Weak. You can't have an Index RP without learning about the gloriousness of Thor and Othinus.

But yeah, that DOES bring up a question: when is this set? Post-WWIII? Post-GREMLIN? Pre-God's Right Hand?
To be fair there's a wikipedia of Index if I missed anything.

As I said before i'm still thinking of a plot line and working on another roleplay too.

At least a time would be useful otherwise I may end up talking about gadgets that haven't existed for 500 years or wont exist for another 500.

Hue, talking about events that never happened.

Name: Kageru Hikigaya

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Weight: 70 Kilograms

Height: 5'8"

Personality: Minimalistic and Realistic are the two traits that describe Kageru best. He doesn't like too much or too little of anything and prefers anything done in moderation. For that reason, he tries to live a simple life in a simple apartment in a simple yet effective schedule. He is a brutally honest person, and a very blunt one at that as he wouldn't pull punches whether you're a man, woman, child, colleague, or a senior citizen. He has quite a warped way of thinking but deep inside, he is actually quite kind if you are on his good side, that is. He may be a part of judgment but he does not consider himself as a hero but rather as a coward "Because at the end of the day, the hero sacrifices himself for the sake of other while the coward lives another day." Hence, he will only help someone when he deems such actions will not place him at a fatal disadvantage.

Likes: Coffee, Peace, Relaxation, The Night-time scenery of Academy City

Dislikes: Carbonated Beverages, Criminals, Chaos, Treachery, Unnecessary waste of time, talent or resources

General Skills:

Precognition?: Kageru has been in so many fights that he could predict most of his opponents moves by observing the minor changes in his opponents' body language that is normally invisible to the normal unobservant eye. He is also the type to keep his body in motion, a natural survival instinct he had developed during his years in Skill-Out.

Close Quarters Combat - Kageru is very adept in hand - to - hand and melee combat due to years of evading and fighting Anti-Skill operatives and esper Judgment members when he was still the leader of a small group of Skill-Outs.

Cooking - A basic skill he learned to get by everyday. Years living alone has honed his cooking skills to restaurant quality.

Advanced Pain Tolerance - While by no means he is immortal, Kageru has a pretty high pain threshold.

Extensive Knowledge of Firearms

Affiliated Group: Skill Out (former), Judgment (Current)

Esper Power and Level: Level 4 Equalizer - Kageru's power is often considered to be unorthodox and more often than not, cheating. He basically utilizes the four mathematical operations in four different ways. These are:

Addition: Makes a copy of the target. If the target is sentient, he/she will still have one will but with multiple bodies to command.

Subtraction: The opposite of addition, merges the copy back to the original target. (can only be done after performing Addition)

Multiplication: Boosts the parameters of the copy to equally match or exceed that of the original's. Kageru can use this to increase the damage dealt by his own attacks, etc.

Division: The opposite of multiplication, the target's parameters are significantly reduced from that of the original's. This can be used to soften up attacks to the point of them having little to no effect to Kageru.

Restrictions:

Kageru must touch his target to use Addition.

Furthermore, any injury dealt to a copy will also be dealt to the original once Subtraction is performed, albeit damage dealt to the original is only half the damage the copy received but since the original and the copy share one will, they will feel the same amount of pain at the same time.

If a copy dies, Subtraction is automatically performed and previous memories and experiences of the copy will be transferred to the original. The original will get to experience the sensation of death without truly dying but it does make for a very terrifying experience.

Biography:

Kageru was born and raised in a simple yet happy family. They weren't particularly rich or poor but they were contented with their way of living. After hearing about the existence of Academy City, Kageru's parents decided to send him there in the hopes that attending one of its schools would be a stepping stone for Kageru to attain a bright future. Kageru wasn't exactly happy with that decision. He was already contented with going to a normal school and going home afterwards. He certainly didn't appreciate this decision that was practically forced upon him since that meant he wouldn't be able to see his family for a very long time, specially his little little sister. Regardless, he had no say in the matter and left home as soon as the paperwork had been done.

He was only eleven years old at the time he arrived in Academy City. During his time in the City of the New Age, he was to stay at the apartment of Shiori Megami, his mother's friend who was also an Anti-Skill member. She took good care of Kageru and treated him as if he were her own son. They were on good terms with each other but even the support of Shiori was not enough to entirely dispel the homesickness of Kageru.

That soon changed as two years later, a startling news rocked all of Japan. A family of three was mercilessly killed in a home invasion by an unidentified suspect. The mother's throat was slit by a kitchen knife, the father's face was bashed beyond recognition by his very own sledgehammer while the couple's daughter was supposedly raped first before being strangled to death. Only the couple's eldest child survived the incident since he was not home at the time the atrocities took place. Upon watching that news, Kageru's entire life fell apart. All those years he had sacrificed in hopes of returning to his family one day were all proven meaningless by that single three minute headline. He no longer had any family. He was all alone in the world.

