You don't have to die to be a ghost...
[IC | OOC | Roleplay Theme]

Introduction

[spacer]Spectræ is a paranormal fantasy roleplay loosely inspired by Nickelodeon's Danny Phantom. Spectræ will include a plethora of references and allusions to the original show, such as the shared setting of Amity Park, and reenvisiond characters from the original television series. An emphasis on the fact that the roleplay is loosely inspired by Danny Phantom is important as the show will be given many comic-style twists, rewritten to include multiple half-ghosts and ultimately expanded to possibly include other supernatural and/or paranormal creatures aside from ghosts. The roleplay is meant to share the concept of its inspiration, but be taken in a significantly different direction to be enjoyed as a constructive roleplay.

The roleplay will take place in Amity Park, a fictional city of Illinois, and center around a group of half-ghost teenagers attending Casper High. These half-ghosts need only share one thing in common: a summertime exposure to Lake Eerie five years prior to the current time period. At that time, a large spill of biochemical waste into a nearby tributary of the lake contaminated its waters, and those that were exposed were potentially mutated. The spill was at the fault of a Masters Research Laboratory - one of several - stationed in the area and owned by Vlad Masters, an eccentric billionaire entrepreneur in the field of medical technology. The clean-up and cost of the event was covered entirely by Masters, outsourced to a third party, and made into a publicity stunt as an example of the responsibility all major corporations should practice. The time frame of the roleplay is the mid-2000's, and the town has seen a significant increase in livelihood due to the publicity it received several years prior.

Ghosts, the Afterlife and the world between
The afterlife is a timeless enigma that the living and dead have countless explanations for alike. In the shattered fragments of parallel universes known as "shards", no single entity has the answers to the afterlife and it is unknown if there is truly only one. What is known, however, is that not every living entity gets to go to the afterlife. Some are reborn as ethereal entities in the Ghost Zone, a semi-sensical shard of blended fantasy and mystery inhabited by ghosts and parallel to the world of the living. However, the edges of these shards are jagged, and in places there exist gaps one might escape through. A corporeal form has no ability to pass through these jagged spots on these broken shards, but a ghost-like form can. Passing from the Ghost Zone through Limbo and into the world of the living is a task, but it can be done and to those that have been influenced by the physics of the Ghost Zone, the world of the living is a playground.

Ghosts are ethereal for the most part, but can alter that status through sheer force of will. Most of their abilities in fact related to their willpower, and some are even affected by their imagination. Throughout time and even now, many ghosts have different abilities that are reflections of their lives and have identities based around a single aspect of the psyche. Individual ghosts are limited by their willpower and the strength of their souls, something the living and dead both share. A soul, much like the afterlife, is an explained force of the world, and their strengths can grow tremendous or so weak they dwindle into nothing. Most ghosts are content in the Ghost Zone, fulfilling their niches of the ever-expansive Wonderland world while others seek out other shards. Those that reach the world of the living are rarely a problem, but some are driven by rage, revenge and boredom - all of which can be equally dangerous. Some are driven by pure malice, which itself is self-explanatory. This is the nature of ghosts, and the reason real ghost hunters exist.

The Spectæ, plural form of Spectre, are half-ghosts; a term coined in the Ghost Zone by its inhabitants. At first thought a myth, but most recently proven reality, the Spectræ are the only living beings in the entire fragmented cosmos that can alter their form without the process of death, and many believe they hold the key to important questions such as: What is life? What is the afterlife? What happens at death? These questions bring forth a myriad of new ghosts, new experiments and danger, especially to Amity Park where the highest concentration of half-ghosts exist. This is being proven as recently those exposed to the biochemicals five years prior have began to show symptoms of ghost-like abilities, prompting action from Vlad Masters to keep the situation secret. These half-ghosts, the Spectræ as they are commonly called, are the biggest question mark that exists within the delicate balance of the cosmic shards, and many seek to find out the answers behind them.

