A new version will be going live sometime this month, with all five styles and a boatload more colours. It's a massive undertaking, though, so—be patient!
Colour Guide 2.0 is live!​

I've had this beauty sitting around in my inbox for a couple months now, greedily kept to only myself and some close associates— @Herzinth. (Yes, I'll update the PM, and yes, I won't take it away from you.) However, in light of @Jorick's recent suggestion of coloured text use in his dialogue guide, I figured it was about time to share it with the world of Iwaku at large.

Here at Iwaku, we have four site styles: Medium, Medium-Light, Dark, and Light Thunder Grey, Grey Mist, Bright Light, and Black Night. When using the preset colour for your text, this is not a problem, as it automatically adapts to each style's preference. For those who want to get fancy however, there is a tendency to only think of the style currently in use by the poster themselves.

Needless to say, but said either way, this is rather selfish. My poor eyes cannot cope with your horrid colour choices.

Background colours:
(Background colours were obtained through screencapture and photoshop analysis. It is possible some slight variation may exist between users. Current colours were officially given by @Diana!)

It should be noted that in my earlier tests, both conversation and post previews differed in background colour from actual post results. However, as this is rarely of use, I forwent the need to add them in.

People should read this. Read it hard. I'm not a big fan of coloured dialogue, but proper colour choices make it a lot more bearable.

I've come to defend thee, coloured text!

I use coloured text in posts but this guide nails it on the head: Use colours that are nice and neutral. I use a mix of light and medium colours myself, knowing that highlighting works. Otherwise, the reason I use colours is...

Because it lets me be lazy as hell about speech ownership, especially in scenes with several characters. Rather than having to explicitly say who said what or keep some regular pace to my dialogue, I can just assign a colour and bam, problem solved. "Mikan is green", therefore all green text is owned by Mikan for the duration of the scene. Done. Confusion avoided. Otherwise, I have to play the pronoun ownership game with speech text. Which I can easily do, but if I can be lazy about something after writing hours of text, I'll take it. Plus, I just so happen to like coloured dialogue. Colours can reflect the nature of the character speaking, their tone, whether they're friendly or hostile, and so on. ex: Red text is normally used for untrustworthy, enigmatic, or outright hostile characters. Green text is normally used for allies. Et cetera.

tl;dr: Properly used, it's a tool. Improperly used, it's an eyesore. READ THIS GUIDE! IT IS BROVO APPROVED!

Dark is best imo. It allows you to see every color well enough and allows people to freely express their color preferences without any issues (at least not from me). Only problem is if someone used black text... Other than that, colored dialogue is convenient, because it allows you to quickly pinpoint character interaction when replying.

I actually updated this about four hours ago, with the new hexcodes coming directly from the mod in charge!

There are more than four styles now, but Diana assured me only the four background colours will be used. For example, Black Night's background is being used for Teal Owl, Sienna Hamster, and Violet Queen.

Okay, I edited in a quick hexcode list.

I hadn't really though much about it because these colours are only directly accessible in the Rich Text Editor—if you're typing in the hexcodes yourself, there are so many options available that it would be impossible for me to list them all.

So I guess I figured it would be kinda needlessly restrictive in comparison?

Now that I have that mini-list, I might just look into doing a larger-scale study of colours and style-matching outside the standard 5x8 table. After all, who knows! Maybe someday a list of 39 colours that are suited for all four styles will be adopted.

Okay, I've replaced the second section with a far more useful and expansive list of colours. They are the 216 web-safe colours, which can be expressed by any combination of 0s, 3s, 6s, 9s, Cs, and Fs. This will probably be the biggest—and hopefully last—significant update to the colour guide.

This is excellent, even though the way I format my character posts I have a different colored background for my posts than the normal ones iwaku offers. However, I was curious...
For anyone who wants to answer:
What is better to look at?
Light on dark, or dark on light

The age old question lol. I have a harder time personally with light font on dark background. For one or two posts I'm fine, but after a while the font starts to bleed together and everything looks fuzzy. I love the mist grey option best, cause it's a little of both worlds... not too glaring, but also not all black and foreboding.
