Jace smiled weakly and wrapped his arms around Embry's shoulder. "Thanks, beautiful," he murmured, giving her a sweet kiss on the forehead.

Her words meant a lot to him, even though he had been so distraught before. Embry was the most important thing in his life now -- and Luna, their precious child, still growing in her belly.

"I love you. That's never going to change."

Jace reached for his phone, as it was ringing, and looked at it with a scowl. "Alexa."

Embry did not bother hiding the detest written on her face.

Alexa. She was literally the past person she wanted to have any contact with, excessively even more than with Isaac. However, she supposed it was a good thing she called instead of meeting them face to face. Otherwise, Embry wasn't sure she would be able to hold back from attacking her.

Embry swiped answer. Only because she'd rather the snake of a woman to say her words here than on her or Jace's Twitter page to add to the already the blazing fire.

"What? What do you want?"

"Oh." Alexa sounded surprised to hear Embry's voicr, bit still very jovial. "Well, for starters, congratulations on your pregnancy. I take it you'll be taking the paternity test after the baby is born? I heard it's safer that way."

Jace scowled at the ceiling and took Embry's hand, both to reassure her and himself. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose with his injured hand.

"Alexa," he said slowly, carefully, in a tone that indicated he was really trying to keep calm, "please, for the love of God, stay out of our business."

He ran a hand through his hair and leaned back.

"Embry hasn't cheated on me because she's not a lying, pathetic slut like you. She's actually a decent person and I trust her, so we're not getting a paternity test."

Embry squeezed his hand, gently stroking the back of it with her thumb. She kept herself nestled against and tried not to react to obviously affected by Alexa's words. Because then that would satisfy the antagonizing model.

Clearly, she was way too excited to have read the awful and untrue news.

"That's sweet, Jace. Not everyone is okay with raising someone else's kid after their girlfriend tried to convince them it's their own." Alexa snorted from the other end. "Well, I suppose she has convinced you. I swear, I am truly impressed Embry. I didn't think you had in you. And still, you have him wrapped around your finger."

"Don't talk about Jace or our child in aich a manner again. And I did not cheat." She replied fiercely

"Oh, sweety. At this point you should stop playing innocent with the proof all there. Otherwise the fans will really tear into you. Trust me, I know. And they're already pissed off as it is.."

Squeezing Jace's hand so tightly, she was sure she had cut off his circulation, Embry closed her eyes and sighed shakily. "Is that all, are you done yet?"

"Maybe just two more things. I'm not trying to get in your business, but when so many people tagged me, I had to call and say I told you so."
Alexa chuckled softly, finding great amusement in all of it."I may be the lying slut, but at least I'm not the lying whore who got knocked up. Unfortunately, I'm not the first to say this."

"Oh, for fuck's sake, Alexa, get off your high fucking horse," Jace snapped. He opened his eyes and scowled down at the phone, still holding onto Embry's hand tightly. He couldn't let her go, not when they needed each other the most.

"You know as well as we do that the media has ways of taking things entirely out of context. Remember that time they managed to convince people that you were a decent human being? Look how that turned out."

Jace was so close to reaching the end of his tether, to blowing up and berating her. But he needed to control himself. He didn't want to get in trouble.

"And, besides, it's not like you have kids. You've never been pregnant. If you had an ounce of maternal instinct you'd know that Embry would want to be with the father of her child. But, no, you're too self absorbed to care about another human being, much less my fucking kid."

Silence.

To Embry's surprise there was no immediate snide or cutting response as usual. It was so quiet she was almost certain that the call had been disconnected. And she was going to say so when Alexa finally said something, her tone taking a sharp turn.

"You don't know anything, Jace." Her voice was low, dangerous and bitterly calm. Yet, little by little it rose until she was screaming."No, I don't have kids. But I had been expecting once ... And I had those STUPID little maternal instincts! I had all of it until I lost it along with that baby! YOUR BABY! YOUR FIRST CHILD!"