Ryan De Archis is another one of the many children at Casper High whose parents are researchers for one of the many laboratories owned by Vlad Masters. Ryan often seeks out who he is, as he feels he doesn't stand out from many of the others he attends Casper High with. Although smart, there are others whose intelligence surpasses his; living in a town full of scientists' children makes it hard to stand out academically. He's no jock or artist, either. Until the dawn of his ghost powers, there was nothing that truly set Ryan apart from the others, and with the new ghost kids coming around the corner, even that is soon to be taken from him.

Personality Ryan is 'decent' at most things he does, but has excelled at anything. He plays video games, but so does damn-near everyone. Ryan has tried out music, he played sports in his youth and he even dabbled in the Casper High Robotics Club, but he never stuck to one thing long. Ryan tends to grow frustrated with things and even people. He is a bit of a social butterfly, somewhat of a flake. He's not really dislikable, just unreliable. The only thing Ryan ever truly commit to was his second life as a Specter. Most notably, Ryan lacks a "best friend" or clique of any kind.

How? Ryan did not become a Spectræ by the conventional means (exposure to the biochemical spill). Instead, Ryan was exposed to a ring found on a ghost by his father, and after cautious research, found he could turn into a ghost at will while wearing the ring. Ryan can choose when to turn into a ghost, like any other Specter, but he cannot turn into a ghost without it.

History Ryan has always struggled to find his place as he has always felt he never fit in or was ever 'good enough' in comparison to the highly-skilled and capable peers of Casper High. This yearning for more and feeling if displacement was finally answered when Ryan came into contact with a ghostly artifact found by his father, Thomas De Archis. Thomas was one of the many researchers employed by Vlad Masters, specifically to investigate the paranormal phenomena that occurred around Amity Park and Eerie Lake. The artifact, a simple ring dropped by a captured ghost, was tasked to Thomas due to his experience in the field and his status as an on-facility staff.

During his inspection of it inside his personal laboratory (part of a larger complex all owned by Masters), Ryan retrieved him at the request of his mother only for the ring to react to his presence. As it began to glow the same spectral colors as it did when the original ghost wore it, Thomas became terribly worried about what might happen if his superiors found out about this abnormality. Officially, the ring degraded after long-term detachment from a ghostly source. The truth is that Thomas took the ring to study it and Ryan on his own, all while protecting Ryan. The loss of an actual, tangible artifact by someone considered a specialist in the field of such was enough to disgrace Thomas, resulting in his demotion. While Thomas was no longer a well-respected researcher at his compound or even in the entire Masters syndicate, he managed to escape with the ring and his secret.

Later, it was found that Ryan could transform into a ghost - one of the first actual Spectræ within Amity Park - when wearing the ring. Unlike the other Spectræ, Ryan requires this artifact to transform and has been a Spectre for years longer than the upcoming batch of those exposed to the biochemical spill. During this time, Ryan assisted his father in his research and took on the name Frostfear in relation to his ability to conjure the fear of others, often petrifying them in their worst fears, insecurities and even nightmares. This ability has even proven to work on other ghosts, making their capture often easy. Thomas has since began studying these captured ghosts before sealing them into a secured vault at his personal home called the Wall of the Dead, as to keep it secret. There was no complication with this until recently... when the ghosts could turn back into the living.

    Frostfear

    - Ghost Form Traits: Enhanced Strength, Durability, Stamina, Reflexes, Agility, Equilibrium, Speed, Healing Factor and Paranormal Immunity
    - General Specter Abilities: Transformation, Invisibility, Intangibility, Flight, Paranormal Immunity, Spectral Body Control
    - Advanced Specter Abilities: Overshadowing, Ghost Ray, Light Projection, Ecto-Energy Blade, Power Augmentation
Specific Abilities include an enhanced and complex Cryokinesis and a telepathic ability to read the greatest fears and insecurities of others, then create illusions or even distort the perception of another to bring those fears to life. Although not directly related to his telepathy, Frostfear can Dreamwalk into the sleeping realm of anyone that is, in fact, sleeping.

