~ Welcome to The Last Stand College ~
~ A Monster Hunter's Field Guide to Survival ~
~** Disclaimer: This has nothing to do with the Monster Hunter games. This is an original world pitch. **~

[I am working on thread graphics and an overtop view of the town, and worldmap at the moment!
This thread is therefore still under some minor construction! Bear with me!]

Welcome to the official OOC of AMHFGTS! This is the character compendium and those who have bios they would like to put up. It's also the central hub for communicating and making sure everyone's on the right page if anyone is confused. Given the amount of interest we had in the last thread, I'm going to say signups are now closed! (There are a lot of folks involved and too big means long waits between posts, we still want it to be manageable!) If you posted in The Interest Thread, then you're already ready to post a bio here; no need to ask permission! Just fill out a form, and then I'll go through character approvals (which will be painless, I just want everyone on equal ground and on the same page.) The form is below: Please only use 1 or 2 OCs for this RP for manageable post-wait times! As a note for character art; I don't care what kind of references you use; so long as we can all visualize a character you're playing.

• Character Art: (if you have it, if not, description!; links only please!)
• Character Name:
• Nickname:
• Race: (human, elf, halfling, or dwarf only)
• Height / Weight:
• Age:
• Special Abilities: (skills, strengths, minor magic abilities)
• Weaknesses: (must be equal to amount of abilities)
• Personality:
• Relationships: (friends or family they care for)
• Their Background: (history story)
• Personal Goal: (what do they want to achieve in life here)

•~ Main Idea Summary:
  • Your character's entered into a college dedicated to the fine and heroic art of killing monsters and protecting the local cities and villages. The only catch is, since we're still in college, we aren't masters at anything yet. Classes, studies, and practice are all on or around school campus, and some of them can get pretty damn hands-on and dangerous. The goal? Graduate and start kicking some REAL monster ass!
•~ The Last Stand College:
  • Our world, the entire continent of Almsbough, is infested with monsters the last two hundred years and no one knows why. The longer time goes on, the worse it seems to get. The Last Stand is a college dead in the center of Almsbough, a massive wide tower surrounded by fields and training grounds, and along the outside, gated off with two-mile high, five foot thick brick and mortar. It's a bastion of safety for local villagers and cities, and others come from all over Almsbough to join and earn their Silver Star (graduation fighting permit.) Our characters are here; already approved and in, and the start of the RP will be us moving into dorms and getting ourselves acquainted with our first day's classes! We're going to start at the very bottom and work our way entirely up to graduation and fighting monsters! (This is a VERY long-term RP! I like long running stories!)
•~ Character Requirements:
  • Yeah this actually has to happen. Since we're a monster hunting college, technically we need races that are humanoid, and well, not monsters. Humans, elves, halflings, dwarves, and gnomes in D&D are all perfect examples of races that are acceptable! Things like half-elementals, half-demon (cambions), or dhampirs are case-by-case basis, I would have to approve of whether or not their history, background, and personality would be fitting. Things like elementals, angels, eldrich horrors, ogres and giants would not work.
•~ Classes & Curriculums:
  • The basics is that since we're a college, we have classes. But rather than have the over-complicatedness of having about a million different classes and class times for different characters, it's broken down into a very simple list, with simple times. Please note, no one will be posting in the thread to go "the time has changed for this class," it's just a reference as RPing for flow/direction! These classes and times during the day are as such as 10-hour days:
    • History - 8:00 am (You gotta know the people you're defending)
Geography - 9:00 am (You gotta know where you are in order to travel, too)
Language & Writing - 10:00 am (For learning to communicate with other races, etc)
Field Studies - 11:00 am (Learning what monsters are what, strengths, weaknesses, etc)
Fitness & Battle Maneuvers - 12:00 pm (Keep yourself in line and train to be badass)
      Lunch Break
Weapons & Armor Training - 1:00 pm (Field practice with weapons to find your niche)
Wilderness Survival - 2:00 pm (On-site field practice with treating wounds, being lost, etc)
Animal Handling - 3:00 pm (Mounts, wild animals, and how to handle them etc)
Improvisation & Resourcefulness - 4:00 pm (Random danger thrown your way; figure it out!)
Monster of the Day - 5:00 pm (Professor Baelin is a dick. Meet a monster every day to learn to fight live!)
      Day Ends - 6:00 pm
•~ After-School Shenanigans:
  • Crazy bad adventures behind the professor's backs? Ever want to explore that dungeon where Professor Baelin holds all those monsters he likes to throw at you at the end of the day? What about that one fenced off lake everyone says to stay away from the edge of? Hmmm... Guess it's time to break some rules and go exploring with a couple friends, right? Or maybe you just like to stay home and study... Nerd...
•~ Graduation + Live Hunting:
  • Okay, so we all reach the end of the RP and we've all graduated. What then? Why a new RP thread of course! With the SECOND chapter of our world! Our characters live on the battlefield kicking ass and taking names. I'll open up a new thread dedicated to near-D&D like campaigns wherein we'll travel around free around Almsbough and start our careers. No dice, no DM systems, just regular old Monster Hunting RP without all the college and learning elements.
•~ Magic + Technology:
  • Magic is everywhere in the world, but very limited. Most folks can use minor telekinesis at a young age and simply learn in High School how to handle it. Therefore, while in TLS, you will already be able to use some of these abilities in regards to fighting monsters. However, the school is mainly focused on melee battles and weapons, such as crossbows, swords, and maybe very minor technological weapons that deal shocks or something special; though they would be expensive. Please keep this in mind, as the level of electricity is limited here. The setting is mostly medieval.
  • Basically, you cannot summon a 10ft long gun to blast a monster away, but you can telekinesis that pen through its head. Using magic "orbs" or fireballs as weapons against monsters is possible but only small ones and it would take a lot out of a person to gather the energy to do it. Magic uses human energy here; if you surpass what your body can do, you pass out. (You cannot pull so much you die; you would pass out before you got the chance to.)
  • If you use a combination of magic and technology, that is fine. Please be aware of basic limitations and what would and wouldn't make sense in a medieval and limited technical standpoint, and that it isn't ridiculously overpowered. This comes down to basic common sense and personal creativity!

