Little is known about the Aldertree Institute other than it has been owned by the Mayhew family for eight generations. Some believe it's a haunted house filled with nothing but the ghost of a jilted lover. Others believe that it's a house of ill repute, where the owner takes his mistress' to have his way with them. A few insane religious nuts believe that it's the home of satan worshipers. But it is none of the above. In fact, no one really knows what it's for unless of course you're a patient there. But it's not your regular kind of hospital. You see, the Aldertree Institute specializes in all things that regular humans might find unnatural. If only they knew.

In the mid-1600's a ceasefire of sorts was established between our kind and the witches. It wasn't exactly a war, but both sides killed great numbers of the other out of spite, pride and fear, and the list of casualties was becoming unbearably high on both sides. And so a bargain was struck that ensured peace between the coven and the church. But as the years passed, the ceasefire was all but forgotten and slowly witches began to attack humans once more. Not to kill them, but for sport. They found ways around the treaty. Like curses.

The curses varied of course, depending on who the witch was and what they intended to do, but always they would turn their victim's world upside down. And when other humans found out, they would kill their own kind out of fear.

In 1893, the Aldrertree Institute for the Magically Distressed was founded by one such victim. Martin Mayhew. He built it as a hospital of sorts for those humans who have been affected by those of a magical nature. Or at least, it was until it was shut down in 1998, due to a most unfortunate accident. They helped out dozens, if not hundreds, of patients with their ailments whether it was to cure them completely or to just help them to deal with the changes to their lives, or even just to give them a safe place to stay. A.I.M.D helped them all no matter what afflicted them.

But now after an eighteen-year break, the institute has opened again. And perhaps a dozen patients, whether they be new or old, have been invited to receive treatment whether they are forced to turn into an animal or catch on fire whenever they sneeze. And they may not know it yet, but perhaps their curses aren't so bad after all.

RULES:

1) GM's word is law. If you're told to change something then please do so, or if an event takes place that affects all characters then please acknowledge it.
2) Avoid one-liners, and by one-liners I mean really short posts that don't contribute anything to the roleplay.
3) No Mary/Gary Sue's... Human's aren't perfect, so neither should your character be.
4) Be respectful of other roleplayers, there's nothing worse than arguments in chat over something silly.
5) Please do try to post at least twice per week... I know that people can be busy but otherwise the roleplay grinds to a complete halt. If your partner hasn't posted in a while, just send them a message or tag them in an OOC message.
6) Follow the roleplay brief. There's nothing worse than someone taking a roleplay completely off topic.
7) Try your best spelling and grammar wise. It's really annoying when you have to try and figure out what words your partner is trying to use. It doesn't matter if English is your first language or not.... just try your best!
8) All posts should be in English. The only exception is if your character is speaking in a different language, in which case the translation should be included in the post in bracket's.
9) Please do not post until your characters are approved. That includes your character's powers.

Backstory:
Every female member of the Lawrence direct family line is cursed. Quincy's maternal grandmother, and now Quincy. No one knows why the curse is only passed through the females, seeing as the ancestor who got them into the mess was male, but who really understands witch logic? Nobody.
So in order to answer the question of why Quincy is at Ashtree, we must first delve into her family's past...

Basically Quincy's great great great a lot of greats, paternal grandfather was a coward. He was a coward in everything he did and at first people just got used to it. But then, he royally fucked up when his cowardice resulted in a child getting killed because he was too afraid to go back to help them. Then said dead child's mother decided to get revenge and she so happened to be friends with a witch. A witch who was very willing to afflict not only Quincy's ancestor but his entire family line with a 'punishment for cowardice'. However the witch who was just a class act, decided to curse only the females in the Lawrence family so that the descendants would never feel a mother's love (or at least all of it), just like the dead child who wasn't given the chance to enjoy her mother's presence.

