[Samuel x Roman]

"You look like a strong young lad," was David's response, referencing Samuel's obvious muscle tone. "Excellent. You can pick up Roman's slack while you're here!" He guffawed, clearly joking.

Daphne rolled her eyes and proceeded to usher the three men inside. The main house on the property was large, almost a mansion, with two storeys. It was long and wide, and fashioned in a style that indicated it was a couple of hundred years old. Daphne lead them into the kitchen, where she sat them down at the small round table and proceeded to set plates of tarts, cookies and little cakes down for them to snack on while she made tea.

"So who's here?" Roman asked his grandfather as he helped himself to a blueberry tart.

"Hillary and Patrick, of course ... Uncle Hadley and Greta are coming tomorrow with their kids." Roman lit up. He would get to see his favourite cousins. "You just missed Auntie Annabella, she was here a couple of weeks ago."

"Damn."

"So, Samuel, tell us about yourself," David insisted to his grandson's boyfriend as his wife set the tea down on the table. "All we know from talking to Stellan a little is that you play soccer, and now you're living in Melbourne with Roman. What are you studying?"

As they walked in Samuel took in the gigantic home best he could while the other's just made their way in familiar surroundings. They sat down in the kitchen and David caught Roman up on who he would get to see while visiting. Samuel wasn't going to begin to pretend he could keep track of all the relatives Roman had listed to him a while back, hopefully, it'd be easier when he had to a face to pair with the abundance of names.

Instead, he grabbed one of the cookies and nibbled at it a little while he continued to look around a little. The place had to be very old, but seemed to be well taken care of, and despite being so large Samuel decided it felt very homely, although that might have just been because of the warm welcome they were getting from Roman's grandparents.

One of which who were addressing him now, so, Samuel turned his attention from the kitchen and the cookie to the man in question.

"Well, I can't say I do much more than playing soccer and live with Roman,"
Samuel said it was clearly a joke, but it was one of those things that Samuel would worry about being true sometimes, although a lot less since he met Matthew and Gabi, "But, uh, I'm studying to become a high school teacher, I want to teach history and probably Spanish too,"

"History! I love history! Especially the medieval times. I find the feudal system especially interesting ..."

David was the kind of person who claimed an entire room's attention with his conversation. He talked with Samuel about different periods of history, just generally trying to make sure that Samuel was entertained and having a good time, until they had all finished their tea. Daphne rose to her feet and collected everyone's teacups just as Roman's Auntie Hillary and Uncle Patrick entered the room.

Hillary looked quite similar to London, with the same general face shape and long brown hair. Patrick looked very similar to Stellan, though he was a little shorter and somewhat stockier. Both of the adults smiled upon seeing their nephew and Roman stood up to hug the both of them.

"Roman! You're so grown up!"

"I swear, the last time I saw you, you were only up to my knees."

"It's nice to see you both again," Roman said, stepping back. "This is my boyfriend, Samuel. Samuel, this is my Auntie Hillary and my Uncle Patrick."

Samuel happily took part in the subject of history. In all honesty he hadn't decided upon wanting to teaching history because he was some huge history buff, it was just a subject he had done well in in high school and that he had found mildly interesting at the time, but since starting university he had found himself getting a lot more into it and he thought to discuss it with people was actually quite fun.

They drank their tea and Samuel had a genuinely good time but as they finished their drinks it seemed to be time for more introductions, Samuel stood so he could properly greet them, "Hello, it's very nice to meet you,"

It was the same greeting phrase he had used before but this time he actually did hold out a hand for them to shake. He was feeling a little less awkward now that he had spent some time getting to know David and Daphne and hadn't just arrived after a long ride of being a little nervous about it all.

"So where are they sleeping?" Hillary asked David as she took a cookie from the table.

"They can stay in Stellan's old room. Patrick, get their bags from the car."

"But Dad --"

"No complaining." Everything was said in jest. The whole Hemlock family had a pleasant and joking relationship.

Roman handed Patrick the keys to his car and David and Patrick went out to get their things while Daphne lead them upstairs to their room. The room was pretty spacious, large enough to comfortably fit a king-sized bed, a dresser. an armoire and a desk. The room was decorated in earthy tones -- browns and yellows and greens. The window was open and the pleasant breeze was slipping through.