Checking in real quick. I'll make a character tomorrow at the latest.

Quick question on magic, when you say we can telekinesis a pen through a monsters head, would this be a very difficult feat? The way you mention telekinesis makes it seem pretty easy and common and if it's that easy to kill a monster with telekinesis, why use anything else?

• Character Name: Gareth Bryne
• Nickname: N/A
• Race: Human
• Height / Weight: 5' 11" 185lb
• Age: 20
• Special Abilities: Gareth focuses on long range support with the use of his trusty heavy rifle.
-High caliber slug. Your basic shot. Average reload speed, average distance, and only having a huge spike in damage.
-Buster Round. Low range, slow reload, but can punch through just about anything it hits. The recoil is enough to launch him 10 ft backwards. He's been trying to use it to reposition, but has yet to do more then slam into the wall.
-Marker round. In case it gets away. Longest range of the bunch, but was designed to just hit and mark the target, nothing much else.
• Weaknesses: As soon as the gap between him and the monster is closed, his fighting ability drops dramatically, to the point that he's more likely to accidentally hit an ally then the monster. This has not happened yet, but instructors fear that it's only a matter of time before it happens unless they can get him to remain calm, even under the extreme pressure that monster hunting puts on him.
• Personality: Gareth is loud, plain and simple. Oh he can whisper with the best of them, but as soon as you try sneaking around he'll trip over his own feet and bring a vase crashing down for good measure.
• Relationships: He cares especially for his grandma and grandpa, followed by the rest of his family. The rest of his family being his mom, dad, two other brothers, and four sisters.
• Their Background: Gareth had lived a rather humdrum life of a farmer with the rest of his family. Truth be told he quickly grew bored of it and wanted to do something more then watch the crops grow and make sure the animals weren't dumb enough to walk off a cliff. So he enrolled at Last Stand, and he was accepted for two reasons. 1.) There aren't ever enough Monster Hunters, and 2.) they were impressed by his strength. If they could polish him up, then he'd make for an excellent hunter.
• Personal Goal: He wants to be remembered for doing something heroic.
I feel like there should be more to what I have and will no doubt come back to this and edit it as needed.

First draft of my sheet; might be prone to some changes because I'm not sure if her unique spells are 'overpowered' for the current level/style of magic in the RP. Please tell me if they are, because I'm not going for an op caster character at all. Also, tell me if the backstory could do with a little changing, I admit I rushed it a bit.