As he wandered the streets of Academy City lost in more of the mental sense than the physical one, he somehow ended up in Skill-Out territory. The attempts of the various gang members to terrify him and drive him away were all futile. After all, when you have lost everything, what's left is only a hollow shell of what you once were. Such simple, scare tactics were all ineffective for someone who's worst fears had already became a reality. The boss of Skill-Out took interest of this lost young boy and immediately tried to recruit. Lost with any direction in life, he immediately agreed just for the sake of having a purpose. And indeed, in his time in Skill-Out, he had found a purpose. See, he realized that not all people living in the Skill-Out territories were gang members or evil people. Some were only people stricken with poverty trying to get by with everyday life. He wanted to help these people, if even by a little so, using them as an inspiration, he quickly rose up the ranks of Skill-Out until he became a leader of one of its sub-divisions.

Even though he became the leader of a bunch of gang members, he operated in a different fashion among the rest. He stole from the rich and gave most of the loot to the poverty-stricken residents of his territory much like Robin Hood. However, this way of thinking and doing things didn't sit too well with his comrades who wanted all of it for themselves. However, since Kageru had been on the boss' good side, they couldn't act against him with no valid reason.

That reason soon presented itself during a particular heist at a renowned Jewelry store. The plan was supposed to be simple and everything was flowing smoothly until Kageru accidentally unlocked his powers when he was trying to open the safe. He had unknowingly duplicated the vault's door and enforced its properties as he was trying to help the locksmith open it. They quickly noticed this discrepancy and shunned him for hiding the fact that he was an esper after all despite the fact that he had just realized that himself. That minor hiccup proved to be more than enough of a distraction to stall the Skill-Out Members until Anti-Skill forces arrived. The small squad was led none other than by Megami Shiori. She had rushed to the scene after finding out that someone matching Kageru's description was involved in the accident based on an anonymous tip from a witness.

After several minutes, she finally convinced Kageru to surrender. However, as he was coming over to the other side with his arms raised in the air, the other Skill-Out members began firing shots at the Anti-Skill officers, taking most of them by surprise, including Shiori who was mortally wounded by a shot to the spine. Seeing the one family he had left dying in front of him was enough to make him snap. Grabbing Shiori's sidearm, he went back to the Jewelry store and single-handedly eliminated every Skill-Out member present in the most painful of ways possible. He was soon apprehended by the Anti-Skill members and was sent to the Juvenile Detention Facility for a few days before being released. He had learned that Shiori survived the incident during that faithful day but was in a coma. She had been one of the best officers in the force and with her incapacitated, they needed a replacement. The chief offered the boy two choices. Either he enlists in the training program for Judgment aspirants or he goes back to the detention facility. He naturally chose the former option and four years after he had joined the largest non-esper crime syndicate of Academy City, he became one of the finest Judgment operatives in the force. He also got a part-time job at Joseph's family restaurant to pay for his living expenses plus he managed to land a scholarship at a Certain High School.

Writing Sample:

The end of school signified the end of a tedious day for most students of a Certain High School but for Hkigaya Kageru, it was just beginning. As he was on his way out of the campus, he could notice the flock of students who purposely stayed behind either due to club activities or just to hang out with their friends. He never ever did that partly because he dislikes wasting time in pointless small talk and mainly since he doesn't have any friends at school. He never bothered making any friends at all although that isn't to say that he had foregone basic social interaction. In fact, he already has enough of that at work courtesy of both his fellow rambunctious Judgment members and the equally rowdy staff at Joseph's. Plus, both jobs require him to deal with people, one that is always right and one that defies what is right.

He had to go to the latter first since he has the graveyard shift at his part-time job, one that few people were willing to take other than those truly desperate for a quick buck, namely Kageru. Though as a result, whenever he had to deal with a particular crime first, he would go to Joseph's with a gloomy and certainly unwelcoming expression on his face that often times scares way the customers. What choice does he have? Judgment duty was "supposed" to be voluntary but with the deal with that devil he made, the job was practically forced unto him. And since it was supposed to be voluntary community service, the members do not get paid. The only luxury to the job is having to don a green armband that would often than not attract both ridicule and respect depending on the eyes of the beholder.

As he marched lazily on his way to the 177th Branch Office of Judgment, he bumped into one of his colleagues who seems to be out on a casual stroll. Though after seeing the gray-haired boy giving her an incredulous look, she quickly retreated back to the office as if her life depended on it.

"Sometimes, I think I'm the only one that takes this job seriously." A sigh escapes Kageru's lips as he starts towards the steps. He unceremoniously kicks the door open, attracting the attention of three other people who stared at him. The only difference was that one was staring daggers, the other was staring out of genuine curiosity while the last was frozen in place as she kept staring at him in fear. Something tells him that this was going to be yet again another tiresome day.

