THE CENTAURS OF THE WEST

The centaurs of this herd have dwelled in this forest for as a long as anyone can remember. The centaurs history, as they know it, pits the first Ancestor as Migos the Tall, who first united the hoofed ones of the forest. Before this, for centuries, the Cervotaurs (deer and elk based 'taurs) and Centaurs all battled each other for rule of the forests' resources. They all had the same beliefs and he convinced them that working together would benefit them more than battling each other. He was the first King, taking Ethera the Noble as his Queen. She herself is rumored to be related to over half of all 'Taurs. After them, came many others. A hundred years after the alliance between them, as Arctic the Regal came into power, Hades the Bloodlustful began a rebellion against the Cervotaurs, as he believed they had become too powerful. The battling continued as peace was finally broken. This is believed to be where the Great Darkness began. Two decades of fighting continued, and much blood was spilled. It took the marriage of Reia, the princess of the Centaurs, and Umbrio II to unite the two once more. Still, to this day, an air of mistrust is seen between many Cervotaurs and Centaurs, especially those who are still alive and witnessed the First and Second Wars. They each blame the other for the being the cause of the Great Darkness. Since the ascendance of Titan III to king, he has been compassionate to many other 'Taurs, much more than his father, Titan II. This has allowed others to also join their herd, no matter their ancestry.

Centaurs - Horse/Human Hybrids
Cervotaurs - Elk or Deer/ Human Hybrids
Centauricorns - Rare one-horned Centaurs. Usually born witb powerful magical abilities, and are usually Medicine Keepers and Lyrics
Lupetaurs - Wolf/Human hybrids, usually cast from the herd and dwell in the Darkness

The 'Taurs have a subconscious connection to each other, being able to read each other's minds if the bond between them is strong. All 'Taurs have the capacity for magic, but some are better than others.

1 Human Year=3 'Taur years

TERRITORY
Because they are a fairly nomadic herd, they span many different types of terrain. The largest terrain, which is where the herd spends the most time, is an expansive pine forest. The tress are extremely tall, allowing ample hiding places from mountain lions and wolves. Bushes carry edible and poisonous berries, and it is up to the Gatherers to be able to distinguish the two. It also is a great area to stock up on medicinal herbs. Unfortunately, this is where the Great Darkness has populated, covering up to half of the forest. The plains, another common terrain, is vastly different from the forest, although not very far away. It looks as if it is an endless sea of grass, with little foliage, except grass, of course. The kind of grass that grows is edible, however, providing enough food for every member. This terrain, however, does not provide any protection from wolves or snakes. Mountain lions do not tred this far. At times, the herd may retreat to the mountains, especially if wolf packs become more of a threat at that time. This is the mountain lion's territory, though, and is only used as a last resort. It is very cold, and provides no food or medicine. This coldness could cause the Sickness, a pneumonia-like disease that can be deadly. Each of these surrounds a vast lake, which provides more than enough water for the entire herd. During the hot months, they will venture more so towards the lake.

RELIGION + BELIEFS
The 'Taurs have an animalistic belief system, believing that every living thing contains a spirit. Earth Herself is the mother of all spirits, and is worshiped wholeheartedly by most. The Ancestors are of utmost importance, and are preyed to often. They tend to show their signs or give advice through visions. There are two kinds of 'Taurs that have a spiritual connection to the Earth: the Medicine Keepers, and the Lyrics. The medicine keepers have spiritual connects to the Earth and her flora. They use healing magic to care for the sick or injured. Lyrics use the power of sound magic to connect with the Earth. They are masters of instruments, which include wind instruments, drums, and string instruments. It is considered lucky when Centauricorns are born.

THE GREAT DARKNESS
The Great Darkness is a plague placed upon the forest for unknown reasons. This plague causes many trees to die almost instantly, and renders most edible plants poisonous. In the Darkness, the only creatures that manage to survive are many snakes and bugs, as well as the ever feared Lupetaurs, which are half human, half wolf hybrids. If a 'Taur of the herd is caught there, he is most surely a goner. Little else is known about the Great Darkness, and the herd would prefer if it stayed that way. The Darkness has not spread for hundreds of years, but who knows when it will terrorize the forest once more...

POSITIONS I THOUGHT OF
King: Commander of the herd. Makes most if not all major decisions, and stands at the front when they become mobile. Not limited to just male.

Queen: Second commander of the herd. The mate of the King. Can make decisions in the King's absence. Not limited to just female.

Princes/Princesses: Children of the King and Queen. Next in Line for succession.

Head protector: Military commander. Trains young ones. Leads other protectors. Leads war if necessary.

Protectors: Guards of the herd. Protect Gatherers from predators. Form the Military. Are usually bigger than most other 'Taurs.

Medicine Keeper: Uses healing magic and herbs to heal the sick and injured. Has a connection to the Earth through plants. Interprets dreams.

Gatherers: Gather food for the herd and can help gather herbs for the Medicine Keeper. Are usually smaller than most 'Taurs.

Lyrics: Plays music for entertainment during down times. Can serve as Gatherers at other times. Has a connection to the Earth through sound.

The Young: Young 'Taurs under three 'Taur years of age. After one 'Taur year, they can begin learning their trade.

The Lowers: Distrustful, punished, or newer members of the herd. Can ascend status overtime, and learn a trade. Are usually made to carry supplies as they travel.