Astana Nvemba

Race: Human | ♀
Age: 19
Appearance: Astana's skin is smooth and of a rich chocolate colour; her wide pale blue eyes seemingly on a constant, distant gaze. Her lips and nose are well-set and thick, and the bridge of her nose is dotted with a few freckles. Her deep charcoal hair is silky, long and comes just past her shoulders, with a small overhang of hair covering one half of her face. Small markings of ocean-blue are delicately painted on her cheeks and just under her eyes, likely from her cultural background. She stands considerably tall at 6"1, with a fairly broad and muscular build that weighs her in at roughly 13.5 stone.

Personality: Astana is mostly characterized by her extremely laid back attitude. Everything she does, from her speech to her movements, seems very slow and calm. Combined with her imposing build, she's seen as a bit peculiar, but in a good way. She's kind at heart and is generally quite amiable, although sometimes seen as a little 'too' kind, as she prefers to eliminate monsters in 'humane' manners and can't stand the suffering of other living beings, even if they're the ones trying to kill you. Astana can be quite lazy at times, and often daydreams (and sometimes even falls asleep) in classes where she isn't physically doing anything. She isn't very social, and prefers to distance herself from others, although she tends to like the company of other quiet and relaxed individuals. She tends to dislike those who are loud, 'class clowns' or dominant, and can't seem to understand people who find fighting and killing monsters 'fun'.
/// /// /// /// /// /// /// /// /// ///
Special Abilities/Strengths
+Unique Spell: Soothe - With a touch, Astana can heal the minor wounds of an injured ally, and dull their pain for a short amount of time to re-invigorate them in the middle of battle. This spell takes a while to complete, and isn't capable of healing major wounds or internal injuries.
+Unique Spell: Pacify - If a monster/other enemy is badly injured or generally out of energy, Astana can use a pacifying spell which largely dulls pain for the monster, but also greatly slows down their muscles and reflexes, sometimes even relaxing them to the point where they fall asleep. The amount of energy Astana needs to expend to use this depends on the size of the monster, and she needs to physically touch them with the palm of her hand to use this. Used for humane kills.
+Hammer Artist - Astana is quite good with heavy weapons in general thanks to her muscularity, but large, two-handed hammers are her specialty. Her strikes are slow, but hit extremely hard. She tends to focus on only the head to destroy the brain for instant, painless kills.
+Slow & Steady - In Astana's case, it most definitely wins the race. If given a lot of time to make something, it will be made with care, grace, and of a high quality. Similarly, if given the opportunity to wind up an attack, the impact of the strike will be tremendous. But this mindset obviously has its downsides.
+Animal Empathy - Astana's kind, slow, and gentle aura she carries with her seems to naturally connect with animals. Non-aggressive beasts and creatures just seem to love her, and on a rare occasion, aggressive beasts can seem reluctant to attack her. As a result, she has a hidden skill in taming and mounting mostly unknown to her.

Weaknesses
-Slowpoke - Astana's very calm demeanor results in her brain being less wired than most's. Her reaction time is slow, and she's much more likely to be caught off guard rather than dodging an attack.
-Dopey - Simply put, Astana isn't very clever and is bad at memorizing things. This can cause frustration for her teachers.
-Fumbler - Astana's hand-eye coordination is subpar, resulting in a big lack of dexterity. As a result, she performs badly when using bladed weapons and 'fiddly' weapons, and generally can't do many quick, fancy maneuvers.
-Weak Stomach - Astana gets put off and will become very shaky at the sight of large amounts of blood or gore, be it from a monster or a human being, and monsters who emit slime or other disgusting substances will easily throw her off.
-Humane Slayer - Astana's heart is too soft. So much so that if she causes a monster to howl in pain or suffer before it dies, her actions will become a lot more hesitant. She prefers to quickly and painlessly kill things in one fell swoop, or use her pacify spell to give her foe a peaceful death. If it's an option, she will avoid killing her foe altogether.
/// /// /// /// /// /// /// /// /// ///
Relationships: Helia Nvemba [Mother], Salador Nvemba [Father], Zyon Nvemba [Older Brother/Deceased], Rhia Nvemba [Grandmother], Grodan Nvemba [Grandfather/Deceased]

Background:
Astana grew up within an obscure village in an arid, desert region, where survival was made extremely difficult due to the lack of trade routes thanks to monster attacks. Whilst the village was able to get by thanks to the area being relatively safe of monsters (compared to most other regions, at least) the place was struck with poverty, and it was clear to everyone in the village that life couldn't go on like this. The village suddenly made a decision abandon the place and move to an area closer to the fabled Last Stand college, where they could fulfill their dreams of living in comfort and safety in these troubled times.