"Here you go," said Patrick, setting the bags down with his father.

"We'll let you guys unpack." And with that, the rest of the family left the room, leaving Samuel and Roman to their own devices.

As they entered the room and got left alone for moment Samuel sat down on the edge of the bed, taking some time to recover a little from meeting a bunch of new people. He looked around the room and decided he really liked the colours and decor, it was a little weird to think that this once was the room where Roman's father had loved, but it was cosy nonetheless.

"Everyone is really nice," Samuel said casually, he hadn't expected anything else but it was really nice to be welcomed into a warm home like this and it made him happy to know this was the kind of people Roman had grown up with.

And it was refreshing to know all grandparents weren't like his, Samuel hadn't really spoken to his, on either side, since coming out, his parents values had come from somewhere after all, and they hadn't made an effort to reach out to him either so it was quite obvious where they stood on the matter, his mother kept telling him they'd come around eventually but Samuel wasn't so sure.

"Also, Patrick looks so much like Stellan it's seriously creeping me out, "

Roman laughed, picking up the two cases of clothes and setting them on the bed. "Well, they're brothers. What do you expect?" he chuckled, poking Samuel on the cheek.

They were staying for a couple of weeks, so Roman decided to put all their clothes in the dresser so they didn't get crinkled and musty in their suitcases. As he did this, he looked around. This was the room he had always slept in with Brooklyn when they had come to stay with their grandparents.

Roman still hadn't talked to Brooklyn since Jake and Lizzy's wedding. He didn't want to. He didn't want anything to do with his brother. But, he knew how sad it made Ingrid, for her sons to hate each other so passionately.

"My Uncle Hadley, the one who's coming tomorrow, he looks like me the most. But Uncle Xavier, he lives in Tasmania, he looks pretty much exactly like Brooklyn ... we all only take after our mum in our Scandinavian features." After all, Ingrid was part Swedish.

Samuel felt a really weird sense of relief as Roman told him the one of his uncle who was coming wasn't the one who looked like Brooklyn. Samuel couldn't stand Brooklyn at this point, not at all, he was just a terrible person and he knew it wasn't fair but he would probably have a harder time being pleasant and polite to someone who looked exactly like him.

Brooklyn was a sore subject for Roman though so Samuel obviously didn't mention his slightly odd lines of thoughts. His boyfriend seemed to be dealing with the whole situation by just ignoring Brooklyn's existence as much as he could, which Samuel honestly didn't want to stop because a lot of the times that was how Samuel chose to deal with his dad and while it didn't really change anything in the long run, except possibly making the relationship harder to repair in the future, it was better than hurting over it.

"So does that mean meeting your Uncle Hadley will be telling of how you will look when you're older?" Samuel joked instead "Is tomorrow the day I find out if I should leave you forever because you'll look lame when you're like fourty?"

Glad that they didn't dwell on the sad subject of Brooklyn, Roman chuckled and threw a sock that seemed to have escaped from its pair in his suitcase at Samuel. "Pshhh, no. All the dudes on my dad's side age badly because we're white as fuck, but on my mum's side they're like forever young, so hopefully I take after them."

Roman finished up packing away their clothes and instead crossed to the bed, where he sat down in Samuel's lap and wrapped his arms around his boyfriend. He wasn't sad, per se, but sometimes the mention of his older brother was enough to leave him needing a hug from Samuel. Now was one of those times.

Roman nuzzled Samuel's hair with his nose and breathed in the pleasant smell. His hair was warm from the sun that was filtering in from the window. "We get to ride horses while we're here. And you can pet the cute cows."

Samuel, of course, did not object to the unprompted hug from his boyfriend, he wrapped his arms around him too and held him while he felt his boyfriend's nose pleasantly nuzzle his hair. Sometimes Samuel would just hug Roman affectionately like that for no reason than craving some cuddles with his boyfriend, sometimes it was to make himself feel better about something. Samuel knew Roman well enough to be able to tell that it probably was the latter this time.

They had just mentioned Roman's brother, and while they had let the moment pass It was hard to ignore family when you were surrounded by family, Samuel got that, and if a hug was what Roman needed right then, that was what he would be getting.

