My roleplay partners and I have found it increasingly difficult to tag people when there are lots of fancy symbols and stuff that aren't on the keyboard. I want to propose the idea that, for future usernames, we take it down to just being numbers, letters, and spaces, but no fancy symbols and the like? This way, we can just type the username without any worries or frustration.

Yeah, I agree that tagging people with fancy characters in their usernames is borderline-impossible. It basically requires you to hunt down some other post of theirs so that you can copy/paste their username, which is... annoying, and really detracts from the convenience of the tagging system as it currently exists.

I for one would not be opposed to creating such a limitation on usernames.

I agree as well. It does come impossible. Specially if your not in a role play with them. I also think that you should only be able to change your name once a month and not every day numerous amount of times. It's nearly impossible on that aspect as well. I would support this.

Yess, thirded. Plus, when I'm on my work computer, half of the symbols don't even show up (it's old okay QQ). I would be over the moon if it was made so only simple characters could be used.

Pros: easier tagging and reading of names.

Cons: limitations on user creative expression for the sake of the convenience of other people.

I personally am fine with the weird symbols in names, but I do take the selection of such names as their way of saying they don't want to be tagged so I don't bother unless it's extremely important. Their loss if they wanna make it hard for me to tag them.

This is definitely something worth discussing and considering though, so don't take this post as me trying to shut down the conversation. :)

I'm not sure how possible this is, but perhaps having tag-nicknames could be a thing? That way they could have their weird letters and choose a (simple letters only) secondary name to tag them to make life easier on others. Or stick with the weird-lettered one if they don't want to be tagged. I'm not sure enough people would use it to make the hassle of coding it worth, though.

Really? I've never heard anyone say that the reason why they put special characters in their name is because they don't want to be tagged... although I've also never asked. >.>

I was being snarky. 8D

On another forum I'm on, you can click the mention button under that user's name.

Of course, that would mean you have to search for that user's post ^^;

I don't mind the nifty looking names, although it's not in my taste. I say that their name can't start with some bizarre symbol, because at least when you have a good two standard letters you can just swipe down on the endless list of role-players rather to having to look up their name or hunt down a post they've made. I also think it would be pretty nifty to be able to tag someone by their nickname if they're intent on using a fancy username. But I'm not sure the forum itself allows that. o:

Maybe it would be possible to make it so that the pull-down list that comes up when you start to type in a username can also pull from the middle of the name instead of only giving you results that start with what you typed in? (So like, I could start to type in "Magnum" and still see "Gwazi Magnum" (or whatever he calls himself these days) on the pull-down list.) This could make it easier to tag people whose usernames start with fancy characters -- which would be especially useful since I see people placing special characters at the beginning and ends of their usernames more often than I ever see anyone using them in the middle of their name.

Not sure how easy that would be to implement, but, it's a thought.

Yeah, that would definitely help. I've tried to tag a girl who has hearts in the front of her name but the rest of the name is normal letters, so it's just a bit frustrating on my end. RIP

Mhm, kind of like how it is when you're searching something on google.