If you have to touch them doesn't that make it a really difficult ability to use? I mean, you have to get into close quarters with the target, and your only way of dealing damage is through non-esper ability means, and you probably won't be able to carry a weapon either. I imagine the city has quite high security on that matter. You go up against a teleporter or any ranged ability and you're pretty much screwed.

His ability affects anything he touches, be it an object or a sentient being. Imagine his multiplication ability being similar to Emiya Shirou's fortification ability. Basically, his way of fighting is similar to Kamijou Touma's and his division ability is a less potent version of the negation ability of the Imagine Breaker. Plus, it is supposed to be nerfed down otherwise, he could screw up pretty much anyone he meets if he could perform division as a long-ranged attack, making the ranking and level system meaningless. Though he could perform multiplication and Division upon objects at short to mid-ranged.

It's originally a Level 5 ability in the fan fic I'm making

Oh I see, it's not just people. So you could duplicate a stone and make it super dense and throw it at someone or something? and I thought division only effected clones too. My bad.

Out of curiousity, how fast does his Addition work? Can he pretty much graze his opponent, instantly make a clone, and then cripple the original by inflicting pain on the copy? And is this a Gemstone ability? Cause it sounds just as unexplainable and unreasonable as one.

@Razilin If your character is indeed referring to Gael...
my_trap_card.jpg

Gael's using a guqin, not a guitar. He just uses a guitar case to carry it, because of the element of surprise. :3

@Accelerator

Great character sheet and intresting backstory. Just some questions on his ability:

1. When he uses addition does the enemy become weaker or stronger since there is two copies of them?

2. Does subtraction increase or decrease the strength of an opponent?

Weak. You can't have an Index RP without learning about the gloriousness of Thor and Othinus.

I've decided that the roleplay is taking place Pre-WWIII.

Hm...so a whole lot of world-shaking events would be happening soon, huh...

Wait, quick confirmation: Can Kageru divide without touch?

1. Addition does not inflict any buffs or debuffs on the target but Kageru usually uses Division simultaneously after cloning his opponents. Furthermore, if you aren't used to operating multiple bodies with a single will like the Sisters and the Will of the Misaka Network, then you will have a difficult time controlling your body as well as the clones'

2. Subtraction mainly is the counter ability of Addition. It will only merge the clones back into a single body. Division can be utilized to decrease the strength of a target while Multiplication does the opposite.

@ERode He can multiply and divide without touch but only at short to mid range and is only limited to either his clones or an object. And yes it's a Gemstone ability

So basically, he can do something like...

Addition = make clone of human
Division = weaken clone
Subtraction = weaken clone fuses with original, weakening the original?

How does that effect ESP/Magic though? More specifically, if you cloned a magician or an Esper, does that mean that they can basically do twice the amount of what they originally can do? And wow, it seems like everyone's getting an Imagine Breaker-esque ability now. XD

He could just touch the original and perform Division w/o cloning but that works too. Basically he's a Human Buffer/Debuffer.

Yes they can do that but he would always perform division in tandem with addition if cloning an opponent. He would only clone an ally if he deems them capable of controlling multiple bodies with one will.

A melee-range debuffer...but yeah, how fast does it work anyways? Like, can he nullify an attack the instant it hits him? Or no? Same with addition and all that. Is there a noteworthy cast time to any of his abilities?

Cause holy shit, debuffers are so annoying in RPs, because it's hard as hell to get people on the same page as each other when you have to quantify a quality.

Cloning is pretty much close to instantaneous. As for Division/Multiplication, the longer he touches the target the more the target gets buffed/debuffed. The moment he touches the target he automatically uses Division/Multiplication since he isn't the type to waste time. As for nullifying attacks, it works under the same principle as Division works. The longer he touches the attack, the more its effects get nullified. It is unfair if I utilize instant negation since that pretty much is the negation of IB.

There might be some character deaths if no one is careful. Heh.

That's fair then. As long as his ability is limited by range then it's not overpowered.

Here's my two concerns: First, can he use his ability on himself? Like, can he turn himself into 4 people, buff each of the clones and himself and then smash them up with 4 hulk strength punchies?
How does it function like Imagine Breaker? Can he weaken the product of abilities, like Biribiri's Lightning, just by touch? And same with the time. If it takes him any more than the speed of an electric charge passing through a human, a lightning bolt is gonna fry him before it's been weakened.

Also I noticed way more espers than magicians. I'd have expected more magicians really given it's the main focus of the canon, and given it's way more versatile and you don't have to be batshit crazy to be powerful. I mean with the exception of Mikoto, every level 5 has serious mental issues. And that's something that's accounted for by the canon, not just an observation.