So basically the curse is for all females in the Lawrence bloodline to turn into cats whenever they get scared, and because this is a truly horrific thing to experience, the Lawrence women all inherit jittery nerves. And the curse gets even worse because at the elderly ages, the 'turning into a cat' thing becomes more chaotic if not properly managed, so the changes will become more frequent until they become permanent and eventually the newly turned Lawrence woman will succumb to the life of a cat. Take for example, Quincy's grandmother who turned into a cat at the supermarket, ran out into the street and got run over by a car.

Yeah. It sucks.

So when Quincy's parents found out about Ashtree, they shipped their teenage daughter to America in a heart beat with hopes that she would at least be able to control her curse if not beat it entirely.

Backstory:
Upon learning of his curse after some years when he accepted his fate he looked for ways to end the curse. He heard stories and rumors of other cursed individuals and eventually signs led to Ashtree.
Mason was involved in the civil war and was given a position of power and his actions led to the death of hundreds. One death in particular was the only son of a dying witch, her son was forced to fight in the war for his freedom with his death directly a result of Mason who was a Union soldier in power. He saw the witch on the battle field and she cursed him resulting in immortality, he cannot end his life. He has a slight healing factor but when he dies he is tormented by voices of those he killed his skin becomes as black as coal, eyes become red and he gains invulnerability and great inhuman strength. In this state he has some control but is emotional and volatile. He is not some hulking creature of anger, but is on the verge of insanity. This state lasts at most 2 hours and he remembers everything, Mason also feels great pain in this state on the outside he's invulnerable but his body heat is at 600 degrees Fahrenheit and Mason feels the heat. To achieve this state willingly he has to die but his healing factor makes that hard it was the witches will that he does not see this as a blessing so to die he has to cause himself extreme damage that overrides his healing factor ex destroy his heart or brain or massive blood loss. The wounds will heal upon transformation though but he can see these wounds when he looks in the mirror.​

Backstory

A very long time ago, Lucas' great great grandfather (Walter Hale) had relations with a witch that produced a child. However, he was a coward; he ran from the witch, far away. A while after, Walter met a woman in Brazil, who he found to be the love of his life. But the witch knew of his new relationship. She cursed him into a horrible death that could not be evaded; his heart was to be pierced by a stake. If Walter was to destroy her child's life by leaving, then he did not deserve a life of promise either. But she didn't stop there; she made the curse genetic. Every generation produced by Walter and his offspring would have one child be affected by the death curse. Afterwards, the witch was never seen again.

It was too late however. Walter had already produced a child. So that his future generations know of this curse, Walter sealed a letter which contained the details of the curse and the place that could help (Aldertree Institute) and had it passed down through each generation.

Growing up, Lucas knew nothing of his impending death curse. He knew as much as everyone else, despite his grandfather dying of the curse that plagued his name. A promising child, he was a gift academically, had potential in athletics, and was kind to others. But on his eighteenth birthday, his father sat Lucas down and allowed him to read the letter that would change his life.

Afterwards, Lucas was an emotional and mental wreck. He had no idea how to comprehend the idea of his death so early, and it drove him insane trying. His parents couldn't bear to see him suffer, so they had him delivered to the Aldertree Institute to have him helped.

And that's where this role-play starts for Lucas.

Backstory:
Piper grew up like any other girl. Until she hit puberty. As soon as her "visit from aunt flow" started, that's when it happened. She was flicking a rubber band on her wrists, and staring at a girl who made her mad. Teased her because of her braces. Then it happened the girl started to freak out, it took a while to figure out what was going on. She tested it. Flicking the rubber band harder. Until the girl was crying and her wrist was red and almost bleeding. Everyone around started to freak out, and she looked away. She let out a loud yelp as the rubber band made a deep cut. When she went home, she told Nana Bet. She accepted her and wanted to help. They first look at her family tree, and found out her fathers side of the family believed and practiced voodoo.

Her mother freaked out. Once she found out there was a place to go for help, they sent her immediately in hopes they can either cure her or help her control it. Piper doesn't see a point in it, but she would like to be with people like her. Maybe she will belong in her fresh start. Determined to get a real fresh start, Piper changed her clothes, hair, and hopefully her attitude.