"Horseback riding seems scary, horses are tall," Samuel murmured, suddenly feeling that the mood called for a lower and calmer tone, "But also kind of cool, I am excited, I am one hundred percent going to pet the cows, though,"

Samuel shifted his head a little so Roman's face no longer was in his hair and so Samuel could get access to his face. He planted a little kiss on his and gave him a mock serious look.

"All of them, they are the best"

One of the many things Roman loved about his relationship with Samuel was that they were close enough to know exactly what the other person needed in almost every scenario. Samuel caught onto the fact that Roman needed cuddles and therefore he supplied them. Roman happily accepted the kiss and returned it with one to his boyfriend's cheek.

"Actually, I'm the best," Roman corrected jokingly. "And I'm tall too. Does that mean you're scared of me?"

Roman stood up, took Samuel's hands and lead him over to the window. They were greeted with a spectacular view of the valley his grandparents owned -- the house was on a hill, so they could see almost all of the western side of the property. Roman pointed to the fields that the cows were kept in, though the herd of animals appeared as nothing more than brown, black, white and tan splotches on the impossibly green grass.

"There're your new best friends."

Samuel whispered a joking "yes" when Roman questioned if he was scared of him, in reality He loved his boyfriend's height very much. He wouldn't disagree with the fact that Roman was the best though, he was, even better than the cows but only marginally.

Samuel happily let himself get pulled towards the window and looked out over the are with his boyfriend. Due to being on the hill they could see so much of it and it was absolutely stunning. It must be nice to live like this, on the countryside surrounded by nature. And cows. The cows had to be the best part.

"Oh my god, I'm going to die they are adorable," in actuality the cows where to far away for Samuel to really see how cute they were but they were cows so it was just a fact of life, "when do we get to pet them?"

Roman opened his mouth to answer Samuel's question, but the door opened and in came Daphne, smiling at her grandson and his boyfriend. "Dinner's ready."

"It'll get dark soon, so you can pet the cows tomorrow," said Roman to his boyfriend affectionately, kissing him on the top of the head. He then took Samuel's hand and lead him downstairs to the dining room.

The room was long and featured a very long table. At the head of this table sat David, with Daphne by his side. Also seated at the table were Hillary and Patrick and several of the farm workers who lived on the property in smaller cottages. They all seemed to remember Roman: he greeted them as he and Samuel made their way up to David's other side, where two places had been set for them.

Farm feasts were always lovely. There was a huge, juicy roast beef in the centre of the table, and it was surrounded by smaller dishes of potatoes and pumpkins, bread rolls and peas, carrots and corn. There were also several boats of gravy. Roman knew that there were a couple of farm workers who lived on the property that had their own smaller families; it was likely that their wives helped make dinner. The property was large enough for it almost to be like it's own community.

Roman served himself and then Samuel. "The sweet potato is Grandma's speciality, make sure to have some," he murmured.

Samuel let out a little "aw" but supposed the cows could wait, they were going to be staying there after all there would probably be plenty of time to pet them. And he was pretty hungry so he wasn't about to oppose to getting dinner.

They arrived to the dining room only to find that there were quite a lot of people they didn't know there. Samuel could assume they were people who worked on the farm and no more relatives of Roman as they did not look like anyone in the family. Samuel of course knew the amount of people in the room probably meant he'd naturally end up not talking to much, but in all honestly he wasn't sure if he would have done the opposite even if the people who worked there hadn't been there, four strangers were still four strangers no matter if they were friendly and Roman's family.

"Of course I will" Samuel chuckled a little, he was way less of a picky eater than his boyfriend, him not tasting was out of the ordinary, and since Roman brought it up Samuel right away tasted the sweet potato, "oh, that is really good," he turned a little to Daphne when saying it.

"Thank you, sweetie," Daphne said happily to Samuel. Roman smiled, glad that his grandmother was pleased.

Dinner consisted of Roman catching up with his family and letting them all know what was going on in his life. He told them about his tattoo course, of his work, and bragged about Allison probably too much for it to be healthy. They all loved the pictures of London's baby that they saw. David and Daphne also asked Samuel a few questions but seemed to pick up on the fact that Samuel wasn't much of a talker.

