Adventures of the Starship Durandal: OOC

GENERAL CHARACTER STATISTICS

Character Name: Zaerik Nykros
Gender: Female
Species/Race: Human

Age: 35
Birthplace/World: Unknown

Occupation/School/Grade: "Retired" space pirate/Captain of the Durandal

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

General Appearance: Zaerik is a masculine name so chances are, people are shocked when they discover Zaerik is, in fact, a woman. She has fair skin, stands at five foot nine (five foot eleven with the boots), long dark blonde hair and dark green eyes. She is athletic, not an ounce of fat on her, and she loves to show it off. Her approximate weight is one hundred twenty five pounds. She has a long scar that runs across the right side of her neck from a blade that got a little "too close" and a phoenix tattoo that takes up her entire back.

Strengths: She's pretty agile and nimble, capable of doing acrobatic stunts that would put a trained gymnast to shame. She can hold her own in fights, be it hand to hand or a gun fight.
Weaknesses: She's only human so of course she needs sleep, food, oxygen, the same as the rest of us. In terms of physical strength, she's not as strong as a man her age or build, or even a man in his twenties, would be.

MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS

Current Goal/Purpose: To shoot those cannons! ... What, they're
still charging?! In the meantime, maybe explore and stuff.
Talents: She is crafty, she is sneaky, she will pull every underhanded trick in the book to get what she wants, when she wants it. Some call it "dishonorable" and "unscrupulous." She calls it "survival." Zaerik is calm and cool in the most desperate of situations, although some might find it disturbing that her twisted sense of humor cuts through even these struggles of life and death.
Inabilities: The first thing you should know ... she is one proud woman. In short, she will never ever ever ever ever ever ever (etc.) ask for help! From anyone. She'll cut her own arm off, bind the stump, and take down a horde single handed (no pun intended) before she does that. She does not know the meaning of the word "share" so don't even think of using it on her. And she never knows when to say "enough". She'll just keep pushing those limits, holding out for more, until she can't bear it and even then she probably wouldn't be satisfied.
Fears: ... Losing, failure. These are not options and shall never be brought to Zaerik as such! She will gladly press that self destruct (the ship does have a self destruct button, does it not?) if it means keeping what's hers out of enemy hands.
General Personality: Zaerik is a woman who never bats an eyelash or gets worked up over anything. She either approaches it in a calm manner or she laughs it off and she's always in the thick of things. She has a habit of always ordering the ship to "fire the cannons" and huffs and rolls her eyes when someone tells her they can't and a reason for it. She is charismatic, meaning the only one who will attempt to correct her is the ship's AI and her second in command.
Inner Personality: A woman bored with life and always ready for adventure. You only live once and she wants to go down knowing she's lived it to the fullest! She has trouble dealing with all the rules and regulations that come with the command of a vessel like Durandal but whether she's honestly making an effort to live with them or just ignoring them remains a mystery.
Secret:
... She's married!

HISTORIC BACKGROUND

General History: Zaerik refers to herself as the "only illegitimate child" of Captain Darius Nykros, a pirate who became obsessed with finding the "ultimate treasure" and disappeared in search of it. She never knew her mother and she never mentions her. Apparently she traveled with her father from the moment she could remember all the way to the day he disappeared. She carried on his pirating ways until she was finally caught--and given a most interesting proposition ...

Present Life: She's about to find out "what this bird can really do"! In short, she has just been given the job of Durandal captain! Yeah, she's just as confused as you are.
Special Historic Notes: None.

So, I'm a new member to this forum, but certainly not a new member to RP's. This one in particular caught my eye, and I was curious as to a couple things before I start doing any sort of character gen to see if this is the right sort of thing for me.

First off, what are the parameters of starship size and function in this universe? And while I'm on the subject, what sort of ship class is the Durandal itself? Carrier? Destroyer? Cruiser? Mothership? The reason I ask is because if I were to create, say, a starfighter pilot, I wouldn't want it to be out of place in the universe. I can't be a guy piloting a starfighter if there's no way it could be stored on or launched from the starship Durandal.

This brings me to another question I want to ask before I do any character creation. Is it possible for my character to not originally be of the durandal, but say, a marooned pilot picked up by the durandal?

I look forward to your response!

Alright first post is up! I know... I know... took me long enough.

DgH1: Glad to have grabbed your attention!