Matthew Logan - Standing at around 5'6" Matthew is ever energetic. Though he may not seem like it at a glance, he is rather defined and muscular, though lean due to recently beginning to work out. He is normally as seen in the image provided and tends to dress in a similar manner, however he changes drastically when utilizing his ghost powers. His hair becomes white, and his eyes glow a golden shade of yellow. His phantom, or rather specter, outfit is usually the same uniform. When using his powers the ecto-energy is a shade of golden yellow tinged with red. He quite likes the color. It's kind of unique and stands out to him.
    TBA

Personality - Matthew can generally be described as a kindhearted, loyal individual in regards to those he cares about. However, this does not stop his usual sarcastic, smart mouth behavior. He also has a bit of a temper and a habit of letting it flare up and getting himself into trouble with the wrong people and sometimes for the dumbest things. For most of his life he wasn't ever really the type to join a clique or a specific social group. He was always the type to hang out with whoever he felt was chill enough, or fun to be around at a given moment. As far as hobbies went, he could be considered a bit of a gamer. So more often than not, he would speak online. If he went out it was at the request of his parents or for other reasons like that.

How? - In all honesty, Matthew had fought tooth and nail to avoid going to the camp. However, his parents wouldn't take no for an answer and he ended up going. Even when there he tried to do as little as possible. He was exposed to the biochemicals when he was pushed off one of the peers into the water as a joke. He got some well deserved payback after though. Who knew the effects of the chemicals, which at the time were unknown, would result in this. That was how he became a Spectræ.

History - Matthew was never the type to go out and make friends. For a long time he would spend his days either in his house or at school. That was his life. Of course, it went further back than a simple choice. His earliest memory goes back to when he was about three. His mother was handing him off to his father, just before going out. His father spent the night with him. The whole night. He watched him, laid him on his stomach while he watched the game. Who knew where his mother was? Of course, she came back. Hours later. After that memories get jumbled up. Either he didn't care that much for them, or they didn't have enough of his father. To him the man could do no wrong.

Fast forward a couple of years. His sixth birthday had just passed about a month or two ago. His mother and father were arguing a lot. His mother always took things a bit too far. Dad would storm out. Probably to avoid doing something he'd regret. But he'd always call or come back and spend time with Matthew. That is until one day he didn't. He'd been arrested that day or reasons Matthew didn't quite understand. But even if he had understood he wouldn't have believed it. In fact now he doesn't believe it. But he rarely speak about it.

Fast forward another two years and his mother was remarrying. Matthew didn't like the guy. To be honest, he might actually hate him. Nah... He just doesn't like him. And his mother doesn't help much. He thinks the man might actually have tried to get rid of him. But he was a bit paranoid in his youth. Still even now he isn't on the best of terms with the guy. His mother always sides with him. He's likely the reason Matthew ended up becoming the gamer he was. And then he is the reason Matthew went to the camp.

Still given the situation as it is now, Matthew has seemed to change for the better. So if that is his step-father's fault then maybe he should thank him Or maybe not. Yeah definitely not. He just wants his real dad. And to understand what's happening. Not just to him, but to the world around him. What is wrong with Amity Park?

Zayne Sanborne - a musically multitalented student, Zayne is considered one of the rising stars of Casper High and expected to go far. Unfortunately, he tends to be a bit of a pessimist about it, feeling that there isn't much of a place for him outside Casper High's walls since he sees a career in music as a rare thing. He's tried branching out but he hasn't yet figured out what he might be good at besides music. Despite his feelings about it, he doesn't let it keep him from practicing, writing music and performing it being two things that help him relax.

Personality Though he isn't flamboyantly so, Zayne is gay and that leaks out fairly often. He tends to hang out with the others in his music classes but he does have a few friends outside that circle. He also plays the keyboard in a band made up of other Casper High students though they've yet to find a singer - despite Zayne volunteering, they want him on keys. In his room are binders of song lyrics from over the years, many of them bad but the more recent ones are usually the best; he keeps the older ones as reminders of how far he's come. When he's around a guy he likes, Zayne becomes shy, especially so if they're talking to him.