After a dessert of cheesecake and apple pie, Roman tried to help wash the dishes but Daphne scolded him. "Nonsense, you've been driving all day. Go up to bed."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Okay. Goodnight."

So, Roman took Samuel upstairs to their room and kissed him on the forehead. "Do you like them?"

Samuel enjoyed dinner quite a lot, he loved home cooked food and this meal was absolutely amazing, and so was dessert no so was the company. Samuel did in fact not talk much, but he was more of a listener and he just sat there and gladly listened to Roman excitedly telling his grandparents about every last detail of his life despite already knowing all of it.

After Roman had been denied helping with the dishes they headed back to the room they would be sharing while they where there, Samuel made sure to politely say goodnight before that headed up.

Well in the bedroom Samuel took his shoes of and sat down on the edge of the bed again, he was smiling both because of the forehead kiss he had just received and because he had had a good time during dinner.

"Yeah, they are all really nice, and this place is nice, and everything is nice" Samuel chuckled a little at how silly he sounded but he was just really enjoying being there in that moment.

Roman smiled, glad that his boyfriend was happy. He crossed to their dresser and pulled out a change of pyjamas for the both of them, handing Samuel's to him before putting on his own. The clothes were soft and comfortable, which made Roman relaxed.

Once they were dressed they climbed into the old bed. It obviously wasn't the same bed his father had slept for the years that he lived in this house for, but still, Roman felt a sort of connection with his parent by laying down in the same room that his father had grown up in.

Roman assumed the big spoon position and wrapped an arm around Samuel's strong, muscular torso. The blankets were pretty thick, which was needed in such a big and old house, but Roman left them off for now because it was still an Australian summer and therefore very hot.

"Goodnight," he murmured. "I love you. We can pet the cows tomorrow."

Samuel made a humming sound in agreement and mumbled "I love you too" then he yawned and closed his eyes, feeling perfectly peaceful in his boyfriend's arms. They might not have soon much that day as it had mostly been spent in the car, but Samuel still felt sleepy and it didn't take him long to drift off.

The next morning Samuel woke up fairly early, probably due to hearing people walking around and talking downstairs, this was a farm after all, people were bound to get up quite early, and due to Samuel waking up quite easily, especially in a bed he wasn't used to he was now awake.

Normally if he woke up early like this he'd just go back to sleep until Roman woke up. But a quick glance on his phone told him that it wasn't that early, only a couple of minutes to eight and he was excited about getting to explore the farm and meeting the other people from Roman's family that would arrive that day.

So, he turned to his boyfriend, who looked so calm and beautiful when he slept that he almost didn't want to wake him, and pressed a couple of kisses to various places on his face.

"Hey, wake up, you said we'd get to pet the cows today,"

r o m a n
Roman groaned and pushed Samuel away gently with his hand. "It's earlyyyyyyyy," he whined, despite having no idea what the time was. Roman picked up his phone and checked the time to find that it actually was early, so he rolled onto his side with his back facing Samuel.

"I'm not getting up. Fuck you." Samuel should have known by that point in time that Roman didn't like to be woken up before at least nine in the morning, unless it was for a good reason -- that good reason being either food or Brandon Urie performing in their living room. Nothing else.

"We can pet the cows later when I wake up of my own accord," Roman said matter-of-factly, pulling a pillow over his head and proceeding to ignore Samuel.

Samuel sighed a little at his boyfriend's reaction, he had honestly not expected any other reaction from his boyfriend, there was a reason he tended not to wake him up if he woke up early. But they had gone to bed at a pretty reasonable time yesterday and it wasn't like it was six in the morning, and it wasn't like Samuel wasn't tired at this hour as well, he would gladly spend some more time just waking up in bed.

"I'm not demanding you getting up now, just waking up," Samuel wrapped and arm around Roman and gave his shoulder a kiss, "and you're already awake, so,"

Then burrowed his head in under the pillow and place another kiss on Roman's neck, "just stop being lame and don't go back to sleep," he said it in a sweet voice, as if he would have said something nice like a compliment or told him how much he loved him rather than to call him lame, and then he kissed his neck again.