The tech document should help answer some of those questions and can be found here: http://space-kitten.org/iwaku/showthread.php?t=2522

The Durandal is classified as a hybrid Cruiser/Carrier, escort carrier, or maybe a pocket Carrier depending on your point of view. It's concept is the same as those ships that show up in Mecha anime carting around the main character (White Base in Gundam, Nirvana in Vandread, or the Nadesco in Martian Successor Nadesco are good examples). Essentially though it is meant to be a cross of a heavy cruiser and a carrier, giving the players a limited ammount of pilot slots while also leaving options for other roles up.

As for your second question it is more than feasable however don't expect to play for a bit then. The RP is starting with the ship's launch and I would perfer if everyone was onboard or headed to the ship for now. Maybe once we get out of the prologue we could incorperate it in if you still wish to play a downed pilot though. :)

thanks for the info.

I don't necessarily have to be a downed pilot, I was thinking something of an escort pilot.

Now that I know this, I have a question regarding the fighters.
Now, I'm wondering if my pilot can use a custom fighter, since I've done quite a few designs.

I just drew this little thingy(it's kinda crappy right now, trying to clean up the design, but wanted to get a point across here):

a custom Veritable Starfighter, probably a new model.

I can make it work within the parameters of the game, so I'm just wondering if I can do something like that.

I think Roland could just appear way later on. I imagine he's the type of character who can just pop in and out of the story a lot.

GENERAL CHARACTER STATISTICS
Character Name: Captain Lieutenant (Helmsman 1st class) Dimitri Arkadivich Portnov
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Age: 48
Birthplace/World:
Occupation: Pilot/Helmsman
More: Was once a New Soviet Counter Admiral

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
General Appearance:
Hunt_For_Red_October_1232725555_resize_460x400.jpg

Usually wears the winter uniform of a Captain-Lieutenant of the New Soviet Fleet

Strengths: a damn good flyer, even when drunk, though during the rare times of extreme stress when he tends to sober up, he is a brilliant pilot of vessels of up to cruiser in size.
Weaknesses: Always. ALWAYS at least somewhat under the influence of alcohol, cannot deal with ground combat situations and always escalates a conflict (someone threatens him, he draws a sidearm, that sort of thing) CANNOT deal diplomatically with anything or anyone.
basically, he's a savant when it comes to flying.
More: N/A

MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS
Current Goal/Purpose: earn enough money to make up for the pension he lost as a counter Admiral of the new Soviet Fleet, in order to comfortably retire.
Talents: Stubborn, quick thinking and resolute.

Inabilities: Ground combat, dealing appropriately with threats, remaining sober.

Fears: Sobriety, ground combat, being boarded.

General Personality: Warm, freindly and affable, Dimitri is a generally likeable person if one can overlook his inability to refrain from consuming alcohol.
Inner Personality: Bitter and angry about loosing his position in the New Soviet Fleet when it collapsed, finds that the only way to avoid loosing his temper is to drink.
Secret: Hates Abhumans (Humanoids that are not fully human), though this only comes to the fore when he is sober, so its usually not a problem

More: Intelligent Commanders can see past the drunkenness and see the potential for brilliance of Dimitri's piloting skills, and so, reluctantly, they tend to overlook his drunkenness.
HISTORIC BACKGROUND
General History: Born and Raised in the New Soviet planet of Volgograd, deep within the heart of New Soviet Territory, Dimitri Portnov rose from the ranks of pilots to commanding starships, although, with the economic collapse of the New Soviet empire, he was released from service without pay or pension, and so he applied for the Space Navy, and was accepted as a Pilot, as his problem with alcohol meant that he would never be able to rise above the rank of Senior Helmsman.
Present Life: Through trials and tests Dimitri has consistently proven that he is an excellent pilot/helmsman of almost all space going vessels
Special Historic Notes: will not answer to any title other than Captain-Lieutenant.

Sorry it took me a bit to get a reply to this. Easier for me at work as right now I am relying on a netbook for my internet surfing pleasures.

Seeing as the ship is currently going to be flying solo and escort pilot, in my mind, would be part of the Durandal's fighter complement. In which case by all means, there are plenty of open slots. I think there are like 20 more open not counting you should you wish to take such a role.

Custom fighters however are so far not to be. My thoughts on this were that later, should the story progress far enough, the option would become available. After all, the grew is suposed to be primarily made up of recruits using what is currently the equipment for the regular fleet. Eventually though I figure the ship will essentially become, since it is the focal point and all, a special unit all in it;s own right. When that happens there would be no issues as far as I am concerned.

As for you WMD... um... there is no New Soviet Empire? There could have been before the Solarian Compact was signed in which case it would have been annexed. Otherwise I see no issues.

alright, thanks for that info. Just wanted to confirm.