Before the journey, Astana was trained by her mother in the simple arts of fighting in case of a monster attack in the villagers' journey to richer lands, though her older brother received most of the training by her father. The family didn't really get along and were generally unhappy thanks to their quality of life, causing Astana to generally be a quiet and slow-acting child. Regardless, she naturally had a kind nature, and went out of her way to help others through injuries and sickness with medical knowledge passed down by her grandmother.

The journey to a village near The Last Stand went well, but not without monster attacks. Thanks to the determination and preparation of the villagers, they managed to fight off most of the threats with the help of a caravan guard. But it didn't come without loss. Only around 65% of the villagers were left by the time they made it to this safe haven. And in those losses, Astana's brother was one of them. She didn't know what to think. What to say. What to do. But all she knew was that it was tearing her mother and father apart, and she couldn't bear it anymore.

Out of respect for her brother and to cheer up her parents, she vowed to graduate in The Last Stand like he originally vowed to do. She pushed her body to its limit getting it to the form it needed to be to earn her Silver Star, and deep inside, the monster-fighting life wasn't one for her. She wasn't a fan of fighting, and she'd always been disturbed by the thought of putting monsters through great pain in order to bring them down. It was a thought that had always made her frowned upon and considered a danger, so she kept her morals to herself when applying for the college in order to pass. Doing her best to ignore her losses and family, Astana strives to graduate, keeping her graceful and dead-calm personality with her.

Personal Goal: Astana is a little clueless as to what her true goal in life is other than graduating in The Last Stand. She only does what she does because she promised her family to in honour of her now deceased brother. Although, deep inside, she wishes there was a way monsters and humans could live in harmony so the neverending fighting could come to an end, but she knows that's literally impossible. Monsters can't be reasoned with. If only there was a way...

• Character Name: Zhao, Nabe • Nickname: N/A TBD

• Race: Human • Height / Weight: 160cm (5'3") / 52kg (114lb) • Age: 19

• Special Abilities:

Magic Talisman User: Basic knowledge of making magical seals, mostly for binding or burning a target. Spell Talisman's take a long time to make and contain magical reserves. So far has only a basic understanding of the craft. The following two are useable to one degree or another. While other form of Talisman's exsist the principle is much the same. The mage casting prepares seals days or even weeks in advance with their own blood as the ink upon special blessed parchment. As a result this infuses the seals with the mage's own blood and magic, seemingly this magic is heredity based. Chants can be said with the seals release for adding stopping power.

  • Seal Talisman Bind: A paper talisman that when used in combination with others can produce a layer of binding coils of magical energy, or static lightning to paralyze. Generally its comparable to cages or snares made of heavier materials.
  • Seal Talisman Burn: A seal that bursts into flame upon contact with any surface when used.

Dualist Fencer: Skilled in facing one, or a small group of opponents in sword play.

Speedy and Agile: Nabe is remarkably fast and quick on her feet, with her light fame Nabe stands on par with some of the more nimble Elves.

Fast reflexes: Time is money, or so Zao maintains, given this mindset she often is quicker to react to opportunities than most. Coupled with her speed she is not one to be called clumsy, ever.

Divine Capital: Nabe seems to have a touch with money, and haggling, in addition she'll sell rather useless Talismans as charms to gullible fools. May be seen running a fortune telling stand during various school based events, such as festivals or fairs. One could call it a conman's game, but at times these capitalistic fortunes have came true.

• Weaknesses:

Magical Limitations: Nabe was trained by her Grandmother in the basic use of Talisman's which are highly specialized form of Magic. Given this her aptitude for other forms of magic beyond the bare basics is highly limited. Being her form of magic is heredity based, it is possible the same gifted blood in an ironic twist of fate, is cursed in regards to other magic.

Glass Cannon: Nabe is a fast, quick hitting artist with her sword and talismans, unfortunately or perhaps unsurprisingly Nabe's physical defense is very much in normal human terms, she cannot endure a long fight or take many hard hits.

Stingy and callous: Nabe in spite of having skills to money making and bartering, has unusual bad luck in regards to keeping it. Because of this she can be rather stingy and often petty in her treatment of others, with holding supplies or information until it must be shared, or a quick copper peice can be earned.

