Humans and animals
We exchange valuable materials with each other, and in doing so, keep each other alive. The humans exchange their trash, carbon, with the plantlife. In exchange, they give us their trash, oxygen. This is perhaps the greatest case of one's trash being another's treasure, no? Over the years, humans have evolved, both in attitude and in architecture. In doing so, we've slowly started killing off our "business partners", so to speak.
The world has survived yet another year, now on the dawn of the year 2020. Civilization has been expanding their boundaries, as always. Of course, it's nowhere near what you'd imagine a futuristic to be like, because it's not futuristic. Humanity is developing new technologies, but none of it is anywhere near ready to use. Amazingly, pollution has been all but eliminated, leading to a large boom in the plantlife. In addition, medical care has become more readily available, though many diseases have yet to be cured.
The government is unchanged, for the most part. However, there are a few new branches devoted solely to experimentation, though it's mainly to improve technology as quickly as possible.
Everything seemed fine, and it was, for quite a long time. Humanity couldn't ask for more, but curiousity prevailed over safety. Nobody's quite sure what caused it, but a mist began enveloping major cities. It took everyone by surprise, and had adverse effects. People began to change. They developed mutations, odd ones, for no reason. Despite how amazing the health system had become, no medicine seemed to effect it. Those affected by the mist were damned. It was simply...incurable.

Chevalier City, 2020- Most high to mid-class citizens have been able to afford specially made air filters to avoid the mist, keeping themselves safe in the process. Lately, however, a few of the unlucky victims were found with piercings in their skin, resembling cuts and bite marks. Little progress has been made to prevent these attacks, leaving the less fortunate families prone to infection.
A section of the government has gone rogue, disappearing off the map in the span of a single night, taking their equipment and knowledge with them.
Apparently, they were misusing government equipment for their own experiments, and were scheduled to be killed the next day, as they knew too much. With no traces to search for them with, the government is forced to investigate the mist, though the majority would rather send out the grunts to do that job for them.
Rumor has it that the same rogue branch that went missing is behind a tiny chain of disappearances in Chevalier City, but nothing is certain. Most simply dismiss it as some form of ghost story...But the kidnapped know the truth. And this is where you come in.