As far as I'm concerned then, I'll just be a standard escort pilot aboard the ship using that fighter that looks like an F-18 (the second one), simply for the fact that I'd like to get started a little earlier in the game. However, I may have my pilot be a guy that was transferred to the crew last minute or something of that nature.

Exactly, hence why a former New Soviet officer would be working in a new navy!

so, with the annexation bit covered, am i clear to post?

It's been a few days. I reckon you should be clear?

Yeah sorry... I spent that last couple of days in and out of a stupor. Drunken or otherwise. Your good to go WMD.

DgH1: The Durandal only has the transformable fighters onboard. The F-18 clones are being cycled out in favor for a unit that can be supplied to both ground and space forces equally and with the Durandal being a show piece of new technologies it doesn't have the old stuff.

Now that is not to say you have to turn your fighter into a Mecha... infact Ric is playing a pilot (when he gets all situated) who hates the new fighter because of the mecha portion.

Ignore my last post. FUCKING BROLAND UP IN THIS BITCH NOW.

Wait... what? O.o

Well, I was originally planning on not posting until the prologue was done and the actual real deal started, but then I went "aw fuck that lame shit, let's get this MOFO STARTED."

And presented me with a doozie... how to tactifully tell him off and praise the captain instead! xD

Speaking of which... anyone hear from Alarice recently?

Don't make a brutha leave before he's had his NUCLEAR DEATH, son. I imagine it'd be some crazy-ass improv'd pseudo-alien partially human dish of very bizarre taste and likely extreme spiciness.

GENERAL CHARACTER STATISTICS

Character Name: Lyekka
Gender: N/a, but appears female
Species/Race: Gaian
Age: Depends on how measured; basically irrelevant
Birthplace/World: Gaia
Occupation/School/Grade: Engineer, Comms officer.
More: Lyekka was the first humanoid growth created by the Gaian, and as such got the job of gathering as much of human knowledge as she could.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

General Appearance:
lafiel.jpg
Strengths: Lyekka can communicate telepathically with all of the other Gaian growths, and create more.
Weaknesses:
Lyekka's not particularly strong or fast, as she never really invested in this whole "exercise" thing.
More:
The Gaian Telepathy Network between all the various growths is the only current method of FTL communications. Furthermore, it has yet to be accessed by anything other than a Gaian, so it's standard to have at least one on each ship. More details in an upcoming post about the Gaian.

MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS

Current Goal/Purpose:
Talents: Very good with machines and scientific theory, Lyekka can even "borrow" some of the data storage and processing power of the main Gaian growth to think very, very quickly.
Inabilities:
Lyekka's a pacifist, and while she can understand the justifications behind war, she can't quite bring herself to be an active combatant (otherwise, hideous telepathic monstrosities would be replacing marines on the front lines)
Fears: Becoming some 50's B-movie alien monster, the death of the main growth back on Gaia
General Personality: Lyekka's curious and a bit naive. She's still getting used to all the nuances of human culture, so some slipups are bound to happen.
Inner Personality: Lyekka's thirst for knowledge borders on obsession, and she is far more manipulative than her outer persona would lead you to believe.

HISTORIC BACKGROUND

General History:
The Gaian is a black fungus, which (aside from a few landing strips) completely covers the surface of its home planet. First contact had the sentient fungus completely devour the away team. It was only later, when it got to wondering why there were suddenly new bundles of organic compounds for it to use, that it explored the data they had brought with them in their ship.

The second exploration ship, sent years later, received a very different welcome. There was a monument to the previous astronauts, and a young girl waiting for them. That girl was Lyekka.

Present Life:
Lyekka works in the Solarian military, mostly as a sort of thanks for finding her and providing a fleet for her home planet's defence. She's been assigned to the Durandal because she is a fairly public figure, and does have access to the Gaian Telepathy Network.
Special Historic Notes:Lyekka was the primary diplomat between the Gaian and Earth for quite some time, but that role has been taken over by others since.

Okay, an odd question... where is everyone at?

The intro post states that the launch cerimony was station side. It appears that Nick and Victor were eating station side... yet Ren seems to be at his post ship side...

So... eating on the ship? Eating on the station? Or is it both? VIPs and crew flitering onto the ship and also in the ship's galley and such... while also having the officer's and exec's eating on the station side?

Well, I know my character's apparently at some on-board restaurant, I think, ordering some NUCLEAR DEATH (use your imagination Aragon!).