Blood Knight: Nabe loves battle as much as money, maybe even more. Humanoid or monster doesn't matter much to the Spell Sword. While a serious foe is not to be taken likely, Nabe see's no reason in communicating with opponents.

Questionable Teamwork: Nabe does not work very well in a team, that's not to say she's against teamwork, just that she is out for number one. She'll do her bit, but may hold judgement against others who fail, often complaining if they are slowing the group. With those she's able to trust however, most teamwork seems to go well enough.

• Personality: Nabe could be said to superficially have a somewhat nice and well mannered personality, while difficulties in group activities are noted rather easily, she'll often finish any task she sets out to. While not a class clown, her mercantile hobbies can prove disruptive if left unchecked. Utterly Stubborn and head strong, she has her own world view which can be difficult to shake.

Possessing a love for battle and money it doesn't much matter to her what needs to be removed to claim a "mark". Because of this being at odds or even in conjunction with her smiling polite persona, it can cause some to question her sanity. A fact she just seems to laugh off.

Observant and somewhat Social Nabe seems to alternate between watching the room, or being the center of attention within it. Can have a bit of an insulting and foul mouth towards those she does not like. While very stingy and greedy with her coin, Nabe is no stranger to cooking and cleaning and has been known to do the former for guests or those who drop by her room on good terms.

She tends to dislike others that need "to be carried" as she would put it, those who show too much mercy and Pacifists. Given her own strengths and weaknesses, Nabe will often try and settle a fight with a full on attack, knowing defense or attrition is not in her favor. Always a bit busy or on the go, Nabe is a heavy sleeper.

• Relationships: Zhao, Zen (Father Alive), Zhao, Akeno (Mother Alive) Zhao, Suifon (Grandmother-Father side Alive) Zhao, Mai (Younger Sister, Alive) Akihito, Seita (Grandfather- Mothers side Alive)

• Their Background: Nabe comes from the Zhao Family and its sub branches in the Village of Isamu. Renowned for it's Talisman magic the related families and the Region has produced many Monster Hunters over the years. Typically the Talisman magic is heredity based, and those who show a development towards it are trained hard before they join any schools, upon such assignment they are expected to do their best and give it all.

Given all of this it could be said while Nabe didn't want for anything the life was not all that easy, while a safe and overwhelmingly martial village, danger through intensive training was always a misstep away, sometimes with dire consequences. Being a sought after location Nabe also picked up on aspects of mercantilism from traveling merchants, and her own people that made money off of the more gullible merchants and tourists. Cloaked in mysticism and secret traditions much of growing up in the village could be said to be a scripted act and play.

Upon her coming of age Nabe who studied under he grandmother was tasked with one more mission, Graduate from a certain Monster College. With a basic understanding of her Family magic, Nabe is hopeful she can learn more while enrolled, otherwise she would need to pay her grandmother for the next bits of knowledge. Grumbling about what that would entail, the young woman picks up her priestess garments, armored platting, and curved Katana, making her way for the next step to her destiny... and hopefully more Gold.

• Personal Goal:
"Fame and Glory! Also Riches! Well mostly Riches.."

Hello there! I'm interested in this RP and my friend RAS(@RedArmyShogun) told me to ask you guys if there was still a role open for another player.

So, I'm just here to ask if there really is a spot for another RPer in this? =P

Quick question on magic, when you say we can telekinesis a pen through a monsters head, would this be a very difficult feat? The way you mention telekinesis makes it seem pretty easy and common and if it's that easy to kill a monster with telekinesis, why use anything else?

As stated, magic takes energy to perform. While it comes naturally to do it occasionally which is why it's already taught in high school it in no way is so easy that you could do it forever and ever and ever and still have energy left to not pass out. Hence you learn with weapons, and, also as stated, you use magic as an emergency or backup.

Spots may open up if there are users from the other thread who do not return to post characters here; but otherwise for now they are closed for post-wait manageability, which I mentioned on the OP.

I'll be reading through character bio's tomorrow to see if anyone else from the other thread has popped in yet to post! For now if you guys have stuff you want to edit in or tweak if you see mistakes or things you want to change, feel free!

Done with mine, let me know if there are any problems.

I'll get to work on mine soon. Life and such. Had to pack for winter break and stuff
