Probably because she's jealous.

-Nani doesn't too much care for a holiday that requires you to wear green. (St. Patrick's Day) She thinks it's kind of silly, but she doesn't hate it. It's just her least favorite.

Do they get into the spirit of holidays?

~Only on Halloween will she get into the spirit of the holidays.

-Yes. Yes she does.

Do they like having parties for them?Do they decorate?

~Nope, no parties or decorations. That doesn't mean she won't crash someone else's.

-Nani does party with her crew, however they don't decorate. It's hard to do that as a pirate.

Do they spend time with family or friends on holidays?

~Neither. She's all alone in her big cruel world.

-Friends, however Nani will send her parents things to let them know she's still thinking about them and all.

List how specific holidays and how that character deals with them!

Christmas/Hanukkah

~She'll decide to be kind and hold off on her destruction. Even watch a few movies.

-Party with friends, give gifts, and send things to her family.

New Years

~Plays with fireworks, although she may occasionally blow up things with them.

-She gets drunk under the stars with her crew. Nice way to party.

Halloween

~She dresses up and scares people and takes candy. More than likely she steals it, however she may occasionally be nice and ask.

-Nani doesn't celebrate it.

Valentine's day

~Stays inside as the world infests with pink and hearts, but does eat chocolates.

-Nani doesn't pay attention to the holiday, however she may get a nice gift from the grew crew. She is kind of oblivious to the love aspect.