WORLD NAME: Barathanaatyam

DEFINING QUALITIES:

Is it Earth? Unlike Earth? Future or Past? Alternate History? PLEASE DESCRIBE: This world is an Earth-like planet, with intelligent living beings inhabiting it. Its technology varies depending on the area and race of the people using said technology. It could be considered Alternate history but is more Lord Of The Rings-like.

Size: The planet is 3x larger than Earth.
Gravity: The gravity is a bit heavier in certain areas with large amounts of magic/supernatural elements within it.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere above ground level is very humid, with the amount of water on the planet. This causes heavy rainfall to be very common and blizzards to be harsh. Floods and mudslides are common in valley societies. The air has a bit more CO2 and Nitrogen than Earth, but the species have adapted, needing little oxygen than humans.
Moon(s): There are three moons that orbit Barathanaatyam. The largest is Caaran, whose surface is fiery and filled with volcanos. Elves who study the moons theorize that there is no intelligent life there, but cannot confirm, as it is not yet safe to apparate there. The second largest is called Sysmet. It was named after the most beloved king of the Elves, Anreas Sysmet the Fifth. Its surface looks like that of Earth's moon, but instead of being covered in rock dust, it is covered in fine salt powder. With the Elves being able to Apparate there safely, this is where they mainly get salt for the preservation of food. After a small war with the Demon Hordes, Sysmet fell from being a territory of the Elven Kingdom to being a neutral territory, free for all. However, the Elves take as much as they wish, causing tensions between them and the Horde. The smallest moon could hardly be considered a moon, but barely meets size requirements. It has no atmosphere and is irregularly shaped. It is always present in the morning times. No one has any real interest in it, considering it is basically uninhabitable and poses no benefit. The moons all have limited atmosphere and gravity, and no one lives on them.
Sun(s): There are two suns that Barathanaatyam orbits. They are collectively referred to as the Duomagna and orbit each other as well. The largest one is much redder and older than its smaller counterpart, who is about the same size and age as Earth's sun.
Galaxy: Little is known about the rest of the galaxy, as the Elves' magic does not extend far enough. It is known, however, that there are several other planets in a solar system around Barathanaatyam.

GEOGRAPHY:
Major Geographical Features: Barathanaatyam is home to a myriad of biomes. The East is dominated by a vast forest filled with deciduous trees and evergreens. Little is known what lurks in the deepest parts of the forest, as it has yet to be explored. Parts of Mount Vestabon are contained in this region. In the West, an extremely hot desert covers most of it, with spots of life few and far in between. Little Demon settlements are made on the outskirts of the region, with the Emperor in the middle. The Northern part of Barathanaatyam contains most of Mount Vestabon. It receives the harshest snowfall and temperatures during the winter. The Elven cities are perched on various mountain peaks. Finally, the south is more so tropical that the other areas. It is filled with palm trees and lots of undiscovered wildlife. The coast is the warmest area of Barathanaatyam.
Natural Resources: Ore is mined primarily in the lower caves at the base of Mount Vestabon, and is controlled by the Elves. Oil is sometimes struck by lucky Demons in the desert. Gold and silver are not rare and can be found in the caves in the Eastern part of the mountain. This production is handled by the 'Taurs, as these are essential to Alchemic processes. Amethyst, however, is quite rare and is used as currency. This can be made through Alchemy but has been monopolized by the Elves. It can be found in various places buried deep in the ground.
Seasons: The normal seasons (spring, summer, winter, fall) are present, except winter and spring last longer and take up most of a Barathanaatyan sun cycle. During spring, rainfall is almost constant and lasts for approximately five Earth months. Summer is usually the happiest time. Although it still rains often, the days are usually quite nice and sunny for those not living in the deserts. The deserts become unbearable and uninhabitable. This season lasts for a month. Demons tend to go underground for most of this period. The winter is the harshest for the Elven Kingdom, as blizzards plague them constantly. Snowfall affects the East as well but is mostly just high ground coverage. This is the nicest season for the Horde, but makes nights extremely cold. Fall is harvest season for the 'Taurs, so it is extremely important to them. Fall is quite regular for everyone else and not seen as very influential. The only area that is hardly affected by season is the South, who's climate stays the same through sun cycles.
Additional Information: The most fertile lands are located at the Eastern base of Mount Vestabon. Most 'Taurs farm there.

WILDLIFE:
Animals: In the North, not many wild animals go near the cities. Wild hoofed animals tend to dwell the mountains, such as goats and wild Magabos, which basically look like horse-sized sheep. Falcons are the only "threat" to the Elves, but are more of an annoyance than anything. The South has many fish species and tropical-looking birds. Amphibians are also common here. The West has very little wildlife. Mostly small lizards and scavenger birds. The most prominent animal is the Yelpper, which is a mammal-like rodent. In the East, forest dwelling animals are very common, with bison roaming the plains and forests in huge herds. Wolves can also form here but mostly come from the darker parts of the forest.
Animal Characteristics (intelligence, eating habits, lifestyle, relationship to primary races): Albino whales are the most intelligent animal in Barathanaatyam, according to the Merpeople. They communicate almost exactly like the rest of society does. The 'Taurs hunt the Bison frequently, and as their population grows, the population may go extinct, according to Elven Alchemists. 'Taurs, however, worship the bison and see them as gifts from their Gods and do not believe them. Goats and Magabos are domesticated by Elven farmers for milk and meat. Fish and some birds are the Merpeople's main source of food.
Domesticated Animals: Goats and Magabos have been domesticated by the Elves for food.