How? While at a music camp, Zayne was working on writing some new music on the docks, the pier being one of the more peaceful places to work in camp. Unfortunately for him, his rival at the camp, Richard Shelby, decided to shove him into the lake in retribution for having bested him earlier that day. Even worse luck, he was in the water for a fairly long time: the way the pier was built was slightly lower than expected so when he tried to surface under it, he was trapped underwater and wound up ingesting a fair amount of tainted water before managing to get out from under the pier and onto it. Due to this, his level of contamination is higher than most other Spectrae and as a result, his ghost powers were the first to start showing though he never really thought much of his guitar picks, pencils and sheet music seeming to jump into his hands from an inch away or how sometimes, when he sang, he seemed to enrapture people - he thought it was just a trick of the light or him getting better.

History Zayne's always had a niche as the performer though it started as him acting out. A troublemaker as a child, it was clear that what he really wanted was attention for what he was doing, bad or good. It wasn't until the middle of elementary school that his talent for music was discovered in his music class. After considerable effort by his music teacher, his parents enrolled him in music enrichment classes to help develop his skills. As it turned out, he had a knack for being able to learn to play most instruments, except woodwinds for some reason. By personal preference, he keeps to the keyboard, acoustic, electric and bass guitars, and his singing.

His family is an eclectic one: his father is a teacher at Casper High for History, his mother manages a used book store in town that specializes in the esoteric, his younger sister is looking up to being a sports star in volleyball and his older brother has already moved off to college at the University of Illinois for Mechanical Engineering. As such, he doesn't have anyone he can tell everything to, causing him to hold things in more than he should.

Right now, his life feels like it's in a mess, partly because of him feeling aimless about his future but mostly because he had an incident where all he did was clap and the papers on his bed went flying, the edge torn by unseen forces. Whatever is happening to him is scaring him and adding on more to the stress he already had about his future but he refuses to tell anyone about it because the last thing he needs is to be institutionalized.

How you doing bud? So do you have any preferences on characters or anything of the sort??
I mean other than mostly Teen angst-y XD

How angsty are we suppose to go here? I'm not normally someone to make angsty characters...

Well I was mostly joking. I don't think angst is required. Just keeping with the more "fun" tone as opposed to straight up dark and stuff.

I figured as much, but my question stands since I don't want to have to make someone too emotional by what I typically do.

I'm joining the hell out of this.
Danny Phantom was my childhood man x3

Hmmm...My interest has been garnered. I'll be joining with a bio at some point soon.

Prince did you get the character idea I sent you via pm?

I just now returned home to read a majority of this. Basically, teenage angst is a broad term I used to reference the common characteristics of the archtypical youth. You may interpret that however you want.

I believe I am about done. You know? I wanted to make give reasons why he is the way he is, but I wanted it to be vague enough in case I get more ideas to add or change just a bit. Still, here he is. Everything is done with the exception of the theme song. I can't decide just yet XD

EDIT: I'll fix the spoiler when I get back online.

This will be my character, and is an example of what characters will get to do. Every ghost form inherently will have the Ghost Form Traits. General abilities are the most basic to use and get the hang of, but can be trained to be significantly better. Advanced Abilities require actual training and cannot be used immediately. Specific abilities are significantly more defined and are not exactly available to everyone, as they are "specific" to a ghost. Some, however, can be trained to acquire. Others, however, might be a natural with those abilities, thus require no training and will likely be better at them than others once they acquire any form of training.

This cs helps a lot. I can edit and make my own better. Nice stuff gm :P lol

@Demon Shinobi Matthew was accepted. You may post in the IC at any time you wanna begin.
That is awesome, though I will likely be editing the cs to match your's a bit more. Not much will really change, but I felt it could be better so you know. Anyway thanks. I'll get back to things. I'd just been busy with some college stuff.

Oh awesome, another Danny Phantom RP on here. I'll get up a bio late tonight after pathfinder ends.

I edited the IC to actually give an introduction to the RP, for anyone interested.