She paused yo breath in a fresh gulp of air and try to calm down,"I was so self absorbed I kept it to myself to keep you from the pain. SO, FUCK YOU, JACE YOU FUCKING BASTARD! FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU VERY MUCH!"

For once she was the first to hang up and very abruptly too.

The silence in the room was deafening.

Jace, perfectly still, stared at the phone as if he didn't know what this strange object was doing in his hand. He was completely lost. Completely and utterly bewildered, and shocked. He slowly lowered the phone, sat up and put his head in his hands.

He ... Alexa had miscarried his child?

What the hell was he supposed to say to that?

He looked at the phone and seriously considered calling her back and talking to her about this, but he didn't, because ... he didn't want to push it. He didn't want to push himself or her, even though he hated her.

He looked at Embry. "Uh ... I have no idea what to say."

Embry herself was just as much at a loss for words as Jace was. What was she supposed to say to that? Better yet, how was she supposed to feel about that? Because at the moment she was confused. Simply confused.

Alexa had a miscarriage.

Could that have really happened or was she lying? No, it wasn't a lie. Though they could not see her face, her tone said it all.

Embry subconsciously put a hand to her own belly where Luna lied underneath the skin. She almost didn't hear Jace when he spoke. "Me either." She replied honestly.

Carefully, she put a hand to his back.
"How do you feel?"

And how was one meant to feel after receiving news such as the one Alexa dumped on him?

"I ... I don't know."

Jace pinched the bridge of his nose and stood up, because he couldn't sit still right now. He was jittery, he was uncomfortable and he didn't know what to do or how to proceed.

"I'm ... sad, I guess." He rubbed his face and poured them both a glass of Coke, simply for something to do with his hands. "I mean, I ... I had a kid I never got the chance to know." His voice caught and he sipped at his drink.

"Please don't think this changes how I feel about Luna," he begged in a quick voice, a desperate voice. "I love Luna, more than I can describe. And I love you. Just ... it's sad. I would have taken full custody of the kid from Alexa if needed. I'm not one to abandon a child that's mine."

Embry could only try and fathom what he was feeling. As much as it struck him, hit struck her too. And she did not like to see her fiancé in any type of pain.

Losing a child long ago that he hadn't known existed until now.

She couldn't fully empathize with all of it, but losing your child sounded and obviously felt horrible enough. Embry couldn't imagine losing Luna or how much it would have hurt. She wasn't born yet, but she already loved their daughter so much. It hurt to even think she could lose the baby girl.

"I'm sorry, Jace."
There wasn't anything else she could think to say. Her words were genuine, however."I don't know what to say."

Scooting out of her seat, she put her arm around his waist, held him close and kissed his cheek softly. She was only hoping to console him somehow.

"I ... there's nothing you can say."

Jace wrapped his arms around Embry's shoulders and closed his eyes as he tried to process what was going on. He had lost a child he had never met. He knew this shouldn't have affected him so much, but it did.

"I feel bad for being so horrible to Alexa now. I mean, I still hate her, but ... if this is hard for me it would have been torturous for her."

He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Do you think I should call her back?"

E M B R Y
"I think you maybe should." To leave things on that note somehow felt wrong. That was all she really knew. She didn't even if it was her placebto advise him yet alone involve herself. She did want to help him however she possibly could.

"I don't know if it's something to talk about over the phone or what you should say."
She tightened her arm around his waist.

"You should do what you think is best."

"She won't want to see me."

Jace picked up his phone and stared at it for a few moments. He didn't know what to do or what to say but he knew he needed to talk to Alexa. He couldn't just leave it at that.

"Stay with me," he requested of Embry softly, before dialling Alexa's number and putting the phone on speaker.

"Of course." Embry murmured, keeping her arms around him for his own security than her own. She pinched her lips and listened to the phone dial and proceed to ring.

At first, she wasn't sure if the model would bother to pick up when all she heard was the ringing of Jace's phone. But she was corrected when Alexa answered on the very last ring. And she didn't sound happy at all to have received a call from them.

"What? Do you have something to say? If not, I have business to attend to." Said Alexa, sounding just as bitter as before. She was no longer screaming through the phone, though.

"I, um ..."

Jace sighed heavily and leaned back against the kitchen bench. He was glad for Embry's presence. She steadied him, and he knew he wouldn't be able to do this without her. He needed her for moral support.

"I wanted to say I'm sorry," he said quietly, fiddling with a stray thread on Embry's sweater for want of something to do with his hands. "I ... didn't know, obviously, but that's not an excuse for speaking to you the way I did today."

Because he wasn't going to apologise for calling her a slut any other day. She had hurt him too badly.

"Do ... do you want to talk about this?" He didn't know why he asked -- she wouldn't want to talk to him. "How many people knew?"

E M B R Y
"No, I don't want to talk about it. Not with you or your pregnant girlfriend." Alexa huffed, frustrated. She obviously knew of Embry's presence and sounded somewhat insulted by it.

Embry pressed her forehead into his shoulder, but remained silent. She didn't want to upset the other woman and she really didn't have anything to say to her anyway. She only stayed for his sake, not because she was curious or anything of the sort.

"The only people who know of it is me, my doctor, a friend and now, unfortunately, you two. I would like to keep it that way." She said almost threateningly, but signed incredibly tired right after. "That's all, please and thank you."

"You could have told me," Jace choked.

His voice was catching and his hand was shaking, and only Embry's arms around him were keeping him together. He kept his eyes fixed intently on the top of the fridge as he tried to find the right words to say.

"I would have helped you through it, Alexa." He pinched the bridge of his nose and tried to stop himself from crying. "You didn't need to ... to spare my feelings or whatever you were trying to do."

Jace exhaled shakily. He sounded like he was going to cry.

"I ... didn't you think you could trust me?"

Embry bit her bottom lip and held on tighter to Jace, searching for a better way to console her fiancé. She could only rub his sides, and step on her toes to kiss his cheek.

There was silence on on the other end and then ...

"I thought I said I didn't want to talk about it." Alexa kept her low, still very irritated, though it was hardly noticeable, her voice did soften toward the end.

"It wasn't a matter of trust, okay?"
She breathed slowly, "At the time I was devasted. And I was sure there was something wrong with me, I didn't want anyone to know at all. I didn't want them to know of such a horrible flaw."

"And I still don't. I want to keep it buried in the the past. Where it belongs." Alexa finished, her tone indicating she no longer wanted talk about. That she was done with it."Is that all you wanted to know or is there more?"

Jace tried to understand how Alexa felt but he couldn't exactly. He wasn't a woman, there was no chance of him ever miscarrying a baby. But he knew how shattered and destroyed he would be if Embry lost Luna.

"I'm sorry," he whispered, even though he knew it wasn't his fault. And he didn't even know what he was sorry for, but he was wracked with guilt, crippled by the sadness that had settled over him like a warm blanket. He didn't know how to console her or what to do.

"I'm sorry if I ever did anything wrong," Jace choked. He kept his arms firmly around Embry. "If I ever did anything wrong to make you feel like you couldn't trust me. Whatever I did to make you cheat on me."

That wasn't fair but Jace wasn't thinking right. He ran a hand over his face and exhaled heavily.

"I'm ... I'm sorry."

"Unfortunately, your apologies don't mean much, if anything at all." Alexa concluded coldly. Sadly, it was easy to tell she meant every word of what she had said.

And she hadn't bothered to day anything else before hanging up on them both.

Embry clenched her teeth, wishing she had opened her mouth before the supermodel. She did not like seeing Jace in the state he was. Hurt, vulnerable, sad and confused. He was apologizing for things he shouldn't have.

And Alexa only shut him down. It angered Embry, she knew that her miscarriage must of been awful. Embry couldn't even bare the the mere thought of losing Luna. But it gave her no right. No right to continue treating him like shit.

"Jace, look at me."
Embry pulled away to look him in the face. Carefully, she slipped the phone out if his hand and set it on the bench. "Please don't apologize for that, for her cheating or anything else. No matter how you look at it, it isn't your fault."She cupped his face in her hands.
